RFN New Business Preview: Uncharted Waters: New Horizons
« on: August 15, 2015, 11:42:05 AM »

James set sail for adventure, as defined by Koei of the early 90s.

Sure, James could play normal games for his role on Radio Free Nintendo. However, in protest of Nintendo of America's desire to release quite literally nothing this summer, James has resorted to probing the more "unique" games available on Nintendo systems. This week he's exploring Koei's 1994 Super Nintendo title, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons. Less obtuse than Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire, New Horizons lets the player captain a ship during the Age of Exploration. At sea you can make your life as a pirate, a merchant, a treasure hunter, or an explorer.

Check out the video below where James shows off life as a cartographer in the 1500s, before taking up the pirate's cutlass.

For more about this game, Splatoon, Never Alone, Nintendo's Quality of Life plans, the NX, and Nintendo PR check out RFN Episode 440, due out this Sunday.

James you should open up new business to not only be about what game the other co-hosts are playing. If Greg wants to talk about the new Super mario maker instead of a game that could work. Maybe Jon wants to tell the story how he camped out for the retro amiibo 3 pack. That way it keeps thing fresh and new. You can even rename it " Whats new Pussy cat" and use the voice sample from Tom Jones

all I'm going to say is that I'll be disappointed when the episode doesn't open with a reenactment of 103's opening.

My second favorite SNES game, I played the living heck out of it.  Ernst was my boy, and as I recall to win as Ernst you have to map every possible square it is possible to map and then take the girl to new south China city that appears.  Either way it is both infuriating and hilarious watching a newbie play a game at which you're an expert.  Also infuriating as a geography expert, you were in the White and then Kara Sea, not the North Sea, it was the Hanseatic League, and you were off Hokkaido not Honshu, bah.

Although James did one thing on his first try at a disadvantage that I was almost never able to do even with the advantage, win a duel.  I knew what the letters meant and how they applied to swords and armor but never figured out what the numbers meant.  I lost duels over and over, one of the reasons I never let my flagship get close to the enemy flagship (the ship with the ! not the 1).

I really like this new feature!

Ever consider an extra camera? I would have loved to see your reaction at 26:30, when a storm instantly sunk your ship and put you back to the title screen with no warning.

Extended Silence...F$%& you Koei! Hahaha

I actually had a few successful duels. Dunno, that strategy seemed to work a few times.

Picked up my woefully early save from Ernst and just worked through it. New ship, smart investments, life was much easier. Completed his path. Took a lot of hours. Ultimately a very fun game but I don't think I'm going to go back and do another path right now. At a later date though I'm open to it.
