Nintendo Gaming / RE:Iwata to reveal Revolution details at GDC?
« on: February 03, 2006, 08:51:36 AM »
OK, *I* could have told you guys that something would be going down at GDC. This isn't worth a 'news story.'

Anyways, I suspect Ian is right - probably not too much new info, lots of patting on back. But we will get SOMETHING. I mean, it would be way too stupid, even for Nintendo, not to take advantage of GDC. If I were them, I'd come out of the blue and show something big, a couple of months before E3 - show us that they've leading us on the whole time. Of course, there's no way that's gonna happen, but as I said - we will get SOMETHING. What that something is I don't know what, but I'm pretty sure we'll get it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:losing the KiddiƩ perception

Spak, the problem, I believe is in the variety of mature games. The fact of the matter is, there was never any real effort to have mature titles on the 'Cube by Nintendo. If there was, then they wouldn't have made all the massive f*ckups that they did (like the purple color, shape, statements about neutrality). The games you listed are great, beautiful, and a step in the right direction, but they are spaced far apart. Getting rid of Rare and SK and 'cramping their style'/micromanaging (ala Michael Eisner? Probably not that bad) didn't help either.

Plus, the blockbusters are more 'everyone-games' than '17+games' in terms of content(except Geist), though not necessarily difficulty or skill. What needs to happen is that after the release of Metroid Prime 3, Retro getting back to those early abandoned projects from before the restructuring and layoff Nintendo IPs for a bit. That'll help a little bit, but what is really needed is steady third-party support. I think Nintendo has worked on alot of its image problems in terms of the design of the console, and having MP3 and Zelda at launch couldn't hurt that image. But those games alone aren't enough to compete.

People who live for M-rated games can't wait on Nintendo to bring them, which is why third-party devs who make those kind of games are so crucial.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: DS LITE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED

How soon do you guys think the GBA will be phased out after this? I figure I'm gonna pick up one of the new SPs right before they run out (im thinkin for fifty bucks.)

Good thing I held off for so long on the DS; now I know I won't be getting one till the Lite comes out. Whoever said the early bird catches the worm did NOT have this in mind, methinks.

Notice how similar it looks to the RevMote. Good move to standardardize the 'look and feel'. Both of them feel very 'iPod' right now.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The Power of 2X to 3X...

Theperm, how could a triple-core IBM (which isn't even considered to be a PPC) be considered even remotely 'general'? It seems something too naive for Microsoft to do, having already survived one hardware generation.

Ceric - today's computers have a hard time doing any sort of 3D emulation, period. The Rev, which will almost certainly be less powerful than my computer, will be able to emulate the n64 better than my desktop ever will, because Nintendo knows everything about the innards of the 64 and we simply don't. So that comparison is hardly valid.

I agree though, that the Rev will be specialized. There's alot we don't know. How will the complexity of the controller affect CPU/GPU usage? and other questions of the sort. Doubtless we'll find out more at GDC...

I never much liked Jack, Walt, or even Michael - I'm a big fan of Jin and Hurley though, they need to get back in the action.

« on: January 18, 2006, 04:47:00 PM »
Yeah, it would basically be piontless for games not to come on DVD9s as all drives read them, and the Rev's drive is no exception. It's the quickest, most convenient solution for everyone - third parties have worked with DVD9s for ages, they're cheap as hell, etc. etc.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Capcom working on Revolution
« on: January 18, 2006, 04:00:09 PM »
The visuals in RE didn't freak me out that much - it's the sound that really does it. (Yo voy a matar! Morir es vivir! Morir es vivir!)

Anyways, I'm not going to get my hopes up about anything just yet - on the Cube, devs had a tendency to overpromise and underdeliver. Besides a simple statement like 'Capcom is developing for Rev' or 'we might get next RE' should be expected...why the hell WOULDN'T any of the major Japanese devs (at least those that haven't taken money hats) develop for the Rev? This isn't really news in my book, especially considering that he's worked with Nintendo before with Minish Cap.

Now, if we had some comments from Western devs that aren't EA (LucasArts, Rockstar, SK, Monolith, the list goes on...) other than the usual "We're very intrigued with the controller", then THAT would be real news...and I'm afraid we're not getting that before March/GDC.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Revolution launches in November
« on: January 18, 2006, 03:58:20 PM »
Yeah, isn't that weird? 1996 doesn't feel like it was so long ago - 18yrs have I walked this Earth.

Anyways, like I said, not surprised...I hope Zelda isn't delayed to coincide with Rev launch though.

I'm not really surprised; when was the last time Nintendo didn't launch in november? the 64, and that was ten years ago (which is retarted. Makes me feel old. Toy Story is also 10 yrs old, which is doubly weird.)

Yeah, NSTC is the state-side dev, but they haven't done much besides translations, Wave Race and 1080, methinks.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: too many good games
« on: January 15, 2006, 02:03:46 PM »
Said one little thing, and the whole thread got derailed. Anyways, I'm sure the Rev will have it's fair share of greatness outside of Nintendo - I just don't think we're gonna get a real peek/any real information about them before GDC.

Bah. On MLK day? Everyone has off...unless this is announcement is from NCL or NOE, that is. Anyways, I don't put much stock in any rumored 'announcements' before GDC, if then.

« on: January 13, 2006, 10:21:47 AM »
This shouldn't be news. OF COURSE third parties will have launch titles, it's common sense. Nintendo can't launch with just two games; this isn't the N64.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:putting things together.....

This post along with strell's proves to me that we have to all calm down a bit and start to ignore the Sony fanboys, who will never be convinced anyway. ThePerm, you know all that stuff - what satisfaction do you get by posting it here? There aren't many Sony trolls or graphics whores on this forum anyways. Aight, wtvr, there doesn't have to be method to our madness, or else we probably would have stopped coming here long ago.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Main Menu....
« on: January 11, 2006, 07:54:06 PM »
I believe the cube bootup screen was alright. There wasn't really much to do with the interface,, other than manage saves, set the clock, screen positioning, etc. so it was boring to play around with. No with the rev, there's gonna be all sorts of crazy stuff to modify, methinks. Who knows, maybe Nintendo will make the whole interface skinnable, and then sell new skins online (i figure 99 cents to 2 dollars is ok)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo conducts "Virtual Console" service survey?
« on: January 11, 2006, 05:50:18 PM »
I don't think they should go all out with the Virtual Console games right off the bat, though there should be a fair selection. We don't need old games competing with Rev games.

Godspeed to the man, real shame that he's leaving...I'd probably be more concerned, though, if it were Reggie leaving. We need a go-to guy like that.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo invented what!?!?
« on: January 10, 2006, 04:25:10 PM »
Strell - so why is all that against what I said? Your biggest concern is with public opinion being decieved by the Sony PR machine, not with the fact that they implemented Nintendo's ideas. The public, unfortunately, are sheep when it comes to crediting innovations to the right outfit. Shame really.

As for the PSP-PS2 link thing - I really don't know too much about it, just some conjecture to try to explain why public opinion might be with Sony. I agree that Nintendo has transcended the whole GBA-GC link thing and setting things aright with the DS.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo invented what!?!?
« on: January 10, 2006, 09:03:34 AM »
Fine, Strell, you should make it clear that you are angry at Sony not for introducing the whole Dual Stick thing, but that Sony fanboys (and probably Sony themselves) make a big deal out of something that isn't such a big deal. I don't doubt that if the Rev interface is successful, that it will be stolen, but as I said in my previous post, that's the way the business world works, and it would be folly not to copy them. You can't blame them for that. You can blame them for the overhyping of what's essentially the same or at best, in your eyes, incrementally improved product (and many argue the benefits of dual-analog, but I'm not getting into that fight.)

Maybe the PSP-PS2 link has better execution than the GBA-GC link. I thought the GBA-GC link was a great concept that wasn't executed correctly at all. And Sony isn't billing the PSP-PS2 link as an alternative to online play, which is what brought Nintendo a heap of backlash. And if Sony does the same mistakes as Nintendo did with the GBA-GC link (everyone has to buy a couple of link cables, compatible games, etc, etc) then the idea will probably tank anyways.

So, Strell, it seems like your complaints are toward Sony fanboys and PR guys like Kaz Hirai for overhyping, not for Sony implementing the ideas themselves.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: No Revolution loving from the analysts.

Any sort of holographic disc is both years away and pointless right now, because it hasn't mustered any support - IE it has no content, and without compelling content, the format has no reason to exist. And god, how many times have we heard the old holographic disc story? I remember the first announcements from the now defunct Constellation3D almost five years ago, and still we have nothing. It's a pipe dream fellas...for now.

Heck, even HD-DVD and Blu-Ray can be disposed of. Not enough people have HDTVs, and not many are content to watching on a usually-small computer monitor. DVD is gonna remain the standard until NTSC has been phased out for good, and that is still a long ways off. I'm sort of pissed off, too - DVD+/-R DL media will NEVER get cheap now, and damn it, I'm sick of SL already.
