Mediocrity-fest 2003: AKA Sequel mania OR E3 2003
(1/4) > >>
screamatorium:
From all the years I've gone to the E3, this one has probably been the most blah.  Alot of the games I've been looking forward to, either ended up being just ok, or utter crap.  Nothing really groundbreaking of mindblowing this year.

Mario kart:  Its mario kart.  Aside from that, I wasnt all to excited by the whole charachter riding in back thing.  I give them credit for trying something different, but for such a high profile franchise, I was hoping for a little bit more.  Still a nice game though.  Going to play it tomorrow to see if someone can control the guy in the back indipendently.

Mario & Luigi:  eh, I'm spending my money on final fantasy tactics.  Mario and luigi have crazy eyes that make them look like they just visited their eye doctor and got those drops that keep their eyes from dialating.  Either that or they are on crack, or are hypnotized.  Just a 10% reduction would make a world of difference.  Not particularly fun.

Star Fox fighting game:  I forget the title... but this game surprised me.  Pretty fun.

XIII:  Dissapointing.  I'm actually a proponent of cel shading, but the way the game handles it turned me off.  At times I felt like I was playing one of those crappy earthink animated commercials.  total loss of depth perception.  And the comic book like screams and yells was pretty lame.

MgsTwin Snakes:  eh.  If you liked mgs for ps1, then you'll like this one.  If you hated it on the ps1... well depending on how much of a fanboy you are.... you'll still hate it.  The graphics and other stuff isnt enough of an improvment to move from hate to like.

Rogue leader:  basically what I expected.  nice game... but nothing mind blowing.  The ground combat isnt the most well designed thing in the world... thank god they still have the flying parts.  For one thing, whenever you enter a room.... for whatever reason the camera is pointed at you so all you can see is yourself and a wall.   You have to run about five steps into a room/hallway until the camera finally swings around and lets you see where you are going.  Frankly, I didnt find the land parts to be very fun.  The game crashed a bunch of times... but so did the first game at e3 2001 and cube club.  Not a problem... just annoying.  The thing I"m most looking forward to is playing th co-op mode.  Dog fighting is basically the starfox dogfighing mode all over again.  lots of turning.  I really wish they could have put the n64 levels in as well, so I could finally finish that damn escape from fest level with a gold medal!

Soul calibur:  oh man, cube owners will definitly get the best version of the game.  Link is a really great addition.  I was expecting them to just give link sophitias moves with a few cusom ones and be done with it.  But Link is probably one of the better charachters in the game.  Plenty of penache.  Makes the smash brothers Link look like a worthless peice of excrement.  The rest of the charachters look good too.  But its not that much of a leap from the dcast game.

1080:  bleh X 10

Pikmin:  As much as I like to play this game... I found myself getting sleepy playing it.  I played it with a friend of mine, and it just ended up being two people playing the one player game with one communal pool of pikmin.  I'm sure later their will be a team aspect.  I tried to stick with my freind, but you only ended up needing one charachter for the puzzles, so I had nothing to do.  So it just became a game about stealing pikmin for whatever seperate project we were working on the map.

MGS3:  What total crap.  If you havent seen the movie yet, check it out.  You will see what it looks like when a game designer totally looses perspective.  The gameplay parts look ok, but it looks like its going to be another bizarre story.  Their was incest in the first game... so who knows what turd nuggets kojima -san will drop on us this time.

Gran Turismo 4:  I have a hard time distinguishing this game from its predesessors.  Online play will be nice... but I dont have the modem.  Other than that it looks the same.

Halo 2:  Looked great.  One of the few highlights of the show.

Conkers crappy game:  Holy crap.  This game looks horrible.  looks like the n64 game in svideo mode.  I dare anyone to say that rare leaving was a bad thing.

Kameo:  I almost didnt see it.  I thought it was wallpaper and just walked by.

Castlevania:  Generic as you can get.  Who cares?  You could re-lable this game vampire ho-down, and I wouldn't notice.  The items are the only thing that seems to connect this game to the previous ones.  And on top of that, its just not that fun.

Spawn:  An ok game.  Probably the best spawn game ever... but that aint sayin much.  Still fun.

Final fantasy tactics:  My favorite game of all time ported to the gba?  Some one at nintendo has been reading my mind.  Good enough for me to overlook the mediocre graphics.

That thing where you can watch cartoons on the gba:  First of all, I guess Nintendo didnt hear you guys, when you were harping about how you wanted your GAME system for GAMES.  Almost looks like a real cartoon.... if you happed to have brain damage and can only process about 10 frames a second.  Its good if you want to keep your mentally disabled cousin busy for awhile.

FF Chrystal chronicals:  Ok.  Not really fun.  I tried it twice, and neither time was it fun.  The gba connections seems pretty useless.  yay, I have a map in my hand... oh buy wait, that means I cant use the greatest controller ever created, called the wavebird.  Maybe they'll think of something usefull in some other part of the game.  Their may have been something to do with the gba later, but I just stopped looking at it after awhile when I went to run around trying to find fun.

Gba controlling a car on a track:  They had this thing where you can control a little car on a track with the gba.  If this is what they're comming up with for the gba connectivity...  really, whats next?  Gba controlled toaster?  They just need to admit that they lied when they said that the gba connectivity was going to be significant.

FF X-2:  I'm just going to chalk this one up to me not understanding japanese society.  Why?  WHY?

Kentia Hall:  Usually the most fun part of the show... this year it was pretty blah.  Still lots of desperate company owners.  But they managed to fix most of their funny pamphlets.  The highlight being " street besketball".

The rest of the sequels:  New levels... new bad guys... maybe some new moves.  The end.  Nothing spectacular.  Just like the booth babes.  Just like the rest of the show.  Although the roast beef sandwich in the sportsbar was spectacular.

This show was inundated with ww2 war games.  I guess thats the hot thing right now.  Just about every publisher seemed to have one.

I know that you guys probably hate me for getting to go to e3, and then pissing all over it.  But thems the breaks.  Atleast for those who hate lots of stuff, they'll get an idea of what it was like.   Times to sleep, one more day of e3 to go, gots to wake up early!

Strell:
Hot damn.

I was going to sit down and write a post EXACTLY like this, but you did it prolly a hundred times better than I could.

I didn't go to the show or play the games, but it seemed like no company this year did anything worthwhile, and it seemed like massive dissapointment on all sides.  Nintendo is obviously pushing the GB/GC connection, but this is seriously what they are putting their time and effort and money into?  That looks BAD if you ask me, like they are worried about the GC's stability on the interior.  It's obvious they are trying to push the GB userbase into the GC realm, but throwing in some gimmicky games with SNES graphics that are essentially the same idea over and over?  Give me a break.  Where was Mario 128?  Game Zero?  All these "new franchises" and whatnot we've been hearing about?  Chalk it up to never beleiving another rumor.  I honestly can't beleive how E3 turned out.

I checked out the PS2 and Xbox lineups, and neither interested me.  MGS3 I can wait ton, Castlevania I have my GBA, Halo 2 I coudln't care less about.   THen there's PC.  Wow.  I'm glad I'm not the only person who has realized that the theme of "war" and "fps" is being done to DEATH right now.  Doom 3 might be pretty, but how good could the gameplay be?  Planetside, Half Life 2, Tribes 3...sigh, I'm really sick of FPS.  When Metroid Prime comes in and smashes all the other FPS games in terms of sheer gameplay, atmosphere, and level construction, you just don't care about the others anymore.  I might need a game of Counter Strike every 5-6 months, but this is ridiculous.

Is there even goign to be a Spaceworld this year?  There had better be, and there had better be a software lineup that kicks the CRAP out of E3's.

I initially had the chance to go to E3, but I'm glad I saved the money now (which I didn't have anyway, so I guess it really doesn't make a difference).  Nintendo Power, please don't put a picture of Link up in your magazine, write "MASSIVE SURPRISES" next to it when you're talking about Tetra's Trackers.  I was wrong about how Pokemon would turn out (sold WAYYYY more than I thought it would), but I can't foresee taking a gimmick like this and having a lot of response.

I'd go into this more, but what's the point?

No Virtua Fighter Story (or whatever its called).
None of those Sega games that were rumored (Clockwork Knight?  Hell, whatever happened to the Sega/Ninteno rpg from years ago?  Or Planet Harriers?)
Star Fox Armada no longer on Triforce?
No Game Zero.
No new franchises.
Sequels and more sequels.
Mediocre graphics.

I love Nintendo and all, and I'm looking forward to FZero and Mario Kart, but seriously, I thought LAST YEAR was a bit of a letdown, but this year claims the trophy, and about 42 others while it's at it.

almondblight:
Maybe everyones ran out of ideas?  I´ve just been following E3 online, but so far it seems like a joke.  Really, what were the big surprises (besides a Sony handheld that doesn´t exist yet)?

Cube:  Might have had a stronger showing if they didn´t release info on all the new games a couple weeks before E3.  Really, why did they steal their own thunder by announcing MGS, Mario Kart and Rebel Strike BEFORE the conference?  I´m pretty interested in these three games, but I know a lot of people would go nuts if they found out about them at the conference.  Anyone know why Nintendo shot itself in the foot?

PS2:  MGS3 and GT4.  Let´s hope they are better than MGS2 and GT3, which after playing for a couple minutes made me switch to the graphically inferior GT2, which is actually FUN to play.

X-Box:  I loved Conkers multiplayer(one of the few), but I question the attitude of the remake.  It´s supposed to have all the stuff Nintendo left out....riiiiiiiight.  If anyone ever played the original, the only thing they did was bleep out the worst words and not show full nudity.  If that´s what they call "uncut"....
And I admit the Halo movie looked nice, but I´m still waiting to see if Bungie can break their tradition of graphicially superior, gameplay inferior sequals.  I haven´t been too impressed with their track record, Oni and Halo were both over-promised, delayed, and under-delivered.

On the plus side, some of the games I´ve been looking forward to for a while (SC:Ghost, Viewtiful Joe, etc) seem to be shaping up nicely, as expected.  The only thing that is not a dissapointment about this years E3 is that I get more information on games like that.
Keepa:
I'm mostly with you guys on this. I didn't go to E3 either, but I have so far been very unimpressed.

Xbox:

Nothing from the Xbox impressed me. However, I'm not an first person fan (Metroid Prime is the only exception) and I tend to not like PC games, so the Xbox is really bogus in my opinion. Rare is also a big disappointment.

Playstation 2:

I thought MGS 3 and Gran Turismo 4 looked awesome. This MGS game is exactly what I wanted, so far at least. I love all of the new gameplay elements that are being brought to the table. The 12 minute trailer was not the best. But I think at next year's E3 Kojima will pull out the big cinematic trailer. I thought the leaked trailer was much more impressive. I played through all the races on GT3 and GT4 looks to improve on almost every front. I'm also interested in Jak II and the new Ratchet & Clank games. Also SOCOM II should be nice. The PSP deal was interesting, I suppose.

Nintendo:

I didn't really care what Xbox brought to the table. I kind of figured not a lot would interest my gaming tastes. So no let down there. Sony basically did what I expected, all be it lackluster overall. But Nintendo so far has really been the most disappointing and it's strange too because they have the most games I'm interested in. The problem is: 1) They told us all of their titles before hand. 2.) The GBA --> GC Connectivity feature is absolutely killing me. It is agonizing. 3.) They didn't bring any show stoppers with them. 4.) Half or more of the games I was interested in before E3 started, have either made me more nervous or completely not want them all together after seeing either a.) The trailers, b.) the countless hands-on impressions I've seen, or c.) both a and b.

In the end though, it is all about the games on your wish list. And so far, after viewing countless videos and going through a ton of hands-on impressions, I have weeded out a lot of games. This is the list of games (that were at the show) I really have my eye on and have a good chance of adding to my collection.

GameCube:

F-Zero GX
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Metroid Prime 2
Sonic Heroes
Soul Caliber II
Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Viewtiful Joe

Playstation 2:

Gran Turismo 4
Jak II
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Ratchet: Going Commando
SOCOM 2

GBA:

Metroid: Zero Mission
Super Mario Advance 4

As you can see, there are quite a few games that I am interested in. There are also a few others that I'll watch carefully, but so far are not doing it for me.
boggy b:
The first post is utter bulls***. PS2 and XBox had one of their best shows ever. Stop trying to drag them down because Ninty had an awful show and you don't want to feel they were the only ones.

And GCN owners are by far not getting the best version of SC2...Link is justa lamo with cheap-a** moves. Not that either of the other bonus characters are any better.

There are countless other bulls** points in your post... MGS3 is what you get when a gamedesigner has PERFECT vision of where his game is going, and MGS2 DID NOT HAVE INCEST. For God's sakes, if you're not going to play a game don't open your mouth to spout some BS that you have no clue about.

GT4 is one of the high points of the show, and that's saying something considering XBox and PS2's line up. The graphics are top notch and the new physocs system makes the game better than ever. You're the only person that disagrees.
