BTW, maybe it's just me, but I find that getting this sort of non-functional scratch can be a good thing -- I'm also anal with new stuff, but once it gets scratched up a bit, after the initial shock I find I stop caring, and am less stressed about the whole issue.

Think of it as a `patina' ...

I agree, it sucks, but it's not surprising -- previous `metallic' gameboy stuff had exactly the same problem (e.g., the silver `Gameboy Light'), and I'd already decided to get black for precisely this reason.

I also examined GBA SP display models in Akihabara, which got quite a lot of handling even in the few days since the release, and both the silver and `metallic blue' models showed obvious signs of wear, whereas the black didn't seem to.

Even anodized aluminum can scratch in normal usage, though it's harder than paint (I've got some anodized aluminum electronics stuff that's scratched up).  I think if you want real durability, you've gotta go with titanium or something, and that'd certainly do a number on the price ... but man, would it look cool; I'd definitely drop $300 on a titanium GBA SP!

[The metallic blue, BTW, is very nice, a lot better than the matte blue of the GC/GBA, if you can deal with the wear problem]

That's just bullshit -- maybe you really enjoy battles, but many people don't, and an RPG without any battles at all would still very much be an RPG.

I played a lot of D&D in college, and one thing I noticed is that it was only the worst campaigns that involved lots of fighting (usually run by an incompetent DM, who couldn't come up with a good story).  Far more interesting were the ones where you spent most of your time really role-playing, actually interacting with other characters, not just throwing a few dice and getting a score.

[note that if battling where what people enjoyed about RPGs, you'd see a lot more `american-style' RPGs around, but in fact the story-heavy `japanese-style' seems far more popular]

General Gaming / Nokia's new handheld a gba killer
« on: February 08, 2003, 03:20:47 PM »
The thing is, the N-gage is not just more expensive, it's worse -- the screen is physically a lot smaller than the GBA's, with lower-resolution and fewer colors, and the battery life sucks.  The design is sort of ... meh.  It's clear they're trying really hard to look radical and cutting edge, but the result is the sort of overblown attempt at cool that only a marketing department could come up with (look at their website for more evidence of this... lots of models looking really constipated).

What's wierd is that despite having a larger screen, the GBA SP is actually smaller than the N-gage (the N-gage is slightly smaller than the original GBA, but the SP folds into half that size)!

It seems pretty clear that Nokia was thinking their competition was the original GBA, and Nintendo's sudden release of the GBA SP is going to hurt them.

NWR Feedback / List of Suggestions

Please don't listen to these people that are calling for more neon colors and dancing GIFs.  The new forum is refreshingly simple and even rather elegant looking (especially compared to the tacky horror that is ezboard).  It may not be perfect, but unlike most web forums, it was apparently designed by someone with a bit of taste.

The web is full of sites that are apparently competing to see who can have the most clashing colors, the most confusingly complex layout, and the slowest load times; don't let this one become one of those.

BTW, another think I've noticed is that these new forums seem fast -- I've got a slow connection and many sites are pigs (including PGC's main site [and ezboard]), with severely bloated HTML and useless gee-gaws out the wazoo, but these forum pages load very quickly!

p.s. So don't go bloating them with dancing GIFS, hear?

p.p.s. Also I love that you can edit your posts retroactively; I never notice mispellings until after I've posted....

Reader Reviews / SKIES OF ARCADIA (request)
« on: February 01, 2003, 03:21:12 PM »
I can't say I've played it all, but I'm currently playing it (I'm very slow), and I'd say hell yeah -- it's far more engaging that most other RPGs I've played.  The story is nothing ground-breaking, but the game tells it very well, and really draws you in.  There's also something really cool about flying around in your sky ship as opposed to yet another trudge to the next town like a typical RPG.  Using a ship to get from place to place feels far more integrated into the non-ship action than the usual `overworld' (which always makes me feel like I'm playing on a gameboard, and ruins any feeling of immersion).

The graphics are certainly not up to gamecube standards as far as polygon count and special effects are concerned, but they're pretty well done for what they are, and some of the design is breathtaking.

Another point that I really appreciate is the lack of the stupid teen angst thing that FF in particular is infested with; the characters in SoA are appealing if a bit one-dimensional.  The villains are also cool, both appealing and dastardly at the same time, in the best movie-villain tradition.

Anyway, unless you're a total graphics whore, or hate all console RPGs, run out and buy this game immediately!

Yeah, I agree, these new forums seem much better than the horrid old ezboard ones.  I couldn't even create a user for the ezboard forum, it just never worked without any obvious reason why (maybe ezboard is one of those crap `only works with internet explorer' sites; I haven't tried the new site with anything really funky, but at least it works with mozilla).

Also the this new forum site is much prettier graphically.

I don't know why you guys switched, but I'm very glad you did...
