January Console/Game Sales

Ian Sane:

"u know what i think the problem is. nintendo has too mnay good exclusives."

I seriously doubt that having the best games is going to hurt sales.  I attribute it entirely to the fact that Microsoft has done absolutely everything right with the Xbox.  They've marketed it perfectly, ensured a steady release schedule, grabbed a few major games to keep hardcore fans happy and released a lot of "safe" genre games to please the casual gamers.  They've also made Xbox Live a major selling point for their console which makes the Gamecube's "we have only one online game" policy look really stupid and inferior.  They also had that two free game deal around Christmas.

Nintendo has made a better console with better games but they don't market the system very well, are tight asses with third parties, and while they have many really great games they completely ignore certain genres which leaves a lot of holes in the Gamecube's library.  They also have all sorts of weird consumer unfriendly ways of doing everything (no demo discs, $30 discounted titles instead of $20).  Plus they offered no incentive for people to buy Cubes last Christmas.  They have the free game thing now but they should have had it then.

Microsoft has put 110% into the Xbox while Nintendo has totally half-assed it.  That's why the Gamecube is in last place.

Nintendork SP:

I think really Nintendo isn't half-assing anything it is the way they do their job, they are probably satified with what they do.  I mean Nintendo is like the Firarri of videogames or atleast in buisness practices.  For Firarri it is quality over quintity, they apply this in production and obviosly in price.  Their cars are often sold before the cars are even built, totally applies to Nintendo.  Remeber Amazon.com complaining how Nintendo gives them 15 copies of a game and they all sell, but Rockstar gives 1500 copies of GTA3 and they all sell?  Amazon's point is that why not try and send more coppies?  Well I believe this is because for Nintendo, growth came when it came but I believe Nintendo is more consentrated on stability,  they have lasted for over 100 years ya know.  So Nintendo puts out as many copies as it need to not for growth but just for sticking around.  If you guys want more proof of why Nintendo would do this sort of think keep arguing with me.  I'll be back.

BTW, people  need to stop complain about Nintendo proformance and start researching it, compare with old failures like the Saturn or the DreamCast for example.  Then you can tell yorself where Nintendo is headed instead of complaining to everyone else.

egman:

I think both Ian Sane and Nintendork SP have valid points. Yes, Nintendo is not doing a great job as Ian Sane is putting it, and I think this because what Nintendork wrote--that Nintendo feels good about what they've done so far.

Anyway you look at it though, its always quite telling when triple A, critically acclaimed, GOTY's get pummeled by mediocre 3rd party offerings. I guess what one has to figure out now is whether that is reflection on the performance of Nintendo or reflection of the state of the industry, or in my opinion a combination of those factors.

SSJBonacci2:

You know what this reminds me of... Dreamcast i mean look at the facts Dreamcast had the best grafics at the time just like xbox. Dreamcast had good games like xbox, dreamcast was all around a kick ass machine like the xbox but lemme think were is it now... hum... IT DIED JUST LIKE XBOX WILL. and i have one last thing to say didnt xbox lose microsoft like $380 million. DO THE MATH XBOX HAS NOT MADE MUCH OF A DAMN PROFIT HAS IT so in the stats for the most $ earned it would be dead last and thats nothing but pure ass marketing!!!!!!!   sorry im just really pissed
