New Zelda in the Works

Miyamoto and company are working hard on the new Legend of Zelda, and it might be Wii MotionPlus compatible.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009: The Legend of Zelda concept art

At the Shigeru Miyamoto roundtable tonight, it was revealed that an all-new entry in the Zelda series is in development. One piece of concept art was shown displaying Link and what was possibly a Zora.

The brains at EAD are still working on many new ideas for the new Zelda, but they hope to include Wii MotionPlus support. In fact, depending on how well Wii Sports Resort sells they may make MotionPlus mandatory. Miyamoto also asked the attendees to think about the new Zelda when playing archery and kendo in Wii Sports Resort.

Unfortunately, the game will not arrive until next year at the earliest.

Hurrah! The Big Three part two is go! A Zelda trailer would've been icing, but it's fine if they decided to focus on making the game rather than making a trailer.

NovaQJune 03, 2009

I rode Twilight Princess' hype train all the way, to the point where it had a detrimental effect on my enjoyment of the game itself. I don't mind if they hold off on releasing media until the game is just a few months (maybe six?) away.

AVJune 03, 2009

bah ! I'll believe it when I see it. Maybe October show or something

hioo1Billy Brown, Train GuyJune 03, 2009

I'm still hoping for more realistic sword fights with wii motion plus, they could make zelda magnificent if that works well

Just because a massive epic trailer was NOT shown for Zelda it doesn't mean the game is vaporware. If its creator says that development is underway and ideas were explained and show then it exists.

StratosJune 03, 2009

LOL at talk of new Zelda being vaporware.

I still think someone sneaked a shot of it in there. It's gotta leak some time. I think by weeks end it will be out in the wild.

Mop it upJune 03, 2009

They should make an old man Link. They could title the game The Legend of Zelda: The Last Hurrah.

Word for word from E3 08. They couldn't part with just a little more information?

SvevanEvan Burchfield, Staff AlumnusJune 03, 2009

I'm confused. Did the "small sampling of artwork" reveal the "older and more mature" look for Link?

If so, what is meant by "older and more mature?" When I hear "older and more mature" I think, I don't know, 40s - 60s. What are we comparing "older and more mature" to? The last Zelda game, where he was 17? That could mean Link in his late 20s, early 30s. But if we're simply applying "older and more mature" to the range of ages Link has ever been (10 to 17) then that means Link is going to be 17 again. Which makes this not news, at all.

ShyGuyJune 03, 2009

It's Evan. Hey Evan!

I think it may just refer to how the art style presents him. Typical Japanese Anime style always confuses me anyway. A thirty year old looks fifteen.

I think Matt at IGN said he looked early twenties.

StratosJune 03, 2009

He grew a mustache I'll bet.

Aw, sketchy 30s-something Link would be sweet.

StratosJune 03, 2009

The women chasing him would triple if he had a mustache.

steveyJune 03, 2009

Why does Link have to be a man? Adult Link could just as easily refer to a Female Link!

Mop it upJune 03, 2009

Might as well just have Mario don the green tonic.

Or a special power where Link can change sexes.

LOL, Nintendo doesn't need another character with a gender crisis.

I think we already have a character that's Mario in green...

But not a tonic. Plus he doesn't wield a sword and shield.

Zelda needs to be playable outside of Smash Brothers. They could call the game Zelda's Revenge.

Wii Sports Resort is just a testing ground for Zelda.

Sword
Archery
Rowing
Disc = boomerang
Basketball = bombchu basketball

Myxtika1 AznJune 03, 2009

Where's the exclusive lo-res photo at?

NovaQJune 03, 2009

Alright, blurry awesomeness! That does look pretty similar to TP, though maybe it'll be brighter (which I judge solely from that fire-y stuff in the background). And uh-oh, looks like Link's a righty again...

FAIL cuz you don't throw a boomerang like a frisbee (it'd never come back to you!)

KnowsNothingJune 03, 2009

Fine, move the damn Wiimote to the other side of your body and make a bizarro disc throwing motion.  Same thing.

lol, having seen the art I'm sorry to report that what you see in the background isn't fire. It was actually much less bright, but for whatever reason came out as such due to the extremely low res photo.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 03, 2009

Link = Sean Bean from The Fellowship of the Ring.

You read it here, first.

KDR_11kJune 03, 2009

I find all this media obsession with the word "mature" stupid.

I hope the inclusion of Wii MotionPlus means that they'll include a home-run contest, golf, and tennis in the game.  It wouldn't be a Wii MotionPlus game without them.

vuduJune 03, 2009

Only the director of Nintendo World Report would interrupt his honeymoon to troll the forums.

KDR_11kJune 03, 2009

Yeah, I'd like to know what he knows about the sports minigames in Red Steel 2.

Well, it wouldn't truly be a modern Zelda game without a collection of sometimes silly and arbitrary mini-games that we have to go through to get heart pieces.

LOL It was a rainy day at the beach.

All I'm saying is that I hope they do something with Wii MotionPlus that extends beyond the obvious stick-swinging mechanic.  I'm hopeful as a result of the variety in Wii Sports Resort, but I hope they can translate that to the Zelda universe in a cool way.

EDIT: And archery and fishing don't count.  ;)

There are many, many ways to throw a frisbee.

If we are suppose to take our hints from Resort, I would guess this next Zelda will be alot slower than what we're use to.

But there's only a few ways to properly throw a boomerang...

but we're getting off topic. Until this Zelda title is close to being released, I won't be taking a ride on the hype train. Even though I enjoyed TP, that wait and all the speculation was awful. Never again.

I still don't see how a rainy day is an excuse to come here on your honeymoon. Does she know about these little visits? Besides, there are plenty of activities to play on your honeymoon when it is raining, like card games. Play a card game with her ;)

As for sans-sword M+ possibilities in Zelda, here are a few:
Horseback riding
controlling your shield precisely in defense mode to reflect light and projectiles
using it to control your balance on a narrow ledge
a dart game in the bar
hurling that ball & chain weapon from Twilight Princess
and especially polo. You have a horse, I want to see you ride the horse and hit balls with your sword or a club.

Yes, but a square is always a rectangle, not the other way around.

In Resort and Woods, I'm going to try all sorts of different styles.

So I wonder....if they don't want to announce Zelda till 10 but could have announced it this year, could it be ready to go in 10? Could we possibly see Galaxy and Zelda in one year?

kraken613June 03, 2009

Sorry to say it but GoNintedo just basically dissed you for putting that picture up.

As I told you yesterday, there were absolutely no pictures allowed during the event. We are respecting Nintendo/Mr. Miyamoto's request, and will follow along with the guidelines.

Thank you to all that sent word our way. I was happy to see that most of you were upset to see the image leaked, and the rules broken. You're a good bunch of people, you are!

StratosJune 03, 2009

Pshhhh! It's a piece of concept art. And it's a bad shot anyway. It's one step away from being a silhouette in my book. Can barely make anything out on it.

kraken613June 03, 2009

Yeah, I thought it was pretty funny.

DjunknownJune 04, 2009

So... Reggie didn't take the person who took this shot by the collar, and threatened to eat him raw?

No Ninja Assassin Lawyers with a Cease and Desist order?

EDIT: Meh, its just an artwork piece. There's plenty of other games to fawn over before the next e3 hits.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 04, 2009

Link is curious about holes.

ThePermJune 04, 2009

such a metaphor, every time he comes out of one of those holes he is more manly

NovaQJune 04, 2009

Since there are a couple separate threads with new Wii Zelda speculation going on, I thought I'd try to consolidate. Here's the thread.

Perm's reconstruction of the art is amazing. Someone should post a side-by-side with the hi-res art that Nintendo finally released (because we had already leaked it, I'd wager).

ThePermJune 07, 2009

yeah, if i had read that it just resembled twilight princess art i would have just matched it up even more, definitely.

VlankJune 22, 2009

Maybe it's just me. But I've noticed that everyone thinks that the female character in the picture could be a form of a "Zora" or even Zelda herself.
Well maybe I'm nuts but take this into consideration.
1.jpg"
There's no sword in his hands.
Now I know that this has already been noticed.
However, look again at the girl next to him, upside down.
Her head/cape kind of looks like the bottom of the master sword while her skin is an odd gray-like color. Kind of like the blade. Also notice the jewel on her chest around the same area the master sword has one on the holder.
Is it possible the master sword plays a more significant role (as the King in Wind Waker), also noting that in the last few games the master sword has been referred to as a more "living" object in the series. Maybe it's just me but eh, what do you think?

steveyJune 22, 2009

Yes, that has also been noticed in the main Zelda thread.

The only debate now is heads or tails.....
swordposs2.jpg

VlankJune 22, 2009

That makes sense.
However, what if she only transformed into a human form at certain times kinda like Midna?
lol
Just a fun idea I suppose.
But those pics make a good point.  :P
