There should be a way to tell the noobies from the oldies
« on: August 19, 2003, 09:38:35 PM »
Well, at least I think so. No I'm not talking about posting peoples post counts either. I understand why that can be a bad thing. However I think it would be nice if under the posters avater it had a thing that said:   Joined: *put the date the person joined the boards here*. This would be a nice efficient and accurate way of knowing how long someones been here. The main reason why I thought of this was because I was surprised to find out in the thread "Who are the people from the Original Planet GameCube Boards that are still here today?" that a lot of the posters who I thought had been around for a long time were actually quite new and some that I thought were new had been around for a while.
Hey, kid! I’m a computer! Stop all the downloadin’! Help computer!

The only problem with that is that when you know when someone joined, you treat them different.  Everybody does, and that's what I want to avoid.  Your own post proves that you judged people by the quality of their posts, rather than the date they joined, and that's EXACTLY what we're looking for.

I agree with Rick.  He said pretty much everything that I wanted to say, so I have nothing to add.  I do wish that post counts were displayed nonetheless, as I consider it to be sort of like a "score", but I realize that they cause more problems than anything, and they should be disabled.

The only way I could see being able to distinguish new people from old people is post count, and believe me, when everyone's post count is displayed, it becomes an all out race to see who can get the most the fastest. Look at IGN if you don't believe me.

you only want the post counts on cause you have the most (followed perhaps by me?) either way i dont mind, juding people on the quality of their posts is the best ofcourse, we are on a nintendo forums, lets follow their mantra of quality not quantity!

allthough... i spose it could be held for a trial basis, and if the amount of spam shoots through the roof, then obviously get rid of them, if everything stays the same keep it? (hrmm when did PGC become a democracy?)

Well it was kind of a race on the old boards too.  I know how many posts I have made and that fine with me.  I think this will be my 539th.  Kinda low, but the site has been slow.

If this was the old mouse_clicker, you would've been left in the dust looooooong ago. I got my first thousand posts at IGN in less than 4 weeks. I'm at about 1,800 on these boards so far.

I don't think there would really be much harm in having the "date joined" available in the "view users profile" thingy. I don't think people look in those very often anyways, or people already would be fighting for a bigger "score".

We don't seem to have a problem with people being judged that particular way, so why not make another detail available? Just for those who are interested enough to look.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

I once posted over 5000 posts in a day.    Mind you that was in a specific place, and it was basically just a spamming contest.  We didn't outright multiple post or anything, but our posts were all one line pieces of garbage that didn't really serve any point.

On the last forum I was a regular at, I had over 7000 when I left after a year.  Upon my exit, I requested my post count cut to zero though.

Whoa. . . Grey Ninja, you lack a life Nah, don't worry, I do to.

I'm around 1,200 here.  But I too would not mind if the posts stayed hidden (even though I just posted mine ).  Having a date joined accessible, though, either in the profile or under the avatar, isn't unreasonable.  It couldn't cause any sort of spam, though it could alter opinions.  Well, whatever.  Me do not mind either way, true?

I really don't post all that much, atleast compared to everyone else in this thread. I agree with rick though, quality over content.

I still think it would be a good idea to award a poster of the month just to set a good example for some of the newer guys, but hey, it is pretty obvious who the guys who know their stuff around here.

IGN had a one-post-a-minute rule, though, like they do here. Although one mod, Will_the_Thrill did post 10,000 times in 10 minutes. I have no idea how he did it, but he did.

At IGN right now I'm closing in on 9,000 posts, but I haven't posted regularly there since they locked the boards last February. The only reason I'm able to post now, besides on the free boards, is because a guy I know there got a friend of his to buy me Insider for a year. Should be running out soon, though.

Personally I think it's a lot better not to see people's post counts. At a lot of other forums I visit people are judged way too much by their post counts rather than what they have to say. I don't think it's a problem to see when someone joined the forum though, but it's really up to the admins of any particular forum if they want to enable that feature. Either way is fine with me.

I made the list?  Well look at me, moving on up!

I'm on another message board, and under your name, they put a little phrase based on a certain song of this particular artist.  The newbies start off with something real obscure, and the real old time posters get a phrase with the hugest song or album made by that artist.  This way, you never know how many posts, and some of the newbies get some real cool phrases, so theres no contest or bashing.

Example:
                The_Omen
         Yellow caped Mario

               Mouse-clicker
               Zora suit Link

                 ThePerm
Varia suit Samus( sorry, i know samus is a she, but the character is what i'm going for)

                  Newbie
                Bob-bomb

And this can go with any characters in all the Nintendo games, so you'll virtually have thousands of choices.  Maybe if the mods set their own parameters for when you reach a new level, then we wont know what it takes to move up.
Come on people, with some fine tuning, it can work!

"If a man comes to the door of poetry untouched by the madness of the muses, believing that technique alone will make him a great poet, he and his sane compositions never reach perfection, but are utterly eclipsed by the inspired madman." Socrates

I think we should have experience bars under are name, and level.

For posts, your experience goes up, and eventually your level.

Like they do in giveupalready.com/ that sort of idea.

Well someone does! *looks at PIACs irregular title*
And a reward system like experience still has the ability to be abused.
What about a voting system, where people choose others (cannot vote for themselves) like the PGC Awards idea, and moderators select five or so and everyone who wants to can *cough*POLL*cough* and the top one or two gets to change their title.
It could be weekly, monthly, whatever. But I haven't seen it mentioned yet so I thought it could be useful!

At this point I don't really care anymore.  I can tell just fine who is a smart poster and who needs to think more just by looking at their posts.  Takes a tad longer, but I have been to too many other forums (the overclockers.com forum imparticular) where the guys with the higher post counts intentionally don't post the answer to a solution so they can come back later and give the answer in other posts.  Just makes a bunch of spam.

Well what about the 5 star rating system that www.mariokartdoubledash.co.uk had . I think that would be great for people with less posts but intelligent things to say .

If you do decide to follow this , how about the person adds a comment on why he rated the certain person a 1 star . If its something like "you suck" then report it . I would explain better but im tired.

Anyway what do you guys think .

Not a chance...There would be people who would try and lower the scores of others...

I still say it should all be based on how long you've been a registered user, not the number of posts you've made or on the opinions of other users...

That would not work cause people will begin to spam threads for extra posts . I say my idea is best , what Bill said is true but what if , when you rate someone you send it through to the mods or something with a reason why that person deserves 5 stars or what he did to get 1 stars.

There will be no rewards for post counts whatsoever.
Well are there any ideas or plans for rewards at all or is all this just a waste of typing and bandwidth?

Not to turn away the ideas, but it seems PGC has gone quiet on this issue.

I think I have one of the lowest post counts of non moderators.  I am sure I am lower than practically everyone who has been around for more than 3 months.  I mean honestly, I had this count in 2 months at the ezboard forums...

I honestly think post counts should never be factored as proof of anything.  I really don't even think rankings matter.  I mean when I go through the forums, I will either say, oh great, lets just skip him, or god why cant he die? but if you respect that persons posts, you recognize their name.  If a noob lacks common sense and can't decide who is posting what is basically good information, then they wont last long without getting banned.  It's a sad fact but it's true.  Just let nature work its magic.

I'm not fond of rankings at all, either, but I think custom titles would be great if we could get them.  Only problem is that the titles are the only way to recognize that an admin or staff member is talking.  But don't matter none to me; I'm more than happy with these forums as they are.
