Interesting POV there...if indeed he is concerned over his Smash Bros baby tho, even more cause to be onboard =)
However, if he wanted to create new franchises and explore new concepts Im a bit surprised Nintendo wouldn't allow him such freedom...they are surely aware that the company could make use of some compelling new IP.
Then again, perhaps they did offer such concessions, but Mr. Sakurai was already set on broadening his creative freedom by leaving the company...incidentally I hear a new Kirby game is in the works for the GC. ... I don't see what the GC really brings to the table for that series however (assuming the game is a new action/platformer).

Don't be on the fence for Meteos.  If you are at all interested, get it.  Import it if you aren't patient (like me).

Things to clarify/add:

- The game's "currency" is however many elemental blocks (not rocket or garbage blocks) you can clear off the top of the screen.  There are 6 regular block types and 2 super-rare ones, and different combinations of them will unlock different planets, the music for those planets, and battle items seperately.  You can also use a chunk of regular blocks to buy the super-rare ones if you need them to get another planet.

-  The planets vary in a bunch of factors, including well width (anything from 6 to 12 blocks wide), gravity, initial launch speed, secondary launch speed, horizontal/vertical launch strengths, block variety, block shape, and of course music.  The neat thing about multiplayer is that you can choose whatever planet you want (at least versus the CPU, I haven't done multi yet), and the different factors on different planets still make for a balanced fight.  For instance, someone on a planet that has a wide play area can send over twice as many blocks to someone with a narrow playing field, but the one on the narrow field planet with low gravity and good launch power can send them back just as fast.

- The menus are a spittin' image of Super Smash Bros menus.  Same style and fonts and such.  You can drag around all the menus to your liking, or you can move them into each other and watch the chaos unfold.  It's funny to try and select single player mode only to have it move at the last minute and hit delete all data instead, lol.

"However, if he wanted to create new franchises and explore new concepts Im a bit surprised Nintendo wouldn't allow him such freedom...they are surely aware that the company could make use of some compelling new IP."

Five years ago I would have considered Nintendo to be an ideal company for someone wanting to try new things but lately they've been, well, sequel whores.  They made Rare attach a franchise to Dinosaur Planet so I can see where a developer would feel pressure from Nintendo to make sequels.  They might not even be blatantly telling their devs to make sequels but when every other dev is working on a Mario game and Nintendo is promoting their franchises as their big selling point one's going to feel pressure.

Plus I understand why Sakurai would potentially not want to make another Smash Bros game.  SSBM is damn near perfect.  Aside from online support there's practically no need for another sequel.  From a creative standpoint there's really no where else to go so they might as well quit the series while they're ahead and work on something new.  But SSB has selling power and like most publishers Nintendo probably isn't going to agree to end a series because the creator thinks they nailed it.  There's not going to be a point where Sakurai can say "that's it.  This is the last Smash Bros game." and Nintendo's going to be cool with it.

Over my dead body... Smash Bros needs to stay confined to just Nintendo characters IMO, it's not like there aren't enough characters one can still add from Nintendo's games either (Advance Wars comes to mind).

I kind of agree with Ian Sane, SSB:M was pretty much perfect. I'm proud of Nintendo for not releasing another this generation, inspite of the game's success. With that being said though, Nintendo's next console needs one. I loved SSB:M so much, that I would likely buy a new game in the series if all it had to tout was more characters, levels, and better graphics. An improved Adventure Mode wouldn't hurt either.

Agreed.
Having that game online itself neccesitates some sort of sequel, even if it was otherwise the same game. Of course, while they are at adding that kind of functionality, they might as well add in the new characters, stages, modes, etc.

No no no Ian, you got it all wrong.  Sakurai WANTED to make another Smash Bros game, I think that was pretty clear from his comments when leaving.  He said how he was sure Kirby would have a bright future, but said he was unsure of Smash Bros. future.

Nintendo likely didn't want to make another Smash Bros. game becuase the original fit the niche just fine.  For everyone's lamenting over Nintendo's sequelitis (and rightly so), I cannot think of any old Nintendo series with more than one incarnation currently on the GameCube except Metroid Prime, which is pretty much a new series anyway.

Heh, well it was quite cool.  Windy beat the crap out of me, but I was able to connect to several people on the show floor while waiting in lines.  The DS really stole the show with Picto Chat and single card multiplayer.  People everywhere (including the Final Fantasy concert Monday) had their DS's out, and I only saw a handful of PSPs.

Geezus, Im getting Puyo Pop to tie me over (and because the game apparently rocks in its own right) but Meteos can't get here soon enough.
Great to hear about folks actually bringing their DS out with them...the DS download idea at the show was a fabulous one.

As far as I know, yes, it is on track for release this month.  However, being the federal-law violator that I am (turn off all electronic devices while the aircraft takes off and lands my ass), I never turned my DS off after downloading the Meteos demo at E3.  I still have it on there.

Multiplayer: I played versus a friend of mine, an asian kid who goes to CalTech, I got owned every time, except I think once.  Its a ton of fun.  The E3 demo supported 1v1 play so long as both people had a copy of the meteos demo.  However, when I was looking at it, it looked like there was room for 4 people to join a game on the multiplayer screen.  I really dont know if that was just my impression or if it really does support more than 1v1 multiplayer.

The multiplayer works kind of like tetris does I suppose.  When you clear out X number of blocks, it drops a lesser amount of them ( I'm guessing its lesser, but by what degree I dont know) onto the oponents screen.  Those blocks stay gray and unusuable for, I dunno, 20 seconds or so which is a good amount of time for a fast paced game like this one.

When people start buying the game, my only advice is to get as much of the screen, starting at the bottom, into the air as possible and then creating rockets off of that elevated platform, or even better, launching the whole screen up and clearing it all at the same time.

This game is a ton of fun, and I for one will be picking it up on launch day.  Heck, I might even pre-order it just to make sure that I get it.

You might jam the landing guidance systems causing the plane to crash.

You just can't have as much fun with other people with PSPs.  It sounds funny, but what PSPs do (play games, movies, MP3s) is pretty vanilla when it comes right down to it.  It does all of that stuff well, but it's nothing really original.  It's kinda like a GBA on steriods.  But get a bunch of your buddies in a room, each one with a DS?  That's a good time right there.

KDR, I don't know what you know about planes, but if you could use a DS to cause a plane to crash, I think that we would have seen it done by now.  Also, if you read the news, you'll know that even the ban on cell phones is under review by the FAA because they've been finding that cell phones don't do a darn thing against plane communications, navigation or anything else.  Hell, have you ever been on a plane with phones installed in the seats, they're all electronic and send out signals, do you think that they're turned off during take off and landing? Nope.  Oh, and while I'm not an expert in these matters, my father is a private pilot who owns his own plane, and these are his words, not mine.

Anyway, enough of that little rant.

I completely agree Silks.  When I went to E3, me and one of my friends had a DS and another friend had a PSP.  The friend w/ the PSP rarely turned his on, and when he did it was to play single player games.  However, the DS provided literally hours of enjoyment while we were in lines, or at the download station.

As far as meteos specifically goes, does anyone have any information about if it is just 2 player, or if it supports more than 2 players?  I've read a bit about it in addition to playing the demo, and I really can't recall what the multiplayer features are in the full game.

And so I shall. No lie, I have used my DS mostly as a glorified GBA (not complaining...the GBA gaming Ive been doing on it itself has been glorious) but I feel like finally Meteos will be the first game I truly exalt my DS for. It makes me a bit antsy too tho, and I'm seriously pondering going for a screen protector now.
Y'know...coulda sworn Nintendo would have official screen protectors available for purchase by now, but I haven't seen them in stores...I definitely don't trust those Pelican dealies -__-

From the little bit of Meteos I played I liked it quite a lot. I will be picking it up for sure. I just don't think I'm going to like it as much as Lumines. Lumines is the kind of game I can turn on and lose a couple hours in just playing one round of it. Meteos, from what everybody tells me, is over in like 5 minutes. The whole thing seems like more of a time trial experience. I know there is a specific "time trial" mode, but if the whole game basically gets too heavy to handle in 5 minutes during regular play, that kinda irks me. I want to challenge myself for high scores, but I don't really want the game to shut me down. The only thing that should end the game is my lack of skill.

Hahah, well said.
Its funny you mention longevity, because (and I know that Striker didnt mean it in this context) Meteos is purportedly loaded with content and replayability...indeed though, I have heard it is more conducive to fast action rounds. But if you are having fun, time will fly by regardless if a single match is 5 min or 50 right?
