Six Games Spotted Early in the Wii Shop

Super Metroid is set for a re-release at last.

It's been several months since any images have been uploaded to the Channel earlier than their respective games' release dates, but now screenshots for six games have been uncovered on the Wii Shop Channel. The first two are RPGs, Shining in the Darkness for Genesis and Neutopia for TurboGrafx-16, both of which have already been released in Japan.

The third game, Cratermaze for the TurboGrafx-16, is a an action game based on a Japanese Doraemon game but with new characters and was released as Booby Kids on the Famicom. Donkey Kong Jr. Math, which was announced in Nintendo Power and has been released in the rest of the world was also found in the Wii Shop.

The final two games are both Metroid titles: Metroid and Super Metroid. While Metroid has been re-released multiple times on Game Boy Advance, fans have long been clamoring for Super Metroid, a game often considered one of the best SNES games. While no release date is currently set, it is likely that the Metroid games will be released sometime before the launch of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on August 27th.

An additional three Sega games have been rated by the ESRB. Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master received an E10+ rating for animated blood and fantasy violence and Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole and Ghouls 'N Ghosts both received an E.

Super Metroid is a game that I've wanted to play for a long time and since I never owned a SNES I'm glad the opportunity to finally play that game with an adaquate SNES game pad substitute (classic controller) will finally be arriving

Fixed.

(I own Super Metroid but I can't wait for it to come out on VC, my snes game pads are getting old and warn out X_X).

Super Metroid was perhaps one of the best SNES experiences outside of Chrono Trigger. I'll never forget the first time I used the speed boots or the X-Ray vision.

This game owns me! Easiest VC purchase when it comes out.

BlackNMild2k1August 08, 2007

I might actually take the plunge and put money down on a VC game, as I've never really given either of those Metroids a chance since I never figured out how to get out of the main corridor in the original Metroid and didn't get far in Super Metroid. But I didn't own either game, and taking only 15-20 minutes to play it at a friends house kind of ruined the experience and made me not purchase it.

I've always wanted to give it another chance so this might be a real reason to finally purchase a Wii Points card and make it happen.

I have Super Metroid on SNES and played it not too long ago, but I'll still buy it on VC. I'm very glad that everyone will have a chance to play it after all these years. What I would really like is a Zero Mission-style remake for Metroid 2 and Super Metroid.

Also, Landstalker is supposed to be the Genesis answer to Zelda. I haven't played it, but some people think it's awesome.

Neutopia is the TG-16's answer to Zelda. It is quite literally a Zelda clone, but, I mean, it's a Zelda clone.

Probably my favorite TG-16 game of all time.

LouieturkeyAugust 08, 2007

Well I've been wanting more RPGs on the VC so Shining in the Darkness and Neutopia will serve me well I think. Guess I need to buy more points now. I'll have three whole games since the only one so far I've bought was Shining Force.

Got my 800 points ready for you Super Metroid!

I'll agree to the Metroid 2 remake but I don't think Super Metroid should ever be remade it's perfect as is.

CanOfWorms.Open();

Super Metroid could use a few of the interface streamlining features that later games introduced to deal with the cumbersome ability selection. Lessons have been learned in game design since Super Metroid was released, such as button overloading and context-sensitive actions, and it's easy to see how they could be applied. Holding R to fire missiles would be particularly nice, but I also like the way Zero Mission handles running.

Smoke39August 08, 2007

That's just it, though. Besides a few relatively minor interface refinements there's not much you could do to improve Super Metroid.

miedoAugust 08, 2007

Super Metroid could use grips from Fusion. Only thing that bugs me.

MashiroAugust 08, 2007

UGH NO. Grips are the worst thing added to the Metroid series I wish they would do away with it.

You're not wrong. The dash button definitely needs to done away with.

Still, I'll gladly repurchase what I consider to be the best game that will ever be made.

I can't wait to pick up Super Metroid when it hits the VC in the next couple of weeks! It's the most obvious VC purchase for me since Punch-Out came out a couple months ago. I never owned Super Metroid but I have played through it before. The game is unbelievably good!

With Metroid Prime 3: Corruption coming out on MONDAY August 27th. And VC titles being released every Monday. If I were a betting man, I think I'd put my money on Super Metroid coming out on Monday, August 27th.

I also second (or third) the GBA / DS remake of Metroid 2. Metroid 2 is actually the first Metroid game I beat and it really added a lot of awesome stuff to the series. The Spider-ball, space jump, etc. Along with the creepy Metroid evolutions.

I would almost take a remake of Metroid 2 over a new 2-D Metroid title (Metroid Dread anyone?). Either one I'd buy immediately.

Why grip when you can wall/ball jump?

Aaaactually, I think Metroid and Super Metroid will be released AFTER Metroid Prime 3. The trend is for Nintendo to "ride the wave" of a new game's popularity with VC. Twilight Princess was a launch title--look how many Zelda titles are out now for VC. Similarly, Paper Mario was released not so long after the average Wii owner had exhausted Super Paper Mario. We might see NES Metroid before Prime 3 as a pre-hype title, but I'd bet money Super Metroid will come out post Prime 3.

18 DaysAugust 08, 2007

When are they going to add Gameboy games and hence, Metroid 2 and 4 to VC?

Ian SaneAugust 09, 2007

Nintendo probably had some warped view that while the GBA and DS continued to exist as seperate "pillars" that having Gameboy games on the VC might somehow affect GBA sales, since full Gameboy backwards compatibility is part of the appeal. But yeah GB and GBC games should be on there. Most of those games aren't in stores anymore and the DS can't play them.

And adding the wall grip to Super Metroid would change the game too much. In Metroid Fusion the areas are designed with the grip in mind so there's more balance. But Super Metroid isn't designed that way so grips would just make the game easier. Recommending control options is one thing but changing Super Metroid's gameplay not only makes no sense but it would make the game worse.

Plus I say 2D game design has gotten worse since 2D has become associated with portables. The 16 bit era is the peak of 2D design for that was the last time that 2D games were treated as major games and not niche titles or portable games. The game industry doesn't have the same expertise for 2D game design that they used to. Thus virtually every attempt I've seen to "improve" a 16-bit 2D game has made it worse. Leave them as they are until the industry relearns what they forgot.

Ian you deserve this more than ever:

Also the wall grip was a freaking horrible function and a poor excuse and reason to get rid of the wall jump (or change the wall jump from how it was in Super Metroid).
