Episode 492: I Can Do a Lot of Things with One Hand

Unlike alternate Zelda titles, please don't email us examples.

Jon needed to spend some quality time alone; Greg, Gui, and James decided to soldier on without him. James starts the show off with a look at faux-Castlevania Vampire: Master of Darkness for the Sega Game Gear. After playing one of the best titles on the 3DS eShop, he moves on to another, with first thoughts on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice. What can Capcom's writers do with puns when unbound from the English language? This is the world's first real Thought Crime. Greg has a report from his current deployment in Metroid Prime: Federation Force, and then spends more time with his New 3DS analog nub in Monster Hunter Generations. Guillaume wraps up New Business with Nova-111, a turn-based, real-time, action-strategy-sci fi game from a team that normally makes "VR Experiences". He then reflects on losing his 3DS, and the digital footprints of his gaming history.

After the break we try, and fail, to produce a Lords of Thunder Round. In spite of our failures, we do cover a lot of ground. Topics in Listener Mail this week are: pricing Super Mario Run, death of Quality of Life, features for next gen, NX delays, beer, piracy, getting old, and getting jaded. You can cause us muscle strain by sending us an email.

Voting in our Open World RetroActive poll closes Sept 15, at 9 PM Eastern, so go and vote now! Ballot stuffing has completely overwhelmed the poll; just know we can see it.

Good show. Sad for Gui's lost N3DS.

I was expecting a meaty Super Mario Run segment, but I now know that that trifle of a Mario game got exactly the amount of discussion it warrants.

At least until it's released.

Funny you guys talked about Miiverse and today we have this:

Miiverse has untapped potential but Nintendo is still not quite sure how to police it. The fact that it's trying and failing and then saying "screw it, let's just hide the entire sub-community" is probably their only choice.

For what it's worth, I very much enjoy hearing about games like Atelier on the podcast. I never really gave that series much thought before, but after hearing James talk about it on the show a little while ago I have thought about giving it a try now (and likely will at some point). Hearing about cool, hidden gem or older JRPGs that I otherwise may not have been exposed to is one of my favourite parts of the show.

Thanks for talking about Vampire: Master of Darkness, James. It looks like an interesting game to try out.

Sorry to Gui for losing his 3DS. It's always sad to lose something that represented such a time investment/memories.

During the transition to Listener Mail, I thought I was having a stroke. Then I thought James, Greg and Gui were having a stroke. Then I realized they were just being themselves and all was right with the world.

I kinda forgot that the samples I used were from Listener Mail and so hadn't been heard yet. I messed up and it didn't come out the way I wanted it.

It worked though. The listener could identify what you were chanting so it was firmly on the weird end of the continuum of funny. Coming before the listener mail increased my amusement at least

Thanks for answering my email!

My pirating days were short lived periods in college, and mostly constrained to an R4DS and roms, as well as PC emulators.  I find my biggest constraint for games is no longer money, but spare time where I have the energy to devote to gaming, so the incentive largely went away.  That said, I wouldn't feel morally bankrupt if I could find digital copies of my old Amiga games to play at this point, given how many of them don't have a more current and available version.

I'm a little surprised that in the absence of a constant flow of Nintendo games to play, you all haven't ramped-up the volume on retroactives, besides what seems like a recent uptick.  I suppose that might cut into the novelty of it though.

So much this.
When I had more time, I didn't have the money. Now I have (a little) more money and way less time. This adage applies to more than just gaming  :D

Your ratio is pretty much correct.  Some of it is my own fault, since I decided to have two kids 2 years apart, and they're both at such a young age where I can pretty much get nothing done while they're still awake, so chores need to largely be done after they're in bed, further paring away what little free time I have.
