DS downloadable content at E3
« on: May 12, 2005, 10:51:54 AM »
Trust me on this one, it's coming.  I'm sure PGC will update with the news soon enough.  but I'd figure I'd start the discussion now.

Nintendo DS Service Provides an Easy, Seamless Transition to Wireless Wi-Fi Gaming

REDMOND, Wash., May 10, 2005 – Nintendo is partnering with IGN Entertainment to create an innovative network for portable video games that is not only expansive but also extremely easy for everyone to use. Set to debut later this year, the wireless service for Nintendo DS will use IGN’s GameSpy Technology to let people around the world link easily and wirelessly to play games, just as if they were playing face-to-face.

"With minimum setup procedures, Nintendo DS owners will be able to enjoy Wi-Fi gaming just as easily as if they were playing with their friends in the same room," explains Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. "To realize this simple and seamless transition to Wi-Fi gaming, we’re partnering with one of the leaders in the multiplayer gaming world. Accessing the service will require no added Nintendo subscription charges, whether users hook up using a home broadband Wi-Fi connection or access a Wi-Fi hotspot at a coffee shop, library or elsewhere. It doesn’t get any easier than that."

The service will be used by a variety of upcoming games, including the previously announced Animal Crossing DS. Other titles will be revealed in the coming weeks. When using the service, DS owners can choose whether they would like to play with friends or strangers, whether nearby or on the other side of the world.

The service represents the first foray by IGN’s GameSpy into portable games.

"We’re excited to bring the technology that powers more than 300 PC and console video games to Nintendo’s innovative wireless platform. Now developers can easily and confidently add advanced matchmaking, community and other multiplayer services to their Nintendo DS games," says Mark Stieglitz, general manager of IGN Entertainment’s GameSpy Technology Group. "We’re honored that Nintendo is choosing IGN’s GameSpy as their middleware partner, and look forward to a very long relationship."

That's a really good idea to shorten lineups.  One of the problems with E3 is there are a few demos for each game and hundreds of people wanting to play it at the same time.  With this if the person has a DS they don't have to wait in line forever.  They also don't have to feel rushed so a journalist can take their time with the demo and give more accurate impressions.

Fantastic idea.

Provide a large, comfortable (hopefully) area for people to chill, play multiplayer DS games, download NEW multiplayer DS games and video footage...that will make your booth a fondly remembered one.

Guys, Im thinking folks will be settling down and demo-playing 8 player Mario Kart...and Metroid Prime Hunters: Full...and thats just the obvious stuff.
Damn, as a DS fan now I REALLY wish I could go.

Well too damn bad!  I'm gonna knock them over to play a demo they are in the middle of anyway!

So think you might actually try to keep a particularly cool demo on your DS? Feeding it power at all times to preserve the precious data... =p

What would have been really awesome is if, from ANYWHERE on the floor folks could pull out their DS (or PSP) and download from a roster of pre-prepared demos and videos. Then, when you're inevitably waiting in some line anywhere else in the hall, you could amuse yourself and STILL be working...Mario kart GP, right there in line~
Don't think they could provide a signal strong enough for that tho.

by Craig Harris

May 16, 2005 - Last week, Nintendo revealed that it will be hosting a Nintendo DS area at the Electronic Entertainment Expo where attendees will be able to download a choice selection of demo versions of Nintendo DS software. We were able to sneak a peek at the list as printed on Nintendo's booth wall during its construction:

Polarium (E3 demo)
Meteos(E3 demo)
Table Hockey(E3 demo)
Submarine (E3 demo)
Electroplankton (E3 demo)
Zelda Preview Trailer

Don't forget your DS if your going to E3

Why are they demoing Polarium?  It's already in stores.  I guess the demos are more to keep people entertained than to cut down on demo lineups.  I doubt Table Hockey and Submarine are going to be released games for example.  That's pretty neat but it's a wasted opportunity if that's all it is.

I think they will wow people with the Zelda material and actually get people to play Electroplankton, the rest of the stuff is just for variety.  And I agree with you they could have provided some more compelling stuff.  They should have demoed every DS game available at the show! give DS owners the advantage of not having to wait in line for anything DS related.

Oh boy... Submarine Demo, Table Hockey, Zelda Trailer, Zelda Gallery, and ElectroPlankton? This will be a good E3.

Also- since Nintendo included EP, do you think it could be coming to America? We can only hope...

I think they're showing off Elektroplankton to see how people react to it and determine whether a launch is worth it.
