In a new interview with Cubed3, SE's Hiromichi Tanaka talks Virtual Console, Final Fantasy XI on Wii, and more.

There's no question of Square-Enix's newfound love affair with Nintendo, and in an interview on Cubed3, Senior Vice President Hiromichi Tanaka discusses a wide array of topics, including but not limited to the following:

  • There's a 50/50 chance that Chrono Trigger will show up on Virtual Console.

  • Final Fantasy XI can easily be ported to Wii, but because of Nintendo's strict online policies (specifically, the use of Friend Codes), it can't be done.

  • Tanaka commented that Final Fantasy's Anniversary Project will be brought to as many platforms as possible.

Full details on the interview can be found here.

    Chrono Trigger, cool.

Instead of FF XI, I would rather have Squenix put an online mulitplayer mode for FF CC for the Wii.

I bet that FF AP will not be made for the Wii, but it will for the DS.

50/50? What are they going to do, flip a coin? Heads, it goes on the VC, tails, it goes on the GBA?

    Hiromichi Tanaka stated that Square Enix has a habit of starting engines from scratch, proving to be inefficient and they are actively looking to amend this, especially as development costs rise as the next generation starts to hit full stride;

This is probably why they recently announced that they are licensing the Unreal 3 engine. That engine gets around!

I see the FF AP being on all systems in different formats. FF1-3 collection on DS, FF4-6 collection on DS/Wii/PS2/PSP, FF7-9 collection on Wii/PS2/PS3/PSP/360.

Probably won't happen. It'll probably be something stupid like a Super Smash Brothers clone with FF characters from all 12 canon games, as well as Mystic Quest, Tactics(including Advance and the new DS one), and Crystal Chronicles.

    INSTANT BUY!

"Nintendo's strict online policies (specifically, the use of Friend Codes), it can't be done."

I dunno about this one. Even Nintendo games don't actually require friend codes. Also, would Nintendo actually refuse to licence a game if they went about their own online scheme? Case in point PSO.

I wonder how good talks are with 3rd parties if they don't all seem to be all on the same page about stuff.

I would of bought FFXI for wii

The real reason FFXI wouldn't work on Wii is no HD(D). Oops.

You should write HDD because we're not talking about resolution.

I don't even care about FFXI but if Nintendo's online policy is going to prevent certain games from being made then Nintendo should fix it. We've had to deal with developers avoiding Nintendo consoles because of questionable Nintendo policies since the N64 and I think it's completely unacceptable now. The era of Nintendo doing things weird for no reason needs to end.

PSO, unfortunately, was developed during a very different time. A "gentler" time ironically enough. I could see Nintendo forcing such a thing. But if thats the case Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot for actual online.

50/50 for Chrono Trigger on VC?!? WTF, I thought Nintendo Power was saying a lonnnnnnnng time ago that it was a go. Of course, I agree that if it doesn't hit VC it will come to GBA (at least it better!). Maybe I'm weird as I'd much rather see it on VC, even though on GBA I could play it anywhere and still play it on the big screen with the GBA Player. The VC is just so slick. Either way, it is indeed an instant buy.

Is it completely selfish of me to secretly hope that Chrono Trigger doesn't appear on the VC and never gets ported to GBA (or any other system)? face-icon-small-happy.gif

There are more problems with the Wii that will prevent FFXI from being on it besides friends codes...

The freaking install folder on a standard up to date windows installation is like 6 gigs. Where's all that info going to go when most of it is updates that won't be on the disc?

    "Requires 8GB SD card"?
