What an awful shame, and so sudden too.

--- Quote from: Evan_B on February 09, 2016, 01:34:52 AM ---You know, I was never really a Game Trailers person. I looked at their coverage several times over the year but I can't really say I've ever listened to their media analysis. However, I know how prolific the site is and it's certainly sad to see them go.

I'm the same as you. It reminds of me of when The Dissolve shut down last year. That was a movie site but another place with excellent content that didn't go the click-bait route. It's a shame when good sites can't get the funds needed to stay operating.

I didn't use GameTrailers regularly, but did enjoy some of the content they put out and would occasionally binge watch a bunch of their videos. I guess it's hard to compete with that crazy morass called YouTube.

Best of luck to those from the site as they transition to new opportunities!

I think the media market as a whole has become too fragmented to be profitable. I work for a small weekly newspaper and we make more profit, at least percentage, than our daily competitor. Now that doesn't mean we make more money than they do but at the end of the day we keep more of the money we make than they do. We aren't entirely autonomous though, we own two other weekly papers and a bi-monthly magazine. Personally I think the media business worked better before when we had fewer, more centralized players than when everything fragmented into smaller segments catering to niche markets.

I kind of see this site, NWR, as equal to the small weekly that serves a smaller area but also has lower costs and targets their market effectively thus remaining profitable and sites like IGN, GT, etc, are more like the big dailies that are all consolidating and cutting corners just to stay alive. Maybe IGN is a metro and GT was the daily I don't know the analogy is starting to fall a part but I think that smaller niche websites work better when they focus on being good at one or two things instead of trying to be too much.

I completely forgot about 1up, so I didn't even know they went out of business.
