To me it just proves that no matter WHAT outlandish steps Nintendo takes to avoid criticism from the public at large regarding safety, it still isn't going to escape the "games are violent! Waa waa waaaa!" outcries that are aimed at ALL of the gaming industry by people with too much time and not enough responsibility for one's actions (or inactions). So instead of constantly crippling their online and frustrating their fans to appeal to people who probably don't play games anyway, they should just grow a pair and stand up to public criticism, just like every other gaming company has done.

QFT again. If people are willing to make the mental leap of absurdity required to link video games to terrorism, they will ALWAYS find excuses to call them a detriment to society. And if Nintendo can't get online working smoothly and efficiently, they will have a very large disadvantage in the long run.

If they really wanted to adhere to 'truth in advertising', they would have done the logo in that creepy font that looks like it's dripping blood.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Official Wii Sales Thread

I'm personally pretty sure that within three years' time, there'll be at least one out-of-the-blue franchise or game that is so well-received that it becomes a killer app, and people ask 'why wasn't this obvious to us before'?

Take Smash Bros. for example (although this isn't the best example, it's the first one that comes to mind). There wasn't a lot of hype when it first came out on the N64. There weren't enormous expectations or a planned world-wide launch. But the game was fun, and sold a lot. Smash Bros. was just begging for a sequel, and we got one that was even more successful. Melee is probably one of, if not the best selling game on Gamecube (and the numbers are quite respectable even when compared with games across all different platforms). And now everyone's waiting with bated breath for Brawl, which is the third installment in what has become a flagship franchise in its own right.

Yes, the example above is a first-party game. But still, with all the support that the Wii is garnering from third parties (esp. compared with last generation), it's more likely than not that something is going to emerge. And even if it's developed by Nintendo, in the end, it'll still drive sales and provide a compelling reason for people to buy the system.

I know that making a killer franchise isn't a formulaic, or even predictable process. You don't make the next monumental game by following a secret recipe. But I'm still inclined to believe the best, especially with so many people working on designing games. There have to be at least a few talented folks within the crowd, with their own super cool ideas waiting to see the light of day.

So, not only does the Wii allow young kids to look at dirty pornos on the Internets, it also supports TERRORISM.

Nintendo, have you no shame?!

Keyboard and Mouse is how the real FPS do it. Halo's status among other console FPS games is irrelevant because, in the end, that's not where the real competition is.

End thread.

It's alright. I expect CNET on the whole to be the first group of assh*les up against the wall when the revolution comes.

Graphics don't have to be photorealistic 3D models with all sorts of shaders and lighting and whatnot in order to look good. One of my favorite games, graphically, was Baten Kaitos Origins, which had some of the best prerendered backgrounds I've ever seen. Even if that is a bad example, I'm sure everyone can think of at least a few games where stylized low-poly models were still more convincing and aesthetically pleasing than 'photorealistic' graphics.

The iPhone is really, really overpriced. The RAZR was around $500 when it first came out, though, and now they're practically giving them away. (Not saying the same will happen, but that a price drop because of phone-company subsidies is possible).

I actually think it would have been cooler if they had made a touchscreen iPod with PDA functionality- the iPhone without the phone part, and with more processing power- it would probably have been more 'cost-effective'. But I digress. Considering that this phone has been in development for more than a year, I wouldn't expect any hypothetical deal between Nintendo and Apple to be announced until at least this summer, probably later.

Is Nintendo's infrastructure technically capable of hosting a friends-matching (XBox Live/battle.net)-type service, or MMORPG-type games?

Good grief. The sooner Sony can rip its own entrails out, the sooner Nintendo can focus on Microsoft.

I sure hope this 'second-mortgage super-luxury do-everything game console' trend dies out this generation.

I know I will be on Amazon at 6:50 AM tomorrow morning frantically hitting 'reload', and probably doing so for the rest of the morning. They claimed they sold out 'in less than one minute' on the 19th. I'd be willing to spend 48 hours in the cold, if I knew where the damn things were. Right now, (at least in my area) it seems like finding a needle in a haystack blindfolded: you either get really lucky or you don't.

I'm also sick of salespeople giving me misinformation. I went to Toys R' Us earlier this month and was told by the sales rep at the electronics section that 'we're done for the season, and definitely not getting more in until next year'. Then I call back on the 22th, and someone else tells me that they had them earlier in the day, but they were all sold out. Go figure.

(Oh, one more thing: it's 'between' those times, PST: "at some point between 7am and 11am PST")

If the emulators really are bundled with the games (like was stated in another thread), the only real problem would be creating an 'engine' that runs on the Wii/"GCN+" architecture.

Besides, if Nintendo reps have said stuff about adding other systems possibly in the future, it's more than likely that the emulators aren't hardwired (or else they'd have to do it through a cumbersome firmware update, including people who might not even ever play the game).

I agree, Brood War really did add a lot to the game. Having Wii-powered Starcraft, especially something playable over Battle.net, would only increase the appeal of the Wii in certain markets.

I think that their long-ballyhooed game Ghost would be best-suited for Wii, actually. The graphics are more stylized, which is the Wii's strong point, and the controller would work really well with the mixed guns/stealth action that the game was supposed to have.

I think RTS games would actually be enjoyable to play on Wii, with the pointer interface. (I always thought that it was torture playing shooters with the two analog sticks, but meh...what do I know about FPSes?)

His software is apparently so advanced, it can reconfigure your computer's ICs into a primitive GPS receiver in order to detect your physical location: "If you try to run it in Israel it will give you an error."

I don't quite see why people are touting graphics in the distant future or the PS3's '10-year lifespan' or whatever. What will computers look like 10 years from now? What did they look like 10 years ago? I can tell you one thing: they'll make all three of the consoles available (or not available) today look like utter crap, in terms of hardware specs. It's been 5 years since GCN was released, maybe 6 since PS2 was released, and the stuff you can play on a decent computer today makes each console look quite dated.

If Nintendo waits 8-10 years to put out a new console, it's doomed regardless...which is why I agree we'll probably see a Wii2 in 5 or less years, or whatever next-generation solution Nintendo decides to cook up next. Honestly, in light of what even mid-level computers with hardware upgrades can put out these days, I think that the most compelling arguments towards consoles in general revolve around the aspects that PCs can't easily duplicate: input mechanisms specialized for gaming, easy setup, same-room multiplayer action. These are aspects upon which the Wii is competing.

Also, graphics improvements will only continue to grow more incremental. It's easier to see the difference between a 100 and 1000-poly model than between one, for example, that has 10000 and another with 5000 or so. I think that art direction is going to play a larger role in the future, an aspect which is less dependent upon hardware capable of rendering more and more photorealistic graphics, and more dependent upon the creative vision of the designer.

And I really hope they don't get backlogged into spring...

but I also agree that this would sell another 5,000,000 copies of SSBB.

My point exactly.

I agree, but I still think Nintendo could do a lot worse.

Anyways, someone mentioned the old Pokemon games...does anyone think it's likely that Nintendo will release GBC-vintage titles on VC? I'm pretty sure they aren't sold anymore, and there could be some interesting choices.

Wikipedia says...
"The N64 version is notable due to the compression techniques that the developers were forced to use in order to fit 2 CD-ROMs worth of data (including voice acting and FMV) into a single cartridge."

So, I guess it's most likely possible.

I wouldn't mind FF7 appearing as a VC game or a remake. I think it would be cool if Nintendo/their developers actually took the time to put in features like sharper graphics/better color or online multiplayer, but they know they'll sell so many copies regardless...this would also apply to that multi-CD argument: although the majority of the stuff on each CD in a multi-CD game is repeated across all X-number of CDs (this applies not just to FF7, but also to most multi-CD games on PS), it would take some effort to recode the game to handle the revised CD-changing mechanisms. I think it's technically feasible to get FF7 down to a size where it would be under a CD's worth in size (improved video compression?), but it would likely be more effort than Square would deem it to be worth.

It seems like all the FF stuff that's appearing as remakes, though, is stuff that was on non-Sony properties originally. It seems as if most of the post-6 numbered-FF stuff is currently being reserved for Sony properties- the crappy FF7 spin-offs, for example.

It'll never happen, but if Nintendo put Cloud Strife or Sephiroth in SSB:B, they'd crush Sony once and for all...just think about it! All the FF7 fanboys would be forced to get a Wii and SSB:B, at which point they would be exposed to the superiority of Nintendo and forced to forswear their misguided allegiances! Hahaha! Okay, enough random ranting...
