The recent trailer for Mario Kart 7 seemed to tie the motion controls to the first-person view mode. Can anybody clarify whether or not you can use the Circle Pad in first person?

You can use both simultaneously (but you can't do Circle Pad by itself).

The series in general is casual, and on purpose. I liked the Wii version, and the game looks very good from all the previews I have seen.

I picked this up today. The first thing I did was check GameFaqs and find out how to unlock Daisy. Then, I spent the next hour or so cursing at Mushroom Cup 150CC for being annoying. Yes, that's how long it took. I finally unlocked Daisy and now, I'm going through the game normally. I went back to Mushroom Cup 50CC with Daisy on Birthday Girl and annihilated that.

It's standard Mario Kart. The gliding mechanic had the potential to really change the game but it doesn't. It's fun to use but so far, it's underutilized. Unfortunately. And driving underwater adds nothing to the game except some neat-o locations.

There were moments in 150CC where I wanted to drop kick a small child out of anger. You get bombarded by items from all directions. They should just change the title to Item Kart. The game relies so heavily on the items to "balance" the game that it makes the game less fun. Nintendo really hasn't gotten that right since Mario Kart 64 and even then it wasn't right; just the best it was. In that game, there was a learning curve and the game didn't punish you for being good. If you got hit with an item, you could usually recover. In MK7, I already had an instance where I was hit with a blue shell, then a lightning bolt, then a fireball within like 5 seconds. This happened when I was trying to unlock Daisy.

The sad part is that I'm now used to this in Mario Kart. It's no longer the exception. It's just what happens when you play 150CC. I remember how appalled I was back when I played Mario Kart: Double Dash when I got hit with a blue shell, then a red shell, then Bowser ran over me with a star, all within the span of a few seconds. When I mentioned this on message boards, I was told that that never happened to them and it was a fluke. Except it did happen. A lot. Not that string of events specifically but the act of getting hit one after another until winning the race was no longer a possibility. I could only limp to the finish line, dragging what was left of my kart behind me. And it makes Mario Kart worse. The AI is awful. Always has been but instead of just miraculously coming out of no where even if you hit them with the lightning bolt right before they were about to cross a jump, the AI miraculously comes back with a bevy of items with which to **** your day up with. How is that fun?

I feel like I say the same things when a new Mario Kart comes out. It can be fun, but it's often needlessly frustrating. I like the random elements. I like how hectic the races can be. But, sometimes (usually) it's too much. I'd still like to see Nintendo step back and re-evaluate the series. The AI needs to be fixed. Getting blitzkrieg'd by items until it's a close races again or you're losing badly is not only poor/lazy programming and design, but it's the opposite of fun.

Picked up my copy today from Best Buy after having Walmart and Kmart drop the ball by not even having the game on the shelf and not being able to put it up until someone higher up came in (Kmart) and not being able to find it (Walmart) when I got there early this morning. Ugh. Hate that. That's the 2nd or 3rd time I've had issues with Kmart after trying to take advantage of the $15 off coupons. I have until Dec 31st to take advantage of the coupon I have and I'm done with them. I'll stick with Best Buy and Amazon going forward.

Had a chance to play a few cups and do a few online matches. I need to practice the starting boost. Without it I lose every time. Until I can get that under control I might stick to the battle modes for online play. Going through 50cc to get handle the control and to learn the tracks. It's far to slow but I need the practice I think. The game looks great. Playing in 3D. The game has the same FPS no matter if it's 2D or 3D right?

I added the NWR community channel. Hope to see others in game at some point.

I've been playing this since yesterday and I've unlocked more kart parts than characters which doesn't really make any difference to me except that's what I want. The game itself is great, but the 3D isn't used or emphasized as one would think or hope. The items are cool, but the inclusion of the tanooki tail is just a pitiful waste. I think the most improved item is Blooper because the ink covers a larger portion of the screen. I really like the fire flower as well. The gliding isn't used as much and I wish you could use it whenever you want, but you can't and it comes off as a forced inclusion and the underwater could have been much better, but it isn't used as much. While underwater you can jump higher and glide farther or hop onto a ledge you wouldn't normally be able to reach. I miss being able to look behind and see other characters. I'm so used to being abused in 150cc that it doesn't even phase me, it just makes me want to get faster and develop a better strategy so when it happens I won't lose as much.
The online experience in Mario Kart is the definition of Nintendo's online design and it's really great and only falls flat in that Street Fighter for 3DS allows random fights during local player, but Mario Kart does not. I took it online for a bit last night and thought it was more complex than I was expecting because of the new Communities, but the message system is flat so it's improved, but still sort of stale. As was mentioned on NWR Connectivity it would have been cool to have more controls over what items were included. I think that making communities will be the answer to excluding hackers and cheaters and will be able to preserve the fun.
Finally I want to mention that the gyro controls are weird. On one end you can move your 3DS around and control the kart, but if you play with the 3D on you will lose your vision and it destroys your control. I tried to play with the 3D off, but the controls are so out of range that I wonder why it was even included. My favorite feature is that if you get hit with an item or knocked out or spin out on the track you can still keep your item even if you have it out.
All in all it's not a terrible game and I really feel happy having it because I know I will play it a lot, but I also feel that Nintendo could have done bigger things with it.

I was just telling my girlfriend this morning the whole K-Mart deal is getting to be more trouble than it's worth. $15 or $20 off of a game is huge but not when you can't depend on them. I bought Super Mario 3D Land and got the $15 off coupon. I planned to use that on Zelda, and pick up the $20 coupon with Zelda. When I went the morning Zelda released, I was told they only received 2 copies and had already sold them. So I missed out there. Then today, I called before I even went and the worker (who was either new or just dumb) told me they didn't have it and to check back tomorrow as he didn't know when it might arrive. I then called another Kmart a little further away and was able to get it there. Shouldn't have to be this hard. And now I have another $15 coupon to unload.

I have small hands and I find myself getting a little cramped playing the game, particularly holding an item behind me. Otherwise, I'm having fun with the game. Only 150CC has been unfairly difficult. I got hit with a blue shell right before the finish line in one race in Mushroom Cup 100CC and got 2nd place. 100CC isn't much harder than 50CC.

I really like the track design in this game. It lacks the really annoying curvy sections from the DS and Wii games. I like curves on my women, not my Mario Kart tracks.

I'm disappointed in the Rainbow Road Music remix in this game. Honestly, it's only been really good in Mario Kart 64.

I'm still finishing 50cc (haven't lost a race or a lap yet), but I've gotten hit by as many as 4 or 5 blue shells in a single race. Especially on the Special Cup last night. But I was sooooo far ahead of the computer it was understandable.

Damn, just finished the leaf cup.

just before the end of the race and all in about 3-4 seconds.
red shell, inked, blue shelled, lightning bolt.

Luckily I was so far ahead it didn't really matter as I crossed the finish line in 1st place 5 seconds later anyway.

edit: Just finished 50cc

I really hate the blue shells.

also the game cheats among computer placement too.

I had a race where peach was in 2nd and bowser was in 3rd. I was in 1st and threw a shell behind me which hit Peach letting bowser pass her up with a nice little space inbetween them. I crossed the finish line right after that. Peach got 2nd place even though she was clearly in 3rd on the map.

I like and hate that red shells are basically impossible to dodge and really follow the crap out of you. I've been knocked out of the air by a trailing red shell plenty of times because I didn't expect it.

I've been trying to get 3 stars in 150cc and trying out different kart variations for the best results.
I can't wait to race everyone tomorrow night!

150cc is pretty vile, but I don't think it's as bad as Mario Kart Wii and honestly I got over it and do pretty good in most races. I do hope that Nintendo fixes any glitches like the one Chiramii mentioned in the future though I'm not sure if they have plans to be proactive in the fairness of community racing.

Personally, I want Blue Shells to be like the Nintendo 64 games....not flying and on the ground, to hit anyone in the middle of the course...and a smaller explosion would be acceptable to try to catch 2nd and 3rd place racers as well...that actually can make being hit ore fair.

Red Shells, I always thought should be slightly slower than a karts top speed, so that you can barely out run them...then if you make any slight mistake in the race, you get hit.

I wish Nintendo would focus on items being equally defensive as offensive...I know there are some uses, but nothing as great as Mario Kart 64...where almost any item could be used defensively...

And honestly...some of the silly weapons need to be gotten rid off....oh and bring back the Ghost...I loved the ghost.

Why is it that I can be way ahead of someone and currently in the middle of hang gliding, yet i can get hit with a red shell, but if I launch a red shell at someone who takes a minor jump, my red shell takes a nosedive down the hole?

Only the computer get flying red shells? Cause that's bullshit. there shouldn't be any flying redshells unless they have wings.
