Episode 480: Measuring Kirby's Schwarzschild Radius

With an event horizon at 20 centimeters, Kirby's mass would have to be many times that of the Earth. But gravitational distortions don't get to ride a mech.

E3 starts this week, and Radio Free Nintendo will be there (in spirit) to give you all the info about Unnamed Zelda Project you can handle, from four people who won't be playing it. But this week, we have a mostly normal show to get through, starting with New Business. Jon spent another week in the jaws of the San Jose Sharks, so a light crew has reports on only the newest of games. Greg kicks it off with Kirby: Planet Robobot. Kirby's second 3DS adventure adds the thing that universally makes all games better: mecha. Although his impressions are based on early gameplay, Greg is on-board. Gui has the freshest of racing games in Konami Krazy Racers for the GBA. It's the second appearance of this game in New Business; just imagine if famed fitness club company Konami had ever focused on making games! He also has a report on the hottest new tech from the 1995 Winter CES, getting a Sony CRT off Freecycle. Heads up, for those of you not old (or in Jon's case young) enough to remember, CRTs are heavy.  James has baseball fever, and the only cure is to try to watch a game of baseball. Knowing better than to do that, he instead opted to go play NEO GEO classic Baseball Stars 2 (now with video). After a round of New Business, we offer some light speculation on the E3 to come.

Following a break, it's time for the return of Listener Mail. Topics covered include "good" video game marketing, the fate of the Nintendo World Championships, Mother 3 at E3, and the future of Super Mario Maker DLC. You can ask us to name the next place Nintendo won't announce Mother 3 via our mailbag.

AFAIK Kirby has a diameter of 30cm so 20cm radius would make him invisible...

The CRT talk was interesting. I have a Sony 21" Trinitron from about 2004. (BM21M10). It is pretty good, my SNES (PAL) look pretty nice on it. Wii looks good too, but it doesnt have component input, so its not amazing.
My sister bought it new and was nice enough to give it to me a few months ago.

I was cringing so bad during the crt talk.

Why would anyone ever connect a GameCube or ps2 to it!!!!

Especially since the GameCube looks great on an HD tv using component cables. In fact it looks sharper by far than a Wii. Very good image quality. Hooking it up to a crt tv is a waste.

Also fr is garbage. But what you getting gui is playing the game with absolutely zero input lag. The way the games were meant to be played. Even game mode doesn't eliminate this issue on modern tvs. I rather play super Mario bros on a shitty rf connection than 480p on Wii because it played right and controls perfect.

But yeah you should toss that old tv and get a crt tv that supports s cable/composite.  Then buy an s cable specifically for the snes and n64 and those games look super nice. Make sure it's not an s cable that supports multiple systems because those are a sham. They are really composite connections not real s cable quality. Also the nes make sure it's composite if you have the old ones that support it. It looks pretty nice and much much much better than the rf connection.

Again I stress that the cry true benefit is the zero lag. James being a mega man fan you should appreciate the super lag free experience of a megaman game on a crt tv vesus laggy sluggish hdtvs. Many might think I'm over blowing this and those are either too young to remember or it's been so long you've forgotten.

Donkey Kong Country is a gorgeous looking game on the snes connected to a crt with s cable. Just beautiful.

I have my gamecube connected to my HDTV and I agree that it looks good enough. But I dont have component cables because they are crazy expensive.

They are expensive. I was lucky enough to get some in the early 00s. But if you have them the GameCube outputs a really sharp great image. Better than the Wii by far. I remember wins waker on he GameCube connected to my Sony wega using component cables looked borderline HD back then.

@kobeskillz - Haha, sorry if I made you hyperventilate.


I don't have a Cube anymore, just a Wii, hacked. With emulators, it's basically my main classic game machine, and it's likely I'll be playing Lufia 2 on it despite owning the cartridge, since composite is still better than RF.


But yeah, I'll also be playing Cube and some Wii games on it. I don't mind the lack of progressive scan: it's actually how I experienced all my games back in the day. I've never owned a 480p CRT TV and never had inputs more modern than composite, so. I'm used to it.


And yes, lack of lag is a big deal for me. Games like Mega Man haven't felt quite right on the two HDTVs I've owned.


It also makes sense to hook up the PS2 to that TV, as the alternative so far had been leaving it in a rubbermaid bin. And I've got stuff like the Mega Man X Collection for it, so…

I also really enjoyed Gui's CRT story, probably because it sounds like something I would do! I also got my CRT through Freecycle, several years ago - from the description I was expecting an enormous 4:3 set but it turned out to be an early 2000s flat/widescreen, which suited me just fine. Hauling that beast down two floors, getting it in the car and then up another four floors was memorable alright. You just never know what you're going to get with these things! As for cables, I recently upgraded all my consoles recently from composite to RGB SCART, it makes a pretty big difference but you won't miss something you've never had, so Gui, if you're happy with what you have, great. RF though... ouch :P It's way too easy to become obsessive over picture quality - you think you're fine and then suddenly you're considering getting one of those ridiculous PVM/BVM monitors.
