To boost sluggish sales of the handheld, Nintendo falls back to the time-honored tradition of releasing new colors.

Nintendo Co. Ltd. has revealed two new shell colors for their ubiquitous DS Lite system. Metallic Rose looks almost identical to the Noble Pink color released a year ago, but Gloss Silver stands out a bit more.

These new colors would no doubt increase demand for the system beyond current levels, if that were even possible within the physical laws of the universe.

Five million DS users have logged on to play their games online in over 200 million game sessions.

NINTENDO NEWS: NINTENDO DS GAMING SERVICE TOPS 5 MILLION USERS, 200 MILLION GAME SESSIONS

Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection has crossed two huge milestones within just days of one another. Worldwide, since its launch in November 2005, Nintendo's wireless gaming service has now connected more than 5 million unique Nintendo DS™ owners, and those gamers have racked up more than 200 million game-play sessions. Worldwide, nearly 65 games can be played via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The five most popular globally are Animal Crossing®: Wild World, Mario Kart® DS, Metroid® Prime Hunters, Pokémon® Diamond and Pokémon Pearl.

"Nintendo DS gamers globally use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as an easy, fun place to find fellow players, all without paying anything extra for the service," explains Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "The milestones represent millions of hours of fun and camaraderie despite miles between players."

Nintendo DS continues to enjoy record-breaking success. According to new figures from the independent NPD Group, DS was again the top-selling video game system in April, with more than 470,000 units sold in the United States alone. That's nearly 16,000 per day.

Nintendo DS also finds success beyond the stereotypical young male gamer. According to internal Nintendo demographic tracking studies, in less than 18 months, DS purchases have increased by 42 percent among women, 127 percent among people 30 and older and 212 percent among people 35 and older.

It's funny how in this context, sluggish = 100,000+ per week. But I am hearing that DS is starting to become relatively easy to find in Japan, so now is probably a good time.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 30, 2007

Are they just painted such that the coating will just scratch off?

CericMay 30, 2007

I thought the lights color came from their actual plastic and then they get a clear coat.

Also the DS had a 32.10% decrease between two of the weeks this month as well.

KlapauciusMay 30, 2007

I think the fact that demand outstrips supply is such a good thing for Nintendo, that now that supply meets demand they want to increase demand again. They can say "hey, we can't made DS's fast enough!"

I just wonder if they've been sitting on various colors in warehouses, waiting to launch them in response to dropped demand.

CericMay 30, 2007

I think the clear answer is yes. To much of a coincidence.

"But I am hearing that DS is starting to become relatively easy to find in Japan, so now is probably a good time."

You would almost think that being able to meet demand and thus, you know, satisfy customers would be viewed as a good thing by Nintendo. But then if I became a multi-millionaire I would almost immediately quit my job so the concept of "rich getting richer" always seemed kind of pointless to me which I guess is why I'm not running a huge corporation.

Nintendo could probably not ever sell a DS again and still make fistfuls of cash just selling DS games to the existing userbase.

The headline was meant to be a joke.

Johnny, the majority of visitors lack sarcasm-radar.

I really like the Metallic Rose color...It's very copper-ish...

CericMay 30, 2007

Mine works fine thanks.

Sluggish?

I'm pretty sure one of those weeks was Golden Week. Sales would have been unusually brisk.
So how many colors of the DS lite are there now (in Japan)?

Metallic Rose, huh?

"Not the flesh-colored bath, Man-Man!"

CericMay 31, 2007

I'm pretty sure it was. Next weeks number will be a little more telling. If history serves that should be sometime a little later this weak. If there is still more than a 10% drop between the weeks then the DS is probably starting its decline.
