Looks like MSNBC is now upset at Jack Thompson, at least on the internet they are.  My guess?  Thompson blamed a version of CS that MS published, and even wrote a letter to Bill Gates.  I think this is a threat to Thompson, that if he doesn't stop with the pushing that CS did this, then MSNBC might go into actual stuff against JT on air.  That's my impression.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Lazy Town: Can the Wii hook this Killer App?
« on: April 20, 2007, 08:05:55 AM »
I say we black out the sun, so that way we can Wii all we want outside.  Who's with me?

I think Pale told so many of us he was a townie that it seemed like voting him off would  look bad, and if you want to be successful as mafia in the game, you really don't want to waste your time on the townie rolls, unless they may be up to something/

Well, after watching the AOTS chat they all had back when Bully was close to coming out, I have to say, I was saddened.  It seems to me like no one that gets put on the air is able to combat what Jack Thompson says directly to him.  I mean, I disagree thoroughly, and I can't believe how convicted he is in his thoughts and actions, but I have yet to see one time where someone has gone against Jack Thompson, and from a neutral point of view, come out on top, in terms of a Television interview, BTW, not Penny Arcade, and not in the courtroom.  I think what it comes down to is that Thompson knows his stuff, he knows his point, and remains focused on that, and that he expects what most people have to say.  You can bet if Thompson had called onto that show, Limbaugh wouldn't have had such an easy time winning over a neutral audience, provided both sides get a fair say.

I have to agree with Penny Arcade, though.  I think the best way to prove him wrong is to show the great things games and gamers have down, while comparing games to earlier media that was censored previously, but is now considered brilliant works of art.  It would be important not to get caught up in things that have already been deemed bad by the public, such as Hot Coffee, and instead deem this as a big mistake the developers left in, and shouldn't have.  In reference to Super Columbine Massacre, talk about the award it almost received, first off, and secondly, attempt to get footage of the game on air, even if only brief, to allow the audience to know that you couldn't train to kill on the game.

Bring up Child's Play, and ask him what he thinks about that, and then bring up studies about stress, and studies about how gaming relieves stress.

To end up the discussion, I imagine that you could go with one of any different scenarios.  You can talk about how there were school shootings before games were commercially available, though you can be sure Thompson expects that, he gets it a lot.  You could bring up that when Hitler was in jail was when he wrote Mein Kampf, ultimately, a form of ultimate censorship, and obviously, this didn't stop him from his atrocities against humanity.  That may be a little too dramatic, though, and would make you look like a crazy extremist.  I suppose another option would be to bring up the value of family, and that, as with any form of media, it is important for families to be actively involved in all types of media their children observe, teaching them what is appropriate, and using the time spent as bonding time as well.

That seems pretty sound to me, and shows that games, just because they can be violent, do not cause violence in those playing them.  Somewhere, I suppose it should be mentioned that the Washington Post retracted the part of the article that blamed Counter-Strike.  Overall, I really haven't spent too much time following Thompson's actions until now, and on television, I have to say, to a neutral audience, he is a very convincing person.  He appeals to things normal people like, and he references things that they don't know about, so they don't know any better than to trust him.  It's sad for me to say this, but I feel like most people I have read from on the internet, including the owners of several major gaming sites, seem to be able to see how well he speaks on camera, and how influential he can be.  Instead, they become outraged, and if given the opportunity, they react to Thompson like Sessler did, not even intending to.  Unfortunately, Sessler was prepared to make an argument, with references and studies, and the like, but he isn't used to being off script, nor is he used to arguing against someone that can purport himself as a hero on camera so easily.  If you watched that hardball clip objectively, you'll see that he has little problem convincing Matthews that there were video games out there for people to train how to kill on, despite the fact that Matthews typically remains incredibly skeptical of anyone that appears on his show, especially those who are conservative.

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo DS Dominates March Sales
« on: April 19, 2007, 03:48:50 PM »
Yes, no matter how you look at this report, it's rather obvious that Nintendo is the loser.

7384
You forget there is a question mark, there.  That is just speculation.  Additionally, around holiday times, the console makers usually attempt to flood the market with their console, so everyone gets one.  That article is purely speculation, and has little basis to support an argument, especially considering the behavior the article suggests Microsoft is taking is the same approach Sony has always used in respect to consoles sold.

7385
What are the sales numbers?  I found a comparison chart for the first four months, but I know Microsoft was limited in supply for 360s that time.  Does anyone have a comparison chart for the first year and four months?

7386
Well, I disagree, to an extent.  IIRC, Microsoft never made a profit on the individual Xbox sales, but now, they are making profit on each 360.  This means, that relative to last generation, rather than losing money on three main things, advertising, box sales, and wooing third parties, they now only lose money on luring 3rd parties and advertising.  This switch from loss to at least breaking even on box sales happened dramatically faster than anyone expected, I'm sure.  It doesn't hurt to suspect that Microsoft does have a plan here, and it is a great possibility that they do, when you look at their relative success against the PS3.

I think it depends on whether or not Microsoft can establish that the Wii and 360 cater to different markets.  If they cannot remain individual entertainment systems, then they don't have much hope.  A lot of that depends on whether or not Nintendo can garner what was going to be exclusive support for the system, which is still up in the air.

To sum it up, Microsoft's existence in the gaming sector will probably be entirely dependent of keeping their games away from Nintendo, so they are their own entity.  If we see R* games on the Wii, if we see DMC whatever on Wii, and games to that extent, they won't have anything.  If they can maintain those licenses to only the more hardware intensive systems, Microsoft can make it.

7387
I could have sworn I read a report that stated Microsoft was finally making a profit from the sales of a 360.  I guess not.

7388
For those of you who say only Fox News would put him on air, know that Hardball featured him, and there's an article with the clip on kotaku.  In it, Matthews at first doubts Thompson, but it seems like he begins to believe him as time passes.  I swear, whenever a show features JT, they need to have someone on screen that knows what they are talking about to counter his "facts."

7389
Yeah, I would have to say that we got most of our info from everyone but SUPER, but he did verify a bit of it for us after we heard it.  Spak told us who he was, Wandering told Spak who he was, Sessha went crazy.  With Oohhboy we were lucky, and that was it the main people alive for the majority of the game.
So the question of how did we know who everyone was?  Additionally, Wandering, I still can't figure out that rant you posted on the day I lost, so I can't see how that got everyone to switch their vote around.  I just don't see why you wouldn't listen to Sessha and tell people to vote out me from his message, first, especially since he was killed by the mafia, so he definitely was good.

Additionally, next time, don't kill the seductress on the recruiting day.  One of you would have been on our side for the win.  It would have been Wandering, but people didn't trust the stoolie, so that position was up for grabs, pretty much.  One of you should have messaged me, asking if I would let you in, and then changed your vote for my favor.  It would have been nice to live through the whole game.

He was clever enough to tell a lot of people his role on the third day, in hopes to be recruited that night.  Smart idea, I think.  Anyways, from the end of the third day, we were invincible from the night's actions, IIRC.

Well, I have to say that I agree with Pittboi 100%.

In fact, I would venture to say that if any developer is willing to reduce the polygons of most next-gen games, they'd be reproducible on the Wii easily.  Though sometimes, I suppose having too many enemies on screen at once could be a problem, I think that even fade-in effects would allow this to be possible.  That's a reason why I went with the Wii this generation: With the NES to SNES, there was increased functionality, noticeably sharped AI, and several other aspects in games were improved upon.  The next generation, with the PS and the N64, well, obviously these two systems added greatly to what could be done in gaming.  The generation after that, with the PS2, 360, and GC, well, to me, they allowed 3D gaming to look clean, and paved the start of online gaming, and that's about it.  Developers weren't truly limited by system power at this point, and they really didn't do everything they could with the hardware, despite what they may have claimed.  Worlds became huge, and games became too long for my case, in most situations.

Now, what does the new generation bring?  Sharper graphics, and that's about it if you don't include motion controls.  However, with this, there's more expensive games, more expensive TVs, and only minimal increase in difference.  Most developers don't need to waste their time too much on the superficial stuff.  If they can maintain a nice style, graphics, to me, mean nothing much, so long as the system can maintain this style.  At this point, I cannot imagine a style that cannot be conveyed with the power of the systems we have.  I would love for someone to prove me wrong, but I doubt it will happen.  That's just me, though.

TalkBack / RE: 530,000+ Pre-Order Pokémon

Actually, it works a lot like gift cards.  Stores sell gift cards to get money immediately, rather than later.  When someone buys a gift card, though the store gets the same amount of revenue from the items bought for the value of the card, the store gets increased utility from having the money earlier.  This means that they can invest the money however they choose, and most likely turn it into more money sooner.

The difference is that these EB and GS are more aggressive with their tactics, that instead of just offering a preorder, they press their employees to sell a certain amount of preorders among other things, because of the increased utility available from that preorder.  I know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this type of treatment, I've even watched it happen to others, in multiple cities, as well.  On top of that, I've read about it on the internet, from others, though this is less credible.  Anyways, no I have not worked at a store like that, but a few years ago, I was one of those kids that were the great friends with all the other kids that worked in the store, and I have to say, these things were the bottom lines of what they told me.  Other than that, I've read about the utility of Gift Cards and Preorders in economic reports and information.

I also know that the employees that work in an individual store are not the ones that actually order the items, there is either a manager of some sort, or a computer that uses an algorithm to determine how to order a product, that takes preorders into accounts.

Also, your comparison of gaming specialty stores to that of a department store is fallacious.  You use size in your comparison, and in general, the size of a video game section in a department store is smaller than that of a gaming specialty store.  Also, the specialty stores, at least every single one I've been in, have had stock rooms where they hold extra merchandise.  Department stores typically do not store video game stock they have in their stock room, unless they receive the item before street date.  They usually put all stock on the floor, and when they are out of any gaming item, if you ask a clerk about it, this is exactly what they will tell you.

Edit: So basically, if you care to be business-savvy, you know preorders are a poor decision, for loss of utility of your own money.  Though, like I said before, there are a few cases where preordering secures you an actual copy of the game, whereas normally, you would have little to no chance of ever being able to buy the game new.

Games are a little bit different in this area.  Consoles almost always sell-out in several places upon release.  Games selling out are either the cause of a small order or from a small production.  In reality, this game will not be victim to either of these symptoms, unless they are done intentionally.  It would be like selling out of Halo or Madden, no one does, except for places that aggressively promote preorders.  If you walk into Best Buy, you'll see a table holding dozens or hundreds of these games.  This case is most likely to be no different.

I thought it was back at E3 '06.
They went on that whole "White Engine" spiel.

I just thought the novelty would be nice, you know.  Kind of like why they brought back S-U-P-E-R today.  There was no need, we still would have won, but still, having everyone alive is just nice, even if it is superficial.

NOOOOOO I hate preorders.  Look, this is one of Nintendo's biggest franchises.  While EB and GS may sell out, almost no other place will, because they actually order enough.  The main two stores that offer presales, are GS and EB, and when popular games come out, they intentionally order fewer copies than they know they need, to create an artificial shortage to encourage more preordering next time.  It's a dirty trick, and if the game is going to have several printings, there's no reason to even consider preordering it.

However, if the game looks like it will have few printings, like PW:AA and Trauma Center, it might be worth it, but really, there's no reason to, other than in those circumstances.

7399
I was a little worried after that.  Up until I died, we were still trying to see if there was a way to have you alive for when we won.  Or at least, I was trying to find that out.  It seemed very possible when oohhboy lost.

Obviously those machines don't count.  I don't even think that little one could come close to killing anyone.
