Episode 476: Why Is This in Audio Form?
« on: May 15, 2016, 07:23:47 AM »

Ten years on, Radio Free Nintendo has never answered our very first listener question.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/42713/episode-476-why-is-this-in-audio-form

It's been ten years since the date of our first podcast recording. Although we aren't really inclined to make a big deal about this anniversary, we start the show with an amusing look at what podcasting was in 2006. For a big blowout, stay tuned for Episode 500.

New Business starts with James tapping into his Summer of 2 Hot 4 Games emergency rations a bit early, with the 2006-appropriate Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2. Can six overly-enthusiastic cheerleaders counter the death of the Sun? Only if you believe. Meanwile, Guillaume has discovered that he has a crippling gambling addiction. He starts with his newest obsession, card game/horse racing hybrid Pocket Card Jockey. Greg and James seem more interested in naming his horses for him. He then has thoughts on Pinball Arcade, now available on Wii U, and once again James and Greg seem more interested in naming pinball tables. Greg has our second import DS title of the week, with Ganbare Goemon: TÅkai DÅchÅ« ÅŒedo Tengu ri Kaeshi no Maki. Before Konami betrayed us all, and after Konami realized their mistake in trying to make a "serious" Goemon game, we received this final entry in the series. It's a fitting eulogy for a hero, executed by his tyrannical lord.

After a break, it's time for Listener Mail! Topics covered include using games to cure insomnia, publishing on NX in 2017, Nintendo's Big Three, and retirement. You can ask us to quit via our inbox.

We are two weeks out from our RetroActive on Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. It's not too late to get involved! Get started playing now, and post your thoughts in the talkback thread.

Thanks to Connor for our new album art!

Absolutely love the new logo, a fitting way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of RFN.

Oh Aidyn Chronicles, I've never played it but watching James play it for 400, oh boy. The art style and all of the art in general was so utterly disgusting it actually made me feel a little ill, the same could be said about the music. For the duration of the stream I saw literally no redeeming qualities that would ascend it from complete garbage.

Saleswise I'd say Nintendo's big three are Pokemon, Mario & Super Smash Bros, Animal Crossing as a close 4th. Happy Home Designer has sold 3 million copies, 3 MILLION!

Good show.

The big three single-player franchises of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid never made the impression of matching up to Nintendo's actual best sellers (which are typically multiplayer games). With any luck, Splatoon will be an exciting third to Nintendo's Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. series.

As for when and how we will know the true nature of the NX, my heart screams for Spaceworld, but a big Nintendo Direct seems more likely. I wonder if Nintendo plans to have a public hands-on for the NX this year. GamesCom feels to close to E3, and Nintendo has shied away from Tokyo Game Show. Could PAX West be a possibility? It's NOA home turf and it would make a big media splash. It would also make the convention much more stressful for everyone involved.

If Sony's not going to push Paris Games Week again, I could see Nintendo using that for their European debut. But yeah, PAX West/Prime is about the time I'm expecting whatever unveiling they'll use.

Now that the "Summer of 2 hot for Games" is back, might we also see a return of the New Business Preview? Watching a grown man suffer through Pokemon Channel is its own kind of fun, but even the non-trolly stuff like Unchartered Waters: New Horizons was a good watch.

You will. This was a bit of The Summer of Two Hot for Games preview, and I can't capture 3/DS so there wasn't a lot I could do here anyway. I'd guess they'll really get rolling post-E3. I have 5 in hand right now, I figure 3 more and I'm golden.

At least two are handheld though, so I wont be able to do the preview.

[Cue Barry Manilow's "Looks Like We Made It"]

Seriously, it's been a pleasure listening.  I haven't been here since 06, but I've enjoyed the episodes produced from 09 on when I started.  It's also been great getting to interact with the staff on Twitter, creating that certain personal investment with that thing I put on when driving, doing chores or walking.

Regarding "The Big 3," I genuinely believe Nintendo's E3 2002 conference indirectly gave birth to that term.  They used the term "Game Giants" to describe their lineup, but 3D Mario, Zelda and Metroid all had a new game being shown off.  The press ran with that and started reporting those as "The Big 3."  When the Wii launched with a game in each series, it was assumed that said qualification didn't change, but we're all too aware that Metroid didn't get as much support then as during that Prime Trilogy period.  If Nintendo had ever ran with that mindset, it clearly didn't persist past one generation.

in a strange way, Goemon has lived on in video games as a cameo. sort-of. mainly because he lives on through the extensive list of Ganbare Goemon Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards! I THINK in one of the 5D's games on the DS, Goemon even was a selectable Duel spirit opponent who had a ninja deck that incorperated all the Sasuke Samurai variants, Yae, Ebisumaru, and himself. while thre are cards based on a couple of ideas from the series like the point scrolls (introduction to Galliantry) and Yae's mermaid form (Ninjutsu art of Transformation), I sadly don't think they ever got a card for Impact as far as I know.

St one point I had a collection of all the cards that featured Konami game references in them (there's a SHITTON of Gradius cards) in their respective highest obtainable rarity, but i had a friend who I think probably nicked all my ares that I wasn't incorperating into decks at the time. I know he wanted to use my Goemon cards for his Ninja deck since there were a bunch of cards that got released that had a bunch of support for cards with "NINJA" in the name and as it turns out, Ebisumaru and Sasuke's cards are actually pretty decent for that deck.

Some of the stuff they choose to cardify is pretty random in all honesty. early on, there was a few Getsufu-Maden cards, but it took them until like.. 2014 to release a generic Belmont card.

Also, there's a Nanobreaker card.

Fucking NANOBREAKER
