General Gaming / RE: PSP vs. DS ... Final Verdict (G4)
« on: March 24, 2005, 10:57:31 AM »
Admittedly I don't follow the PSP much, hence all the questions here... But whats the story on a possible web browser/email/instant messaging system in it?  Obviously it doesn't have a touch screen so some of these things would be tough.  Regardless, I think that is where the DS can really set itself apart...  Make it a gaming and internet handheld and people would eat it up.  They better annouce it soon though or it won't have a chance.

Heh, sorry for the drilling....    What about the square button nonsense?  Have you noticed it being unresponsive?

Rick, what covers the screen?  Is there rigid glass/plexiglass or is it more like a traditional lcd?

Wait, whats the legality of a thing like this?  Is it gonna be widely available?  I want one bad.  It freaking hooks up to a tv too.  My NES has been long since kaput.

Yeah, in general, based on what we already knew, this is great news.  I mean, it could have been Microsoft.  It also could have been Konami (and we know how well the support the cube)  At least we got one of the few Devs who has actually released Cube Exclusives (kind of).

Yeah anubis, I think the point of that chick is to show off the create a character.  At least thats what I gathered from it.  If it is then the creat a character will be pretty extensive.  If you can draw from other character's move sets with the create a character mode and they balance out ability distribution it could make for some very very interesting and original tournaments.  Evolution of the fighter???  possible.. =P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the original announcment happen before the Gamespy/IGN merger?

Sega doesn't make me think of 'mature' gaming at all.....

This is really the farthest thing from what I expected.  Some of Sega's teams like Nintendo.  Hopefully Silicon Knights still likes Nintendo.  Maybe this will lead to better Sega support on the systems...  and by Sega support I mean Silicon Knights support.

Yeah...if I do ever end up with a PSP I just can't imagine actually having to decide between two similar versions of a game when one is for a home console and the other for a portable.  I don't know what I'd pick....and in this sense I think Sony will eventually start competing with themselves and MS and Nintendo.  I think it would be good for them to do a lot of managment of the libraries.  Devs may not like it but its important to their success.  Having a new version of GT launch on both systems at the same time isn't necessarily a good idea.

Nintendo and IGN in bed together....ugh....

I mean, I'm happy that we get to go online, it just saddens me that some of the money i spend on it is going in IGN's pocket.

Another thing I would like to say is that it will be interesting to see not how much the PSP sells, but how much less both the DS and GBA sell.  I still think that less that 20 percent of total psp sales is going to be attributable to a decline in DS/GBA sales.

Rick, it amazes me you are so into this PSP thing that you would post a G4 write up...god I hate that network...

Anyway...

The PSP is going to sell..... but UMD movies are gonna take off like like Minidiscs...  Fool me once Sony, shame on you...  I won't be fooled twice.

Isn't the rumor that one of the main reasons for the leadership change up was because of Sony constantly trying to create these new standards?  Its just stupid really.  Even the gameboy video sells like crap, and thats targeting a demographic that can't afford portable dvd players.  Anyone who pays good money for a UMD is just dumb, like I was when I bought studio produced MiniDiscs back in the day.

My conclusion... G4 is to video games what the current MTV is to music, and the PSP will sell well but many of the non-gaming related features will be quickly forgotten.

Picture a unit that slides over your hand and forearm...  Think of it as shaped like Samus's arm...  Inside is something similar to the throttle on a motorcycle.  It has three axis of movement as well as buttons.  Now picture playing Prime with just this on your arm, where all the aiming is done by moving your arm.  Thats what I think gyration can do for games...

Only problem is it is all very game specific.  Coming up with a universal one would be another challenge all together.

The thing is, it would make just as little sense if Namco made it a Gamecube exclusive.  They had a great formula with SCII and they are stupid not to return to it.  All of us nintendo fans would love an updated Link in the game.  Maybe they could try a different special character for the PS2 version seeing as Haiachi(sp?) didn't seem to be all that popular.  I dunno...I just feel like they are idiots here...  Well either that or Sony gave them enough money to warrant cutting their sales in half.

Maybe they invented a tactile touch screen.  It has the ability to raise and lower any part of the screen in order to make it feel like a real controller.

I had the same problem.  What I did was have one extremely strong pokemon and I started throwing timer balls when he was at about half health.  The fact that timer balls get better as you go and that his shadow punch slowly weakened eventually worked for me.  It probably took me about 6 tries though.

My definition of killer app is that it is a single game that is easily worth its cost and the cost of the system to play it on.

Are any of the PSP launch titles worth 250 bucks?  Doubtful.

Is the PSP without any games worth 200 bucks?  Some may say yes.

...all in a single hour...

Did anyone watch today's episode of CSI Miami?  I was fine with a lot of it...  Basically it played off the EA spouse letter about how evil all them video game companies were.  Uhmm i guess i'll start spoilering..

It turns out a tester killed another tester because he thought he was favored...  Yeah.. kind of dumb.
Then they ended the show with the stupid chick saying "It's easier to kill in a video game isn't it."

So, I don't know what to think.  It pissed me off the way it ended, and in general it sucked..but this is pretty bad publicity for the entire industry even though its on a fictional show.  What do you all think?

I hope it isn't just a port.  It would be nice if they took some aspects to the next level and maybe added some new modes.
