A Portuguese magazine confirms the long-standing rumor -- Sega's NiGHTS is back, and it's exclusive to Wii. Updated with the official title and tentative Japanese release date. Updated AGAIN with the offical NA/European press release.

Update (5:06pm, 4/2/2007)

Here is the official press release from Sega of America and Sega Europe. In it a Fall '07 release date is revealed.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (April 2, 2007) – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams™, the long awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed NiGHTS franchise that gave gamers the freedom to fly in a world of dreams and imagination. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is being developed for Nintendo’s Wii™ video game console and is scheduled to be released in Fall 2007.

“We plan to deliver a gameplay experience never before seen on the Wii with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. “The game takes full advantage of the unique Wii Remote controller enabling gamers to guide NiGHTS through spectacularly designed dream worlds intertwined with a story about hope and courage."

As a fantasy jester called NiGHTS, players will fly through Nightopia, a rich and vibrant world where dreams come to life. With the innovative Wii Remote, gamers will experience a heightened sense of gliding, spiraling, and looping through seven mystical dream worlds packed with high-flying adventure. Players must find inventive ways to confront the “Nightmarens" from the neighboring dark world of Nightmare using amazing acrobatic skills, freedom of flight, and other special abilities to protect Nightopia. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is an adventure filled with courage, hope and inspiration that the whole family will enjoy this holiday season.

Update (12:47am, 4/2/2007)

In an official press release from Sega Japan, the name NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams was revealed. They also gave a tentative release date of "Winter '07" for Japan.

Original Article (3/31/2007)

Although not a hugely successful game, NiGHTS into Dreams for the Sega Saturn is a certifiable cult hit in the video game world. For nearly a decade, rumors have swirled about a possible sequel, and Sonic Team is finally making it happen on Nintendo's Wii system.

Portuguese magazine Maxi Consolas has a feature article about the game, including the first screenshots and an interview with one of the game's developers, Takeshi Iizuka. Due to the language barrier, we're still unclear on some of the details, and obviously Sega is still reserving much information until later. Here is what we can glean so far:

  • The game uses a similar graphical style as the original NiGHTS -- colorful and fanciful.
  • NiGHTS (a flying clown-like character who inhabits people's dreams) is still the main character. There may be other playable characters, but Iizuka is vague on that topic.
  • The gameplay seems to be much like the Saturn original, centered around flying through 3D environments. There will be new aerobatic moves, though.
  • Some type of motion control is obviously involved, but the true nature of the game's controls are still under wraps.
  • New modes include a two-player mode and some kind of online feature. The article seems to indicate that episodic, downloadable content will include new levels such as the Christmas NiGHTS game once delivered to Phantasy Star Online players.

The magazine article mentions that Sega will officially announce the NiGHTS sequel in early April, so stay tuned for new details very soon.

I'm ready for this. I never got to play the original, so I hope I get to sometime for the Wii.

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterMarch 31, 2007

Boy did you guys pick the PERFECT day to post this...

DasmosMarch 31, 2007

Why is it perfect?

Is pap still saying this is an April Fools joke?

I'm honestly split in half about it. On one hand, its looks too official to be just a joke. On the other, some people have gone to GREAT lengths for a joke.

But I wasn't talking about that. I am saying that April fools is a BAD day to post newstories. The Nights announcement is still being debated, so posting it on April fools will fan the flames for some.

Still the 31st Pacific Time. And that's all that really counts.

Have you seen some of the stuff they've done at Rarewithcproject in previous years? Last year, they started setting up early march. This year's looking to be like it was set up at least in February.

Heh. My settings show that not only the article but all the Talkback posts above this one were posted on 3/31. Obviously, it's not a joke. We haven't done that in years and don't intend to restart.

JonLeungApril 01, 2007

Other sites have tossed around scans and news stories about this in the last week, so it's unlikely to be an April Fool's joke.

Unless it's a really good joke that dupes everyone and they started the rumour mills going late last month just to do so.

Actually, for NiGHTS fans, then it would also simultaneously be a bad joke.

GamerGeorgeApril 01, 2007

It's obviously hard to believe that Sega has actually listened to the fans pleas for the first time in what, years? With that said, based on the first pieces of media released for the game, I think it's looking good and I definitely can't wait to see more, especially video of it.

CericApril 01, 2007

Those environments look sort of scary.

What some fail to realize is that this information is sourced to an issue of a Portuguese magazine. Even if "Maxi Comforted" is a real publication, and even if NWR isn't running this as a 2007/04/01 prank, it would still be the magazine's APRIL issue. It started hitting the web 2007/03/30-31 because it must be printed far in advance to hit the streets *approximately* in time. I'm going to continue to take this with a grain of salt.

What some fail to realize is that there are three separate European publications with the same info. The Portuguese one just happened to come out first.

DjunknownApril 01, 2007

*ahem*

I don't think 3 seperate European gaming mags are that coordinated to run a joke like this.

Now mention that Mother 3 will make it stateside, now that's funny! devil.gif

CalibanApril 01, 2007

"Portuguese magazine Maxi Comforted..."

The magazine is called MaxiConsolas, and the right translation is MaxiConsoles.
Consola could also mean to confort, unfortunately web/electronic translators give out of context translations most of the times.

codemonkeyApril 01, 2007

I was responding to the poster that said 'this was posted on the 31st, so it can't be a hoax.' As the article states, there've been rumours of a sequel for years, and it failed to mention other sources. Still skeptical, but wouldn't mind being proved wrong - never played Nights; I'd like to see what the fuss is about.

CalibanApril 01, 2007

If anyone listened to the latest Game Scoop podcast from IGN, you will hear that it is indeed true that this game is coming, in fact they said that they knew about it but obviously couldn't say anything, and then they joke about how the European gaming media or PRs don't give a damn about NDAs.

LouieturkeyApril 01, 2007

Hello, this has been talked about for a week now and Sega has yet to deny it. In fact, they've confirmed it. If it isn't happening, Sega is the one's pulling the joke, not anyone else. If this is a joke, they will really piss off tons of fans.

ThePermApril 01, 2007

if you play christmas nights on april fools day you get to play as nights villian Reala face-icon-small-smile.gif

BlackNMild2k1April 01, 2007

Because I feel this post will get more attention in this thread than where it was originally posted....

Hey SUPER, we could use some translation over here. I tried the automated stuff but it didn't make a whole lot of sense out of the Japanese. Not enought sense to quote anyway.

Luigi DudeApril 01, 2007

Well now that we know the game is indeed real, all that's left now is to pray that the game end's up good. But unless Sega is able to bring back everyone that was involved with the original for the Saturn, I have no faith in this game at all. Sonic Team these days is incapable of doing anything great let alone decent. The best anyone can really hope for is something that's just remotely passable.

CericApril 02, 2007

They could inlcude all of the former NiGHTs games as well. Some would consider that Great.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorApril 02, 2007

Hey BnM, I just posted what I got from reading some reliable translations around the net. Basically that's the title and the Japanese release date is Winter '07. According to Chris Kohler, Sega usually ships games at aroudn the same time so that may be a good idea of the US date as well.

Ian SaneApril 02, 2007

This will be the real test for Sonic Team. They've been a joke for years but their past work is still held in high esteem. NiGHTS is widely regarded as a classic but I imagine most people have never played it. It was on the Saturn. I sure as hell have never played it. Who owned a Saturn? I think a big reason why their is demand for a sequel is because a lot of people have heard that it's this great game but want it released on a console they own. We want NiGHTS 2 because we want to TRY NiGHTS out without hunting for an old console that wasn't very popular to begin with. So this is the ultimate test to see if Sonic Team can still deliver because there will actually be interest in this game.

I want them to get it right because, damn it, there's been demand for this sequel for so long and it's almost unfair for it to suck when we've waited over ten years.

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusApril 02, 2007

This is one of the few instances where I truly and fully agree with Ian, Sonic Team is showing that if they get off their lazy asses they can make something thats beyond passable and actually good and playable despite a could of flaws that irritated some people (Sonic and the Secret Rings) which was a nice recovery from the abysmal sonic the hedgehog on 360 and PS3. I really think that the Wii remote can be great with the flight mechanics of NiGHTS game IF Sonic Team nails the controls down nicely and gives you a good sense of freedom of flight then the game can be considered a success in the controls and game play categories, Sonic Team already proved that they can make above average graphics on Wii.

If the episodic content is true then that can nicely bring interest back into the game to increase its longevity. And I'm curious to hear whats the multiplayer going to be about.

AwesomeManApril 02, 2007

I just read the article on this site and it said Xmas NiGHTS was Downloadable content in PSO, it was actually pretty much a demo NiGHTS disc for Saturn with the special feture to make the level have an Xmas theme if the Saturn's clock was set to 12/25.

also episodic content is the worst idea in gaming ever, worse than the idea that hunting levels in sonic would be good.

ThePermApril 02, 2007

pff, i played x-mas NiGHTS yesterday. On April Fools so that i can play as Reala(who looks alot like shadow). Those who never played it...have really missed out!

I realized the same thing WHILE recording this week's RFN. So tune in Wednesday to enjoy the hilarity of our realization.

Okay, but it was also downloadable content in PSO. Look here:

Scroll down to the screenshots and you can see Christmas NiGHTS. It could be transferred from the GameCube to the GBA for (temporary) portable play.

CericApril 02, 2007

In Theory My copy wouldn't do it. (Or quest on single player for that matter.)

MysticGohanApril 02, 2007

Hmmm... How will this Nights fair? I mean the original was done by Yuji Naka, and we know he has left sonic team. Is he onboard for this project? we know his feeling on Nights. I hope Sega's not gonna Butcher this.

Yuji Naka is nowhere near this one.

The original director is on board though, as far as I can tell.

MysticGohanApril 03, 2007

Heh, that's kinda good to hear " The Original Director" But it's sad to hear Yuji isn't working on this. Since it is his creation, I just hope it's as fun as the original, which I still have for my SS. Regardless, it had alot of gems face-icon-small-smile.gif And Technically the Saturn was the first console to go On-line, via add-on.
