Tetris DS
« on: February 15, 2006, 11:42:32 AM »
IGN and Gamespot have got some movies up, and it comes out in like a month, so it's high time for a thread.  There's not too much to talk about yet, but who cares.

A few observations:
- Metroid Mode looks cool, it appears as if you control the block of Tetrinos around the bottom screen as you scroll up collecting more pieces.  Once you get a solid block (4x5 squares in the video) something...happens.  In the video all the blocks in the group turned grey but it cut out before anythign else happened.
- In Balloon trip mode there's a tall tower of tetrinos (it extends far above the top screen, beyond sight)  and you use the touch screen to push and rotate the bottom blocks to clear lines, thus lowering the tower.  At the top is a box of balloons, so I guess you're goal is to get them down.
-Zelda mode appears to be like a mission mode, with goals like "clear three lines at once" and "clear two lines with a [shape]"
- Donkey Kong mode has a block of tetrinos in the middle, with additional blocks coming from both the top and bottom.  It appears to be a contest against another player (or AI, I would assume) where you try to screw up the other person while trying to clear all you blocks from your side.  I think.
- Yoshi mode....uhh, something happens here!  I see cookies and stuff!  Yoshi's on the bottom screen with baker-mario FRANCHISE WHORE on the top.  Judiging by the tube that sends cookies to the bottom screen, I guess you're trying to feed yoshi....?  On the top screen there are some blocks (!!), and the bottom screen gives you the choice of a few different shapes and rotations.  Choose one and it drops down on the screen.  Clear lines, get more cookies.  It's weird though, it doesn't look as if you choose where you put the block on the top screen (although in that particular picture is was obvious...)
- Mario Mode = regular tetris, except freaking awesome.  Shadows appear to show where the falling block will land, which was a little annoying, but still!  Looks awesome!

- All musics seems to be remixes from their respective games.  Lots of simple, repetitive, grating beeps and boops.  Awesome.
- SPIINNING MARIO SPRITE, LOOKS AWESOME
- I love the style of the mario scenes on the top screen of regular mode, realistic backgrounds with sprites taken straight from the games looks awesome.  I want the New SMB to look like that, not stupid old polygons ;____;
- I want this game.
- If I were to live on a deserted island and only bring one game, I would so bring this.

Plus it has internets, discuss.

tetrinos?

This is what I've always called the indivual tetris blocks...I thought that was the official name, but I just googled it and found nothing

So if they aren't called tetrinos, well, they are now >=U

No, I could have SWORN a name similar to "tetrinos" is the official name...I WILL FIND IT!

Edit: Well I found it fairly fast!  From Nintendo's site itself...

Both names are actually correct. The reason for the Tetriminos name, however, is because the game was based on Pentomino (which features the exact same shapes).

At first I was like, "Tetris?  Why would I want another Tetris?"  But now I'm thinking of giving my old GB Tetris to my sister (she has my GBC) and buying this to replace it.  It looks very cool.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Tetris has been made and remade on just about every platform.

I'd guess that Nintendo's Tetris on the original Game Boy is probably the most successful one.

With Tetris DS, they're really trying to push the idea that it's best as a Nintendo handheld game, with all this oldschool Tetris stuff to cement that idea in your head.  And you know, it just might work.  At the very least, it's plenty cool.

You mean the one that was....packed into every system....the one that was free?

Your kidding right?  How many times do I hear complaints when someone slams a block down only to realize they were actually off by one column (the eyesight, it deceives!)  Besides, if I had to guess, I'd guess that this was an option that can be turned on/off.

It better have the classic theme ("Theme A")....  or... or... heads will roll...

Other things I've noted from some previous screen shots.

Hold Area: Save that straight piece for later!

Items:  Only saw it in multiplayer shots.  Likely a way to muck with the other player.  They show a boo, which if I had to guess - steals the hold item of a different player.  Perhaps the items you get corresponds to how many and how efficient your clearing lines.

Next Pieces: Possibly see more than just the very next piece.

You could look at it as, the game cost money, the Game Boy was free.  I think Tetris sold the Game Boy as much as, or even more, than the Game Boy sold Tetris.

Oh, hay.  Bump.

I'm pretty disappointed with this game.  I never did and still don't care about all the modes besides "standard," but for some reason it seems off.  It's not as responsive as I want it to be, I guess.  It's weird.  Whatever's wrong with it, I still like playing GB Tetris the most.

Hopefully multiplayer will win.

Edit: Oh hey, these game ruining options like ghost pieces, hard down, and infinite spin actually make the game more fun, Tetris DS is awesome again.

This game is amazing. Push Mode is incredibly addictive, even against the cpu. I can't remember the last time a game has made me yell so many obscenities and pound my desk in frustration... but with me actually having fun doing it and enjoying coming back for more.

And yeah, ghost pieces, hold, and hard down are great additions. They seem to complement the old Tetris formula without taking away from the clasic feel due to the pace of the game (after 150 lines in Marathon Mode, one couldn't imagine playing without them)... but then again, hard down has screwed me over many a time. Itchy trigger finger. I really don't pay attention to anything after the second "next" box though...

The retro action on the top screen is also very cool. The farther you get in marathon mode the more games are displayed on the top... but on the flipside, the farther you are, the faster and more frantic the action on the bottom, so you really can't enjoy what's going on, heh; it's a cool distraction nonetheless.... a distracting distraction...

Anyhow, the game's a blast. Anyone remotely interested in puzzle games should pick it up.

wait....there wasn't a hard down for the gameboy version of Tetris? In the original version, that's ALL there was.

Also, I need this game.

There were some pretty big problems with online connection errors the very first day, and I experienced some of them. Otherwise, I find the "Start/Join Game" option for friends is pretty good, and random matching is faster than MKDS, for some reason (launch frenzy perhaps). I think holding down on the control pad makes the items move too slowly, but hard drop makes up for it. I learned to love Hold and Ghost in The New Tetris (N64). Items might just be a novelty in four player. It seems, though, when playing with strangers that everyone is game for sticking it out and playing multiple matches, something I rarely experienced with Mario Kart (probably due to the mandatory four course tourney). If it weren't for a connection problem, I could've probably played with one random match-er for hours.
