Ok, that's a bit...different.  Hope this gets all of the "new IP" people to shut their pie holes for a little while.

Thoughts?

Weird, I liked pretty much all the characters more than Aeris/Aerith.  Cloud is an awesome leading man, Barret is hilarious Stereotypical Angry Black Man, and Tifa was hot, and her history with Cloud was neat.  Cid is cool, Vincent is ridiculously bad ass (especially once he got a voice in Advent Children).  I never cared for Yuffie though.  She was just annoying.  Stealin' all mah materias. >:(  And Sephiroth is probably the most iconic RPG villain in existence.  That theme music in the final battle?  Brilliant.  The scene with him surrounded by flames?  One of the most instantly recognizable and iconic scenes in gaming.

Aerith I never cared about even in my first playthrough.  Which surprises me when i hear how some other fans were shocked and saddened by her death.  I honestly never cared.  Not that she's not a good character... just I was more interested in the other leads I suppose.

**Warning: Long and over opinionated quote to follow.**

My feelings are actually quite the opposite of yours.  Of course before I delve into my opinions on the characters I should set up the setting first.

I played this game when it first came out back in 1997.  Being an absolute huge fan of Square at the time and coming off of 3 back to back stellar RPG's (Secret of Mana in 93, Final Fantasy 6 in 94, & Chrono Trigger in 95), I was completely and utterly stoked for Final Fantasy 7.   FF7 had some huge shoes to fill when it compared to FF6 and CT, but all the screen shots (no video in the 56k days) seemed to indicate that it was going to continue the fine Square tradition of making high quality games.  Boy was I surprised.

Actually shocked is probably the better word.

It all started with Barret.  Barret was the beginning of the FF7 downward trend for me.  He hit the scene with a bunch of yelling and *gasp* cursing.  Cursing?!  That had never been done in any prior FF game.  It wasn't done for effect either, he was throwing out the profanity left and right.  Worse was that he was stomping his feet and having a tantrum like a child.  This was the most horrifyingly stereotyping and I'd ever scene and it was coming from a video game of all things.

Living in the south has taught me all I ever needed to know about stereotypes and racism.  I can't stand biggets and racists, but I've learned to accept that not everyone can treat everyone equally, no matter what color the pigment is in their skin.  But seeing this in a video game was complete blasphemy to me.  Video games had always been free of this sort of thing and FF7 put it right in my face not 5 minutes in to the game.  Where had Locke, Frog, and Edger gone off to?

Then we meet Cloud.  The one thing that always stands out about Cloud is his indifference.  The famous shoulder shrug.

Barret: The #*&^ world is in danger! Don't you give a &##@^&#?!
Cloud: *shrugs shoulders*

Ok, what?  It was like he was the living imbodiment of "Meh".  God, I hate Meh.  Ok, so the guy wants to be indifferent, fine, but this is the main character.  Would Terra, Chrono, or Cecil ever have acted like that?  (Yes I know that Cecil was a dark knight, but he never wanted to do what he was doing and quickly made an about face.)  Cloud's personality rubbed me the wrong way right out of the gate and I couldn't except his "maturation" later on in the game.  It just felt too forced.

Aeris was a throwback RPG character.  She was kind, thoughtful, and caring even if to a fault.  What was more amazing was that she did so in the dark, looming city of Midgar.  When Sephiroth killed her, it was like he was killing all that was great from the older SNES era RPG's.  It was like a passing of the torch from the old generation to the new.  He may as well flipped off the camera in the process.  I could almost hear Square saying, "get used to it, this is how the world is now and what you need to expect from the future."

To me, Tifa was the T&A needed to make the series darker and edgier.  Stand her next to Aeris in pictures to see what I mean.  Mid drift shirt, huge rack, mini skirt, and the ability to use martial arts to increase the chances of "accidental" panty shots.  Ugh.  Had this game come out a few years later, I guarantee she would have had either a eyebrow, belly button, or nose piercing.  Not that she needed them, but to make her character design that much edgier.  She looks rather common place by today's standards, but for 1997, she really stood out.  Maybe that was the point.  Meh, *Cloud shrug*

Cid was a complete and total bastard.  I hated him more than any other character in the game.  What a complete dick.  The cursing, the chain smoking, and much worse than that the verbal abuse he gave to Shera.  You may as well have thrown a wife beater on this guy, because he was grade a trailer park trash.  Most of the time, I never put him in my party.  When I did, I always equipped him with the "Guard" materia in order to make him sacrifice himself to protect the others.  This was completely against his persona and brought me great joy.   ;D

Yuffie was a throw away character for me.  She reminded me a lot of Robot, Yang, or Setzer.  I could have done with or without them.  Meh.  *Cloud shrug*

Vincent was a total emo/dark badass that just needed a hug.  Again, being a secondary back up character with no worth while attributes or personalities, I could have taken or left him.  I heard he was fleshed out a little more in other game iterations, but I don't know.  Meh? *Cloud shrug*

Red XIII and Cait Sith were the equivalent of Mog and Umaro to me.  Characters that weren't human and didn't play a big role in the grand scheme of things.  I hardly ever used Cait Sith, although Red XIII did get some play time from me.  In the end, you guessed it, Meh. *Cloud shrug*

Then their was the gameplay itself.  Materia's were basically like espers, so that was cool.  But what was with the summons?  I get it that we had never seen dramatic camera shifting in RPG's to this point and they were very cool, but unskippable?!  Even the most dedicated and hardcore FF7 fan would have to admit that they would skip the KOTR animation after seeing it two or three times.  You could get up and get a drink from the kitchen before that thing finished.  It took forever.

Speaking of forever, can you say load times?  I know, I know it was 1997 and CD readers weren't that fast.  The average load time for each battle was around 10-12 seconds compared to 3-4 seconds for FF6 and CT.  Cartridge vs CD right?  So, why not compensate by removing random encounters with real time avoidable ones, ala Chrono Trigger?  Give the players the choice of whether they want to fight or not.  To grind or not to grind, that is the question.  I think it was poor planning on the game designers part.  If you know that you're going to have slow load times, compensate in some other way.  You can't control the hardware, but you can change the game.  Random battles only came about due to hardware constraints of the past, which are no longer a problem today.  The encounters should have been similar to the way Tales of Symphonia handled them.  Big monsters on the map, that if touched, started combat.  Heck, they did that in Zelda II on the NES.

Finally, the ending.  More specifically the final battle.  I recall having to put in disc three just before the final fight with Sephiroth.  It wasn't until about halfway through the fight that I realized that this was the end.  Not the end, but the end end.  You know how the bosses in all RPG's have like three forms.  I was fairly certain that I'd fight Seph, beat him and then he'd run away.  Ten more hours of gameplay would follow.  I mean, why not?  I just started disc three.  It was around the time he blew up Saturn for the third time that I thought this fight was a bit over the top to be just another fight.  Of course, seeing as how I hadn't acquired KOTR, the fight was taking the better part of an hour to complete.  Hmmm....maybe the epic music in the background should have been another dead giveaway.

Anyways, he dies, I watch the ending, don't understand a single thing that just happened and the game ends.  I vaguely remember Red XIII in the ending CG or something, but I was so fed up with the game at that point, I just didn't care anymore.

Final Fantasy 7 had just become the single greatest disappointment in my view of Square.  It introduced the western world to RPG's yes, but it also brought with it a heap of baggage which is still used today.

The next 5-7 years would make sure that no game play was ever shown in a commercial, it was all cut scenes and CGI.  Our heroes would "evolve" into darker, less caring characters.  Cursing and over the top violence would become common place.  New gamers would now use FF7 as the starting point of their RPG experiences and shun and laugh at the RPG's of the past.  Never giving them a second look because they were to "childish" or had awful graphics and sound.

A lot of my opinions stem from my personality and the way I grew up.  I always like the leader type as opposed to the anti hero personality.  Give me Luke over Han.  Leonardo over Raphael.  Cyclops over Wolverine.  Goku over Vegeta.  Edger over Sabin.

There was no one over Cloud.  Aeris came the closet to that, but she got offed at the end of disc one.  If it wasn't for my roommate lying to me about getting her back, I would have returned that game the next day.  He literally talked me out of it and I refuse to let him live that down to this day.

The world changes and evolves, I get that.  I certainly don't want every game I play to be cut from the same mold.  Now I think that the gaming industry is almost to the point that games are turning into a different direction.  There will always be blood and guts, over the top cut scenes, sex, and anti heroes, but maybe they won't be the focal point anymore.

Anyways, that is why (in an overblown lecture) I hate and continue to dislike FF7.  If you actually read the whole thing, I commend you.  You deserve an 8-bit reward:

The worst box art offender ever (seriously, EVER) is the North American Ico box. What the hell was Sony thinking?

The PAL box art for RE4 is also significantly more super-awesome than the NA ones.

Wow, you are so right.  Check it:

Hopefully it will release at $40 although I doubt it.  In fact, how come more games just don't release at $40?  Mad profits and development costs I suppose.

God I hated FF7.

The only decent character, Aeris, dies and I can't revive her even though I've got like 99 Pheonix Downs.  It's kind of like how Optimus Prime dies from a stomach wound in the animated Transformers movie, but Ultramagnus can get blown into itty bitty pieces and they can fix him right up.   ???

The only reason I kept playing because my roommate told me that I would see her again.  I get to the end and see her face at the last screen.  He was laughing his ass off.  "What?  Didn't you see her?!"

That being said, the game got traded-in the next morning.

« on: July 04, 2008, 11:43:23 PM »

Neversoft is really pushing the boundaries on the music genre, and GH:WT will have everything RB2 will have and more (music creator ftw!). THIS is a prime example of why competition is good, you guys.

I agree that competition is good, but I'm increasingly worried about exclusivity inside of exclusivity.  It's bad enough that we segment the gaming world into 3 groups (ps3, 360, and wii), but then to cut them up further (RB/GH) just makes it all the worse.

I felt sick to my stomach when I read that RB:Aerosmith was being released and that all Aerosmith songs were going exclusive to GH.  I only own RB, so how am I going to play my Aerosmith songs?  Am I going to have to worry about Activision and Harmonix dropping sick amounts of money on to bands for exclusivity rights from now on?

How come Activision isn't letting you carry over DLC from prior GH games into GH:WT?  Is it because they don't want to add parts for the other instruments?  If so, that's just plain weak.  They should include the option to play the song with guitars only or download the "full band" version for like a dollar more or something.  Sure people would complain, but at least the option would be there.

Finally, I'm not a big fan of the music creator because it lacks vocals.  I'm usual the vocals guy and might as well just fire up the DS while my buddies enjoy jamming out to our latest creation.  Without vocals there isn't a lot of point in creating a song at all, well, except for old school 8 bit Nintendo music.  :)  I suppose we will have vocal support in next years edition.

Hey, why was Itagaki puking a few comics back?
Cause there was no punchline.

That and he always seems completely drunk in all of his pictures/interviews that I've seen.  Figured he may as well let it all out finally.

Um...wow?  I don't know what to think.  Being a huge fan of fighting games, I'm at least interested.  Konami doesn't have an impressive track record making fighting games, so we'll just have to sit back and see.  To be honest though, I really wouldn't want a 3D Castlevania game anyway.  Make the next Castlevania game for the WiiWare instead.

don't use sixaxis... just go with "palindrome"

Egad a base tone denotes a bad age.

I actually had to think about that for a second.  I'm thinking I'll stick with Sixaxis though.

I want a writing credit.  ;)

But of course!  :P

I came up with a new one for the Wii list: Port.  I'm thinking I'll replace Developers with that one.  Also, the comic is getting delayed by two weeks now, so it won't show up until the second Monday of July (the 14th).  Stupid schedules.  At least I have more time to get this tweaked just right.

Wow, does it really say that?  I thought NWR had cut that **** out.  I typed K-I-D-D-I-E.

I was wondering what that meant.

ps3:  mortgage, rent, Haze, Lair, Killzone, sales, lies

I LOL'd at lies.

I'm assuming friend codes isn't eligible for Wii.  That's a shame.

There has to be a way.  Just think it over a bit.

Since it's not that big of a deal, I'll go ahead and list the words I'm planning on using for the comic:

Wii: Graphics, Online, Waggle, Storage, Casual, Available, Developers
*Perhaps better wording for Storage (Lack of Hard Drive), Casual (Hardcore instead?), and Developers (3rd party support)

360: RRoD, Japan, HD-DVD, Wi-Fi, Service, Reliable, Microtransactions
*Not sold on Wi-Fi

PS3: Cost, Install, Tilt, Rumble, 1st-Party, Profit, Crabs
*Eliminate Tilt and/or Rumble maybe? Better wording for 1st Party? Eliminate it?

What do ya' think so far? I'm flexible on changing this list around to maximize humor.  Thanks again for the suggestions.

Wii:  I am a terrible poaster. , Waggle, FarCry
PS3:  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiige-Racer, Giant, Enemy, Crab, Install

Oh, Install.  Very nice.

Try and avoid making sentences with your words though.  Trying to find a single word to sum up the "Giant enemy crab/strike weak spot for massive damage" thing has proven challenging.

Hey guys,

As you may or may not know, some friends and I have a weekly web-comic.  The comic for next week is going to be an homage to the late, great George Carlin.  One of George's more popular acts was to entitled, "Seven words you can never say on television."  Our upcoming comic will play on that theme with a small twist.  The twist is where I need your help.

I'm looking for the "Seven words you can never say about the PS3/Xbox360/Wii"  That will end up being 7 words for each system and not 7 describing all three systems.  I've already come up with a list of words for each console and am looking for some extra input from outside sources.  If you guys want to help, just post up your words like so:

Wii - blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
360 - blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
PS3 - blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

Make sure that they are single words only.  The words should also be negative in meaning.  I wouldn't use "Blu-Ray" as a PS3 word, because that is actually an advantage.  Now the word "Cost" or "Expensive" would be a good fit.  I'll be checking back on this until late Saturday.  Thanks to all who help out.

On an unrelated note, I have a question about pins.  Is there any reason for me to stock pile the regular attack pins?  I have like 50 each of the Murasame and Sexy Beam pins.  (I used to have close to 100 each, but I had to start dumping them because I filled the stoke pile limit of 200.)  Like, am I ever going to walk into a stock and there's going to be a quest item and the merchant wants a whole ****-ton of these attack pins in exchange for it?

Not really.  During the 2nd week, the enemies drop regular pins much more frequently than the money pins.  Much later on in the game, one of the stores was selling a Jupiter of the Monkey attack pin that I hadn't seen before (I forget the name).  Anyways, they wanted like 10 of one of the earlier JofM pins as a quest trade.  Problem is, you had to have them all evolved, which I wasn't going to take the time and do.  It's up to you, but at that point, I was past the "gotta catch 'em all" collection aspect of the pins.

I looked into the manual, I know who comes next. Seems they give you worse and worse partners to increase the difficulty...

Maybe it's just me, but it seems you have to pay more attention to your partners the longer the game goes on in order to keep them alive and maximize your fusions.  Shiki was the best.  3 cards and great mobility/attacking options.  Although, I did play the game by rapid spamming left or right on the d-pad while occasionally looking up to see which side the enemy was on.  Screw all those branching attack trees.

Beat the game a few days ago and last night got the secret ending.  It was cool but not sure worth the extra time.  I could of youtube'd it really.

I beat the game a few weeks back and started unlocking the secret reports before getting bored of it.  Went to gamefaqs and read the story.  Pretty cool back story. Now I'll go Youtube the extra ending.

I too have not experienced weight loss, but I haven't been doing enough aerobics (I've heard that burning calories to lose weight is a myth). After unlocking the advanced step exercise, free step, and the advanced boxing game, doing aerobics is more fun.

My problem is that I want to do all the exercises at once in order to get the most out of them. I wouldn't feel good if I just did Yoga one day and nothing else, so I try to do a ton of yoga and a ton of strength training and some aerobics and a little bit of balance. This ends up being an hour and a half to two hours of real time (roughly 70-75 minutes of game time). That's just too much time! I can't fit that into my daily schedule. So I'm thinking about ways to break it up each day.

I'm working on creating a tracking sheet and weekly work out form which is meant to be used in a online gym setting.  Basically, everyone follows the same weekly workout routine by adjusting it to their own schedule.  I'm creating a concept behind it first, then I'll upload the forms I've created.  The goal is to have it as open sources as possible and to add/remove features as we (the online gym) see 'Fit'.  :P  Give me a few weeks to get it all straightened up, in the mean time, spread your workout into smaller bursts over more days.

I've been playing Wii Fit on and off when I can find the time and I'm losing about 2 pounds a week.

Wow, really?! 2 pounds a week?  I've been staying about even since I've had it.  What's your secret?  Are you doing additional exercising on the side?  Did you change your diet?  Inquiring minds want to know.

3+ weeks, 30+ minutes a day.  No weight loss. I have the metabolism of one of those toads that buries themselves in the mud for two years.

I've been doing 45 minutes a day and experienced no weight loss.  Although, I am a lot older (32) and I don't Wii Fit on weekends.  More importantly, I haven't made any radical changes to my diet.  That's a big step to take as well.  Finally, I haven't focused on the aerobic exercises as much and that's were you have the biggest weight loss opportunity.

I'm not sure but aren't minutes earned mostly dependent on the time you spent on it? I think I got 2 minutes for a lv1 jog once (I usually get 3).

I think you're right.  I've been tracking all of the time results to create a spread sheet to help create a weekly routine.  Actual time vs game time is a bit off, but you have to make sure to take into account the exercise selection, loading, and before/after pep talks.  Once I get everything the way I like it, I'll post it up here in case anyone wants to use it too.

I finally finished up the last two exercises I unlocked, Free run and Free step.  I did Free step yesterday and Free Run this morning.  Set the timers to 30 minutes and turned my DVD player on and started to re-watch Ranma 1/2 season 1.  :D  It's a lot easier to finish the exercises while distracted, but it still doesn't make the burn any less, especially on the Free Run.

Creating music for a future Wii Music title and a potential USB hard drive?  Hmmm...

Makes me wonder if they are planning on packaging them together.  It makes sense.  Almost all of Nintendo's big games have included something:

Wii + Wii Sports
Wii Play + Controller
Link's Crossbow Training + Zapper
Mario Kart + Wii Wheel
Wii Fit + Balance Board
Wii Music + USB Hard drive???

It could happen, as long as the price was right.  Bundling would be the way to go with it though, as selling it alone probably won't do to well.  If they can somehow get the price to a magical point, say $59.99ish, then they might make it work.  We'll see....

Has anyone else unlocked all the exercises or tried them on various difficulty levels yet?  I only ask because I'm trying to track all of the information on the exercises and create a spreadsheet with all of the pertinent information.  I've looking for minutes earned (ie. the piggy minutes) on adv/expert difficulty levels and the # of reps for said levels as well.  Thanks for any extra help and keep on being fit.

Seriously, the best genre ever made for the PC is Real-Time Strategy.  RTS titles simply cannot be done well on a console because of the very nature of the input devices.  Mouse and keyboard are essential for making the RTS genre work.

That being said, go out and buy the Starcraft: Battlechest right away.  In order to run the game you need the following:

Windows 95 or better
90 MHz Pentium
16 MB RAM
DirectX-compatible
2x CD-ROM drive
640x480 8-bit display

Trust me, best $15 you'll ever spend even if you never play the multiplayer.  The single player alone is worth the price of admission.  Of course, I'm totally biased...

I'm going to come up with a large group plan with a downloadable chart and everything for people who want to join in with me.  I would like to see all WiiFit owners on this board join in, but I'm not going to shove it down anyones throat.  I'm going to try and start the whole thing on June 16th.

In the mean time, get used to the exercises and try and unlock them all so that we will be ready to go come the 16th.  I'll lay out more information as I figure out the best way to do this properly.
