Episode 105: Gun Show
« on: July 02, 2008, 06:16:32 PM »

Absence continues to make the heart grow fonder.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/16275/episode-105-gun-show

Muscular French "Chibiz" are the future!

With Jon Lindemann sitting in the host's chair for the jet-setting Jonathan Metts and the calamity of Episode 103 still fresh in everyone's memory, only someone with a title as sober-sounding as "Senior Editor" could be trusted to maintain the maturity of the show, and so Radio Trivia host Michael "TYP" Cole joins the rest of the usual crew for another extensive episode of RFN.

After a New Business segment that includes James making friends with Winnie the Pooh and the unthinkable combination of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and vocal communication, the discussion shifts to the news, including: Mega Man 9 for WiiWare, Castlevania's unanticipated foray into 3D fighting, and Ubisoft's continuing attempts to force James into anger management therapy.

In the final segment, the gang responds to a healthy dose of mail mostly directed at Jonny (naturally), running the gamut of listener concerns from Boom Blox's lacklustre sales to the very survival of the survival horror genre. So sit back, enjoy, and discover James' deep-seated fear of men's biceps.

I bought Nanostray 2 myself.  Its a decent shooter allright, however, two big complaints I have is its exceedingly hard, and the style couldn't be more generic if it tried.  Now that I have Invaders, I'll be selling this one away.

Thanks for the kind words all.  I did my best to keep things under control!  Hosting is definitely a different experience, since you have to keep track of what's going on and act like a referee of sorts (especially with James).  I can't just space out like I normally do.   ;D

My favorite part is when James indignantly says, "I don't know man, you're the host!" like I wasn't doing my job, when I was actually giving him the floor as part of my HOSTING DUTIES.

In any case, kudos to Lindy. It's not an easy gig being host, but he did very well.

I have to admit that I was a little miffed at the point at which you guys were talking about survival/horror games, Fallout 3 wasn't mentioned. Although, not coming out for the Wii, it is one of the big games to come out this year. And good job to John (sp?) for hosting for a change. I have to admit, I welcomed it. It was a nice change for once, I can't remember if he did before or not, but I liked his hosting abilities. It was also nice hearing TYP again on the podcast.

Not sure I'd call Condemned, or even Jericho survival horror, they are both action oriented games. Even the RE series is going in a more action oriented direction. Also aren't the Fallout games more RPGish?

You have a good point, what does differntiate survival horror from other genres? The whole survival horror genre (like many genres this generation) is having trouble evolving. That's where I give Alone in the dark credit. It's at least trying to add new things and evolve the genre rather than morph it into the action shooter genre.

Survival Horror has one key aspect, survival. It is a genre built on providing you with limited resources while horrific things are going on around you. Now it can definitely evolve but games like Condemned are quite focused on the action side of things, not much survival. Haven't played Alone in the Dark yet though so I cannot comment on that. Even the RE series is stepping away from its roots, which is too bad in many ways (And I don't mean sloppy controls). I am excited to see what they do with the next Silent Hill, because that series could evolve the genre without stepping too much into the action side of things.

I would liken hosting to being a basketball coach and center at the same time.  You're part of the team and have to make shots, but you also have to keep control and look at what's happening on a meta level in real time.  It takes a lot of concentration and pre-planning.

Oh I forget to mention, I completely agree w/ the assessments mentioned on the show related to slow Boom Blox sales.  I was recently able to play the game at a buddies house, and though the core gameplay was great, it just wasn't 50 dollars great.

I blame the flying monkeys in EA Marketing Department for this one.

Boom BLox is an excellent value in my opinion, the game has more depth and more modes than most games out there. The only flaw that keeps it from being truly great is the lack of an online structure to trade user created levels. There are few games with such in depth and flexible level creation tools, and that is only one small part of a diverse game.

Having put some more time in with the 1 player stuff and gotten a chance to try some multiplayer, I certainly don't feel like I've been shortchanged having spent the equivalent of $58 to buy Boom Blox. Multiplayer has been an absolute riot so far, and I've just scratched the surface with that. I can understand how this may not be everyone's cup of tea, and it's not what I'd describe as a steal by any means, but the value's there if you think you like the sound of what the game is all about.

Perception is reality.  I never said the game isn't worth 50 bucks. I said that it's presentation sure as hell isn't, and really that's all you have to go on from the box.

I'd say the market has confirmed my assessment.

I guess I understand what James is saying.  From the presentation on the box, title screen, etc., Boom Blox looks similar to a lot of budget-priced casual Wii games.  It's too bad, because there is an amazing game for people who are willing to look beneath the surface.

Those points are valid.  Not to mention the name sucks and falls right into those low selling casual games.

Monkey Go Boom and Sheep Die would have been a MUCH better title.

I will echo the sentiment that Boom Blox is totally worth your cash. If you ask me, it's the best social game since Wii Sports, hands down.

I have two time sensitive features, that need to be out like...yesterday, a review (on hold), and a time sensitive podcast.

A little busy, yes.  In my defence, we recorded Tuesday night, and Wednesday was devoted to one of the features.

My goal is feature 1 tonight, feature 2 and RFN tomorrow, review Sunday.

Until then, I'll just listen to reruns, over and over.

Sheep Die has my vote!

Sounds too much like MGS4.
Carmine Red, Associate Editor

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.
