Organize your 3DS menu and patch your games!

Nintendo will add the ability to patch games and put your applications into folders in a 3DS firmware update on April 25.

The first game to use the patching ability will be Mario Kart 7, which will correct the glitches such as the infamous Maka Wuhu shortcut. Other games receiving updates are Kingdom Hearts 3D (in Japan), Love Plus (in Japan), and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

The update will also add the ability for the Nintendo 3DS to use folders in the home menu. These folders will be able to hold up to 60 icons each, making managing and browsing your 3DS download software much more convenient.

YEAH!!!! No more Maka Wuhu Glitch!!!

JRokujuushiApril 21, 2012

Are they going to be restricting online play to players with the same version of the system software?  That wouldn't really be fair if someone passed on the update and used the glitch against someone who patched up and couldn't use the glitch even if they wanted to.

RasApril 21, 2012

AWESOME on both fronts.  I love Maka when played right, and I've begged for folders since day one.  All my NES games in one, GBA in another, etc.  YES!

FOLDERS!!!! AMEN!!!

xcwarriorApril 21, 2012

About time this happened.

I don't care too much about the folders option, but if they gave me the ability to put the same game into multiple folders.

For example, I could have a Donkey Kong Folder that has the GBA Mario vs. Donkey Kong, DSiWare Mario vs, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong '94, NES Donkey Kong Jr., DSiWare Game and Watch Donkey Kong Jr, and DSiWare Metronome.

Then, I could have each of these games in other folders - the two Mario vs. Donkey Kong games in a Mario Folder, the GBA game in a GBA Folder, the DSiWare titles in a DSiWare Folder, the GB game in a GB folder, the NES game in an NES Folder, the Game and Watch in a Game and Watch folder...  I'd spend so much time organizing my menu...

Folders is a good addition!

Unclebob wins for whining about the most insignificant Nintendo thing in 2012. Contest is over folks.

There was a contest? I object and demand an appeal.

KITT 10KApril 21, 2012

I didn't know there was a glitch in Mario Kart 7. And the folder feature doesn't really speak to me, but is cool to have anyway.

Oh, c'mon, you have to wait at *least* until after E3, I'm sure there'll be even more insignificant things to bitch about then.

Oh and, yay for folders! Of course, my menu isn't even close to half filled up, but it's nice to have the option now.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the patch for Kid Icarus is, well, patching?

I hope it allows circle pad pro dual analog controls.

Oh wow. I didn't even really think about that. It's fully possible that THAT could be a part of the patch! Woohoo for those that want dual analog control for KI - though I'm perfectly happy with my left-handedness and using the stylus for aiming! ;)

I wasn't whining... I'm just saying - I don't care about the folders.  If I had the option to sort them as I described, then I'd have a lot of fun with it (Yeah, I'm a dork like that) - but just regular folders?  Meh.

You don't want folders. You want and sort and find function.

That could be neat as well, letting me tag my games with my own tags. :D

But I'm still thinking Folders.  If this were Windows, I could create the folders and put as many different shortcuts in as many different folders to the same title as I want.  This is what I'm saying would be awesome. :D

Also, it'd be awesome if, instead of displaying the first character of the folder's name on the front of the folder, it'd be great if it would let you put icons there.  I'm thinking the system could have x-amount of pre-loaded icons to choose from, then you could also choose from any icons inside the folder or any icons in your activity log.

But plain, ordinary folders?  Meh.

ejamerApril 21, 2012

I rather like the folders idea, but hope it's a reasonably robust implementation.

What UncleBob suggested (multiple links to the same game allowed from different folders) would be awesome. I'm also curious about what options we'll have for specifying names/icons. From the video, it looked like only the first letter of the specified name gets displayed over a generic folder icon on the home menu.  Functional, but pretty ugly.

All in all, a nice system update though.

This is a very impressive move by Nintendo.

@JRokujuushi - The 3DS patch is mandatory. You can't get online with your 3DS without applying it.  The MarioKart7 patch will be the same, to avoid the unpatched player vs. patched player scenario you described.

sonicfan1373April 21, 2012

@ejamer

I agree they could have made the folder icon look nicer and perhaps even added colour labels to them. I guess we have to wait until the next system menu update for that to happen.  :D

Let's wait until the update actually arrives. There might be something more than was shown in the video. (Then again, that might be all they offer... so don't get your hopes up.)

I for one am glad to hear about the inclusion of folders on the 3DS. Being in Japan, I have downloaded TONS of videos and also just have a ridiculous amount of VC games, too. I was wanting Nintendo to do something like this since the Wii.

Hopefully Nintendo of America will see the addition of folders as something that has to be justified by actually releasing things to put in them.

I like how the example was to first move all those videos.

Now this made me chuckle.  ;D

I want to see someone's 3DS who has OCD after this update. ha

Wasn't the first thing they moved into a folder during the show Nintendo Zone? It's like they know some people, specifically the people who would watch Nintendo Direct, just don't give a crap about some of their extraneous apps.

I've already got my folders planned out:

- NES
- GB/GBC
- Advance
- Original
- Crap

ChariblazeApril 25, 2012

If it wasn't there already, QR code functionality is in. Also, the cartridge game and System Settings can't be foldered. And they've changed the thing that happens when it reads your SD card; instead of an empty square, they show a blank slate. Nifty.

QR was there, but now it's available directly in the eShop as well so you don't have to use the camera app.

Ryadin91April 25, 2012

The update came to me late last night, before 12 am of course.

zooky19April 25, 2012

Why would they even add a qr code scanner to the eshop? Is it for scanning a eshop qr code? Or is it the same thing as the one on the cammera app?

eShop QR codes. Unfortunately, NOA has released very few QR codes (unlike in Japan where every download title has one).
