Khushrenada:
Looked up NWR's review history for the GBC and found that they did reviews for 19 of the 31 games released. That leaves 12 unaccounted for. Unlike the GB games, NWR was pretty much positive about every GBC that was reviewed except one which is Legend of the River King. There were no middling reviews. Clearly the addition of color makes a huge difference in a game's quality.  8) And, for whatever reason, Pokemon Trading Card Game and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe had two reviews about them so both of those are linked to those games. I also linked the Toki Tori 3D review along with the VC mini since they seem to be the same thing but with 3D added. As Mop it up mentioned, there are many versions of Toki Tori out there so it may help to see what has been said about the other versions to decide which a person would most like. Finally, it seems, according to NWR, that Nintendo saved the best for last in the 3DS VC releases with the last game released for the service, which is Pokemon Crystal, getting a 10 out of 10 perfect score.

The magazine I read at the time were head-over-heels for Mario Tennis. I've never played this version because games were expensive and I was saving pennies for licensed garbage and stuff like Battleship instead, but every few issues they'd bring up Mario Tennis somewhere as the gold standard for portable sports stuff.

Hahaha. We got a Game Boy Color hater this time around. Someone was bold enough to say all these games suck. It does seem like there is less discussion for these titles compared to the Game Boy games so maybe they do?

I know I don’t have much to say in this thread. For myself, I bought 4 of these games. All three Zeldas and Wario Land 2. I've only played Link's Awakening DX and I do recommend it. Will have to see how the new remake/remaster compares. Meant to play through the other Zelda games but always ended up playing some other Zelda games or just other games instead. I'd always heard about people going on positively about the Wario Land series and they always sounded like something that would be my jam. The first game I tried getting into was actually Wario Land 4. Yet, despite making a bit of headway, the game has always come across as rather obtuse to me and I’ve never been able to stick with it. I’m pretty sure I’ve checked the manual about controls and gameplay but, when playing it, I just feel like I’m missing some info. Something is just off about it.

When the Wario Land games started coming out on VC, I got the first of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and then got Wario Land 2. When Wario Land 3 was released, I thought I better start playing these before buying another one. So, I booted up the first one and played through a couple levels. It was mentioned that the game can feel a bit slow in the Game Boy threads and I’d say that agrees with my memory of it. There’s was nothing that grabbed me right away or compelled me to keep playing after that initial dive in. Plus, I was still trying to figure out the controls and what certain things did. I was going to check into the manual about it but never did. With my Wario Land 4 experience and then this uninteresting start to the first game, (on top of not really caring for Metroid 2, SML2 and DK94) I just didn’t bother pursuing this series further and just sort of gave up on older handheld games as something that didn’t seem to be for me.

With the recent re-examination and willingness to give these games a second chance, I’ve found titles that I’ve quite enjoyed. So, the original Wario Land is a game I want to get back to and play through now. The prevailing opinion does seem to be that 2 and 3 are the best of the series (along with Shake It for Wii). So, I’ll probably add Wario Land 3 and hope it does turn out positive.

One game I never gave any thought to and didn’t really know anything about was Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. I actually thought it was some variation of the original Mario Bros. pipe arcade game. I guess I should have clued in with the Super in front of the name but just took that as it being the most definitive deluxe edition the game could be. Now, another port of SMB doesn’t interest me especially since I’ve already got the NES original as part of the Ambassador game selection. However, the addition of challenge mode where you explore the levels for red coins and Yoshi eggs does interest me as a new way to play the game. So, I’d say I’m curious about this game.
