Yes, after all this time and 61 games, I'm still enamoured with the Animal Crossing theme. However, unlike the other 2 times this theme has come up, I've finally played an Animal Crossing game and so now I'm even more enthused about using it. It just works so well.

The Misadventures of Shangri-La

Prologue


I was travelling the rails in search of a new destination after my life fell apart. I hadn't left my house in 9 months because day to day existence had got it's gentle grip on me and was suffocating my soul. When I finally decided to face the world again, I found it had gone to hell. There were weeds everywhere, flies and cochroaches infesting everything and all the cool neighbors and friends I had known had moved, replaced with some weird freaks that I wanted no business with.

 


Fish-Duck here still haunts my mind.

Clearly, it was time to make a change in life. Maybe if I started over in a new spot, I'd find the zest for life I used to have when I was friends with all my neighbors and a contributing member of the community. And that is why I hopped on the rails in search of a new destination that sounded right for me. Unfortunately, I was soon accosted by some creepy cat trying to find out all kinds of personal and private information about me.


If one of the first things you have to say to somebody is that you are not crazy, it is because you are.
 
Since I did mind him sitting with me, I immediately got off at the first stop which was some place called Shangri-La. No sooner do I exit the train station when I'm suddenly confronted by a group of people welcoming me to the town. I checked myself over to make sure I wasn't carrying any drugs in case that was causing all these animals to be attracted to me where ever I went but I was surprisingly clean on that front. Maybe I had already used them because one of the animals from the welcoming committee started telling everyone I was the new mayor and I was taken straight away to City Hall to begin my reign. Now, normally, I might have objected but, as it turns out, my being mayor of the town has always been the host's role in this game so the whole thing kind of works out great storywise.

Despite things seeming to be pretty rosy at first, I soon found out Shangri-La was pretty troubled. First, I found out that the whole real estate market was cornered by one Tom Nook and he was dictating where houses could and couldn't be built and charging whatever he wanted for home sales and renovations. Then when I went shopping, I discovered that a couple of his relatives Timmy and Tommy had basically taken control of the sale of nearly all merchandise for the city and all citizens were at the mercy of whatever they chose to stock and had to buy it at whatever price they chose to sell.

I wasn't going to stand for an iron grip on the marketplace so I went to find the local sheriff to see about busting up this cartel. That's when I discovered there was no police station in town. Apparently, it's something that has to be requested by the citizens and then money has to be raised to build it and hire a detective. Thus, I gathered the citizens and explained the situation to them. It wasn't easy. They wanted me to pick fruit for them and deliver packages for them and fish for them but I finally was able to win them over and agree to get a police station started.

It felt so good. Once again, I had a purpose in life beyond just picking weeds and buying a new piece of clothing. I was going to help these people to cast off the oppresive economic sanctions being levelled against them by the corrupt Nook empire and lead them to a better life of freedom with plenty of bells for all. Of course, things can look great in theory but when applied to the real world, well, then you can encounter some bumps along the way as I was about to discover........

Yeah, as of right now, we only have 9 players. So, I'm going to extend the deadline for another week and I think I'm going to spam other user's pm boxes with invites as well to see if I can't stir up more action for this game. I don't think we've ever played a game below double digits for players.

Thanks for letting me talk you into doing it as well Fatty and Shorty. This is awesome. I'm getting pumped about this game now. With so many people, I can now start adding in a few more roles. Sorry Toruresu. But I would like to point out, that I have hosted plenty of simple games as well. I know I am known for more complicated stuff but I've done all manner a few times.

I've added the roles. I'm not going to make this game anymore complicated than what Bill had back in the day when the game was still in its infancy. Tell me if you think it is getting too complicated.

My goal is to try and get this game to 30 players. Will it happen? It seems unlikely with the amount of people that have told me they are too busy but I'm still pounding the pavement to see what I can drum up. Right now, 25 looks to be possible but we'll see what happens by the time Sunday roles around.

In an effort to encourage more participation, here are the roles that will be added with more players joining.

With 20 players - The Tom Nook Mafia gets another member

With 22 players - The townie roles of Mable and Sable are added. They are both townies who know each others role. If one of them dies, the other player dies with them but that player can take one other player with them. It's the brother and sister role for you veterans.

With 27 players - The Crazy Redd mafia will be added and this will be a 2 mafia game! Fox mafia will have the same powers as the Nook mafia.

With 28 players - The Blanca role will be added. She can steal the face of a single person at any point in the game (overnight), killing the original owner of the role in the process. If Blanca ends up wishing to kill someone who is being targetted by Death or Mafia, Blanca will reach the victim first. If Blanca kills Cube, she will die. Blanca must steal a face to join a group and get a win. If she is still unaffiliated by the time a group meets their victory condition, she loses.

With 29 players - The Blathers role is added. Blathers is awake all night and can see all night actions. He can prevent 2 night actions of his choosing over the course of the game.

With 30 players - The Bomber's Apprentice role is added and there could actually be bomber team for once. Cube and the Bomber's Apprentice will know who each other are and if they can eliminate and blow up all other players, they will win.

I've got more roles if we get past 30 but I think the 30 player mark is enough right now.

Yep haven't checked in for a while, but glad to have got in on the game under the wire.  Maybe I'll live past the first day for the first time in a while, though I'll try to be annoying as hell since I've looked up the character I chose as my avatar.  Should be fun as long as there's no "STINKIN' CHEATERS!!!"

What? No has signed up in the past few hours? Terrible. For the record, the last time we had 23 players was oddly under 2 years ago with the Maxi/Insanolord NWR Radio Mafia. However, the last time we had 24 players was April 2009(!!) in GoldenPhoenix's Punchout Mafia. If we can get two more players, we'll have finally gotten back to a level of participation not seen in over 5 years.

Ha ha. Well, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You and like 8 others have expressed being busy so who knows what the participation level is still going to be like despite the turnout. Quick question(s).  What side is the Tortimer role on/ what is the win condition?  Last man standing, Mafia win, or does he/she count as a townie while the mafia is active?

Tortimer is the killer role. He is on his own side and has a last man standing win condition. He must eliminate all townies and mafia and other roles (like the bomber) to win. Cube the bomber has the same win conditions but he might possible get a partner if we get to 30.

I'll make everything very clear once I know what the final player count is and what the roles in this game will end up being.

We are living in a new mafia age.

I am speechless. I am so thankful for all who signed up including the original 9 who didn't require me to send out a pm to guilt them into playing. Ha ha! I just wanted to see a better turnout and was feeling nostalgic and can't believe it has happened.

I think we're going to have a lot of fun. I know a lot of you have expressed concerns about time constraints but the days in this game are long and it is just for fun so don't worry about putting on a show. Just do what you can and I'm sure the game will still be a blast.

Moreover, 30 doesn't have to be the cutoff point. If anyone else wants in, there's still an hour left. The highest we ever had for turnout was 34 so if 5 people out there want to set a new record, I'm not going to stop you. I better start getting things organized.

Nah. I never bothered to smite anyone. It was pointless. What I'll do instead is ensure that you die on day 1. I'll just make something up if I have to. That is much better and more effective as revenge than the karma system.

Well, it is an idea I am introducing at the last moment. 75% of the other players have yet to choose or create an avatar because of it. For all I know, this could be met with more resistance. So, you've got time but I am hoping it can be arranged.

You could always just save a copy of the avatar and then upload it to Photobucket or an image site like it to create a more permanent link to it. In any case, don't rush it until you are sure that it will work. If you do create a link to it in a photobucket account, I can test that link for my avatar and make sure it displays the ClexYoshi picture before you change anything on your end.
