For me, graphics aren't much of an issue, but what happens when the other consoles drop in price? It's hard to imagine the Wii's user base just abandoning it, but I think that given this possibility, the Wii will gain a sturdy lead in the first half of the generation, only to be fending off the competitors for the rest of it.
I think you are underestimating what's happening. It's not traditional gamers that are driving Wii sales, although they are being taken along as well, but the system is also appealing to a group which is either new to owning a system or had previously lost interest.
For example, in my advertising class in college, we were able to pick a product in order to build a campaign around. 6 people in the class picked video game systems. Two of them were male, myself included for the Wii and another guy was doing the PS3. The other four were all women, each doing one for the Wii, two of which had never owned a video game system prior and one had stopped playing video games since the SNES before this point.
Because of this, I do feel that Nintendo has begun to reach their goal. They have grown the market, largely thanks to Wii Sports... a game that can't really be replicated on the other consoles. Sure this might end up being a very, very casual market that ends up with only a few Wii games in the end, but I do feel that appealing to this demographic would still ensure that hardware numbers outflank both the 360 and PS3 this generation due to what the Wii has to offer.
On that opening statement, it's hard for me to be optimistic. Not to sound like a martyr or anything, but given my age, I never really saw the day that Nintendo was dominating, so the idea of them doing so now is still a little hard to believe. As for what you said about expanding the market, I absolutely agree, and if Nintendo can continue to build upon the momentum they've established, I see no reason for a major turn around to happen. They used this same sort of strategy with the DS, by expanding the market drastically with their product, they blew Sony and the PSP out of the water with a fairly weak and unattractive handheld in comparison.
One thing's for sure: If sales follow the track their currently on, Nintendo and Wii won't just win, they/it will -dominate-.
