TalkBack / RE: Nintendo World Store Showing E3 Press Conference
« on: May 01, 2006, 07:35:50 PM »
NICE! All my finals are this week (Wed and Thurs!). Ah, totally awesome way to start summer break.

177
I actually did e-mail them about it, got the standard rep response...honestly, I'm used to the name already, I'm just worried about the rxns it'll get. wtvr...this is boring, that's why I wanted to restart speculation on what the systems hidden feature is...

178
Notice how recently, Wii developers have been very ambiguous about online features?
I figure they're all still NDA'd for some reason or other. Now, we KNOW Nintendo is committed to online with Rev outside of the VC. There's no way these features won't exist. So what is so special about online play that the details about it are still being held back?

Hmm...is there any potential for a revolutionary feature in the online field...I feel like it's all been done, but now, with all the news we're getting, it seems as if this is the missing piece of the puzzle, while everyone's distracted by the various other announcements.

GRRRH NINTENDO IS TEH DOOMED>!&#(%*#$&.
First reaction was they took the F out of WiFi. Besides all the awkwardness, I don't like that it's only 1 syllable and not abbreviatable.
The fact is, they should have just stuck with Revolution, just like they stuck with DS. I expected them to regardless of what their statements said. This isn't a dealbreaker for me, but NoA marketing must be pissed right now...

It's sad how they completely ignore the only Rev game anyone knows anything substantial about (that being Red Steel.) And they claim they've spoken to devs...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:One of your most anticipated E3s?
« on: April 24, 2006, 03:56:35 AM »
Ay...this is the first really exciting E3 since 2001, duh. That time, Nintendo stole the show, and if they play their cards right, they might just do it again. Handheld launches, GBASP/DS can't generate the same buzz as a full-fledged next-gen system launch...and with both Nintendo and Sony unveiling, it seems like we'll be getting the real deal...

I've never heard of "The Escapist" before...this is "Edge" quality stuff, except it doesn't cost $150+ for delivery every year.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: FIRST REV SCREENSHOT SCANS!!!!!
« on: April 07, 2006, 01:45:38 PM »
Yay! an actual game!

Thank G-d, I was going insane in that stupid specs thread.
This is intriguing to say the least. Graphics looked pretty pimpin'. Even if it is a light-gun style game, I haven't played one of those in years, and it may well be more fun than a traditional FPS. And if it has sword elements...
If this is hyped enough, it may well be one of the killer apps at launch.
Did they say if it's online?  That would seal the deal...

So this mag is on sale now? Screw the scans, I'll just buy it outright...cheap enough to strain my eyes, I am not.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: IGN Leaks Some Rev Specs Again! 3/29/06

CapAmerica and the rest of you who are spewing Apple's PR on the G3, please stop. The comments are irrelevant and outdated, as all three consoles are now based, in some way, on PowerPC architecture.

It is useless to talk about this stuff right now. E3 is in two months, by then, we should have our info, unless Nintendo goes completely mental. In any case, I don't give a crap about specs anymre, I just wanna have a good time. I'm outa here.

Ditz, Ian's point is that Nintendo's mistakes were way more outlandish and debilitating than the competition's. That, and they made a shitload more of them.

Sure, Microsoft subsidized their hardware, but for a first time player to outsell, even by a little, an established market leader in its first generation (Nintendo) in the most important market in the world! You can't brush that aside. Microsoft could afford to subsidize it's hardware, can you really hold that against him when the result was (arguably) easier to develop for? The fact that they were losing money didn't matter to the gamer buying the hardware, and honestly that's all you need to care about. (Nintendo's case is different, of course, they don't have $40bb+ USD in the bank).

As for Sony's mistakes - pissing off developers with cruddy initial devkits, lackluster launch (remember the ign PS2 vs. DC video? I still might have it somewhere around here), no HDD and no service comparable to Xbox Live - they were arguably more than offset by their being the market leader and having more games that appeal to more people.

Nintendo, however, didn't have that Microsoft's luxury of money or Sony's luxury of being market leader. They could not afford to screw anything up, but did anyway. Sure, they did some things right, like get closer to third parties, switch to disc media, etc.

But it simply wasn't enough for them to make significant market share inroads. Stupid problems like:

1.Failing to market big games (especially Rogue Leader at launch)
2.Having a flagship color that would have gone over well in ancient Rome but nowhere else.
3.Launching with memory cards that were rendered useless for some (sports games)
4.Promoting sparkling innovationy (though useful) links(GC-GBA, LAN) as a (percieved) replacement of online support
5.Lack of many compelling third-party exclusives (the deals fell through, and when they did, they wren't succesful because of problem #1.
6.Lack of demo disks
7.Stupid placement of Z button and no corresponding 'Z2', making it have less buttons than the competition and leading to some inferior ports.
8.To an extent, lack of DVD playback (I don't think this was too key).
9. Serious game droughts that none of the other consoles had to suffer. No excuses for this one.

And no, SSBM 3weeks after launch is not a valid argument. That the game didn't come out at launch and was not the flagship launch title (Rogue Leader/Luigi) was appalling. The fact that it remains to the this day the most sold game on the system, and was never topped by anything (not even Zelda, Mario, or Metroid) is also unfortunate.

None of Sony's or Microsoft's mistakes were this wide-ranging or egregious.

And fanboys: don't think Nintendo is blind to all this (especially not NOA). The Rev fixes alot of these idiocies - we now have online in a big way, the console is modeled after one of the most successful pieces of electronics of the new millennium, memory cards are a non-issue, demos could and prolly will be downloads, controller is a complete wild card (in a good way). We're even getting DVD playback.

May not be perfect, but shows that they aren't in a complete bubble, like in the beginning of the GC era. Who knows? Maybe the advertising'll get back on track too.

GC tunes...I'm afraid you're gonna have to track down the soundtracks of those. For something popular like maybe Wind Waker/Smash Bros this won't be so hard, but F-Zero, for example, is a lot more esoteric.

Umm...north_unknown - that rendition of Gerudo Valley was pretty cool btw. That song was soooo good. That's another hope I have for Zelda:TP - that the music gets alot better than the WW stuff (still good, but a step back from Ocarina)

What about Gerudo Valley, from Ocarina? That shouldn't be too difficult to do, and it's really catchy. Or, if that's too esoteric, you could just do one big 'Ocarina medley' song, from all the areas.

OK. Here's my statement, based on skimming the thread.

We have stop inserting these irrelevant Intel vs. AMD comparisons to uphold Nintendo, since the differences between AMD and Intel philosophy isn't really analogous to the whole 'RISC' vs. 'CISC' thing. In any case, much of the RISC vs. CISC thing was spewed out by Apple's marketing corps, and now with the Intel switch, we are finding out just how far those fabrications went, especially with the G4 but even with the G5. So let's just stop with that nonsense, because none of us can really debate about it (we have to rely on Anandtech or Tom's or whatever - certainly not 'Macworld').

Also, irrelevant - pointing out how PCs with higher clocks than the GC couldn't even run DC-calibur graphics. There's so much more to consider, because PCs aren't built with gaming in mind, and they have to run a friggin' OS (and that OS is usually Windows...). Game consoles, even multi-purpose ones like the Xbox/360 and PS2/3, are designed around gaming (in comparison with generic PCs).

Still Dirk's reasoning is wrong:
Quote

I really don't get it. If those numbers turn out to be true, regardless of the architecture, it's basically an Xbox.

Dude, the GameCube was in many respects (though obviously not all) as powerful as the Xbox. If the Rev has spec'ed up as much as they claim, it should blow the Xbox out of the water in terms of graphics. In any case, nobody knows specs or what they mean - I don't think anyone, besides idiotic fanboys and probably some of the inane 'hardware dudes', will know or care what they are. I'm not just talking about non-gamers - casual gamers are usually clueless to this BS.

As for your other comments about Matt - cut the dude some slack. What he (and Nintendo) mean is that they Nintendo isn't going to compete as far as cutthroat graphical ability is concerned. I'm pretty sure that when Iwata was asked recently about what Microsoft had done wrong with the 360 launch, he said explicitly that he wouldn't point it out because it would be helping the enemy. As to whether this is the correct strategy or not to take (regarding the graphics) only time will tell. But don't presume to say that noone will buy a Rev because 'it's an Xbox.' You're only focusing on one aspect, and are furthermore comparing Apples to Oranges.

In any case, it's quite possible the numbers aren't final (if they're even real). I remember the GC specs were changed at the last minute also (PPC was spec'ed up 80MHz, Flipper was spec'ed down 40Mhz)

I just started watching Season 1, and I was taken aback by how much better the show used to be. Jack isn't mechanical, not every line is related to some tech-jargon issue. The personal side is executed much, much better, Jack's lines are more human and less "barking-copish" - not even the Marwan thing last season doesn't come close (keep in mind that I haven't seen past the fifth episode of Season 1, all of Season 4 and 5 to this pt.)

Hmm...I feel like webbrowsing on a TV is pointless, unless that TV is HD (which the rev can't do) or the text is ridiculously big. Ah well, a feature's a feature, no complaints.

Nintendo buying Take Two...maybe for 2K Sports, but no...I don't even think I'd do it for that. The company, other than GTA (even including GTA, since Hot Coffee) seems to be a sinking ship, ppl are very gloom and doom about them right now. (And I don't think Sid Meier's enough. Besides, has Nintendo EVER actually bought a developer the size of Take Two? Those dudes are mammoth.)

And yes, in retrospect, Ico vs. Zelda was a stupid comparison, scratch that. The fact remains that Sony offers more variety than Nintendo does - Ico just popped in my head for some reason. I'm talking about sheer numbers here, not one really great game (say like Resident Evil, which didn't pan out because of Capcom's idiocy). They may not do Nintendo-style games as well as Nintendo, but the sheer numbers seem to offset that. One RRBG, like ResEvil, doesn't seem to work for them.

You're right mantidor - a couple of mature games alone don't ensure a system's success. There needs to be variety, and I think we all know that, in comparison with the competition (and especially in the last two years), there hasn't been enough variety on the Cube. PS2 had the edgy Jak, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper to combat the Mario platformer, of which we only got one, and Ico (among others) to offset Zelda. But the Cube had nothing to counterpoint Halo (as a multiplayer FPS, not a general multiplayer) or GTA (to pick just one game, cuz there are SO MANY) on PS2. The mature games happen to be the ones generally lacking for Nintendo's lineup. There seems to be no similar lack on the my post is a train wreck/Sony side concerning Nintendo's 'everyone' games, which are again covered not by one big title, but by a couple of smaller ones.

----
[devil's advocate]
Despite all this, the Cube only sold about a million, a million and a half less than the Xbox in the US and clobbered it in Japan. Unless they really f*ck this one up, there's nowhere to go but up, especially with the ridiculously bad worldwide launch by my post is a train wreck.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Forbes: Kaplan Interview

Thank you BigJim, for such a concise debunking of the tendopologits.

Nintendo is profitable only because of the portable market, the DS and the GBA. If we looked at profitability only of the Cube, I don't doubt that we'd see much smaller margins, if any at all. Not so long ago Iwata was blaming slow GC sales for lower profit.

So don't say that market share or image don't matter to the bottom line; when push comes to shove, they do.
Meanwhile, as fans, we should not have to care about profitability - if it doesn't bring in a diverse base of games than we love, than what of it? If we are stuck with Nintendo's games, and are missing out on a ton of other cool stuff that's only on other consoles, if Nintendo is going to continue to refuse to use their over $3bn. war chest to net exclusives, if they refuse to  than what reason is there for gamers (as opposed to non-gamers) to stick with them, or to pick them and not Microsoft and Sony? So that we'll be forced to buy a Memory Card 59, and then told that third party developers are lazy for not being economical with memory(just to point out one example of how Nintendo fills out the bottom line just a bit more by screwing over their fanbase)? Surely not.

That was cathartic. Let me say that I still love Nintendo, I'm willing to give their non-gamer strategy a chance, and alot of the complaints that I listed above don't really apply so much to myself as to Microsoft and Sony fans - who will *HAVE* to be attracted to the Rev in someway in order for third parties to give the Rev significant support, let alone exclusives (unless they use the money hat, which they will not). (And I'm talking about real games, not 'nongames'.) If they don't do this, they won't be doomed - they'll just keep on being 'Nintendo', living off the GBA/DS industry as long as they can. If there comes a serious competitor in the portable market...heaven help them. (Honestly though, I don't think this is gonna happen. Everyone who tries seems to be too stupid to get it right; they don't realize that gameplay is king.)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Revolution Redesign
« on: February 03, 2006, 08:57:30 AM »
Bah, Liter bottles. I've decided that they're pointless - they get flat way too soon; unless you're on a budget or are catering or are gonna finish the day you open, 12oz/330mL cans or 12oz glass is the way to go.

ANYWAYS - yeah, Microsoft and Nintendo both messed up with their hardware designs and both have to start listening to their regional subsidiaries more, especially Nintendo. I feel like NoA has been castrated, and they were the only subsidiary with any sort of power (NoC, NoE, and NoAus have all gone out to lunch long ago, methinks.)

Also - I don't think a Rev redesign is in the works. They're standardizing all their console looks to the Rev look. Just take a look at the DS Lite - pretty much exactly the same as the RevMote. That right there tells me we're not gonna have too many changes of the Rev design, before or after launch.
