TalkBack / Duck Hunt Coming to Wii U Virtual Console
« on: November 05, 2014, 09:34:21 AM »

Celebrate Duck Hunt's Smash Bros. appearance by playing the game that started it all.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38924/duck-hunt-coming-to-wii-u-virtual-console

The NES classic Duck Hunt is coming to Wii U Virtual Console according to today's Nintendo Direct.

Originally made 30 years ago in 1984, Duck Hunt is a light gun game where you shoot down ducks and clay discs. If you fail, a dog laughs at you. That dog along with a duck are playable in Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS.

The Wii U Virtual Console version will be specially made to work with the Wii Remote, so you can mimic the experience of using the NES Zapper back in the day.

TalkBack / Excitement for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy Rising
« on: October 31, 2014, 03:04:00 AM »

Why Neal is psyched to get the first Ace Attorney games on his 3DS this December.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/38887/excitement-for-phoenix-wright-ace-attorney-trilogy-rising

The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is coming to 3DS on December 9 and despite the fact that I've played two of the three games already, I'm actually incredibly excited for this collection to come out.

One barrier for the Phoenix Wright series that I've discovered over the years is that sometimes the games can be hard to find. I know I had to track down my copy of the original across several stores in my area, I only played the sequel because I had a friend who I could borrow it from, and I never played the third one because I couldn't find it cheap enough. Years passed and I just fell off of the Ace Attorney series altogether (though I did review Ace Attorney Investigations, which is fantastic).

It dawned on me while messing around with the Ace Attorney Trilogy demo at New York Comic Con that this collection of the first three Ace Attorney games is potentially spectacular. At the end of the day, it's just a slightly upgraded collection of three old games, but it's also an easy-to-buy collection of three usually hard-to-find games.

I'm also at a point where enough time has passed since I played the first two Ace Attorney games that replaying them would be more like re-reading a beloved book then laboriously going through the motions of a linear video game. I forgot how goofy and endearing the initial Larry Butz trial was in the original while playing the demos.

I know people might complain about the price or that there isn't a physical version, but to me, the $30 price point is fine considering that, even now, you'd have to drop about $45 to get all three on DS. Plus, the eShop version ensures that players can always get their lawyer fix whenever they discover Phoenix and company.

I hope I’m not alone in my anticipation for more Phoenix Wright games. Now let’s hope that crazy one with Sherlock Holmes in it makes it over quickly…

Note: Subsequent research shows that it looks like Capcom reprinted the original three Ace Attorney games on DS. I don't think I'm totally insane; those games were very hard to find in like 2007/2008. Also, I know they're available on iOS and junk. I just would rather play it on my DS/3DS.

A free demo will be available in December so you can test out Big John Games' Cube Creator 3D early.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38876/minecraft-esque-cube-creator-3d-coming-to-3ds-eshop-early-next-year

Cube Creator 3D, a Minecraft-like game from developer Big John Games, is coming to the 3DS eShop early next year. In addition, a free demo will be out in December to give players a taste of the game before launch.

The demo version will include Creative Mode, allowing players to mess around and explore the stereoscopic 3D world. Cube Creator 3D uses the touch screen to allow inventory to always be accessible during play. No exact date for the demo was given, but Big John Games is hoping to release it in the beginning of December.

Cube Creator 3D's full version will be out in Q1 2015 and is set to include a Survival Mode packed with a variety of enemies and a mixture of random and crafted worlds. You'll be able to import what you made in the demo to the final version.

After the launch of the full game, Big John Games will continually update Cube Creator 3D to fine-tune the experience. There is no official word on price yet.

Nintendo unveils total sales for a few of their most recent games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38873/mario-kart-8-smash-bros-3ds-tomodachi-life-sell-millions-worldwide

Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, and Tomodachi Life have all crossed the 3 million unit mark worldwide according to data from Nintendo's recent financial briefing.

Mario Kart 8, launching in late May, sold 3.49 million units worldwide as of the end of September, including 2.74 million units outside of Japan. Smash Bros. on 3DS sold 3.22 million units worldwide as of the end of September, including 1.5 million units outside of Japan. Tomodachi Life has sold 1.24 million units in North America and Europe so far, pushing the surprise hit to 3.12 million units overall. Lastly, Pokémon X and Y have sold 13.29 million units worldwide since their launch last October. From April 2014 to September 2014, the pair of Pokémon games sold just over a million units.

The data includes downloaded copies as well as copies bundled with hardware. While Super Smash Bros. for 3DS technically came out in early October outside of Japan, the sales data reflects the copies that were sent to stores, so there is a chance that number is not completely exact. We do know that Smash Bros. sold 705,000 copies in America in two days, though.

TalkBack / Smash Tour Brings Mario Party To Smash Bros.
« on: October 29, 2014, 04:20:32 AM »

The Wii U version has Smash Tour instead of Smash Run. Check out our thoughts as well as some direct-feed video.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/38863/smash-tour-brings-mario-party-to-smash-bros

When I first heard about Smash Tour in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, I was a little apprehensive. A Mario Party-like mode in Smash Bros.? Would it be as slow-paced as Mario Party? Would mini-games just be replaced by fights? Is there a stock market component like Fortune Street? I didn't know what to expect, but I had a bad feeling it might just be a slow-paced board game in a game that is focused on frantic insanity.

While Smash Tour does owe some of its style to Mario Party and similar board game video games, it sets itself apart with its quick pace. Instead of everyone taking their turn in a row, you all move at once, requiring you to think on your feet to try to collect items and power-ups on the board before your opponents do. Like Smash Run, you collect stat-boosting power-ups to improve your fighters in addition to trophies that give you in-game boosts.

Turns can fly by in less than a minute, and the only time you go away from the board are when two (or more) players land on the same square. When that happens, all players go into a competition, whether it's a regular Free-For-All fight or a round of Target Blast. The winner gets a bonus and the losers get kicked around the board.

You move your Mii around the board and accrue other characters to fight for you. It appears to be random what characters you receive and when you can use them. When you reach the end of the round, which can vary anywhere between 15 and 25 turns across three different-sized boards, you then use all of your fighters in a final battle similar to Smash Run.

I'm very encouraged by what I played of Smash Run. The speed of the mode suits Smash Bros. extremely well, and while I still need to spend way more time with it to see if it will be something I play with my friends regularly, I'm curious to see what kind of insanity can come out of this smartly designed board game addition to Super Smash Bros.

TalkBack / 8-Player Smash Bros. Is Fabulous, Fast-Paced Mayhem
« on: October 28, 2014, 05:02:00 AM »

Check out thoughts and direct-feed video of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/38850/8-player-smash-bros-is-fabulous-fast-paced-mayhem

During Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. for Wii U live stream last week, I couldn't wipe the stupid grin off my face when they unveiled 8-Player Smash. As someone who has always relished the chaos of large multiplayer games, the cacophony of eight dueling Smash Bros. fighters is music to my ears. In practice, it was as magnificently goofy and fun as it sounded in my head.

The circumstances to play 8-Player Smash with the full amount of real players won't come around often, but if you have owned Nintendo consoles in the past decade, you're likely equipped to host it. You can pair combinations of Wii U controllers, Wii Remotes, GameCube controllers (with the adapter), and 3DS systems for controllers. You can even use your Amiibo in these eight-player scuffles. Heck, you can watch eight Amiibo fight at once if you really want to.

It takes some elbow grease to get up and running, but once you get 8-Player Smash going, it's delightful nonsense. The incredible thing about this mode is that the fights are kind of compartmentalized inside each stage. While the occasional massive brawls break out, I found most of my time spent fighting one or two other fighters at a time. You could be a corner fighting Mario, then send him flying as a Peach across the stage knocks a Link and a Pikachu into you while you avoid a projectile from the Samus on the other side of you.

There might be a limited stage selection (less than half of the stages in the build we played could be used with eight players), but variety is present among those stages. You have the disastrous caves of the Kirby Super Star-inspired Great Cave Offensive, where one touch of a lava wall will vaporize you if you're over 100% damage. There's the more wide open expanse of Battlefield and the bigger version simply called Big Battlefield. I also got to check out the new version of the Donkey Kong stage 75m. 75m always seemed too large in Brawl, but with eight players, it fills up nicely. Throw in the sprite-based Donkey Kong's projectiles, and it's downright deadly.

My favorite moment with 8-Player Smash was caught on video, fortunately. I played as Pac-Man on the 75m stage and as you can see in the video, I got a Final Smash. I haven't had a more rewarding Final Smash than that, because my large Pac-Man ate nearly every single fighter. Then, of course, one of Donkey Kong's projectiles hit me right after and I flew off the side of the stage. That kind of just sums up Smash Bros. in a nutshell.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is out on November 21 in North America. Stay tuned for more coverage of our recent playtime with the game this week.

This sounds like something my son would really get a kick out of.  Now here's the hard question Neal.  Where you would put the Reading level of this game?

More to the point for me is that could a 1st grader play it?

It'd be dicey. I think a lot of it is intuitive, but there is a TON OF TEXT in this game. It's hard for me to totally judge, but as much as I want to say every single person should play this, I think a first grader would have a tough time.

TalkBack / New Track Announced for Mario Kart 8

A Mario Kart: Double Dash!! track is a part of the upcoming DLC pack.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38794/new-track-announced-for-mario-kart-8

Yoshi Circuit from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is coming to Mario Kart 8's first DLC pack, which is out in November. Yoshi Circuit also appeared in Mario Kart DS.

The pack includes eight new courses, three new characters, and four new karts. The new characters are Link, Tanooki Mario, and Cat Peach. Three of the new karts are the Blue Falcon from F-Zero, the B Dasher from Mario Kart 7, and the Master Bike, which is modeled after Link's horse Epona and one of the courses in the first DLC pack is Wario's Gold Mine. The below video shows off Yoshi Circuit in Mario Kart 8 and also highlights the fourth kart, which appears to be some sort of tanooki-inspired truck.

TalkBack / Fantasy Life Review
« on: October 21, 2014, 06:03:00 AM »

As fantastical as the name implies, Fantasy Life is an immensely charming RPG on 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/38791/fantasy-life-review

Originally released in Japan nearly two years ago, Fantasy Life is a Level-5-developed 3DS life sim/RPG that combines elements of a variety of games including Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Rune Factory, and many more. At the beginning, you create your character and quickly choose a job class. After wrapping up the lengthy and drawn-out tutorial, you then can go in any direction you wish, whether it’s becoming a jack of all trades or a master of one. With 12 varied classes that oftentimes feel like they could sustain an entire game by themselves, this Nintendo-published (in North America and Europe) adventure is packed to the brim with fun content.

56.jpg

While playing Fantasy Life, an appealing kind of monotony pervades through the gameplay. Some of your time is spent exploring the world and defeating monsters, but a large chunk is spent doing more staid tasks like completing townspeople’s quests and acquiring materials to craft tools and outfits. Somehow, it’s almost always entertaining with the breadth of content even if some aspects sound lame on paper. The key is that Fantasy Life is more about solving everyday problems for the citizens of Reveria than it is about slaying the dragon and completing missions (though there is a lot of that, too). This  3DS game stands out as a novel approach to the life sim/RPG genre and feels like a Nintendo-ized version of Microsoft’s Fable series.

The structure of Fantasy Life is built on unique jobs, referred to in-game as Lives, in which you take on different careers that all feed off of each other. As a Miner, you go to caves and get ore, which can then be turned into materials and used by a Blacksmith to make weapons and armor that can be used by a Paladin in battle. Each of the 12 jobs has its own unique characters and storylines that are all charmingly written and engaging. They have their similarities, but the writing really helps each one stand out. Even if you’re doing similar mini-games to make clothes as a Tailor and make a sword as a Blacksmith, both Lives still feel unique. You can switch between them at any time and even use the skills you earn with one when you’re learning another trade. Adventuring is rarely boring when you can switch between a Cook, an Angler, or a Hunter, each with their own unique quests, at a moment’s notice.

In addition, there is a driving main storyline that is focused on bringing the different regions of Reveria together. I’d often get sidetracked from the main quest because I’d get distracted by each Life, but that highlights how the primary story is used more as an entry into the deeper world than it is as the whole experience. The main storyline takes about a dozen hours if you plow through it, but the fun of Fantasy Life is about exploring the worlds, jobs, and quests while taking your sweet time. The variety of gameplay elements is extremely diverse. There is even an Animal Crossing-like element where you can move into different homes and style them however like. You can even rides horses and tortoises and domesticate cats and dogs.

52.jpg

While I didn’t get to try out any of the StreetPass or local multiplayer, I did test some online multiplayer. You can team up with two other players and go exploring. You can’t progress the story, but it’s still fun to mess around and show your friends your Life progression and gear.

Fantasy Life is a game at a medium pace that performs at its best when you to just kick back and explore the varied classes as you adventure through the colorful world. The best part is that you can make of it whatever you want. You can become a Paladin and focus on fighting enemies, or you can take up an artisanal trade and focus on making the best armor. You can complete the main story, or sit back and make every meal you can as a Cook. Fantasy Life is an elegant, malleable experience that is one of the most compelling 3DS games I’ve played in a long time.
