I tried to get a decent response from a PR rep about this, but all I got was "the codes will be out soon!"

I know friends who have played the game and beaten it. While they loved it they thought the game was too short.

As for the topic, I am VERY happy for this. I've been wanting a PS3 for a while now, but still hated the bulky design and price. Now that its slimmer and cheaper its a must for me.

It was a bit short. Uncharted 2 will be longer though Naughty Dog says. It should be with 90 minutes of cut scenes.

The million dollar question with that is this: Would/did you feel cheaped out paying $60 for Uncharted? Did the game end abruptly? Did it not feel complete?

If it felt complete, then who cares if its short.

My viewpoint on game length has changed dramatically since the beginning of my NWR reviewing career (only a year or so, but still). I felt cheaped out by MadWorld's length, but felt like games like Overlord: Dark Legend and Mushroom Men were full, complete games.

I'm not decrying Uncharted (if/when I get a PS3, it'll probably be one of the first games I get), but what's so damn great about having a game that feels like a movie? If I want to watch a movie, I'll watch a movie. If I want to play a game, I'll play a game.

It doesn't "feel like a movie".  For crying out loud, when did every PS3 game become Metal Gear Solid 4?  What makes Uncharted remarkable is how deftly the cut-scenes are interwoven into the gameplay to create one seamless experience.  But then again, people that have actually played the game already know that.

See, when you say it like that, it makes me really interested in the game.

EA Sports Active Moore Workouts LOLZ

LOL that's the first thing I thought of too.

I was expecting to see him in the cover with his right sleeve pulled up while flexing to show off new EA Active tattoo.

It didn't dawn on me until I posted the article for Lindy. It just stuck out like a sore thumb and I can never go back to how I saw it before.

WayForward brings puzzles and platforming to Maurice Sendak's seminal work.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=19831

The popular children's book, Where The Wild Things Are, is being adapted to film this fall, and it is hitting the video game world as well. The DS version, developed by WayForward, is different from the other versions as it is a 2D platformer instead of a 3D one.

You play as the young Max, the King of All Wild Things, and journey through seven different worlds across the Wild Things' island, which is on the brink of destruction. Players must solve puzzles and play through mini-games as they try to tame each of the seven Wild Things in order to harness their wild ability, which aids Max in his platforming quest.

Players can also search for scepter achievements that are scattered throughout the game and try to obtain the "rumpus" alternate ending.

Where the Wild Things Are is set for an October release.

Podcast Discussion / Re: NWR Newscast: Episode 2
« on: August 19, 2009, 11:13:09 AM »
I could stand this being weekly. Just sayin'.

Do you notice how my name pops up on the main site a lot in news and reviews? Yea, that would decrease dramatically if we did these weekly.

I tried that kind of (we recorded an episode last week with Luke and Zach), but issues prevented it from being able to be edited coherently.
After that debacle, the real Episode 3 (as opposed to the fake one) will hit sometime after the Metroid Prime Trilogy launch and feature an extended talk on the game with hopefully Nick and Zach. I'll also talk about Professor Layton.
It'll be real fun.

OCTOBER RELEASE?!!

no. the video clearly says september 15 at the end.

thats been established for quite a while now. and this game is amazing and im really looking forward to it and cant wait! im getting the rooster hat as well ^.^

I think they changed the trailer at some point. I originally watched it elsewhere before we got a PR e-mail about it and it said October instead of September 15. I was bummed out when I initially saw that.
Sorry for the miscue and thanks for pointing it out.

I see the logic and I don't at the same time.

EA/Tiburon/EA Sports was ready to axe all three modes because they weren't going to be able to update it with the brand new interface. That makes sense, transforming something like franchise into a whole new interface probably takes a good deal of time, especially if you want to do it right.

As a consolation, they decided to put these in the game under the "classic modes" label. Of course, they had to screw up a perfectly good consolation prize by putting it behind a code.

It just sucks because this is the only major blemish on what is otherwise a fantastic game.

Welcome back mailbag.  ;D

As for the M+ Zelda question... Tiger Woods seems to calibrate seamlessly. There's a mention of placing it facedown for a few seconds similar to WSR if you feel that it is not calibrated properly.  But there's no popup screens or anything noticeable.  And after 2 months of play now, I've never noticed a problem.  :o

RE4 is the answer to the Sonic and the quality 3rd party games question.  :P

Tiger Woods pretty much has you calibrate the remote every time you swing a club because you have to hold B and point downwards. In a consistently active game, calibration becomes more of an issue.

I think it's supposed to become clearer when more games in the series come out.

I imagine so, but as it stands, I don't know what the hell is going on in this game storywise. I enjoy it, but it is just a hodge podge of weird 8-bit imagery.

While getting the new assets for Ubisoft's Academy of Champions up on the site, I came across a somewhat interesting press release that came out a week and a half ago that has a list of all of the game's super moves.

I've made no bones about my love for arcade soccer games or my anticipation for this game, so I'd imagine no one would be surprised by the fact that I'm going to pore over this list, which is located at the bottom of the article.

Besides the usual arcade soccer special moves that involve things like crazy shots and ridiculous tackling, Academy of Champions also has special special moves for its guest stars: The Ubisoft and Rabbids teams.

Gamescon 2009: Holy Moley! It's Sam Effin' Fisher!

As I detailed in my E3 impressions, Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher can use his night-vision goggles to get past opponents with ease. The veil has been pulled from the other members of the team, though. Assassin's Creed's Altair lets him jump into the air and dive bomb the goalie, Beyond Good & Evil's Jade uses her photo to stun opponents, and the Rabbids use plungers to shoot on goal.

Gamescon 2009:

Also, the game's two other co-stars, soccer stars Pele and Mia Hamm, have their own special moves as well. Pele's spectacular dribbles stun opponents while Hamm unleashes a devastating bicycle kick.

My excitement for Academy of Champions is still only going up. I hope the story mode turns out to be fun, but my real hope is for fantastic multiplayer. I'm hoping that happens.

Academy of Champions is set for a November 2009 release.

Academy of Champions super moves description

Super tackle: Take the ball off your opponent's toes in a blink of an eye with this lightning-fast slide tackle.

Helix Kick: Bamboozle the goalie with this insane corkscrew shot.

Banana Kick: Put extreme bend on the ball - the keeper won't know which way to turn.

Chopper: A spinning tackle frenzy that will send anyone in your path flying - including your own teammates!

Unstoppable Rush: Release that pent up aggression by knocking over anyone that gets in your way as you charge towards goal.

Cat-like Grace: Glide through tackles and defense like a knife through butter.

Stealth Attack: When Sam Fisher turns on his night-vision goggles nobody can see him - ideal for getting through on goal undetected.

Eagle Strike: Altair's assassin training helps him to launch into the air and unleash a lethal strike that will take out the keeper before it hits the back on the net.

Acrobatic Leap: Why go through the defence when you can just leap over it? The other team won't expect that!

Plunger Shot: The Rabbid weapon of choice makes for a very potent shot at goal.

Photo Fanatic: Jade will use the flash of her camera to temporarily stun her opponents and make them lose the ball.

Perfect Dribble: Opponents will be stunned by Pele's unbelievable ball skills rendering them unable to stop him.

Bicycle Smash: Mia Hamm's stunning backflip bicycle kick makes her one of the best strikers around.

Speed Burst: An explosion of pace that will help you catch up to opponents.

Dodge Move: Jump over or go around players quickly with these cool and easy to use tricks.

"The story is a bit unclear"

I think the point is that the developers want gamers to try to interpret the story.

Point schmoint. It's still unclear.

I still need to sit down and play this. I have been a busy reviewer and thus have not been able to put too much time into RetroActive since Super Ghouls N Ghosts.

I always loved this game. I never owned a SNES until five or so years ago, so most of my time with this game was over my friends' houses.

Yoshi is a game changer and really makes this game a whole different beast when compared to SMB3, which is generally my favorite in the series. There's just something about the way Yoshi mixes up the game that makes the old feel new again.

The Star Road (I think that's what it was called here) is awesome and trippy. Some of my favorite levels of Mario are encased there.

I always stock up on lives in that first Forest of Illusion level where you can get something like 10 lives in one go if I recall correctly.

I'm a huge Koopa Kids fan, and this was their last game appearance for about 10 years. I liked the little things like how Ludwig would get knocked out of his castle.

And I love the final boss. Clown Car Bowser needs to make a comeback (has he? I feel like he has recently, like in a sports game or something)

I'll probably add more after I play the game again.
