Pokemon Battle Revolution will be the first Wii online game in America; more titles are coming, says Reggie.

Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime said in a DICE interview that the tools needed to get Wii games online are now starting to find their ways into the hands of developers.

Talking with Dean Takahashi of The Mercury News, Reggie stated that Wii online development kits have already been distributed and more online titles are on the way to America, the first one being Pokemon Battle Revolution. (Battle Revolution does not currently have a solid U.S. release date.)

Also during the interview, the Regginator said that he believes it's only a question of "when" the Wii will surpass the Xbox 360 in terms of North American market share: "It's clear [Microsoft is] slowing down. It's not unthinkable to see that next year we could surpass their installed base."

"We're about moving to the next rocket stage in our growth," Reggie said.

Now that's an aggressive statement.

Hopefully they back it up all the way, as Microsoft isn't exactly being a weak competitor in the US.

UltimatePartyBearFebruary 09, 2007

It's about time. I hope this means more information on how online Wii games are going to work will start leaking soon.

JonLeungFebruary 09, 2007

Has anyone confirmed if Pokémon Battle Revolution's 12-digit Friend Code was actually to allow it to battle against DS players with Pokémon Diamond/Pearl via Wi-Fi?

I still hope that was the case and that not every game will require a separate code.

But at least developers are getting the dev kits now. Especially if the "separate Friend Code" thing was never meant to be for all games, there's no excuse now!

SORRY, TOO LITTLE TOO LATE, GIVE UP NOW.

Weren't the exact words saying that the online kits had been "seeded"?!?!?

NinGurl69 *hugglesFebruary 09, 2007

Well yeah, 98% of online kits went to oh.... POKEMON DEVELOPERS

This is true...does this include third party developers, or just those developers working on Nintendo-published titles?

NinGurl69 *hugglesFebruary 09, 2007

Yeah, no one of importance.

Ian SaneFebruary 09, 2007

Better late than never but what was with the delay? Now STARTING to get in the hands of developers? Come on.

As cool as it is to see Reggie call the Xbox 360 out I think the more interesting fact is that he didn't mention Sony, like the PS3 is such a joke that it isn't even in the equation. Though I guess he could be talking from the assumption of MS being number two and Nintendo's first goal is to pass them. But Sony's only number one if you count the PS2 as a supported console and everyone knows old consoles don't count. MS is currently number one and Nintendo is number two.

Agreed...

What the hell took so long?

Viewtiful marioFebruary 09, 2007

about time, I hope MK: Armagedon is delayed for online play, I'm shure everyone would understand if they did.

It'd be awsome if in a couple of months we start getting patches to make current games online, imagin online multiplayer for raymman, excite truck or even Red Steel (say what you will about it, people like it).

Then again I don't know how "patches" work so don't flame me if what I said was rediculus.

Half a year ago I would've never seen that coming.

NeoThunderFebruary 09, 2007

Are you stupid or something.....

You can't make a game that has already come out give it a "patch" and make it an online game.

First of all, if it isn't ment to go online in the first place....how can you go online and download a "patch" to allow online play

Second, if you are talking about a downloaded patch, there is not enough room on the Flash memory to hold all the additional data that is needed

that Baby guyFebruary 09, 2007

Here's what I want to know: Is Reggie talking worldwide? Could he actually be referring North America? After all, the Wii has already surpassed the 360 in Japan. Is it possible they expect to outsell the 360 in North America in this year alone?

I wouldn't be surprised if Wii outsold Xbox 360 in this year, it is still selling like hot cakes and is rapidly approacing 360.

Are you stupid or something? You could make it so patches could be DLed to an SD Card. Is there really any reason to call people names because they may be wrong about something? Get over yourself.

Viewtiful marioFebruary 09, 2007

Dang, so much for asking not to be flamed.

MarioAllStarFebruary 09, 2007

The Wii itself could apply some sort of patch to the game. The game doesn't necessarily have to built-in support for it. Though the term "wrapper" is probably more appropriate because you can't really patch non-writeable media. It would sort of intercept certain calls.

Anyway, the patch idea is pretty unlikely and would be difficult for games not designed for it (or so I would imagine).

CericFebruary 09, 2007

All I have to say is that Pokemon Battle Revolution better come out beside the newest in the series, I think we get them in March right? I know its mid year. Because I sure do NOT want to wait till Next year to get online games. Thats terrible. In fact its like NOA is trying to walk a tightrope. What is the most I can get away with without looking like I'm working for someone.

I have not been impressed with NoA's handling of the Wii.

AcefonduFebruary 09, 2007

Yay, good news. Hopefully third parties won't bastardize online play with friend codes, unless the Dev kits require it.

It definately was uncalled for, personally I don't see why you couldn't have an "expansion" Pack esque patch that adds online either. But hey there are more programming inclined people than me here, maybe they can answer that, is it possible to add online to an already released game in a larger patch?

CericFebruary 09, 2007

Methinks the biggest problem is that the media the game is stored on is not rewritable. That is the biggest hold-up I can see on something like that. In effect a patch would be something that could tap into the game and use its assets but it would be its own individual thing in this case.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are slated for an April Launch in America, so that's the earliest possible time PBR could come out... I personally anticipate a May or June release date for PBR.

Well it's good to see Nintendo confirming online kits have gone out to developers.

About Reggie talking smack, do he really think MS is going to roll over for Nintendo?

Yeah I see your point, but sounds like it MAY be able to be done but I personally think it is a mute point because I have a feeling online play will come in the form of sequels!

The patch would be downloaded through some Wii channel of course and unless the patch replaces large parts of the game data a 2MB file would be enough.

"Are you stupid or something? You could make it so patches could be DLed to an SD Card. Is there really any reason to call people names because they may be wrong about something? Get over yourself."

Doubt they would
Only patch we have gotten from nintendo was in the medium of a disk (pokemon channel), much like xbox patches on demo disks that come with magazines
I dont see a time of them releasing patches on the net, as its just inviting people to hack into the patch

*edit: forgot the patch u could get at some events

I was mainly referring through the Wii channel in the future, kind of like what Xbox Live does when you sign into a game it downloads any updates (I really like the feature). Besides I was mainly commenting about his statement that it wouldn't fit on the Wii's flash memory, so instead they could be saved on an SD Card through the Wii connect. Then again I was mainly responding to his uncalled for, childish, gamefaqish insult of someone who didn't even ask for it.

Fine......tell me one console game that has come out without online play, and then a patch was later released for it to allow online anything. Sequals or different games entirely do not count, or something like xbox live arcade games. Tell me one and I will apologize.

Just because it hasn't been done doesn't mean it isn't possible, as some others have stated. Regardless that was never my point, you were rude for no reason other than putting someone down for a suggestion, even if it was "wrong" it still was uncalled for to call them an idiot.

NeoThunderFebruary 11, 2007

Fine....I will go as far to say to it may have been a little much to call him stupid. Maybe saying his request was way too unlikely and there isn't a snowballs chance in hell it will happen.

Ok, so maybe the middleground we can agree on is the idea that this "patch" idea is never going to happen. So Maybe, just maybe.....
can we agree the "Idea" is stupid, and not the person?

Works for me, personally I am of the opinion even IF a patch could be done they wouldn't because a sequel would be a more profitable way of doing things!

NeoThunderFebruary 11, 2007

Agreed

It looks like this conflict has been resolved already, but remember in the future to attack the argument and not the person. Personal attacks are against the forum rules.
