Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo lost momentum
« on: September 14, 2006, 06:12:16 PM »
To be honest, Nintendo loses momentum everytime they make the slightest announcement.

Everyone is going through the shock, espeically after spending months guessing the price and launch date. I'm sure that the more they talk about Wii, show off the games and such they will likely stop caring and talk about how great the system is.

Also, if naming the console Wii did not kill the hype, which everyone and their grandmother said it would, I doubt the price of the console and the Wii sports pack in will.

-They've delayed a couple first party games to just outside the 30-day launch window, but are sure to avoid a drought in the immediate future.
-They don't have major online support at launch, but Pokemon Wii is Online in Japan in 2006, and Wii will be internet capable out of box.
-They don't have any awesome hardware surprises, but they showed some awesome Apple-slick UIs and lifestyle channels.
-Their controllers are more expensive than anticipated, but they're also more fully featured compared to a 360 or PS3 controller.
-They're launching several days after the PS3, but will have an astounding 4 million units worldwide this year.
-The VC will be online right away and we'll get 10 new VC titles every month, but it sells at XBLA prices and the Classic controller ain't included.
-Nintendo has revealed so so so much but they're still hiding in-depth news on channels, functionality of Mii, full VC details, some pricing details, and exact dates on many games.
-Nintendo's Wii Holiday 2006 is far from perfect, but neither are MS's or Sony's offerings.

Especially when compared to their competitors (Sony especially), it's hard to connect any criticism of Wii in 2006 with any predictions of material harm to their objectives. Nintendo has disappointed in plenty of small ways, but these small things are counterbalanced such that its impossible to express any real criticism on them.

Wow, I think that out of everyone that has analized the recent news, you did the best job.

I agree that Nintendo has neither destroyed their launch, but is far from perfection.

Either wait or get one for the holidays. I can't afford anything right now so getting a Wii at launch is out of the question.

What I find ironic is that the cheapest next gen console is also the most expensive Nintendo system to date.

I actually never looked at the controller issue since I never buy more than one controller (lone gamer... ), but yeah I agree that 60 dollars for a whole controller set is a rip off.

I agree with this as well. There is already a thread discussing Nintendo's pricing decisions.

I know people are annoyed by the pricing decision, but to keep it dragging in all the threads is annoying.

Why do I have the feeling that in spite of what people think of Wii sports now it might end up being a surprise hit among fans and may actually do the Wii good?

Wait, WHAT?!?!

So not only are we paying extra for a goddamn TECH DEMO, but Japan gets to forgo the tech demo and then get a free game with a 2nd controller?

I'd take it in Dec. to avoid this BS, thanks.

To be fair, the Japanese tech demo is even less of a game than WiiSports.

Is it that game that has ping pong, billiards, trivia and such?

Now that I think about it, I think some people are being a bit too bitter with this, result of the typical "shock' that comes whenever Nintendo makes a big announcement.

True, I think the system should've been cheaper, but it is still the cheapest of all the three consoles. if you can't afford it and would rather wait till the system is cheaper or a better game is released, then fine. If you can afford everything at launch, fine. It just that there is no point arguing a personal buying decision.

In my case, I can't afford the system at launch. Hell, I can't even afford a Nintendo DS game right now because a great deal of my money is going towards school projects. But I'm not that upset about it.

You either buy it at launch or don't It's as simple as that.

To be honest, the Japanese are not getting Wii sports packed in and the system costs 210 dollars. Nintendo is charging 40 bucks for Wii sports.

I think the main problem fans have is that Nintendo is pushing up the price of the Wii by forcing onto them a 40 dollar tech demo. It may be fun and may prove that the Wii is the way of the future, but it's kinda unfair to force it onto them.

I have the feeling many fans will drop plans for buying a Wii at launch, but the minute they start showing off brand new game footage, some surprising game announcements and they read impressions that greatly applaud the Wii they will change their minds and buy one at launch.

It seems that whenever they make an announcement regarding the Wii fans are dissapointed, then after a while they go back to being excited.

I just realized, if its true that Wii sports will be bundled with the console, then it confirms that Nintendo hopes that Wii sports will sell the concept of the Wiimote to the casual gamer.

The thing is that according to the japanese trailer, they also show boxing. I doubt they will sell it separately so it might also be part of Wii sports.

To be honest, I saw this coming.

Come on, guys, did you HONESTLY believe that Nintendo would launch the Wii at the end of October? To be blunt, that was nothing but a wet dream.

Think about it...

Rule dictates that a company always uses the month before a release to hype anything like crazy. If the Wii launch was indeed in october, that would have left them around 3 weeks to advertise and create national awareness of the console.

A November 19 launch would give them the time to advertise and hype the Wii like the second coming of Christ.

The way I see it, Nintendo must know that they can't hold the information any longer and they MUST spill the beans, especially with the launch near. If they keep holding the launch details back it will be a VERY stupid move.

I think Double Dash is a criminally underrated Mario Kart. I think it's actually one of the few MK that actually tried to innovate the formula by adding a second character, themed karts over the standard karts, exclusive character weapons and such.

Mario kart DS was fun, but felt like more of the same, even if it is one of the best MK games around.

And mario Kart 64 made my childhood...

Splinter Cell on the Wii will look pretty much like on the Gamecube with slight enhancements here and there.

Ubi is putting out alot of games.  Ubi put out alot of half-ass 'Cube ports.  So expect many of their Wii games to be crap.  Let's not stray away from reality here.  Just because a 3rd party is making a game for the Wii doesn't mean it will be good.  I'm not trying to be negative, but realistic.  Some of these Ubi games will be half-ass ports.

I have a feeling that Splinter Cell will be the biggest offender.  IT's just announced too late in the game and the 'Cube version ini which they are tacking on the gestures was probably no more than a half-ass port.  I hope it's not so.  But I don't have a lot of faith there.

The plastic wheel is the very definition of a sparkling innovation.  I admit it will be fun to try out and I shouldn't have compared it to a racing wheel because obviously a racing wheel is far more money (well unless you're like me and picked up the SpeedForce/pedals for $10 new)  and a real gaming wheel delivers a far better experience than the wiimote ever could in a 5 cent piece of plastic.  The way I see it is that using a 5 cent piece of plastic isn't an  upgrade to my racing experience.

I agree that not ALL third party games will be high caliber. The reality is that it's very rare for a third party game, much less a third party game to be released on all major consoles, to be console a triple A game. But all I'm saying is that the Wii getting this much third party support is a good thing that will help the console along.

Like I already told you, the NES, the GB family, the DS and the Playstation family of consoles were ripe with third party games of questionable quality, some of them being the worst ever created, but in the end what people pay attention to the most was the fact that they had a huge library of games full of variety. People sometimes look at the consoles available and the ones that pleases them the most are the ones with the huge library of games. Both the N64 and the GC had small libraries and lacked that third party support. True, the small library they had were filled with some of the best games ever but in the end to some people quantity comes first, quality second.

So all I'm saying is that seeing the Wii getting this much support from a major third party company (you can question the quality of their games, but there's no denying that Ubisoft if an important company with some history under their belt) at the beginning of the console's life is actually a good thing and may inspire other third parties to support the Wii later on.

As for the steering wheel, I admit that it isn't all that impressive but people are making too much of a deal over this. If you don't want it, just don't buy it or don't use it. It's a simple as that.

If I am not mistaken, the light gun shell planned for the Wii is that, a shell that you can connect your Wii controller  and make it act as a gun. Same deal with this, connect the controller so that it acts as a steering wheel.

So again, people are making mountains out of molehills with this. I honestly doubt this will affect the overall console and it's quality. I seldom remember a third party pheriperal that has affected the quality of a console. If that was the case, then I'm sure the NES would've died the minute R.O.B was released :p .

Yeah right.  The 'Cube versions of most Tom Clancy games by Ubi were half-ass ports.  I just don't see Ubi really taking time to do a proper Wii game with Splinter Cell.  I see that alot with other 3rd party stuff.  A couple of 'em are putting in the time.  But many are just tacking on a couple of Wiimote gestures.  I hope they understand that's the recipe for failure.

O RLY? Tell that to Sony...

In all seriousness, one of the reasons the PSone and PS2 were so successful was because they featured a HUGE library of games. True, many of them were uninspired pieces of crap, but in the end what the consumer will see is a HUGE library of games to explore, thus making the console really attractive and even worth buying.

The Gamecube library had a lot of triple A titles, but it was the lack of third party support that killed it because consumers were attracted to the PS family's library of games rather than Nintendo's handful of great games.

Also, the DS is filled with games that are made to cash in on the success of the handheld and yet that hasn't stopped the handheld from becoming a worldwide phenomenon.

The same thing happened to the NES, the SNES and the Gameboy. All of them had a massive library of games, but about a 100 of them were actually worth playing, but in the end it was the variety of games that impressed the consumers, not the quality.

So while I agree with your logic that the Wii needs top rate third party games they also need a lot of titles from the start in order to make the console more appealing to the consumer.

I admit I am not a big fan of Splinter Cell and I prefer the Metal gear series, SC is a well known franchise, and having it at launch will make it even more impressive, so I am all for it.

Then there's that steering wheel.  A 5 cent piece of plastic.  Ok it's good for a couple laughs.  But seriously I rather have a real racing wheel.  I can only wish that the game is compatible with the Logitech SpeedForce wheel I have for the 'Cube.   (Of course it won't be, but...)

I honestly don't see why you are so annoyed by this. It does look a bit silly, but it will be bundled with the game, it will work with the other racing games available at launch and it's wireless. I have to see how it works before passing judgement on it, but again this is something that will help Nintendo along.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii is so not hardcore. And you know it!
« on: September 07, 2006, 06:42:32 PM »
He doesn't seem to realize that Nintendo does NOT want to portray a hardcore image with the Wii. True, there are some games which might qualify as hardcore because the main audience interested in them are the fans (like Zelda and Metroid), but everything from the design of the console to the name portrays a light, easy breezy experience rather than the uber high tech image the XBOX 360 and the PS3.

Also, if there is something the DS Lite has shown us is that sometimes the most captivating experiences are offered by simple, unique and fun games (like Animal Crossing, Brain age and Nintendogs).

So not  being "hardcore" doesn't always mean the system will fail.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Am I screwed? Should I already have pre-ordered?

When I went to visit my friend in summer we went to a couple of Gamestops and he would always ask if they were making Wii Pre-orders and all of them said that they were not doing any pre-orders for hardware, they were only taking game pre-orders.

This was in summer, though and things may change after the press event next week. I would recommend calling the stores in your area and ask about the pre-orders.

Why do I think they will release so much here in the US? Because I think Nintendo thinks Japan is almost a synch to win and it would give Wii great publicity for most of the "megatons" to be dropped in the United States for publicity purposes.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the basic details of the Virtual console, like prices and games available at launch. Oh and maybe some details on WiiConnect 24.

I doubt they will reveal one last secret of the console, we pretty much know what the console will have.

And from the wishful thinking department, maybe an updated SSB Brawl. trailer revealing some of the new characters, including some third party ones.

- New footage of already announced games
- Some new game announcements

I don't expect anything else.
