The Magic Box

Page three shows and Aircraft Carrier and a Stealth bomber

There also seems to be a couple of new CO's in the game as well

Looks like they ditched the miss named Crusier for an nuclear aircraft carrier for air support. They should have called the Crusier a destroyer.

Anyone want to recreat desert storm 2? Desert tile sets.

I am slightly miffed they are still using the same sprites from AW 1 though. Although it does look cleaner. I am also suprised that they haven't used both screen to show battles between units.

Man what doesn't that stealth fighter attack?

But since I can't really say how far they have expnded on the gameplay, I will just have to wait and see.

Yeah cruisers were closer to destroyers in the past, but my guess is that they're not being replaced by the carrier.  If you look, carriers cannot fire on other navel units.  My hope is that it takes over the original cruisers capability to hold aircraft and at the same time replenishes their ammo and fuel (likely only if you load them onto the carrier).

One of my gripes with AW in the past is how only land based APC could replenish supplies.

Well that and that fog of war had absolutely no bearing on the computer.  Man I hope they fix that, although I can image it would be hard to do.

Also, my guess is that the B-2 type bomber is the equivalent of the neo-tanks -- combine fighter and bomber.  However I imagine that it may not be that strong against other aircraft (just a better than nothing that you get with a regular bomber, but hey it'll cost you more to make)

That isn't a B2 Sprit Stealth Bomber. Its a F-117 Stealth Fighter, although in reality, it is incapable of dog fighting since it has no Air to Air ability.

Now days Crusiers most are floating anti-air shields. Frigates punish subs. Destroyers are outer picket ships where corvetts once stood.

Although in the Russian Navy, cursiers are an odd breed. Some of them are mini fixed wing carriers, although more like over sized heli pads now even then they are heavy armed. Others are giant missile boats.

Yeah it was a pain in the ass how you could replenish at sea. I hope they get rid of the damaging wave type CO powers. They are overpowered no matter how you tweak it since until you repair the unts they are effectively hindicaped. Breaks most of the momentum you might have and cost godly sums of money to fix.

F117 can't dogfight? Then replace it with an F22 or JSF, those have AA capabilities.

I thought cruisers were launch platforms for long range missiles these days and against subs you use other subs?

They are fine. Except for the new view of the area on the bottom screen... it's at a bit of an angle, and looks a bit weird, is there a reason for this?

Those graphics are just plain lazy. There is no excuse not to have a lot better sprites. LAZY LAZY LAZY.

It has nothing to do with graphics whores. It has to do with lazy developers. No game should sacrifice gameplay for graphics, but that doesn't mean graphics are unimportant.

Unlike you, Bill, I'm a good game whore. In other words I want the best game and don't spin tired old insult fanboy lines to make excuses when an aspect of the game is sup-bar. I call a spade a spade.

Could you please tell me what's wrong with the graphical quality of this game? It looks FINE, and I don't want unnecessary crap cluttering the screen just to please a few graphic whores trying to sound superior.

Definitely more color in those graphics, and it even looks like parts of it is using some 3D elements.  Even then, these are screenshots and usually they don't do these games any justice either.  Heck, I have seen better looking shots than these.

I'd like to see 'em use a different style for this game, remember, Super Conflict (I THINK that was the SNES iteration of the Famicom Wars series because it had exactly the same gameplay) was based on the cold war, i.e. US vs. Soviet troops. Why not make AWDS realistic again?

Meh, to me its a small negative, the game is waaaayyyy too good for me to really care.  See this is what concerns me, people being so concerned with looks instead of quality, it seems to me that the industry talks a good talk on gameplay qualityand innovation, but at the end of the day is more concerned with looks and graphics.

Wanted to add to my two points.  The cruiser in the past games could replenish fuel and ammo of chopper based units only (that were loaded).  It's easy to envision the carrier doing the same for jets/bombers.

Second, I take my point back about the new bomber being weak against other air units.  I suddenly remembered AW strength of weapon representation.  The circle means that weapon is strong against a particular type... while a triangle signifies a weaker relationship.  So with that in mind the new bomber really is a beast against everything... as it currently stands.

Well the new plane might be a dual fighter/bomber.

One of these days people will realize the top rated games almost always have both. Even on Gamecube.  Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil, Smash Bros., Soul Calibur II, Price of Persia, Viewtiful Joe...

Agreed, but the graphics are alwys secondary to the gameplay and innovation.

I'm not saying that we should go back to the days of Space Invader graphics, but I feel that a game should be judged on its gaulity gameplay and the new Ideas it brings to the table first, rather than the level of graphics, AW is good because of its solid gameplay not because of its graphics, as long as the gameplay continues to be as strong I don't really care if the graphics imporves or not.

The issue isn't bad graphics. It's just unimaginative. The DS is a new system and they couldn't even design new sprites? I'm not saying the game will suck, this is just very lazy design.

The American Navy has thier missiles spread through out their ship classes. There is few ship that can't launch the Tomahawk or Harpoon. As a fleet US does have more missiles, but Russians do have much larger more powerful warheads. If it does hit, it will sink you.

The US only has one true missile boat. The USS Iowa battleship. Although never kepted active during peacetime, it is maintaned in a highly servicable condition. That thing can carry enough missiles to sink enitire fleets by itself.

Anyway, I believe Artimus nailed my sentiments on the head. I was expecting more than GBA+. Yes the graphics is fine, but I know they can do better. Back on the GBA it was above average. This is close to sub par for what the DS can do.

I have no doubt that the gameplay will be sweet. The Wars series has not disapointed me in that department yet. I just hope they arn't riding on thier own coat tails on this. It is not out of thier reach to creat a great or perfect game from a good game with no doubt it would be.

i don't know if anyone else noticed but the new Nintendo Power reveals some info about gameplay.  Not entirely sure if people know about this but here goes.........

In Advance Wars DS there will be a tag team of COs, this allows for combo CO powers.  Using the powers as a combo can add more damage or other special stuff (not entirely sure what they mean here).  Basically imagine using Sniper Power up and then Max Power, first power would damage an army of enemies quite badly and then Max Power would run the whole army over.

Nintendo Power also has a pic a giant tank, it is a single tank that takes up most of the screen which makes it nearly 2-3 times the size of the other tanks, i wonder how freaking powerful that thing is and how the development team is going to balance out everthing in order to keep battles fair and fun especially for multiplayer matches.
