Staff Sez: NFP Figures
« on: May 19, 2014, 06:05:53 PM »

This week the staff discusses possible NFP figures.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/37453/staff-sez-nfp-figures

It's been a while since the last Staff Sez, but we're back! With the announcement of the new NFP figures coming out I thought I'd collect some thoughts from the staff. My question was "What are your most and least wanted Nintendo NFP figures?" Check out their answers! What are your most and least wanted figures? Let us know in the comments!

Zach "19.95" Miller

Well, let's assume that this NFC technology will be used, somehow, for Smash Bros. And let's pretend that the inevitable Skylander-like toys come in two varieties: fighters from the game and actual Assist Trophies. With all that being said, I have two answers:Fighter: Zero Suit Samus.Assist Trophy: Bass & Treble (Mega Man series)

Andy "Exclusively at Toys R Us" Goergen

I'm just not that interested in collecting figurines, but if there were a set of Link figures depicting all of his various incarnations, I'd like to get those.

Andrew "Special Event" Brown

Being the collector that I am, I'm going to eat this up regardless of how they come into play. I hope Nintendo opens the flood gates for second and third parties to submit their own figurines to use in the core NFP service. Ergo; Most wanted: A limited Shantae figure that unlocks special costumes, abilities or bonuses exclusive to the Wii U version of Half-Genie Hero. Least wanted: Five different-colored Toad or Yoshi variants that require individual purchases in order to get all their unique in-game features. It would be cool if these things allow you to place a specific character in a game not specific to his/her series. Imagine playing the next Zelda game as Mario or Donkey Kong, or even Bowser, just for kicks!

Clay "Two Character Pack" Johnson

Most wanted: A series of figures modeled after the actual sprites or character models of characters from classic games, perhaps sold in packs themed around the evolution of the characters' in-game appearances. For instance, show how things progressed from the green, yellow, and red Mario of Super Mario Bros. to the blocky polygonal look of Super Mario 64 to the perfectly realized cartoony model of Super Mario 3D World. Bonus if Super NES era link has pink hair.Least wanted: Stanley the Bugman.

Aaron "Extra Content" Brown

Give me a Star Fox figure and we'll be talking.

Bryan "Gotta Collect Them All!" Rose

Most wanted: An Earthbound figure would be really cool. Not that there's a chance, but still. Maybe a more realistic one would be something from Punch Out.Least wanted: Urban Champion figures. Though, maybe one with the plant pot would be cool.

Danny "Giant NFP Figures" Bivens

I'm hoping that we'll eventually see some really obscure characters. I'm not even talking about things necessarily have their own games either. Like the Famicom Disk System mascot, Disk-kun (Disk Boy/Mr. Disk). I'm with Andrew on the Toad and Yoshi variants. That is something that doesn't need to happen but probably will.

Addison "Skylanders Infinity" Webb

My Most wanted would be a R.O.B. figure.  It would be a nice tribute to the original crazy Nintendo Peripheral.  Or maybe a virtual boy that unlocks the virtual boy 3ds VC.My least wanted NFP Figure would be Roselina or Baby Roselina.

My most wanted figurine is none of them. It's a way to monetize content that I might otherwise get for much less, or to divide up content that I might otherwise buy all together. I view collectible figurines as overpriced DLC and will hold them to the same, if not greater scrutiny as a consumer and commentator. Merchandising itself is totally fine (though not something I would spend money on) but tying merchandise into games that may otherwise want to play is purely a negative UNLESS Nintendo finds ways to actually enhance games with these toys in a way that just isn't possible without them. Doing so will require different kinds of toys and different game design concepts than we've seen with Skylanders, Disney Infinity, or Pokemon Rumble. I can easily ignore those series because the games themselves don't interest me. If Nintendo starts gating content in a game like Smash Bros. behind these figurines, many of us fans who are in it for video game content will be extremely put off.

The notion that fighters in Smash Bros. should be featured as NFC figures is appalling, but extremely lucrative.
