A port of the insanely popular 2007 first-person shooter is coming to the Wii, in November courtesy of Treyarch. UPDATED with official press release.

Activision is going to bring Call of Duty 4 to the Wii, according to Kotaku.

Titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the port is being handled by Treyarch, who worked on last year's Call of Duty: World at War.

It is scheduled to hit stores on November 10, the same day as Modern Warfare 2 and the recently announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized for DS.

Yay, a two year old game!

KDR_11kAugust 05, 2009

So they're giving us MW1 while everybody else gets MW2? What kind of lazy bunch are these people? They should at least make the Wii version MW1+2 then so MW3 can be released simultaneously on all systems.

Say what you want, but if I keep having the glitching problems with Conduit online, then this is a must-buy for me. I never played it anyway so I'll probably pick it up anyway since it is a critically acclaimed game.

PlugabugzAugust 05, 2009

Does Infinity Ward have some sort of itch against developing on Wii themselves?

Athena AsamiyaAugust 05, 2009

I think the death knoll was Treyarch.

There's a reason why they're calling the new one only "Modern Warfare 2"

Judging by the response here, this is not what Wii gamers want.  I personally am not interested because I don't like military shooters.

GKAugust 05, 2009

The main issue for me with World at War was that I was paying full price for a watered down port & I'm not talking graphically. The knowledge that I paid $50 for a game that's missing Nazi zombies, tanks, & capture the flag just ate at me until I traded it toward The Conduit.

But then again, it may end up being the best bet for gamers that found The Conduit underwhelming so I may have to try Modern Warfare. Wonder if there's a snowball's chance in Hell that it'll have Wii Speak support.

I did want this game...when it first came out for the other two systems. I like military shooters, don't get me wrong. It's just how the Wii owners get treated like 3rd class gamers is annoying us.

Unlike Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo doesn't have any sort of multiplayer network that spans across games.  I don't really see how you can blame the developer for skimping on multiplayer featuers on the Wii as a result.  They would have to go above and beyond the call of duty (lol) and not only provide the game modes and features, but also do a lot of the work that was done for them on MS and Sony's consoles by providing the matchmaking and friend infrastructure.

Not saying it can't be done, but have previous military shooters on Wii sold well enough to warrant this extra work?

Personally, I would rather games like this not come to Wii at all.  Develop a new Call of Duty game that takes advantage of what makes the Wii different from other systems.  Maybe it's not even a first person shooter, maybe it's a rails shooter or maybe something else entirely.  I have a 360, I don't need another version of COD4.  Even if I didn't have a 360, I wouldn't play this.  (I didn't play it very long on 360 anyways).

Having a system with a unique control scheme is only going to be (creatively) successful if the games on that system are tailored to that control scheme.  Ports of 360 games don't do that.

Athena AsamiyaAugust 05, 2009

I personally love rail shooters, I was always the girl (with the PINK gun, of course) plugging quarters into the Time Crisis machine at the arcade.

I find that if I ever recommend one to a FPS fan, however, they react very poorly to the idea. I'm not saying they're right, I like both styles myself, but it's hard to sell the idea of a rail shooter to an FPS fan.

Rails shooters have been pretty successful on the Wii, much to my surprise.  Dead Space isn't out yet (is it?) but I'm pretty sure RE:UC sold well.

RE:Darkside and Dead Space Extraction is coming out in the fall. RE:UC is a million seller.

How did HOTD:Overkill sell on Wii?  It was a critical success, but I never checked it out.  I really should do that, but I'd need to convince someone to play through it with me first.

Smash_BrotherAugust 05, 2009

For HOTD: Overkill, the graphics were worse than the DC HOTD games and everything was darker and hard to see, not to mention that you could buy an assault rifle with infinite bullets after level 1 and the game became insanely easy after that.

Athena AsamiyaAugust 05, 2009

I'm not saying they didn't sell a lot, I know they did. But it's hard to convince a guy who wants a completely DIFFERENT experience that he should play a rails shooter instead, that's all I'm sayin'

DeguelloJeff Shirley, Staff AlumnusAugust 05, 2009

They just better not act all surprised when this two year old game bombs.

Blame it on Activision, and then Treyarch.
I don't like Treyarch at all. I've extensively played Modern Warfare (XBox 360), and World at War (PS3), and there is such world of a difference in both single-player and multiplayer. I hate World at War.

I hope they don't. In in the near, I would really like to see an Infinity Ward game built from the ground up for the Wii.

In the game? Yes. But on the packaging apparently it was changed back to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and I assume it's because they (Activision) don't want to miss on sales if people buy the game only because it has call of Duty on it. Infinity Ward has had some bickering with Activision before, and I'm hoping for them to go independent or find a publisher that deserves their talent.

BwrJim!August 05, 2009

First time I witnessed this game, it was on my friends LCD projector and it was the first time in my life a game as made me nauseous..

Perhaps, maybe perhaps they will use their current engine and tweak it more and more to get a better visual appeal.  I have Call of Duty WaW and its neat, but nobody plays it here so its just collecting dust and about to hit eBay.  In fact I don't even like these war games less for the on line presence

GKAugust 05, 2009

I don't have a 360 so a decent Wii FPS game is something I'd like to buy. Even if they had to further scale back on the graphics to add gameplay elements like the vehicles & all of the maps, I'd be okay with that.

Of course I would also be all for a Wii exclusive COD game too. I'd overlook the missing features seeing how everything else would be new content. They can call it Call of Duty Modern Warfare: The Early Years or something.

Yeah, that was another reason I was willing to part with it. I had one friend code from a guy on youtube that outclassed me by like 20 or 30 levels. His other friends were up there too so when I was invited into a friend match I was pretty much dying left & right.

This is the weirdest news I've heard in quite a while.

Pros:
- CoD4 is one of the best first-person shooters ever made.
- If all the online features are brought over, including in-game parties and voice chat, this should be the premiere online multiplayer Wii game.
- It's another chance to refine Wii FPS controls and compare them to what is available on other platforms. (Note: Classic Controller should still be supported.)
- There could be new features, such as World at War's co-op/on-rails mode, or some new connectivity with the DS game(s).

Cons:
- It looks really bad to release this at the same time the sequel (or arguably, the sequel's sequel) is coming out on other platforms.
- Considering that CoD4 has sold a billion copies, most people who wanted to play this gave have already done it on another platform. The potential market for this port seems trivial.
- The game is being ported by a different developer. You can't really predict how well the game will turn out based on the Wii versions of CoD3 or World at War, because those were Treyarch's own games. As far as I know, this is the first time Treyarch has ported a CoD game that was originally developed by Infinity Ward, although Treyarch has been using Infinity Ward's engines for a while.
- As noted earlier in this thread, Treyarch has a history of developing inferior Wii versions (missing features).

---------------

I'd be a lot more interested if Treyarch was developing an original Call of Duty game for Wii, or if Infinity Ward was developing a Wii version of one of their own games (preferably Modern Warfare 2).

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusAugust 05, 2009

Unfortunately the original Call of Duty will be a PSN/XBLA release so I doubt they will try to fit it on to WiiWare. As for Treyarch, I think they are decent and they ported the Call of Duty 4 engine on to Wii for World at War so in a way it's a logical fit. Although it would of been nice if  Modern Warfare 1 and 2 came out on Wii this year.

According to wiki they have made 4 games and all of them have not been on a Nintendo platform. They are really talented yes but seem to have no desire to want to make games within the constraints of a platform. It gets farmed off elsewhere.

I'm unusually psyched for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles in light of this news.

And Overkill's lighting looks fine on my TV, and people tell me my settings are TOO DARK for them.  I like Overkill, a healthy amount of content for a standing-up light-gun shooter experience, and no, I don't use the on-screen cross hairs.  If a rail shooter offers calibration (all 3 Sega shooters), I get zero enjoyment treating it like a glorified Wii Play target practice.  I gotta hold up that plastic peripheral, use line-of-sight, and fight the shakes and soreness in my shoulders.

COD4 has sort of been one of the flagship titles for the HD consoles for the last 2 or so years, and I think that alone has given it a bad reputation amongst the hardcore Wii fans, who have been rallying against the HD consoles.

That's not a good reason to dislike a title, but I think you'll see that kind of sentiment around the internet pretty frequently.

You must be happy Wii got Quantum of Solace.  Activision was happy to not care about it.

When Nintendo announced Metroid Prime Trilogy (good old games), it was called a special collector's edition, they said it had bonus content, they said the controls got the Corruption upgrade.

When Activision announced Modern Wiifare, they just said "Wii is getting Modern Wiifare, ported by Treyarch."  This DOES NOT EXCITE MY LOINS.  So Treyarch has a year to destroy HD assets and cram it into their Wii engine.  I wasn't enthused with my World at War purchase, so I'm skeptical about how this is going to turn out, which will also likely be $50.

World at War had a decent feature set, but the controls weren't refined to the point where it smoothly translated to the visual movements, so I fought the controls for one night then sold the game.

BlackNMild2k1August 05, 2009

As long as they include all the content from the PS360 versions of the game, I will give this consideration.
But I still think it is a sneaky way to capitalize on Wii sales by tricking Wii gamers into thinking it is the same game being released on the HD systems by releasing them side by side.

If they really want to capture teh "core" gamer on this, it should be a MW1.5 that is MW1 with all the improvements brought about by MW2, like the MPTrilogy as was mentioned by Pro.

StratosAugust 05, 2009

Maybe Conduit will force them to make COD4 fully featured and not drop special elements left and right. Conduit set a standard and any relatively talented studio should be able to raise that standard with a little TLC dev time.

I do hope they include the DLC stuff.

Could be that they are tired of being treated like second bananas.  I mean that they finally deigned to develop a title for the Wii, but instead of making new content, just ported old content, either stupidly unaware or knowingly aware that nobody wants crusty 2 year old content.  I'd rather have something new or a Call of Duty game specifically designed for Wii, not the 360's and PS3's sloppy seconds.

KDR_11kAugust 05, 2009

IMO they should make a game that contains the story of MW1 and 2 in one package even if it's missing some of the details (i.e. not the full CoD4 campaign but a shortened one) so when they release MW3 they can release the Wii version simultaneously without worrying about players lacking the context.

Do you really need context for any of the COD games?  How many war simulation games have there been?

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 05, 2009

Non-casuals say the story is important to the game.

Here's the thing that really bugs me.  The Wii's embarrasingly poor third party support is often blamed on the hardware gap between the Wii and the other consoles.  We get PS2/PSP ports and spin-offs because when the third party makes the game for the other consoles, the Wii can't handle a decent direct port so we get something else which is usually inferior.  Of course the question "why the hell aren't you guys making the game for the MARKET LEADER in the first place?" is always there, but "our game cannot be done on your Gamecube 1.5" is not the worst excuse in the world.

But this ain't some old ass PS2 game.  This is an Xbox 360/PS3 game.  They're actually attempting to take a popular game from the other consoles and put it on the Wii.  Out of context it's like "hey it's about time you guys gave that a try!"  But they just HAD to fuck it up!  If they can port this PS360 game to the Wii then surely they can port the new game.  But they're not and there is no valid excuse for that.  It's just "let's fuck over the Wii owners" yet again and the whole thing just feels like some weird personal vendetta against Nintendo and its fans.

Now who says the port of Call of Duty 4 is even going to be any good.  The "hardware is teh suxors" excuse may very well still apply.  But they're going to the effort to attempt a port and yet they're doing it for the old game and not the new one.  How can they expect ANY Wii fan with any pride or self-respect to buy this?  It is an outright insult.  Now I'm sure in the absense of, well, ANYTHING worth a shit there are Wii owners who will buy this if it turns out decent.  And that sucks because it just rewards what I see as outright ABUSE of the Wii userbase.

It's like everyone just wants to con us.  Don't anyone get on my ass for not supporting third parties on the Wii ever again.  They treat us like garbage and they started it.  So fuck 'em.  They have not earned my support.  They'll earn my money when they treat me like a guest instead of a fucking mark.

BlackNMild2k1August 05, 2009

I agree with Ian. If you can port the game now, then you could've ported it 2 years ago. All this "its not possible on Wii" is BS and they know it. The Wii hardware hasn't changed and you were doing similar games last gen on lesser hardware, so the 3rd "excuse makers" can keep right on making excuses when this doesn't live up to sales expectations.

It is still a very dirty trick to release the 2 year old port side by side with the new HD release and blanket it all under one HYPE machine.
It's very smart on Actiblizz's part but still a very very dirty trick.

BeautifulShyAugust 05, 2009

If you don't care for this title you don't have to get. They aren't holding a gun to your head.
I personally am tired with this whole spiel about third party support.

BlackNMild2k1August 05, 2009

But this is like being treated like the red-headed step child.

Mom just went out and bought everyone new outfits for the coming school year.
Everyone is trying on their new outfit... but you.
you say, "Mom, where are my new school outfits?"
mom says"Oh...., uhhh.... hmmmm... forgot to get you something.... here, take your brothers clothes from last year. He only wore them a few dozen times but they should still fit you"

Is that really how a Wii only owner deserves to be treated? Should we be grateful just to finally get even though the HD systems get the new shiny updated version? Are we really happy with hand-me downs that while they are new to us, are not all that new looking regardless of how much effort you put into making it look like it was.

DeguelloJeff Shirley, Staff AlumnusAugust 05, 2009

No Maxi, Ian actually had a very good point about all this.  Wii owners get worse games because of all this 3rd party trolling and this situation is lose-lose for Wii owners.  If the game is a moderate success, Activision will be be all "Well they'll take down-ports and late ports of ANYTHING" and we'll get that crap in the future too.  If the game is a flop (Like I know and they probably know too) They'll act all indignant and complete the same self-fulfilling prophecy they ran on the GameCube years ago and lessen support while releasing more trolling press releases about Grandmas and duct tape.  I'm getting pretty fed up with it and if I were rich enough I'd buy a copy of Mario Kart Wii every time some sniveling third party tries to pass off a late port or some "casual" schlock on the Wii userbase.

Wii owners have suffered the crappy third party support for long enough.  They've endured the spinoffs, the PSP ports, the "casual" crap nobody bought yet everybody knew the Wii owners wanted, and all the empty promises in between.

The Wii has won.  They fell in line behind the PS2, now they should fall in behind something that's selling faster than it.  Is it so wrong to demand attention from them?

Edit:  To expand BnM's analogy, imagine if the stepchild has had All A's on his report card and his step-brothers got C's.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 05, 2009

"They aren't holding a gun to your head."

They're also not producing a desirable product.

One of the biggest 3rd Party Publishers in the world has limited resources and faith to make Wii games related to their biggest-name products, at all, and it turns out to be a waste of everyone's time and interest.  That's the sentiment being expressed.  (sounds familiar...)

If non-casual gamers can be thought of as being picky, non-casual Wii gamers are completely unforgiving (<< that's the niche audience Activision THINKS will buy their Bang-Bang War Gun products, not the grandmas and kids, right?).  Two strikes, you're out.

I disagree.  Since pretty much every third party treats the Wii like something they dug out from under their big toenail, Wii owners do not have much out in the market place to enjoy.  Third party options are slim pickings and Nintendo themselves doesn't provide enough first party content to make up for it.

It isn't like one third party dicking Wii owners around.  It's ALL of them.  So you can't just go "well then play something else" when the problem is so widespread.  There isn't something else to play.  For someone who considers this an important issue well over 90% of the Wii library is affected by this in some way.

This is true except the reason Nintendo doesn't provide enough games is because they just physically can't.  They release more games than anybody ever year and they still can't cover all the bases, which leaves it up to the third parties and, like Ian and I think, there's probably some kind of contest between third parties to see who can troll the Wii the hardest.  And this theory will continue to be believed until a few third parties make tangible moves that result in high-quality, high-profile games to the market leader's direction and not just more lip flap and empty promises.

I agree but considering we're talking about Activision I'm expecting a 60$/€ price. Some third parties are so full of themselves they think they can price their lame spinoffs higher than Nintendo's blockbuster games and then act surprised as they get terminated with extreme prejudice.

StratosAugust 06, 2009

I think $40 would be a fair balance. Would you think $50 would be OK if they included all of the DLC and it didn't have gimped features?

It's not sounding like there's going to be anyone from here for me to play online with. Oh well, fewer friend codes to enter.

StratosAugust 06, 2009

I plan on getting it, Insanolord. I never played it on PC so as long as it isn't trash I'll get it on Wii since I prefer Wii IR > Mouse/Keyboard.

Cool, we'll have to play. From what I hear about your Conduit skills I want you on my team in this, not against me.

My advice here is to not let all the politics of the situation factor into the decision when you're looking at a game. Don't buy a game to prove a point, or refrain from buying a game to prove a point. Buy games because you think you'll enjoy playing them, and don't let anything else matter.

StratosAugust 06, 2009

I really hope and expect WiiSpeak support. In my opinion it is a standard now and is necessary for any FPS.

BwrJim!August 06, 2009

yeah, if there is any chance of playing online with friends I would get it.

This depends on how well the game controls (will I rely on gaming press to tell how it turns out, or forumers?  hmm), and the price.

KDR_11kAugust 06, 2009

Don't worry, the primary controls will be dual analog via the classic controller but if you don't have that you can aim with the d-pad on the Wiimote.

Man, Activision thinks of everything.

If they think any harder they might open a portal to hell. Then we're in trouble.

According to my Mom Gerard Butler is a god and can do anything. So yes, yes they can.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 06, 2009

Anything but fix 3rd parties.

StratosAugust 06, 2009

Not even the Gerard Butler and all his 300 Spartans could fix 3rd Excuse Makers.

KDR_11kAugust 06, 2009

That depends on whether you mean fix as in "make them work properly" or "cut their balls off".

ShyGuyAugust 07, 2009

Here's why I'm not totally down on this port. COD4 was a triple A game. Even though it will be a downgrade graphically and an old port, we will still be getting AAA animation, voice acting and level design. If they can do this at a reduced price then it's a good addition to the Wii library.

Mop it upAugust 07, 2009

I feel like I SHOULD be upset by this news for reasons I don't understand but I'm finding it really difficult to care.

YmeegodAugust 07, 2009

Why are people bitching?  Yeah, it's old but it's one less reason for gamers to buy a secondary console like MS or Sony am I right?  For WII exclusive gamers this is great news since the winter lineup lost it's main contender--RS2 delayed until 2010.

And it's not even out yet so how do you know it's going be a crappy port?

The WII is getting an AAA title in an area were it's weakest in and the "fanboys" complain?  Hell I would bitch more about the 1000's WII exclusive title that suxed ass but I guess that's just me.

Do we know if it will have some new multiplayer modes or maps?

Didn't they do CoD: WaW which was pretty highly praised for Wii?

From what I hear, Wii owners have set the bar pretty low.

It has a 83% average on Gamerankings, the 360 version had a 85% and everything I heard is that it was a very good port for the most part.

D_AverageNovember 15, 2009

Anybody try this out yet?  From what I've seen, the aiming doesn't look as smooth as the conduit.

StratosNovember 15, 2009

I'll be getting the game in the mail when NSMBWii arrives next week so I'll give impressions then.
