Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo invented what!?!?
« on: January 09, 2006, 07:08:05 PM »
How is it not evolutionary? The next logical step was to build rumble into the controller. It's something that's expected - why is it dumbassed? Not like I called it a 'revolution' or anything like that. Dual analog was perhaps less obvious, but many testify of it's usefulness, though it's lost on me (I don't usually play the kind of games that would benefit from DA)

I'm not a big fan of dual analog or the Dual Shock2 controller myself, but honestly, Artimus, what did you expect Sony to do? Completely ignore how successful Nintendo was with their formula? Of course they'd'steal' it. Take cars, f'rinstance -  interchangeable parts, the conveyor belt, the assembly line, engine innovations etc. all happened. You look at the success of Ford with the Model T (still the best selling car ever, I believe topping even the VW bug).

In any case, I believe Microsoft integrated rumble into controllers before Sony even did (with their Sidewinder Force-Feedback pad.) If you don't like the Dual Shock, say so - but don't knock Sony for doing what every corporation in any industry has done consistently. That's just fanboyism, pure and simple.

Magik - exactly. Nintendo innovates the technology, while Sony evolves it, innovating in a different way and some would say, to a lesser degree. Now let's drop it. And I don't think it's the standard tendofan defense of tiku tiku tiku, the two are wholly separate issues.

KDR: We should ask Reggie if that rhinocerous is around.

animecyberrat - I believe the biggest advantage the SNES had over the Genesis was that it had a dedicated sound-chip, so the ~7Mhz CPU didn't have to break a sweat over it.

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo DS Worldwide Sales Nearing 13 Million
« on: January 05, 2006, 08:47:31 PM »
I'm curious...aren't there more people in Europe(some 450 million vs. ~300 million) than there are in America? If so, should the market be bigger? If not, why not?

Do we have a country-by-country breakdown of DS sales?

ThePerm's right, no Mary here, this is hardcore Old Testament.
Maybe the significance is in the content of the Mary; maybe the heroin leads to the 'valley overshadowed by death'.

Haha, 13 million. Probably closing in on total 'Cube sales for the past five years, except that this one did it in one. Pretty ridiculous.

Hehe, I'm no Christian either, I'm an Orthodox Jew.

Here's the King James version of the 23rd Psalm, as that one is probably more applicable here, despite the fact that it is a translation (that they took some artistic liberties with):

A psalm of David:

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil:
For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou annointest my head with oil;
My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

Apparently, this is known as "The Lord's Prayer", but I have no idea what the significance of that is. The English words sound familiar. All  I know is that it's very beautiful in the Hebrew, and that Orthodox Jews say it (usually) twice a week - Friday night and Saturday morning, times of joy I might add.

EDIT: After further research (google), I've found that people read it out loud in times of grief (at funerals, for example.) Weird twist.

Mr. Eko is gonna kick some ass...aww man...I'm gonna have to watch the last episode again. I just noticed, btw, that the title of the next show is the 23rd psalm (coincidence that it' the 23rd? I think not, though the content of the 23rd is pretty fitting to Eko, methinks.)

Also, you guys all know about these sites, right?:

Link to 1UP article.

That's one damn cool looking postcard, edgy with those nunchucks.
To the European press only though...they should be starting the hype machine here also. Hopefully a sign of earlier news?

Good to hear, I guess, even if it is EGM we're talking about. We need positive Revo news...

Ian, as far as your doubts about the non-gamer strategy...the DS was trailing behind the PSP, just as analysts predicted, until the release of Nintendogs...Also, the four latest games to reach the million mark for DS all happen to be non-games, Nintendogs included (I consider Animal Crossing a non-game).

I think Ian's point was that the DS is beating the PSP because Sony's screwed themselves with the whole UMD-movie thing, and that's why people are going to the DS. A point which I don't completely believe, though I'm sure it contributed in some way to the DS's growth recently.

There's definitely going to be some crazy Rev-exclusive mini-games for that thing, don't know why I didn't think of it before now...probably the prospect of swinging a sword overshadowed it.

Wall street analysts, in any field, are usually full of it and are trying to cover their own asses or pander to what the audience wants to hear (and, of course, money hats. Anyone seens Syriana?). Ditto for most game reviewers, film critics, etc. etc.

Honestly, I think that Nintendo has hit rockbottom in terms of console market share, and at this point, if they play they're marketing and game cards correctly (admittedly a big if), market share has nowhere to go but up. Certainly not 5 million in two years.

More likely the ESRB will force them to, though I doubt they'll have to, considering that it's Nintendo we're talking about.

Nintendo Gaming / Non-gamer strategy proving successful?
« on: December 26, 2005, 04:56:59 PM »
Reuters - Nintendo has sold 5 million DSs in Japan

It took Nintendo 14 months to hit that mark with the GBA and Sony 17 months to hit that with the PS2 (though isn't really a valid comparison; considering the price difference between a DS and a PS2.)

So what does this mean? Is the non-gamer idea working, or is this just a bunch of PR spin?

P.S. - I don't own a DS because I don't have enough time for the games I already have, let alone the myriad more titles I'd wanna get on the DS.

Dude, this is the wrong forum to ask for this kind of thing...google is your friend, if you must...it really is not that difficult to find the major sites, buddy.

Consider things under a Creative Commons license...

unless you're looking for hard to find OOP type things. MySpleen is a great example - they specialize in LD-to-DVD transfers, as well as TV shows that will probably never see an official release.

EDIT: I CAN'T READ.

« on: December 22, 2005, 06:48:58 PM »
Yeah...I know I used the word myself, but I doubt Nintendo will f*ck up any sort of additional Rev functionality (honestly, they can't afford to) If the addition is going to be something involving sword combat, this could be a great title to show off the Rev with (again, I'm assuming that they're NOT going to f*ck that up, hopefully not too much to ask)

Another pt. in the article makes it seem like there will be a simultaneous worldwide launch. Microsoft attempted that this holiday season, and got burned by it because of shortages. At the same time, they burned everyone else, because they're all waiting to buy their 360s. So if they attempt this, they better do it right (e.g. no ridiculous shortages like the 360)

I doubt too many others'll get the treatment. Windy, you're right - this is a good idea; it'll be great in terms of selling Rev. What could they be doing for another year? Building in a multiplayer-mode, a la Four Swords, except in full 3D with Rev graphics? This would make Zelda the Rev's killer app, both on the single- and multi-player sides! Damn, this is a good idea. We get f*cked over of course, since we have to wait and there'll be no more real Cube games in the meantime, but as I'm behind the time and my GC games collection is limited to 10-11 games, a couple of which I haven't finished, I'm sated. (I ain't exactly hardcore yet...owing to the fact that I have to manage my time between different media.)

Hmm...they took the middle route...nice that they've add that functionality. I just hope that it hasn't been showhorned in, and also (somewhat meekly) that they'll have something for us to munch on in the mean time (any important Cube games on the horizon?)
