Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Famicom with 30-cent Virtual Console games!

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Famicom in Japan, known as the NES elsewhere, Nintendo is starting a Wii U Virtual Console Trial Campaign.

The campaign will allow Wii U users the ability to purchase select NES or SNES Virtual Console titles for the low price of 30 cents (or 30 pence) each with one new title be offered each month. Sticking with the theme of 30, each game will only be offered at the discounted price for 30 days. After the 30 days, the games will return to their normal price.

This campaign begins today with the release of Balloon Fight and will continue through July. The release schedule is as follows:

January – Balloon Fight (NES)

February – F-Zero (SNES)

March – Punch Out! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES)

April – Kirby’s Adventure (NES)

May – Super Metroid (SNES)

June – Yoshi (NES)

July – Donkey Kong (NES)

Japan will be seeing a similar release lineup with a few key differences, most notably Mother 2 (Earthbound) being released in March. The Japanese lineup can be seen below.

January – Balloon Fight (NES)

February – Fire Emblem: Monshō no Nazo (Mystery of the Emblem) (SNES)

March – Mother 2 (Earthbound) (SNES)

April – Kirby’s Adventure (NES)

May – Super Metroid (SNES)

June – Yoshi (NES)

July- Donkey Kong (NES)

I would buy all of those at $0.30 each, I could even do it with the Wii Points I still have left. But I don't own a Wii U yet. :(

March – Mother 2 (Earthbound) (SNES)
For thirty cents?

tee hee.  I can imagine the outcry once this word gets widespread. :D

azekeJanuary 23, 2013

Iwata is clearly abusing his powers shoving his game Balloon Fight everywhere.

Only in Japan.
Only for 30 days.

AdrockJanuary 23, 2013

I'll pick up Super Metroid for 30 cents.

Allow me to put this appropriately eloquently: "**** YOU, Nintendo."  :@

This had better mean that Nintendo's finally solved their self-imposed problem with Earthbound being on the VC, and that we'll finally get it eventually.

That's the only one worth buying for me :/  I'd get mother if I could as well.  Wish there were some better titles on that list.

A true fan would have played it on SNES. I'm callin' you out, son. Where's your Nintendo cred now?

All will be forgiven if the entire trilogy is remade and released worldwide. I hope that's what Shigesato Itoi's Twitter cock teasing was referring to. A girl can dream...

And I did play it on SNES, giant box & player's guide and all. I owned & beat it back before I sold off my SNES to get an N64.

AdrockJanuary 23, 2013

A true fan never would have sold one Nintendo console for another. Boom.

By the way, I was joking. I don't care about your Nintendo cred.

NbzJanuary 23, 2013

As cheap as Balloon fight is right now, I'm not paying for a game I will most likely not play and already own on 3DS anyway. Super Metroid however, I am super excited for. I've wanted to play it on my GamePad from day 1 and finally will be able to in May :D

Fatty The HuttJanuary 23, 2013

I already own Super Metroid on Wii VC.
So...I could upgrade it for $1.50
or, buy it anew for $0.30.

Hmmm....decisions...decisions...

vuduJanuary 23, 2013

Unless I'm mistaken, Mother 2 was never released on the Wii VC in Japan.

This would make the Wii U release the first re-release since Mother 1 + 2 for GBA came out back in 2003.  If the only reason that game never made it to the US was because of low projected sales / NOA's desire to kill the GBA then this means there's at least still hope that Earthbound might come out someday in the future.

Great googoomoogoo! Those are some exciting choices for trial titles!

Hey Wait... Aren't you Dead?

That list isn't that great considering they could have stuck to the NES but whatever.  Super Metroid at 30 cents I might pick up because up to the wall jump is probably worth that much.

SorenJanuary 23, 2013

Everyone should buy Super Metroid at 30cents.

StogiJanuary 23, 2013

Unless they already have it. Then they should pay a buck to import hahaha.

I would pay a lot more than 30 cents for Super Metroid with off-TV play if I could have it right now.

It'd be nice if the NES Donkey Kong were the version they gave away on the 3DS with the missing level re-added.

the asylumJanuary 23, 2013

I already own Super Metroid. On a CART.

Actually I own most of these games already. At least I can finally say that Nintendo is releasing some F-Zero this year.

ShyGuyJanuary 23, 2013

Sorry, I logged on the vudu account and forgot to log off.

I haven't bought any VC games on principle, but 30 cents is a reasonable price to get me to re-buy.

SeroJanuary 26, 2013

It is NOT only for 30 days. Who in Earth said that?

Thing is, the PERIOD IN WHICH THE GAME IS AVAILABLE FOR SPECIAL PRICE (30 CENTS) IS 30 DAYS . After that, it returns to the original price. But if you buy it during the campaing, THE GAME IS YOURS.

You download it, install it, its yours, its on your console. It has no time limit.

Guys, please, pay a bit more attention on things...

Who are you talking to? That's exactly what the news article says.
