Prepare to go five rounds with the rabbit.

UPDATE: The Badge Center is now available for download from the Nintendo eShop in North America. Five plays are US$1.00 and C$1.29.

After over a year of taunting players in Japan, the Collectable Badge Center is opening its first Western branch.

Nintendo of Europe has uploaded a trailer that announced the free to start application will launch this Friday (13 November) in the eShop. The application allows for badges that decorate the 3DS home screen to be added, with new badges added by way of a UFO-catcher style application. Players will get five free practice attempts per day to earn plays at the badge dispenser, with additional plays of the badge machine costing £0.90 / €1.00 for five.

To date, more than 3000 badges have been released in Japan, covering many of Nintendo's franchises.

Neat stuff.

Still hoping this comes out in North America.

I wonder what took them so long.

I had also wondered this - but assume Nintendo just weren't sure the money earned through micro-transactions would cover localization. Or maybe the localization teams available are just small enough and/or busy enough that they don't have time for this project?

For what it's worth, despite being excited about the game if it comes out I'm not planning to pay much (if anything).

Dear god. At first was like: this sounds horrible, Nintendo is charging us microtransactions for what's surely some gatcha-pon-esque random chance to get useless vanity trinkets...

Then I watched the trailer and I was all like THIS IS AMAZING! I WANT IT! GIVE IT TO ME NOW!

I think this is stupid, and yet I'll probably download it and use the free tries, but never buy anything.

Just like I've done with the Pokémon free junk.

It's now live in North America. Like, right now.

Looks a lot cooler than I expected.

Time to decorate some menus!

I prefer the nice clean standard 3DS home screen. This and the themes dont interest me very much.

Eh, that Sega Genesis theme is pretty awesome to be honest,

Because even almost 27 years later genesis does what nintendon't (and that's make a 3DS theme worth paying for.)

Ok, having played around with the Badge Arcade application I'm a big fan. It solves one of my big complaints with the home menu (being able to stick a badge on folders is awesome), makes themes much more appealing because you can customize them, and gamifies the whole badge collection thing.

I'm not a fan of the micro-transactions, and I suck at the actual crane games... but can overlook those issues as long as it's handing out free tries occasionally.  Also, it's not like NoA had given away any free themes anyway - they were charging $2.50 CAD a pop previously, but at least now you can "buy" a theme from the Badge Arcade and get a bunch of icons at the same time to use for customization.

Yeah, I like it.  About time this finally showed up here.
