NWR Mafia Games / Re: Mafia 88: Hey Pikmin, Four..m A Mafia! Day 6.

So Bungle5, Wah and MASB all voted for Xander, which means I'd imagine they're all townies since I'm not sure why the mafia would be willing to sacrifice one of their own, especially when it wasn't a huge bandwagon going on.  BeautifulShy sent a message to me and Nickmitch to vote for Mop It Up, so we know the both of us are townies.  With Plugabugz being taken out by the mafia after voting TOPHATANT123, it feels like they're trying to set him up.  If TOPHATANT123 was mafia, I don't know why they'd make a move that might risk drawing attention when there's still a lot of players left.  So I'm going to imagine TOPHATANT123 is also a townie.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What will Nintendo release in 2022?
« on: February 13, 2022, 12:21:15 PM »
Anyway, ever since... I'd say Paper Mario Origami Prince they've seemingly gotten steadily more cagey with attaching release windows, and it seems like they'll have games basically done before even mentioning release dates by now.

Most of that is because of Covid making it trickier to plan ahead.  We know Japanese companies in general weren't very well prepared for letting employees work from home, and I'd imagine a company as secretive as Nintendo was even less so.  It's kind of hard to give a solid release date, if there's a chance one of your major team members test positive and cant work for 2 weeks.

It's weird that Animal Crossing is popular. It's a good thing, but I remember when the game seemed obscure. But I guess the first one did sell a million copies. Now I walk into Walmart and there is Animal Crossing Monopoly.

The first Animal Crossing was held back by being a late N64 game that never left Japan, and the second one was a Gamecube game, which also explains a lot.  Of course the N64 game sold over 500k which was really good for late N64 games in the Japanese market, and the Gamecube game did over 2 million worldwide which was really good for a Gamecube game, especially something that was pretty much a new IP in the West.

But when it finally got put on a popular system, the DS, that's when things took off.  Wild World on the DS sold over 11 million copies and New Leaf on the 3DS did close to 13 million.  The crazy thing is just how much it's exploded on the Switch.  New Horizons is already at 37 million copies and growing, which is literally one of the craziest growth in gaming history.

Of course the even crazier thing is Animal Crossing isn't the only series experiencing this kind of growth, Zelda isn't that far behind.  Before Breath of the Wild, the best selling Zelda was Twilight Princess which was over 8 million if you combined the Wii and Gamecube versions.  Now Breath of the Wild is over 27 million if you combine the Switch and Wii U versions.  Zelda is going to go from a series that could never break the 10 million barrier, to one that will break the 30 million one.

If you really want to have your mind blown, before the Switch, Mario and Pokemon were considered Nintendo's biggest franchises with the best selling Mario being the original at 40 million and the best selling Pokemon being the original Red/Blue/Green at 31 million.  By the time the Switch lifespan is over, Animal Crossing New Horizon will have sold over 40 million, surpassing the original Super Mario Bros and Breath of the Wild will have sold over 31 million, surpassing the original Pokemon.  Of course Mario will still keep his crown since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is at 43 million, and will easily cross the 50 million mark by the time the Switch is dead.  Hell, the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if that game reaches the 60 million mark or beyond.  It already has a crazy attachment rate of over 40% of the Switch 103 million userbase.  If the Switch crosses the 150 million barrier, then it's very possible Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will hit those numbers.

Of course Pokemon is no slouch either since Sword and Shield just recently surpassed the original release of Gold and Silver and is now the 2nd best selling game in it's franchise at close to 24 million.  Mario Odyssey is at 23 million which is still over 10 million more then the previous best selling 3D Mario, the 1st Galaxy game did with close to 13 million.  We also can't forget Smash Bros Ultimate which is at 27 million itself and will cross the 30 million mark in the near future as well.

This is what I mean by the Switch being on a whole different level then previous Nintendo systems.  Nintendo games have always been popular, but when put on a system that doesn't have any of the glaring issues the previous Nintendo system have had, it's become an unstoppable monster.

I beat the one that was on the Wii and remember enjoying it, even though I think it's not as good as some made it out to be.  I'll be buying this to play the second game since I'd like to see if it's an improvement over the first game.  Of course it'll be fun to replay the first game again to maybe see if I might like it better now then I did back in the late 2000's.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What will Nintendo release in 2022?
« on: February 09, 2022, 10:06:01 PM »
The big question is still whether BotW2 will be released on the Switch or if it will be saved for a successor. If it is released on Switch then I don't think there's a Switch 2 until 2024. The other big indicator would be Mario especially if a 3D Platformer were released this year close to around the time of the Mario movie. Again, I think that would put to rest the notion of Switch 2 until a couple years down the road unless Nintendo feels they have a BotW equivalent piece of software that would get a successor selling without needing to hold back Mario or Zelda. DS went about 6 years and 4 months or so before the 3DS came out. 3DS went 6 years before Switch came out. It continued for another year before sales on software really dropped. If Nintendo is thinking the Switch is a handheld and are going for 6 that years again then that puts us at 2023 but maybe they feel they can go 7, or possibly 8, years on this thing before they need to upgrade the power on it.

The Switch is on track to be Nintendo's most successful system of all time.  Nobody should be surprised if it has a longer lifespan then previous systems.  The system is about to turn 5 years old and still has yet to receive a price cut.  Breath of the Wild 2 is coming out on the Switch since it'll have close to 130 million units sold, and Breath of the Wild one will have sold over 30 million by March 2023.

Switch successor isn't coming until early 2024 at the soonest.  Even if Breath of the Wild 2 gets delayed that long, they'll still be a Switch version since Nintendo isn't going to sit on an almost guaranteed 20 million plus seller.  Unless the game ended up needing more powerful hardware to run what they want to do, but if that's the case Nintendo would have announced a Prime 4 style delay to explain why we wont see the game for several years.  Showing that trailer like they did at E3 last year pretty much guaranteed they'll release this on Switch.

I like the idea behind Mouthful Mode since this way they can create some clever gameplay challenges that you can't just cheese with certain abilities.  One of the reason why I loved the challenge rooms in Return to Dreamland because HAL has shown they can make some pretty compelling gameplay around certain abilities.  The very last DLC mode of Star Allies also was great because of needing to use certain characters to do certain parts.

Mario Strikers is my favorite Mario Sports game. However, I didn’t see Daisy in the trailer. No Daisy, no buy. Sorry. Them’s the rules.

Don't worry, I'm sure she'll show up in the "Too Hot for Miyamoto" DLC pack.

Breath of the Wild 2 will be Nintendo's big holiday title but they don't want to risk any thing similar taking attention away, so if they don't come out at least 6 months before Breath of the Wild 2, it'll be 6 months after.  This is the same reason I believe the rumored Xenoblade 3 will be a 2023 release, since I doubt Nintendo wants another one of their open world games taking any attention from Zelda and if Xenoblade 3 was going to come out in the first half of this year it would have probably been announced by now.

I know we can't get points anymore but I don't think Breath of the Wild 2 is coming out this year anymore.  If Xenoblade 3 is in September, I kind of have a hard time seeing Nintendo releasing Zelda just 2 months later.  With Xenoblade 2 selling over 2 million and showing huge growth from the previous games, Nintendo probably has hopes of the third game continuing this trend.  Even if Xenoblade 3 has great reviews and word of mouth, Breath of the Wild 2 will completely destroy all that come November.  Any talk of an open world experience on Switch will be all Zelda during the holiday and beyond, killing any legs Xenoblade 3 might have had.

My guess is the rumored Donkey Kong will probably be Nintendo's big holiday game now.  This way Xenoblade 3 will have the holiday season to itself for Switch owners wanting a massive open world experience.  Breath of the Wild 2 is probably a March 2023 title now, to celebrate the 6 year anniversary of the original.

Love that we're finally getting all these classic RPG's that never left Japan.  So many great games from that era that we can finally experience.  It's also crazy to look back and realize just how massive Square really was back in the early to mid 90's.  They were able to make so many RPG's in such a short period of time with some of them being very ambitious for their time.

This particular game I've always heard good things about so will be happy to finally try it out.

I wonder if they'll add new pictures to the gallery for beating Dread mode in under 4 hours?  If you don't get anything then I'll ignore it but if there is a reward, then I'm afraid I wont be able to control myself and will have to do it. :-[

Nice to see the NES and SNES still getting support.  I wouldn't be surprised if because of the extra income Nintendo gets from the higher price tier, we'll start to see more games like this added to the NES and SNES.

If they were willing to pay Itoi more money to get the Earthbound games, then it's a matter of time before they pay Square Enix more to get Mario RPG as well.

Well it looks like it's finally time for me to buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.  Owned the game on Wii U but never felt the need to get the Switch version since there was no new course.  Well it looks like Nintendo finally fixed.

Oh god, just thinking about the new music remixes for these stages in the Mario Kart 8 style is going to make me drool all over.

« on: February 09, 2022, 06:30:52 PM »
That looks great.  Nice to see they listened to the complaints of Xenoblade 2 and really toned down the anime fanservice.  It was pretty hard to take the story of Xenoblade 2 serious when 95% of its female characters look like porn stars and half the time it's either focusing it's camera on their breast or ass.  I mean was I suppose to be sad when watching a certain characters funeral when the game literally wants me to be staring at someones ass during the cutscene instead.

Now I'm sure Monolith Soft will still keep some skimpy outfits in their since they can't help themselves, but at least with the main cast looking respectable, the story should hopefully be more serious this time as well, instead of trying to be like a shitty anime fanservice tier story to match the crappy anime fanservice designs of the characters.

I recently played Xenoblade 2 for the first time just a few months ago so the game is still very fresh in my mind.  I really loved the gameplay, but damn was the story and characters pretty much garbage until the very end when some interesting things finally happened, but then the game ends shortly after.  So this gives me hope the characters and story will be much better this time.

There's always one big new announcement in these Directs.  Last year Splatoon 3 got announced in this Direct so I'd imagine either the rumored Xenoblade 3 or Donkey Kong might show up.  If the rumored Metroid Prime 1 remaster is true I have to imagine that will show up in this Direct as well.

As others have said, forums like this aren't as popular as they used to be.  But I would say, there are still traditional forums that do receive a lot more engagement then this place.  Why can other places keep there members engaged and even draw in a larger amount of new ones, while this place has literally dried up the last several years?

I mean, if someone was looking to sign up for a new Nintendo community and they discovered this place, why would they join these forums when most discussion is dead.  They're going to sign up at a different Nintendo forum that's actually discussing said games.  Hell, I even see members of this site post more on other forums these days, so we can't blame this place being dead on forums in general losing popularity.

Now I'm part of this problem since I barely post anymore.  I mean I could make more threads and try to spark more conversations, but then I think to myself this topic might get 3 replies max and it just doesn't feel worth the time to type something up.  We're basically in a bad spiral where we need more discussions going on to attract new members, but we kind of need new members to help spark these discussions.

What a plot twist, BeautifulShy struck me as a townie with the PMs they were sending, it was all a ruse.

If the mafia are taking themselves out one by one that's fine by me

She sent me a PM right before the game was done to vote for Mop it up.  I went for no vote since I didn't want to cause a tie which voting for Mop it up would have done at that time, since I was about to go to work and couldn't change the vote before the day was done.

At the very least I can say Mop it up is not mafia since I don't see why a mafia member would try to get me to vote out one of their own at this point when there's so many players, or cause a tie when there's no point so early on as well.

Ideally someone buys Konami. We can all agree. They used to be one of my favorite third parties, but whoever inherited/retirement funded Konami needs to replaced. I'd like Sony to buy Konami and put Kojima on the board. I would say have him become the CEO, but he already has his own company. Konami is worth about 6 billion. Which, compared to other game companies is small. There are a few over-valued tech companies in the space now.

As much as I like Metal Gear, I'd rather see an epic Goemon game. A rebooted version of Silent Hills would be nice.

Konami is the least likely to be bought since most of their money comes from non-videogame related industries in Japan.  Unless Sony really wants to own a bunch of health centers, spending over 6 billion to buy them is no where near what they gaming IP's are worth.  Especially when Konami already gutted most of their own game studio's and drove away all the top talent, it's not worth much as a gaming company since they cant develop much either.

146
The other companies in the mix are Apple, Samsung, and Google but who knows what they're going to do. As I said Meta might offer to buy Playstation off of Sony, but then what is Sony going to do? There also might be some worthwhile Chinese branded platforms in the near future.

At this point we need those other major tech companies to get involved since they'd at least put a check on Microsoft.  When competing against Nintendo and Sony, Microsoft easily dwarfs them in cash to spend.  If someone like Apple and Google get involved it would at least stop Microsoft from having free range to pick off every company that's for sale.  Even though I'm not a fan of these companies either, it'd at least keep the industry more competitive instead of letting Microsoft gain control over much of it like they currently seem bent on doing.

147
I don't think the issue is the same with MS buying Activision Blizzard.  As long as Sony is still a major player, MS is motivated to produce quality products.  The purchase is meant to boost the value of GamePass, and GamePass needs not just a volume of games but quality titles.

I also don't see this triggering anti-trust stuff because the games industry is still really big and competitive even with this happening. It seems more like a content consolidation for like-content. Microsoft and Activision made the same sort of games.

At the moment the industry is still large enough to be competitive, but for how long?  In just the last year, Microsoft has spend close to 80 billion buying both Bethesda and Activision.  That's two major third parties with decades of history and the rights to some of the biggest IP's in gaming, swallowed by Microsoft in less then a year.

What scares me is how many studio's owners or board of directors see this news and now wonder how much Microsoft would be willing to pay to buy their companies.  Yeah Nintendo will be fine since they already laughed Microsoft out of their office last time they tried to buy them, but how many others will be more then happy to sell.

The overpaying of Activision wasn't just to make it harder for Sony to buy similar third parties, but also to send the message to third parties that they can get similar paydays as well.  Sadly I can imagine too many companies being more then willing to sell to Microsoft in the coming years when Microsoft is more then happy to write blank checks to get what they want.

148
Even though I'm no fan of Activision, this is terrible news for the industry.  At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft buys EA and Ubisoft next.

They're making sure next time they pull the "no more used games and always online BS", that gamers wont have much a choice.  Anyone that thinks Microsoft has changed is delusional.  The fact they're willing to spend 70 billion to buy one of the Top 3 biggest third party publishers shows that play time is over.  All the smaller studio buyouts these last several years was already worrying, but the Bethesda buyout was a major red flag.  Well this news just confirms it's a matter of time before Microsoft owns a majority of the gaming industry.

Hopefully they'll start getting busted for anti-trust violations, but considering how much of traditional media companies like Disney have been able to buy up in their fields, I wouldn't count on it.  :-\

« on: January 09, 2022, 07:26:57 PM »
Games I played that I enjoyed, but didn't finish because either I'm not good at the genre or certain aspects frustrated me too much to bother finishing them

R-Type (I just can't beat the final fucking boss)   >:(

Vasara

Regarding R-Type, there's a really annoying trick to it: you must shoot the Force Pod into the final boss' eyeball. Keep firing and that ends him real quick. And you have to be quick, because those 1-3 tracking fireballs it sends out cannot die and will kill you at some point. One is manageable to avoid, once all three are out you may as well give up.

The issue is how to stay alive without your Pod as protection; I've only been able to do it once, with both of those little helper turrets presents, and constantly moving in a small cross pattern (very small adjustments) to draw fire to one spot, then position the turrets there to block the shots, rinse and repeat.
Once the tracking fireball comes out I switch to moving in an 8-shape to accomplish the same but keep the fireball behind me.

Yeah I've been shooting the Force Pad into the boss but I've never been able to survive until it dies.  My problem is I cant get to the final boss with both helper turrents to protect me from those green lizards that come from the top and bottom of the screen.  No matter how good I play I always seem to die in the 6th or 7th stage and lose my helpers.  Now I've gotten good enough to beat the 6th stage after losing my helpers and the 7th stage as well as long as it's before the check point in that stage.  But that still only gives me one shot at the final boss with the one helper you get before the Stage 7 boss, and I always get cheapshot by a green lizard hitting the unprotected part.

I just need to get a perfect run going one of these days.  I did get close to the end of Stage 7 once with both helpers still intact but then I accidentally crashed into a wall since I wasn't used to playing that level with upgraded speed.  I then tried to get back there without upgrading my speed but Stage 5 always kills me if I dont have 2 speed upgrades by that point.

Still, I'll go back to this game one of these days.  I just had to stop last year because I eventually got so sick of replaying the earlier levels for the hundredth time.

Luigi Dude, what did you think of Owlboy and Steam World Heist?
I have both, just wondering if I should move them up the backlog queue.

Owlboy

The pixel art is amazing and I love the look of the world.  The gameplay on the other hand is kind of a mixed bag.  Some sections are really good and the game has some great boss fights as well.  But it's also filled with tedious puzzles throughout that go on longer then they have any right too.  The game is also filled with too much story if you ask me, that gets kind of cringy at times because of how over dramatic it gets at time.  This is made worse by the fact the ending is rather anti-climatic with the story setting up something big to happen, but then it literally just ends.  It feels like the developer ran out of money to make a final boss and real ending so they just slapped together whatever they could to give it some closure.

So it's an overall decent experience with some signs of greatness here and there.  It took me less then 10 hours to beat it, so it's not a very long game.  If your looking to get some games out of your backlog it should be a pretty quick one to get through since it's easy to get through in 1-2 days.

Steam World Heist

Now this game is amazing all the way through.  Very engaging strategy game with hilarious writing and characters.  Game has a good cast of characters with unique abilities, that give you many different ways to get through each mission.  I played the game on the 2nd highest difficulty option that the game even says is the recommended level and I thought the challenge was perfect.  Lots of times I was cornered but made a comeback thanks to one well aimed shot that created an opening for one of my characters to use their special ability to save the day.  I tried to replay the game on the hardest difficulty right after beating it but the hardest setting got too much into BS territory, so that's when I stopped.  Still there's many different difficulty settings so everyone has something to choose from.  I found the second highest to be perfect, but I'd imagine there's some who might find that too hard and fight the 3rd highest the best.  Either way, this game has something for everyone.

The only negative I have with this game is I wish there were more boss fights because the few that are in were so good.  I want to say it took me around 20-30 hours to beat it, but I also did all the missions which include optional hard ones.

So this one is a longer time investment, but I'd say it's worth it.  Heavily Recommended
