New Super Mario Bros. Mii Is the Mario Bros. Wii U Game

The E3 2011 demo will be a full-fledged game that will be officially revealed at E3 2012.

E3 2011’s Mario Experience, otherwise known as New Super Mario Bros. Mii, looks to be the upcoming Mario Wii U title that Shigeru Miyamoto teased in a recent interview with the Spanish newspaper, El Mundo.

When asked to comment on Miyamoto’s remarks, a spokesperson for Nintendo of America replied with, “In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.”

New Super Mario Bros. Mii was shown as a tech demo for the Wii U during E3 2011. When shown, the game was very similar to its counterparts, New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii; however, it included the use of Miis, as well as support for the Wii U’s tablet controller.

"Based on" may mean it could be a little different from what we saw, but who knows. I had always expected it would be something similar to the demo, since it seemed like more than just a concept demo.

Ian SaneApril 16, 2012

The concept demo seemed too generic and safe to convince me on a Wii U purchase.  And if Miis infecting the game is the big hook, well I might skip it even if I buy a Wii U for other reasons.

It always seemed unlikely for Nintendo to develop this demo as much as they did for it to not be a real title, especially since "it's Mario but with Miis" seems like EXACTLY what Nintendo would want to do.

broodwarsApril 16, 2012

So where are all the people who shrieked all over the Wii U threads that the "New Super Mario Bros. Mii" game shown at E3 was "just a tech demo, not actual software"?  :P: : Well, if it's just going to be bland New Super Mario Bros. with Miis this time, I see no reason to pick it up even if I do get a Wii U.  When you combine "bland" (the New Super Mario Bros. level design and art style) with even more "bland" (the Miis), I don't see how you could possibly get "superb".

Hate to say it, but I have to agree. My excitement for the game just dwindled to "Maybe I'll get it a year or two after it is released, used if I can find it cheap". Maybe Nintendo will still shock us with another Mario game, or it has changed so much that it is unrecognizable from the Wii U demo.

I have a good feeling that this game will have something else about it that is interesting to us. As it stands, though, it's just a side-scrolling Mario game, which is oddly not as exciting as it once was.

MagicCow64April 16, 2012

Yeah, this is a buzz-kill. I think with the inclusion of the Miis and the dispiritingly bland art design, the "New" series falls out of the realm of the "real" Mario continuum and becomes something of a Mario Party-esque spin-off.

The trouble is they don't seem to be making "real" 2-D Mario games anymore . . .

The Mario games don't have a canon anyways, so the platformers really are on the same plane as the Mario Kart games (which have Miis).

Yeah, I would be extremely hyped for a "real" 2-D Mario game (if you are referencing the sprite based visuals and design). It is like the NSMB series has lost the diversity and unique style of the 2D Mario games from SNES and NES. Besides SMB2J, every Mario game has had a fresh visual look to it, with Yoshi's Island being one of the most unique.

AdrockApril 16, 2012

I'm kind of tired of New Super Mario Bros. It was cool as a throwback and update to the original Super Mario Bros. but after 2 games, it's run its course. I want to see Nintendo do something else with Mario in 2D. Miis aren't going to change that. I'd rather see Miis in a Mii Platforming game. I feel like Nintendo is severely limiting the potential for Miis by just sticking them in Mario games. Let Mario be Mario and let the Miis be Miis. The best part about the Miis is that player made them. I'm surprised Nintendo didn't come up with a similar concept to Little Big Planet first based around the Miis. It's kind of the next step and too obvious to have been overlooked. With the tablet controller and the stylus, a primarily user-generated game starring Miis on Wii U could be one of the coolest games ever.

TrueNerdApril 16, 2012

I'm assuming this will be a launch game. I mean, that makes sense. And isn't there also a new 2D Mario coming out for the 3DS this year? That seems like a lot of 2D Mario...

Hopefully, this is where this game is going. Level editor/creator or GTFO NSMB Mii.

nickmitchApril 16, 2012

Yeah, Miis are probably the WORST hook they could come up with for another NSMB game. Galaxy 2 had Yoshi, which is a great hook. NSMBWii had four player and was a console game, good hooks. NSMBMii has. . .Miis. . .

You know what would be an okay hook? Comes with the console for free.

AdrockApril 16, 2012

Would Nintendo really give a brand new Mario game away for free? I doubt it. They would likely mark up the console even more than they're probably already planning on doing. I don't think it's a bad idea to include a Mario game and even though I'd prefer Nintendo move in a different direction than New Super Mario Bros., I'd gladly take the game. I just wouldn't call it "free" by any means.

The E3 game was just a tech demo.  Like I've been saying a million f*cking times, the demo shown at E3 was going to eventually become a real game but what we saw wasn't the real game.  How f*cking difficult is this for some of you to understand?  Just because the game is based off the E3 demo doesn't mean it's going to look exactly like the E3 demo.

Dude, you need like an ice cream cone and a balloon. Relax. If it's a New Super Mario Bros. game, it's probably going to look exactly like that demo. That's the style of the series. It's not set in stone but chances are that it'll look like a New Super Mario Bros. game if it's part of the same "New" series.

If it is a pack in game, that would be fine. My fear is that if they do include it, the system will be more then the possible $300 price point and it will be used to justify a higher price (kind of like how the Wii was priced $50 more, give or take, from the Japanese price point which didn't include Wii Sports).

Yes it'll have the same artstyle but graphically it'll look different.  Just like with NSMB DS and Wii, they both have the same artstyle but graphically NSMBW is a huge improvment over DS because it's on way more powerful hardware and as a result looks better then the DS game.  The demo shown at last years E3 was just NSMBW upscaled because Wii U hardware was still unfinished and so it was easier and cheaper to use the Wii engine to make a playable tech demo.

With the final game though, it'll be made on real Wii U hardware which will make it look graphically much better then the E3 2011 demo.  What about this is so hard for people to understand?

Last year's demo wasn't just NSMBW upscaled. It was already running at native HD resolution with higher-res models and completely new levels. Much like when NSMBW and SM3DL were shown at E3, I expect some of the levels we saw will make it into the final version. Yes, they could improve the graphics some, but I'm not expecting significant changes. Though I do hope we see some more interesting use of the Wii U functionality, it's hard to say what they'll do with this game since the demo's only official purpose was to show the game cloned onto the remote screen. From a practical standpoint, the NSMB series proved to Nintendo that they don't have to make drastic changes to and it's still guaranteed to fly off the shelves. Yeah, I wish they'd do more stylistically, but I don't mind too much as long as the levels are well-crafted. NSMBW had this, but NSMB did not.

That's a good point. I strongly disliked NSMB DS, but I had a good time with the Wii iteration. The level design made up for the art design. Something about it still didn't quite hit home all the way, though, and it feels like that was the part that will allow for the Mii integration. The co-op on the Wii game was fun and all, but it still worked as a single player game, and I fear that the Mii-ed up sequel will push the co-op angle too hard and make it moot as anything but a multi-player game (a la Four Swords). No one I know plays games to any real extent anymore, so if a game is multi-player oriented I'm SOL. (This is also why I don't give a shit about 90% of Xbox software).

Evan_BApril 17, 2012

A resounding "meh" from me. However, there's plenty that could make this game a good buy, or even better, a good pack-in. The ability to design and share levels and online co-op would make this game absolutely fantastic, and "World" DLC from Nintendo would add a lot. We could get a BUTTLOAD of content out of this game, but it all depends on how Nintendo swings it.

The Miis don't interest me, especially since good old 2 player co op is where it's at.

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)April 17, 2012

Just a level pack with HD graphics and Mii's = the first mainline Mario game I won't buy since, ever.

Online co-op and/or custom levels = instabuy.

If it doesn't have custom levels or the option to download a new level every week, I mean what's the point?
People should check out the Reggie! editor and start making their own levels or just play the awesome level packs people have made already using it.

A sequel to NSMBW does exist, it's just not made by Nintendo, and it's free.

The Wii U controller would actually be perfect for creating custom levels. It could be something akin to the Mario vs DK level editors on DS.

It makes perfect sense from a business standpoint to have a sequel to New Super Mario Bros be the game.  Have it be a system launch game, get kids excited for it, and have them clamor to their parents that they want the new Wii so they can play the next Mario game.

Then even if it doesn't selll like hotcakes, they can start including it with the Wii U after a certain point the same way they started including the original with the Wii.

I'm also fine with it, as I have yet to pick up a copy of Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Why even make it a Mario game? Using Miis allows for unlimited freedom. The player makes the character; he/she should be allowed to build the world in any way he/she chooses.

I'd love a Mario level editor but like I said earlier in this thread, let Mario be Mario and let the Miis be Miis. They should be separate titles.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorApril 17, 2012

Because that's not Nintendo's design philosophy.

AdrockApril 17, 2012

Allow me to rephrase since rhetorical quesions aren't working: it shouldn't be a Mario game.

By the way, what's Nintendo's design philosophy? I suppose what I don't understand is why would Nintendo allow so much freedom in allowing the player to create his/her own avatar but the same freedom in player created levels is suddenly off limits.

Spak-SpangApril 17, 2012

Well, what we don't know is if the graphics have changed...themes have changed...power ups have changed...the 2011 was a tech demo, that is being turned into a game...it used assets from the original Super Mario Wii.  So, the actually Wii U game could be quite different.

We basically know nothing about the game.  It could have a level editor....it could have online 4 player gameplay.  It could have a VS mode...it could have some crazy fun party games included.

Basically, people are complaining about a 2D Mario game, which should be pretty darn fun, because almost every 2D Mario game has been an absolute blast to play...including the original New Super Mario and New Super Mario Wii.

Fatty The HuttApril 17, 2012

I agree with both of thse comments. I really think online co-op will happen. I hope the level editor does too. Downloadable new levels will probably happen as well.
I predict this game will be part of Nintendo's online strategy - it will be designed in a way to get people to go online, which was a big problem for Nintendo with the Wii.

Ian SaneApril 17, 2012

The big hook of NSMB was really that Nintendo had not made a 2D Mario game in a long time.  Well now NSMB is an established series.  2D Mario, and 2D platformers in general, are now very common place.  The newness of playing retro gameplay is gone.  A new 2D Mario should no longer focus on nostalgia but should be as progressive and innovative for the genre as the classic NES/SNES Mario games were and like the 3D Mario games are.

You get like one shot at the safe retro revival game, then you have to make something with substance.

We complain that Nintendo systems don't launch with Mario games anymore, and now we're up in arms about a side-scrolling Mario game likely at the system's launch and we're disappointed.

What's even worse is the fact that all the people complaining haven't even seen what the real game is going to look like yet.  They act like the game is going to be nothing more then a complete rehash of NSMB Wii with the only new feature added is Mii support because that's what the tech demo from a year ago looked like.  Never mind the fact that NSMB Wii was a huge improvement over the DS game with bigger levels, more complex and challenging gameplay as well as adding 4-player multiplayer.

You'd think people would expect the Wii U game to have a similar jump like Wii had over DS, but no, to them it's going to be exactly like the Wii version just because a short tech demo which was quickly made using the NSMB Wii engine for the sole purpose of showing how the Wii U controller can stream games on it.  Apparently waiting less then 2 months before seeing what the real game is going to look like is way too much for some people now.

As Aaron said, the demo last year was made for HD.

I don't think the game will blow our minds, but I would be shocked if there isn't another revelation or two at E3 about it that hypes us up.

Considering the 2-D Mario games have been shells of the SNES/NES games, it is kind of hard to get hyped for yet another Mario game. Nintendo has yet to wow me at all with the NSMB games, NSMB Wii was a big step up from the DS one, but still was lacking. Was it fun? Yes. Was it memorable in the slightest? No, not really beyond maybe the final boss battle.

Now if the game has become a new 3-D Platformer or shfted to a more spirte based/hand drawn look, I would get excited.

I've heard the "those aren't the final graphics" talk before and when has it EVER been true?  If Nintendo going to completely rehaul the graphics for this when they already had it working last year?  Who does that?  When has Nintendo ever done that with something that was actually playable?

And does Nintendo have a reputation for being incredibly lazy and using the same plain vanilla Mario models in numerous games (not to mention the Mii models)?  Uh, yes they do.  So I should assume that THIS time they won't?

Nintendo seems to operate in extremes while what their fans want is somewhere in the middle.  Nintendo's response to Wind Waker backlash was to practically remake Ocarina of Time.  So it either has to be a glorified cartoon or  cookie-cutter OoT pastiche?  It can't be, I don't know, something in between?  There clearly is going to be some situation that is either not enough Mario or too much Mario and the sweet spot is in between.  If Nintendo can only operate in black and white extremes it's because they're idiots, not because their fans can't be pleased.

Wasn't Skyward Sword basically in between those two Zelda extremes you mentioned, Ian?

Also, if Nintendo wants to do 2D Mario right they should give it to EAD Tokyo. As much as I'd love to see them get a shot to do something different for a change, they clearly understand the Mario style, and I'd argue the 2D segments in the Galaxy games show a lot more creativity than anything in a NSMB game.

Yeah Skyward Sword was very much in between.  Of course Nintendo then decided "hey let's just recycle the same three areas a million times and include an annoying design element from Phantom Hourglass that nobody liked!"  Still that's a flaw in the specific execution.  Sometimes they have the right general idea and screw up the details.  Mario Sunshine is a great example of that as it they tried to differentiate it from Mario 64 which was a good idea.  The problem was that the waterpack idea they came up with to differentiate it wasn't any good.  But they didn't overreact with Super Mario Galaxy and stuck to the idea of differentiating it from the earlier titles and came up with the planets concept which WAS a good idea.

And as you mentioned with Mario Galaxy I also thought some of the 2D areas in that game and its sequel were incredibly creative.  I remember one from Galaxy 2 where Mario jumps into zero-gravity pockets of water and swins around and then jumps out of them back into "normal" gameplay.  At the time I thought to myself "why isn't there anything this cool in NSMB Wii?"  It isn't like the 2D platformer genre is done and no one can come up with cool new ideas for it.  They exist and Nintendo has come up with some of them.  The problem is just that with NSMB they are intentionally unambitious.  It is supposed to be safe and predictable.

And I think I need to point out the elephant in the room here: the problem is the casual market.  NSMB was the biggest hit on the DS.  Nintendo wanted NSMB Wii to have universal appeal and that means it had to be conservative.  They promoted the hell out of the whole family playing together with the four player support.  It was also the first Super Guide game.  The target audience prohibited Nintendo from going for broke.  It has to be familiar and safe to get lapsed gamers to buy it.  It's the same reason why Mario Kart games now punish skill because casuals find that intimidating.  If NSMB was full of Mario Galaxy style 2D levels it wouldn't have as much universal appeal.

The Miis mean this game is also going for universal appeal.  Ditto the mulitplayer.  I want some real creativity on this but it is not possible if Nintendo is going for the casuals.  Even if you think casuals will accept more creativity Nintendo doesn't think that.

leahsdadApril 17, 2012

Maybe I'm being naive, but...

I've seen a lot of people, nay, NINTENDO FANS on this thread say "Oh, this may be the first Mario platformer that I pass on."

Now, in retrospect:  Has there ever been a Mario platformer, in the history of Mario platformers, that have been bad enough or even mediocre enough to pass on?  I'm ignoring the Lost Levels, but hey, I'm American and I was never given the chance to pass on that, in Nintendo's finite but sizeable wisdom.

The decison-makers at NCL are not stupid, and as much as making a mediocre sequel to cash in might sound plausible or even likely (hello Activision) I have a little faith that this will be a good game with inspired level design, at the very least.  At the very, very worst, this will be NSMB DS, and hey, we knock that game, but it was enjoyable.  I bought it.

Ian SaneApril 17, 2012

A game doesn't have to be outright bad to pass on, just unexceptional.  Every game out there is competing for my time and money so they have to stand out.  It's like how Mega Man has remained decent but is not so exceptional that I feel the need to buy every game in the series.

I have already skipped a Mario since I don't own a 3DS and I don't really care.  I don't feel like I'm missing out.  The concept of unessential Mario already exists for me.

This game is going to be good.  I have no doubt there.

BeautifulShyApril 17, 2012

I am going to have to agree with Fatty the Hutt up above. A lot of you are complaining prematurely. At this point in time we know that it is 2D Mario and it has Miis and the Wii U is coming out some time at the end of the year. There is plenty of time between now and then or before the release of the game. I also have been noticing something similar with you guys as of late. You guys have no patience as far as it comes to info or games. I don't know about the rest of you but I got my patience during the N64 era.

I feel like that's all everyone is really bitching about. Mii's, NSBWii, blah blah not imaginative blah blah Galaxy ROCKS!!!!! blah blah Nintendo sucks. As I read past the bullish I found that what you guys really didn't like and don't want to see is the reuse of the art style, and you know what? You're right. I don't like the art style either. It's not terrible, but it's not exciting either. This is one of those "ZELDA GC WOOT! WAIT WTF IS WINDWAKER" moments that is actually backed by the fans. Nintendo was right to force feed us Windwaker's oh so smooth delightfulness, but now it's our turn to request (read: demand) it.

Nintendo has to do more than a level pack with HD graphics.

Reggie! editor plus homebrew channel or dophin emulator = NSMBW in 1080p with 8 new worlds and new levels uploaded daily for FREE.

I'm hoping for a Brawl style "new level a day/week" type feature. I don't care if the level editor is gimped with only the most basic of options, anything would suffice!
If they did this it would stop people trading it in and make it yet another evergreen selling title for them that could last potentially forever (so, 5 years in gaming terms!)

I am excite for E3 reveal!

Seriously, is it not obvious that the new Wii U game is Super Mario Bros 4?
lets see...  Nintendo registers a domain name for SuperMario4.com,  they they announce the new 3DS Mario game (not called Super Mario Bros 4), then they say Wii U is getting a new 2D Mario game... it's not rocket science guys

Except Super Mario 4 came out in 1991, and will be playable on WiiU when you buy it for $8 on Virtual Console.

For the last time, Super Mario World is Super Mario Bros. 4. http://themushroomkingdom.net/images/mailbag/mailbag20040518_smw-j-cart.jpg

Yes... in JAPAN.  That means nothing, just look at all the Final Fantasy games numberings in the USA compared to in Japan.  the new one will be Super Mario Bros 4 in the USA and Super Mario Bros 5 in Japan.  Do you think they just now got around to regestering the domain name in honor of a 20 year old game?

Nobody has diverged numberings on a major franchise since Final Fantasy, and even those were corrected. And yes, they just got around to grabbing the domain because it was previously controlled by a cybersquatter. Nintendo didn't care as much about name protection earlier.

So Nintendo can never have a Super Mario Bros 4 in the USA?  because you know if they ever came out with a new one named Super Mario Bros 5 almost everyone in the USA would be saying hey, where is 4?

I'll be back in about 6 weeks (after E3) to say I told you so :)

They wouldn't do either; they created the "New" series, which avoids the issue. BTW, I don't know of any case where Nintendo registered a domain name for a game well ahead of time. They're more concerned with trademark registration since they can use that to assert rights over a domain they don't own, and even then, they usually wait until the last minute so as to not leak info.

It should also be pointed out that later printings of SMW in Japan did not have that subtitle, and that the game Japan calls SMB2 is different than the game every other region calls SMB2. If Nintendo releases a actual SMB4, I can see it being called that in Japan too.
