Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii Digital Audio??
« on: August 16, 2006, 05:33:47 PM »
I have an HDTV, every console, etc, but I can't really imagine myself spending 500 dollars on a huge surround sound setup.. if you ask me it's a miracle Nintendo included all that Pro Logic stuff because few, few people actually have a huge setup.

I need the Wii version, if for no other reason, than for the 16:9 display. I'm not too upset by the lack of HD, as long as I can see the games in beautiful visual 16:9.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: When's the Wii launch date?
« on: August 15, 2006, 07:42:04 AM »
I don't think it could possibly be the 19th. Early November is the time to release a small number of consoles, creating a shortage that Nintendo can whet with a huge shipment on November 17th.

Nintendo Gaming / The Four Major Demographics, and Wii can get them
« on: August 14, 2006, 11:27:18 AM »
In my mind, there are four major demogrphics in the video game world. These demographics are all very different, and Wii may well be the first console to appeal to all four. Similarly, if forum pessimists like Ian Sane or Mario are right, Wii may fall flat like Bandai Pippin.

The first demographic is the hardcore gamer. People like the ones on this forum. The hardcore gamer loves retrogames, so the VC is a big plus. The hardcore gamer loves innovation and genres like JRPG, space shooter, and adventure, which have fallen out of favor. The Wii brings the potential to revive a lot of these genres through open and acessible development and the Wiimote brings about potential for innovation and new gameplay. The only downside is that very purist hardcore gamers may hate the Wiimote, but for them the Virtual Console may be worth the cost of entry if there are enough new titles and translated titles.

The second demographic is the softcore gamer. He is looked down upon by the hardcore gamer yet looks up at the hardcore gamer with disgust and confusion due to kitschy tastes. He asks, "PS2 or Xbox"? and reserves every Madden and NCAA game that comes out. The softcore gamer's only other real interest is FPS games like Halo. Sadly, this stupid gamer is the main demogrphic today and all the schlock that sells proves that. Wii can appeal to these people if PFS and sports games work as well on the console as we hope. This softcore has little if any appreciation for classic games, so it's unlikely Virtual Console will hold much weight for them. It all rests upon the success of games like Red Steel and Madden. If these don't turn out well, this audience is gone.

The third demographic is the casual gamer. This gamer occasionally plays a round of multiplayer with their friends, and occasionally freeware PC games. They know little about games and feel that they "contribute to a lack of focus" or something else stupid. Probably a fan of professional sports like the softcore gamer, and also a fan of  but cannot differentiate well between soft and hardcore game players. Games like Wii sports will appeal to this demographic and they may occasionally try something like Mario Galaxy. Usually has some nostalgic memories of Mario or Sonic, and annoyingly as hell refers to Genesis as "Sega" and NES as "Nintendo". Wii's success in this demographic lies completely on viral marketing success. This, more than anything else, is up to Wii the fans. We need to have people play Wii when they're at our house or whatever, and if (when) they're impressed the low price may sell them on a console.

The fourth demographic is a hell of a tough nut to crack. This is the non-gamer. This is your mom, your dad, your grandpa, your ultra-religious cousin. This demographic knows little. They need games like Wii sports and you to be there with them. Nintendo has been the first company, in my mind, to have truly succeeded with this demographic as demonstrated with Brain Age and Big Brain Academy. This non-gamer can be weened through people like us onto simple games like Wii sports and simple VC fare, and hopefully move up on their own.

If Nintendo can capture the hearts of all these demographics, Wii win. Otherwise, Wii lose. The biggest deciding factor is us, the Nintendo fans. We need to try Wii with everyone we know and watch the revolution spread. If we go out there and be proactive in lieu of Nintendo's bad marketing, for the first time in over a decade Nintendo will be the king.

Has anyone else noticed the steady increase in PSP sales in Japan? It's at over 50k per week now. HOW? A month or so ago it was selling less than 20k, what's changed? Nothing in the PSP world. It's Nintendo who are KILLING THEMSELVES by purposely undershipping DS's to build fake "sold out" hype, people are fed up with the Nintendo BS and just buying PSPs now. The paradigm shift is upon us and nothing can change that. Everyone knows the DS has the best games, but people are STILL buying PSPs. It's the general attitude of Nintendo that's scaring off consumers. Here's a tip Nintendo, people aren't going to keep buying your products for the name alone, there's no way in hell this fake strategy is going to get Wii attention, if anything it's turning more and more people away, if you look at the other system that is steadily increasing in sales, Xbox 360. The decline in Xbox 1 sales reinforces the point that people are now hopping on the Xbox 360 bandwagon, and the only people Nintendo can blame for that is themselves. Not only has this affected Nintendo but it's dragging down the entire game industry over there when people can't even get what they want, which effects the worldwide entertainment industry as a whole which pretty much makes Nintendo the central cause of all the violence and corruption  in the world. Sad times for Nintendo fans.

You have got to be kidding me. This isn't even like GCN and Xbox where it was a narrow margin. The PSP increase is solely the result of thjat #1 game, and maybe LocoRoco and a small amount of worthwhile games. As soon as they fade into memory the PSP will too. You're acting as if DS was done, yet it still outsells PSP by a 3 to 1 margin. That's way more of a lead than Genesis had on SNES even in the dark days of the '91 holiday season.

People are still buying PSPs because it's for the lowbrow softcore gamer, and while that is the major demogrphic in the US it is not in Japan or even Europe, and I assure you Nintendo will continue its total domination in the handheld market with a far more stellar lineup than PSP has to offer.

It's true. No one took Gamecube seriously. Countless -- countless people who owned an N64, especially around here got a PS2 or Xbox or both, and completely ignored Gamecube. To be perfectly honest, I'm really unsure how. JI've had countless good times with my Gamecube, far more than with PS2 or Xbox, yet everyone wrote the poor plastic block off. Look at the mass media, where Nintendo was and still is ignored. "PS2 or Xbox" remains a hot question and although my stomach churned as I typed it, it's out there. I think it had to do with a paradigm shift from quality to "cool", stuff like Halo and Madden replacing Mario and Zelda. Disgusting, yes. Undeniable, though.

Some of them act as if the little Cube doesn't exist. And unfortunately, I don't see these gamers who I label "softcore" (their interests include Madden and FPS games) coming back for Wii. Of course, I can see it somehow feasible, but that's up to us. Wii is going to be a viral machine. You can expect Nintendo to botch marketing, at least early on like they have for every system post SNES. Even if the ads are somethign to be proud of, they won't saturate the airwaves or get the name out there like Xbox did. We, the Nintendo fans need to get our friends and family to try Wii. Last night, for example, I showed Wii to a few kids, none of whom are particularly large video game enthusaists. One was particularly impressed, but the other two were all "lol id rather have a controlar than sum lightsab0r WHISH WHISH", as they swung their arms around moronically.

We need to get the fun factor of Wii out.

Er, maybe, but if the PSP is any indicator of what will happen, they'll lose those publishers, too.

Some studios scaled back but most axed UMD support entirely, saying the discs just weren't selling at all and as such they couldn't justify even bothering to make them anymore. Likewise, major retailers are either scaling back or dropping UMD, with Wal-Mart dropping them completely.

I don't see why BluRay will be any different as both BluRay and UMD have just about everything in common: they both only work on a system no one owns, they both have questionable support (and UMD support was actually better), and they're both unnecessary.

Blu-Ray is in even worse shape than Betamax was. At least Beta had better quality than did VHS, but BluRay costs more and has worse quality than HD-DVD. HD-DVD may have less room, but how many yottabytes does one movie need?

After the first few sentences, I knew it was ridiculous. If this is a mass standpoint, I am ashamed of being associated with this.

The Genesis outsold the SNES early on, and by 1993 they were neck-and-neck. By '94 SNES was the undisputed victor. N64 was the one that got trounced its whole life, and did sell less than SNES and NES. There's no merit in anything else he says, especially after skimming through a couple of his "objective analyses" on Wii games.

Smash_Brother's idea is the best thing I've heard in a while. Let's clusterfuck this kid.

So all in all would I like to see more attention tossed at the DS? YES!   Do I think what they are doing is acceptable?  EH Meh. . . .  They could do better but I am happy with what they are bringing to the table.  It is far better then what they are doing for PSP.

The things you point out are right, this is a paradigm shift underway. I think PSP is going to see the N64 effect even more quickly in its lifetime than did N64 or especially GCN, and fewer and fewer games will be announced for it.

I will also agree that they're not making as much quality stuff on PSP, but I see it as a waste of thier resources when they could be making more stellar DS games for a huge and ever-expanding fanbase.

I think my problem is that they haven't done it fast enough.

Edit: Kairon, I never wrote off a good game that's unusual. It's the PSP-ness that I condemn.

They did abandon Gmecube, but then again who didn't?

Actually, I thought that the ports of MKII were actually quite decent for each respective platform, the SNES in particular.
As far as Rampage, I really find it hard to imagine that Midway would spend so much effort on some nice looking player models, complete with specular and bump mapping, and leave the rest of the game's assets untouched. As it is, the game looks terrible with the stark contrast in quality.

The 32X port was very sloppy. The Saturn one was pretty much arcade-perfect but brought along some different issues. I've never played the SNES version but the Genesis one works for that console being so underpowered. The handheld versions were bad.

But have you really seen any brand new games from third parties that would require an obscene amount of time and money?

Currently, the PSP's bestseller is GTA: LCS. Now compare the sales of this to GTA III, Vice City, or San Andreas on Ps2 or even Xbox. And considering PSP's installed base is very similar to that of those two consoles at the time of those games coming out, you can see that the sales weren't too flattering. At that, had it been such a big success it probably wouldn't have been ported to PS2.

Similarly, some of the only good PSP games include Loco Roco, Valkyrie Profile remake, and Mega Man Powered Up.  None of these three take particularly great advantage of PSP's power. Somehow I think all three of these could have been done on DS and would have sold much, much better.

What are we even seeing from the big four Japanese devs on DS? Konami gives us our Castlevania, but other than that I'm not seeing much. Capcom hasn't done much other than Pheonix Wright (which got such a damned small run) and a few ports of Mega Man Battle Network. Namco hasn't done a damn thing other than Pac-Man sparkling innovations and the obiligitory Ridge Racer port. And Sega? They've given us another stale Sonic game and a few cel-shaded minigame collections. Not that these games were necessariyl bad, but all of these devs are supporting PSP much, much more with games that aren't really selling or getting much critical acclaim. Maybe they need to support the fanbase that wants them?

Ugh, PSP. Just when LocoRobo gets buried, we get some game that's about horses(?) tainting the charts with its PSP.

My question is why the most talented Japanese devs like Capcom, Konami, and Namco are so adamantly supporting such a platform that they have failed on time and time again.

I would consider getting it if the cost weren't driven up by having to get a Japanese game I can't play and the fact that after FFIII is no longer flavor-of-the-month it won't seem cool anymore.

I'm waiting for the cost of the import black ones to drop. Then we'll talk.

Why does Nintendo have to lose every second party?

I call Retro will be gone in good time, as will.. who's even left?

Silicon Knights, Left Field, Rare.. they all held an important role. Another loss we. don't. need. Now Golden Sun will come out for PSP and my stomach will come out of my mouth.

"SHE GOT A PSP"

"HE GOT A PSP"

"LOL THEY GOT PSPs!"

is good for this website's interest. Nor is "KICK A FIELD GOAL A WIN A PS3". Just two more things we don't need to support, amirite?

Or amirite?

Good thing FPS games are repetitive, mindless, kitschy affairs that are partly responsible for the downfall of video games.

I guess if you're an FPS fan then it sucks.

121
To begin with, I really think we need more consoles. Sega Saturn absolutely has to be there.

I saw that Atari is losing money.. what are you waiting for, Nintendo? Buy that crap, buy it now! Get all their IPs, backlog.. it would be the best thing to happen to Atari since Nolan released the VCS!

But most importantly.. I have played most of the "best of" stuff on these consoles. Super Mario World and Bonk's Adventure aren't exactly going to sell to me. I've beaten all those games a zillion times.  A translated Star Ocean, Policenauts, or Rondo of Blood will sell to me, even more than will Wii software.

So, Nintendo needs: 1) More consoles. Sega Saturn and Master System in particular. 2) New stuff. 3) Translated stuff. 4) Re-releasing old games. That'll get the attention of hardcore retrogamers like me.

I paid 10 bucks for PN03, and it was absolutely worth it. It's a niche title, by all means, by I like its old-style mentality and its sound and graphics are also quality.

I played it until I unlocked the Papillion, then realized that it's nigh impossible to beat the game without ever getting hit. Too bad we'll never see a swiiquel.

I'm saying that Nintendo should provide an option like MS does.

Allow the user to communicate with everyone (like I want to), communicate with friends (like parents want their kids to), and communicate with no one (like old people want to). In all seriousness, without communication there is little advantage to playing online over playing with bots after the "OMG REAL PPL" novelty runs out.

When Wii absolutely kills PS3 in Japan and America alike (but probably not in Europe, pompous jerks) then I have a feeling almost all these guys are going to be caught-pants down and embarassed that they supported PS3. Everyone but Itagaki, the bald, leather-wearing English teacher of the group, will jump from PS3 to Wii in an instant, leaving PS3 with a group that Sony will call "Sony Team of Dreams"

A complete twist of fate from the fifth gen.
