Nintendo Gaming / RE:How do you review Wii games?
« on: February 24, 2007, 03:06:47 PM »
Wii games should be judged no differently than other games. Sh*tty controls are sh*tty controls regardless of the method of imput.

Why else to do you think Microsoft would just jump in to the console space and be willing to lose 4 billion plus in the process and then release a new system after they get to a userbase

To make money in the long run. Microsoft rushed 360 to get a jump on PS3. They were probably hoping for a bigger lead with the headstart.

I'd say Sony is competing with companies like HP and Gateway more. Vaio laptops usually come with Windows (I've never seen one that didn't).

It's pretty good. I would've liked an option to play with the analog stick. Oh well.

And the voice acting is terrible... like all of them. Also, the main theme challenges the DK Rap in terms of utter crappiness. Here I thought that was impossible. "Seven rings in hand..." Kill yourself...

Wii will continue to get ports of last generation games as long as developers feel that they can make a quick buck. Sad, but true. Still, I wouldn't say it's a major problem even though it sucks. Wii will get the ass ports, but that won't be all it gets.

And for some reason, I can't seem to get the Medal of Honor trailer to work. I'm at school write now (obviously doing important college stuff), so I'll try again at home (where I will also do more important college stuff).

3rd parties just didn't have faith in Gamecube as a viable platform. Part of that was Nintendo's fault. Nintendo is really on the spot now to make sure Wii can push more than 1st party software. I don't want to jump the gun yet, but Wii is like a winner.

I don't think Capcom is necessarily abandonning their older properties (well, besides Street Fighter). They're one of the few developers that consistently attempt to create new IPs. Sure, the most successful of the bunch spawn sequels, but after those sequels, they're attempting something new again.

And Devil May Cry 3 was good but HARD. It was throw my controller at the wall in frustration hard. And that Special Edition was a bit misleading. Play as Vergil............................... after you beat the game with Dante. Ehhh..... jeez.

I got the Master Hand joke, but I still sh*t my pants when I realized that an f-ing glove was the best Hal Labs could come up with... then they one-upped themselves with "Crazy Hand" in Melee. What the hell? Seriously... what's next? Perhaps Master Third Leg.

I've said this numerous times. I'd love to see a story mode in Brawl with real bosses. I'd prefer if they came up with their own cool boss characters but bosses from the various franchises would work too. Let me fight Twinrova or Ridley or the Koopa Kids (maybe all of them at once).

I always wanted to see 8-player in Smash. I think it's possible. Melee didn't tax Gamecube hardware. There shouldn't be a problem hardware wise with Wii being more powerful. Also, LAN allows for everyone to use all GCN controllers or all Classic controllers... the camera should always show every character though.

It could work, though I still think 4 player (possibly 6) is ideal.

I don't really see it that way. I think PSP and PS3 existing in different markets changes everything.

PSP is failing mostly because no one gives a sh*t about crappier versions of console games. DS didn't pull ahead until they offered an alternative. It has the traditional style games like New Super Mario Bros. and Final Fantasy III, but it also has creative new-styled games like Nintendogs and Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.

I'm not convinced that PS3 would be getting beaten by Wii (or at least nearly as badly) if it wasn't $600. Take out the Blu-ray drive which cuts the pricetag nearly in half and PS3 would probably be sold out everywhere. The way I see it, all Sony had to do was not release a $600 console and they would've been fine.

With PS3, Sony left the door wide open. With DS, Nintendo didn't really make any huge mistakes. The first year was pretty shakey due to a lack of titles that took advantage of the hardware. Nintendo's big launch game was a slightly enhanced Super Mario 64... except that the original was built around the analog stick which DS unfortunately does not have.

The games on PS3 are coming. Nintendo just has to make sure they have a consistent flow of quality titles in a variety of genres coming to Wii by then.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Is Miyamoto Past His Prime?
« on: February 20, 2007, 05:41:33 AM »
Whether Miyamoto is past his prime is an opinion either way. He's been known for creating genres and his games have seen innumerable copycats. I haven't seen many Pikmin or Nintendogs clones. I think Miyamoto is past his prime for many reasons. However, he can still be past his prime and a good game designer. Michael Jordan was still an amazing basketball player past his prime. The "past his prime" description doesn't automatically mean "bad." That's the big misconception in this thread.

The point isn't that Nintendo is screwed without Miyamoto. Rather, it doesn't seem like Nintendo and Miyamoto is necessarily training the younger designers to create independently which could lead to titles not meeting the same quality that Nintendo is known for. When hurdles in development arise, are these designers prepared to come up with solutions without Miyamoto's help? That's the possible issue here.

Metroid is still handled by series co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto. He has supervised almost everything Metroid related, including the Prime games. I think Metroid II was more Gunpei Yokoi's work, who also happens to be Metroid's other creator. That said, I don't think Nintendo as a whole is really fostering internal up and coming designers. It strikes me as odd that Masahiro Sakurai is finally getting his shot at free reign (with Super Smash Bros. Brawl) after leaving Hal Labs.

I seen new talent emerge at many 3rd parties. For example, Tetsuya Nomura began as an artist at the lowest level, but now, he's in charge of big name titles like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy. Hironobu Sakaguchi isn't even with Square Enix anymore, but the series is as strong as ever.

At the same time, there are teams like Kojima Productions. Hideo Kojima has tried for like the last 7 years to move away from heading the Metal Gear series, but every time, his team begs him to return. That's a problem because what is that team going to do after Kojima. I think the same scenario applies at Nintendo. These people are equipped to design games, otherwise they wouldn't be working with these companies. The question is whether they can handle projects on their own and still uphold the same quality without senior members holding their hands.

I've read up on Nintendo's internal teams. The thing is that Miyamoto is still holding these younger guys by the hand. He has had free reign over his games and the opportunity to release games when they were ready. I think what many people in this thread are trying to say is that the so-called new talent don't seem to have that same freedom. They all answer to Miyamoto. Are they really being trained or have they developed an over-reliance on Miyamoto's guidance? I wonder if Eiji Aonuma can handle Zelda by himself with minimal outside imput or if he's just Miyamoto's Robin.

I keep making that same argument and people try to dismiss it when I do.

Why is that when it's so damn obvious that the PSP and PS3 have nearly all of their failings in common?

Yeah, but they exist in different markets. That's why I think it's a tough comparison; one that doesn't say that much.

PSP enjoyed some runs of success early, but anyone who understands why and how Sony took the console world by storm should have realized that they couldn't match that success in the handheld market using the same tactics. One of the reasons is that you can't sell a crappier version of Madden to the same people for triple the price and hassle (four PSPs and as many copies of the game). Why the hell would you bother with that? PSP also has ass load times and battery life - 2 major no-no's for portables.

Nintendo, with DS, displayed an immense amount of foresight. They really understood the market and understood more than anyone the need for change. You can't just offer pocket versions of console games. Otherwise, anyone can find a suitable console equivalent. That's really PSP's biggest issue. I think more people would be willing to embrace PSP if it offered something non-PS2. I wouldn't say the focus wasn't on gameplay. Rather, everything PSP could do, big brother PS2 could do better, faster, and prettier.

PSP and PS3 may have some similar negatives, but if they fail, they'll fail for different reasons. I'm not going to start a whole big debate, mostly because I don't care enough. This is just where I stand.

Instead of mentoring new talent, Miyamoto has been babysitting entire projects. Nintendo needs to start trusting their younger designers more. Miyamoto has final say on anything anyone at Nintendo makes. He's a talented game designer, but that method doesn't actually prepare Nintendo development teams in the long run. I would love to see Miyamoto settle on one or two projects to focus on while occasionally adding imput on other Nintendo titles. That's a lot different than when he'd fly to Europe to tell Rare how much they sucked then flying to Texas to tell Retro that Metroid sucked and to change this and that. He'll always be the man at Nintendo because he's set such a high standard for excellence, but someone has to be allowed to emerge at Nintendo and have the last word on their own projects. Even Eiji Aonuma, at like age 43, still seems like Miyamoto's sidekick.

At the very least, Nintendo could start hiring and/or supporting established talent who have left 3rd parties. Do something. Miyamoto isn't going to be around forever.

And he's probably past his prime. However, that doesn't mean he's not still good at what he does.

9991
Definitely.

I've said this on another board (maybe this one too). Metroid Prime 3 should be Nintendo's big mid-year game. They don't need a first person game up against Halo 3, especially since comparisons are bound to be made. Nintendo just needs a big multiplayer title, like Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's Nintendo's best selling (and arguably) best multiplayer game.

Nintendo wants to spread their titles out, but Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy should both be out by the end of the year. Galaxy in September and Brawl in November would be good timing.

Why be focusing on the single player when the multiplayer so desperately needed balancing?

I agree that multiplayer needs balancing. I'm just saying that they could focus on making both single and multiplayer excellent. Sakurai's team isn't rushed like Hal Labs was (well, as far as we know). They should have time for fine-tuning everything.

SSBM is ABOUT multiplayer: focusing on anything else is just bullsh*t.

I disagree. The single player has potential. Sure, it was pretty shallow in the first 2, but there's a lot they could do to make it more fun and give it more depth. A story mode that linked all the characters together with a real plot and tough bosses would be a good start.

The problem with Melee is that it was obviously rushed and Sakurai was pressured by Miyamoto to focus on multiplayer. Brawl hasn't been given a timeline for release. Even though everyone wants it sooner than later, I'd wait if it meant I got an all-around better game, single and multiplayer.

Anyway, I see multiplayer in Metroid Prime 3 as an extra, just like it was on Echoes. I really don't think including a possible online mode affected the progress of the main adventure. Also, the easiest way for Nintendo and Retro to have included multiplayer in Corruption would have been to hand it over to another team. NST, despite currently working on Project H.A.M.M.E.R., probably could have done a pretty good job.

I can't justify a $600 system with anything, even games I can't play anywhere else. It's a cheap Blu-Ray player though I still wouldn't pay $600 to watch movies (and I think both HD formats are set to fail). Regardless, I might not buy it at that price, but someone will. That's the point. There are a lot of people who are going to pay $600 to play FFXIII. Sony is still in this game.

Also, I think 3 consoles can co-exist if each did something different.

I agree that it's too early to be discussing the next gen. There isn't enough to go on right now. I've stated my thoughts on PS3. I'm not writing off just yet. I'm definitely unimpressed with what Sony has done this far. However, they're hanging in there. They have the 3rd parties and some really impressive games in the pipeline. Final Fantasy XIII is supposedly still set for 2007 in Japan.

Microsoft is going to have think of something new, rather than trying to one up Sony. I don't have much more to say about them. I do see them releasing a smaller, less prone to exploding 360 in the future. I think we'll see both MS and Sony back with new consoles by 2011 and I think they'll be looking to follow Nintendo's lead by trying to add create a new way to play. One of them is probably going to think it's a good idea to attempt a VR helmet....

I'm worried that Nintendo will push the successor to Wii too soon. I think they can hold off until at least late 2010, but I hope they stick to their 5 year cycle. Still, Nintendo should be able to release an HD console more powerful than either PS3 and 360 in a few years for under $300. I think at that point, Nintendo will finally get what they've always wanted: a time when graphics really don't matter. Regardless, the most exciting part about Nintendo's next console is what they're going to do with their controller. Developers have said the lack of buttons is too limiting. Is there a way for Nintendo to eliminate the classic controller yet keep its functionality? Of course, add more buttons and maybe an analog stick might help (imagine playing with 2 remotes). I think a more important question is: what else can they include to provide a more interactive experience? I think everyone wants to see how they can top themselves.
