Yes, unless that 20 PS3 power facilitated a significant change to gameplay like my N64 going into 3D example.

I don't think I've said it yet because I'm so skeptical, but if this actually proves true, I think this will be one of the coolest things Nintendo has ever done.

Also, as you can see in my Wii2 hopes, there is no reason to equate an incremental upgrade with being bad.  Both have their place. :)

I'm enjoying this.  Let's study Nintendo's home consoles and whether or not they are incremental (IN MY OPINION)

NES -> Super NES
Definitely incremental.  Only possible innovation is the addition of two more face buttons and the shoulder buttons. I personally don't think either of those count.

Super NES -> N64
Here's a funny one.  Increased horsepower, which is technically incremental as I said before, allowed for a new dimension in gameplay.  This brings it into a gray area.  Combine that with the addition of the analog stick and I would say this is definitely an innovative update.

N64 -> GameCube
Definitely incremental. Significant horse power increase and second analog stick, but still same fundamental experience.

GameCube -> Wii
Definitely innovative because of the addition of a brand new control method and digital delivery.  However, the assumed horse power increase was not really present.  This is an interesting oddity.

Wii -> Wii2
Here's to hoping this will be an incremental update.  I don't want them to revolutionize anything. I want improved horse power and online support and that's it.

That was kind of fun. Someone else should do the handhelds!

Hey, don't yell at me. I'm not calling this an incremental update.

However, I do think if a system ONLY includes increased horse power, it is an incremental update.  Thus, if we are arguing this ridiculousness, it should not be included in the list of reasons why it isn't. :)

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that increased horse power is the definition of an incremental update.

I'm in level 7 of Hard now. I've definitely slowed down. I've three starred everything. I'm definitely not going to claim I haven't made symmetry guesses on occasion.  I'm pretty sure you'd have to be impossibly fast to not make guesses when hitting some of the three star time limits.

I definitely intend to finish this thing out with three stars on everything.

Well to be fair, a significant graphical increase is all part of an incremental update to some people.

Considering people lapping up the IPhone 4 and the IPad, I think Nintendo will price this higher.
Nintendo is not apple and that's why I love them.
So why don't you love Microsoft and Sony? I'm not following your logic.

Do you love me? I'm not Apple, but I use one!

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's Next Console May Employ 3D
« on: June 17, 2010, 01:11:19 PM »
Seriously though.  The next console just needs to have the horsepower to render in HD.  If it was gonna do 3D it'd have to make the jump to be able to essentially render at 2x HD resolution (horizontally).  That would be pretty substantial over the Wii.  I mean, it looks like a lot of 60 FPS PS3 games will have a drastic framerate reduction in 3D.

I'm with Ian, though not quite as angrily. :) Get your priorities straight on the console front Nintendo. You have other areas that you need to catch up in first.

I do think it will appear to be an incremental upgrade to the DS, unless they do something drastic with packaging.  You're average Mom will go into a Wal-Mart that Uncle Bob doesn't work at and inquire about the difference between the 200-250 dollar 3DS and the 150 dollar DSi.  The Wal-Mart clerk will then say "Well that one has 3D."  The mom could then very well say "That aint worth 100 dollars."

Unlike previous handheld generation changes, I think Nintendo should consider phasing out the DS ASAP after launch to avoid that confusion.  There won't really be a reason to keep it around given the 3DS backwards compatibility.

Oh, good point on the saved game data.  If this were true, how would you get your save data back on a cart after you wanted to uninstall the game?

The only way I can see Nintendo being OK with this is if each copy of each game has some sort of unique identifier in the code.  Then, when installing it, you permanently link that unique identifier to your system/account.  After that it can't be installed anywhere else.

This would have the side effect of gimping the used game market.  It would also have significant customer service implications.  Used game buyers could be pissed. Parents of sibling could be pissed.

Yeah, overall, I just don't see this actually being true.

I don't buy this at all.  There is no way they could prevent rampant game sharing.  Not sure what Nikkei messed up, but yeah, i don't buy it.

It sounds similar to wii sports but you can actually move the players... which is kind of critical.

I enjoyed most of hoops 3-on-3 so I'm still looking forward to this.

Like to see the comment about us using bark mode at E3 next year. Further cements their intention to release 3DS this fiscal year.  I still think this is the strangest E3 before a console launch ever. No real games shown in a playable fashion.

Everybody would be really excited about this if it were made by a different developer.
I guess that's the point. It'd be nice to be getting this game and still having the "What's Retro Doing?" hype train rolling.

I'm pretty underwhelmed by this game too.  Donkey Kong Country sequel is great and all, but I expected the "What's Retro doing?" hype train to take me somewhere completely different.

I love everything about the trailer except for the odd scene with enemies in what looks like a castle courtyard.  That looks very poorly done.  I hope it's just a product of the game being early.

I'm seriously psyched for this though.  I love the Pit character model from Smash and I'm glad they are using it here.  Does anyone else get a distinct Sin & Punishment vibe from some of the scenes?

My gut tells me that there were lights on the ceiling that the Wii remote was thinking was the sensor bar.  So when he put the remote vertical to shoot the bow, teh game thought it was still facing the screen.  Or something.

I'm just guessing though.

I have to say, reading this impression of the screens fidelity and comparing it to the tech specs has me confused.  The actual resolution of either screen is more ore less unchanged from the DSi.  Therefore I can only assume that the crispness Jonny is talking about is only due to more horse power.

That horsepower increase is definitely awesome, but I'd be lying if I wasn't infinitely bummed that we are still looking at base screen technology that is 15 years old.

Thinking about this more, I guess the top screen can't be 15 years old, because it is actually doubled up resolution, which is awesome,  But why only 240 horizontal lines?  That's exactly the same as the DSi.

The bottom screen IS a DSi screen.  That's just sad.

I can't wait to try one out in person.  I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up for hyper high res screens to begin with.

TalkBack / Re: Why Nintendo Doesn't Get It (Regarding New DS Rumor)
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:53:00 AM »
I don't think anyone but tech geeks care about the number of pixels, and that's mostly irrelevant to gaming anyway. What I'd like to see is a resolution increase, to make it equal to the standard television resolution of 640x480 (or whatever widescreen is, 800x480?).
It's funny you say that because the entire reason HD TV looks better than standard def is because of more lines of resolution per inch.  If all we did was make a 480p set 60% larger, it would have just looked like a huge grainy piece of crap.

Bumping this ancient thread to point some stuff out now that the iPhone 4 is official and the 3DS will be official next week hopefully.

The DSi XL has a PPI of 76.  I can't freaking stand looking at it.

Back when I made this rant I used the iPhone screen as a benchmark for a great screen, which has a PPI of 163.  The iPhone 4 will have...

326 Pixels Per Inch!!!.

I sincerely hope the 3DS will have at least 200 PPI in order to be somewhat relevant. If it has less than 100 I will throw up.

275
I find all of these specs HIGHLY suspect and almost laughable.

That said, if Nintendo actually comes out and shows a technologically impressive device, I will eat crow and be SO thankful that they decided to push the envelope again.

So what do I consider technologically impressive?  Without getting too specific, the screens have to have at least the PPI of the Moto Droid and the graphics have to be at least on par with the Cube.
