Nintendo Gaming / Wiiconnect24 idea/question...
« on: October 11, 2006, 11:09:39 AM »
I was just talking to a friend about this...

Can Wiiconnect24 allow developers to expand and update their games when they need to or is there the demand for it? In order words, instead of releasing an expansion pack sold separately you can just download the data off the servers and update your game.

I got the idea/question fron Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix.

The problem with this is that Square is always updating their big titles with new modes, content, story and such. Not only do they only release it in Japan they charge full price for what is essentially the same game but with some new content. I want to see the new stuff, but I don't feel like paying 40 or 50 bucks for a game I already played.

My idea is this. Let's say that Square releases a Kingdom Hearts game for the Wii and they feel that they could've added more to the game. With Wiiconnect24 they can upload a new boss battle or cutscene once a month without gamers feeling gipped and they will have the opportunity to play an updated and fresh game when they boot up the Wii.

I think developers also save money by doing this. True, they still have to program the events and such, but it would be cheaper to just release the data for a price instead of manufacturing it.

So can this be done?

I'm sure Sony and MS fanboys are going to start arguments with Nintendo fanboys because the console is not graphically intensive.

The reality is that this isn't a big deal. The last console wars were won by inferior consoles and handhelds.

The NES won over the Master system
The Genesis won over the SNES
The PSone won over the N64
The GB won over the Gamegear
The DS won over the PSP
The PS2 won over both the XBOX AND the Gamecube

Hell, the Dreamcast was ages ahead of the N64 and PSone and they still won over it.

Graphical power is worth crap. The only reason the aforementioned consoles won was because they had a huge library of games that appealed to all sorts of gamers.

Also, we all knew that the Wii was going to be underpowered anyway, so why the big fuss?

Since when? Everyone seems hyped for Red Steel, except for the people who have actually played it. I hate to say this, but I'm expecting it to be nothing more than an EA Bond level shooter.

Since it was first unveiled...

Red Steel is...

1. The first major Wii title ever revealed

2. An exclusive "mature" title for a Nintendo console

3. An exclusive "mature" THIRD PARTY title for a Nintendo console

4. A new franchise from a third party created exclusive for a Nintendo console

Regardless of quality, the game will do well based on those facts. Nintendo has hyped Red Steel more than Twilight Princess or any of the other launch games and I wouldn't be surprised if the advertisement is split between Red Steel and Twilight Princess.

I'm not that excited about the game (a friend of mine is, though, and I am going to see what he thinks of it before I play it), but I expect it to be good. The way I see it, Red Steel could be like Geist. The game was flawed in some areas, but its execution and story were good enough that it won people over.

alright no more bitchin from me, especially when games like Rayman, Zelda, ExciteTruck, Red Steel, even Madden look pretty.

Just so you know, I am not a big fan of these games. The only Call of Duty game I played was the CoD 2 demo for the 360 and me and my friends were left unimpressed with Farcry (GLASS KNEES!).

All I'm saying is that people are ranting too much about a couple of games not looking fantastic, almost seeing this as a potential downfall for the Wii when in reality is not that big of a deal.

In ALL console launches there will be games that will be utter crap while others become killer APPs of their respective machines.

The same thing will happen to the Wii. Not ALL games that will come at and after launch be triple A titles and truth to be told, the best ones will come from Nintendo.

But like I said, the PSone and PS2 were filled with thousands of crappy games and it didn't destroy them. In fact, people were attracted by the fact that both consoles featured a HUGE library of games.

At least the Wii is getting that kind of support from the start. And like Omen said, we are getting games that we never thought a Nintendo console would get.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that these games are still under development. They have one more month to finish the game and they can use that to make it better. So who knows, maybe the games will be better looking by the launch.

A similar thing happened with the DS.

At launch there were VERY few games that truly showed off what the handheld could be. The third party games were enhanced GBA games with some tacked on DS features. It took nearly a year till we finally got inspired games from both Nintendo and third parties. And not the DS is not only a success, it's a worldwide phenomenon. Certainly a few bad games at launch didn't kill it.

While I too am not impressed with how third party developers are treating the Wii this isn't the end of the world. So far its only been a couple of games that look questionable in quality. The rest looks really solid. And the best is yet to come.

So don't go out preaching the end of the world because a couple of Wii games look un-polished.

Just be grateful that we are getting third party support at launch and that Nintendo isn't being nitpicky about it.

Also, both the PSone and PS2 featured some really bad games, made only to cash in on the success of the consoles yet people didn't pay much attention to it. Same with the GB, GB color and GBA.

Like I said before, moving Super Paper Mario for the Wii not only guarantees better awareness towards the game it also creates a wider game selection for the Wii right after launch.

To be honest, I am not that excited for the game but moving it to the Wii will benefit the game and the console.

Ever since Nintendo first announced that they will be creating the Revolution sometime after the end of this generation of games fans have done everything from praising the company to tearing it apart.

In this here list, I have compiled the top 5 issues regarding the release of the Wii that have caused the biggest uproar among fans. Keep in mind that this is based on what has happened since the Revolution was first announced in 2004 till Nintendo's recent press events, so other issues and complains may rise between now and the actual release of the console.

Here we go!

#5
Nothing about the Revolution at E3 2005
While both Sony and Microsoft showed off their next gen consoles, boasting everything from hardcore micro transactions to CG style graphics Nintendo showed nothing but an empty box and some promises. Even if they were playing a realistic plan rather than boast about what they don't have many fans still felt disappointed and annoyed by the "hush!" policy Nintendo loves to play at their conferences.

#4
The unveiling of the controller
Everyone was definitely expecting something special from Nintendo, but when the controller was finally unveiled at TGS 2005 many were left shocked and appalled. A controller that resembles a remote control? Even when the possibilities for immersive gaming were laid out in a neat and orderly fashion fans and even some analysts were still left annoyed by the overall design and failed to see why would this controller be "revolutionary".

#3
Final launch date revealed as well as console and controller price
Even though Nintendo has said everything fans wanted to know about the Wii at their E3 2006 press conference they still left two basic questions un-answered: the price and date. Fans were left wondering and speculating about it for nearly 5 months, but on September 14 Nintendo finally released all the launch details, including games, accessories, new features and most importantly launch date and price. The Wii will be released on November 19 2006 at the price of 250 dollars. It includes Wii sports. The controller will be priced at 40 dollars while the nun chuck attachment will be 20 dollars, raising the total controller cost to 60 dollars.

This caught many fans by surprise, as not only were they expecting the console to be around 200 dollars, the price of the controllers is too much for some. Also, some fans feel that launching right after the Playstation 3 launch might actually kill Nintendo's thunder and affect overall sales.

But time can be a cruel witch. Will fans and analyst be proven wrong as Nintendo breaks records at launch or will this be yet another mediocre move on Nintendo's behalf? Time shall tell soon...

#2
Twilight Princess on Wii/Death of Gamecube games
Ever since it was first unveiled at E3 2004 fans have been extremely anxious about playing what could be the best Zelda game ever. It boasted a dark style and storyline, something Wind waker lacked, and the fans went gaga for it like crazy. Nintendo promised it would be released Fall 2005. But suddenly, the game was delayed till March 2006 in order to add some more levels and polish the game even further. Months later, we learned that they had delayed the game once more in order to enhance it for Nintendo's new console. This spawned an anger and debate that has yet to die down across forums everywhere. Many see this as a smart move cause the Gamecube is pretty much a dead console and Twilight Princess would get ignored because of the next gen hype, and thus having it on the Wii will just create better awareness of the new console and people will eat it up. Others see this as backstabbing move towards their loyal fan base as they have been waiting forever to play the game, and yet Nintendo keeps pushing it back in favor of extras that might not make the game any better.

The release of Twilight Princess on the Wii also spawned the topic of announced GC games being cancelled and moved to the Wii, such as Super Paper Mario and DK Bongo Blast. The main reason behind the anger is because with all major GC releases being canceled, the Gamecube is pretty much dead, leaving it without a swan song of a game.

And the number one issue regarding the Wii is!!!

#1
The Wii = the final name of the Revolution
Even though Nintendo had stated more than once that the Revolution was just a code name and that it would change fans still wanted that as the final name since it stated mature gaming, it summed up Nintendo's views perfectly and it gave an overall hardcore image to Nintendo. So when Nintendo announced that the new name of the console would be the Wii, many lost control over their lower intestine.

The Wii is a play on the word "We", as in you and me. Nintendo boasts that their new console won't be just about their hardcore fans, it would be about me, you, them, your mother, your father, your sister, EVERYONE! They also stated that the Revolution might be too scary for casual gamers and thus decided to change it to something more friendly and appealing.

This was a move nearly everyone went against. It was a ridicule sounding name that would hurt Nintendo's image even further, and people went as far as to lose all hope on Nintendo. Even when E3 2006 had come and gone and fans couldn't get enough of the wee little Wii, fans were still question the power behind the new name. Even Nintendo's head developer Shigeru Miyamoto had expressed that he was not sure about the logic behind the new name.

In the end, it seemed that for now Nintendo has proved us wrong in that you can name the console "Caca Popo pee pee shire" and people would still eat it up because of its ingenious gaming design, not the game.

So there you have it! The top 5 issues that have spawned the most debate ever!

Keep in mind that this is based on what has been seen around the internet, so I may be wrong. Also, if you don't fit in any of these categories don't take offense. I know not everybody got upset the minute Nintendo said something.

Oh and feel free to add onto this list and fix/edit some of it.

This is basically Capcom once again sucking up to Sony and MS.

I mean, when it's freaking clear that the DS is a HUGE phenomenon around the world they are supporting the PSP like crazy. True, they are mostly ports, but you would think they would create ports for the most successful handheld in recent times.

I just realized this...

Everyone is talking about spending over 180 dollars on extra controllers, but outside Wii sports and Red Steel, what other game at launch boasts a fun and diverse multiplayer experience?

We don't even know if the multiplayer in Red Steel will be worth. and the multiplayer in other games don't seem to be that interesting.

What else is there in terms of multiplayer?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Sam & Max to Wii...Developers Hope So
« on: September 16, 2006, 12:02:50 AM »
If this becomes a reality it will do Nintendo a lot of good.

True, Sam and Max is a bit of an underground franchises, but if third party developers see the Wii getting a lot of varied game franchises it will just encourage them to bring their ideas and franchises over to the console, thus helping Nintendo in many, many ways.

7794
Like I mentioned in my Wii sports thread this is Nintendo giving someone else a chance in the spotlight rather than hogging it for themselves. People have accused Nintendo of milking their franchises dry (and they are still doing it), but now that they are focusing on third party exclusives and new franchises people are bicthing that they want to see more first party games based on their franchises!

Isn't the world a weird little place? :p

This is why I think after a week or two people will get over the price of the controllers and the console and just move on.

Nintendo just has this ability to shock and surprise the gaming industry, the media and the fans to the point where anything they do is a bad idea. This happened a lot back in the day, but this seems to be happening often recently, I think right around the time Iwata and Reggie came to Nintendo.

You could say that Nintendo are either the most stubborn people in the world or pure geniuses.

For example, naming the system "The Wii" was seen by everyone as the worst decision ever. Yet Nintendo did such a great job with it that people no longer make rude jokes about it and just want to play it. The Twilight Princess move is one of those decisions no one agrees on, even if logically it will be far more beneficial for Nintendo and the console. And now, we have the Wii with the supposedly free Wii sports.

I'm almost at the point where I will not criticize anything Nintendo does and just wait to see what happens because in the past few months they have proven me wrong like crazy.

The name of that game was "The Dog: Dog island". I think it's based on that line of toys and merchandise featuring extermely close up shots of various dog breeds.

I don't think that game will be as hailed and popular as Nintendogs, but could very well be the game that will hold people in until the real deal is released.

I disagree, for one reason and one reason only ... you had to have had reason to buy the Wii in the first place.  Bundling Wii Sports in makes it a great value, but there has to be something else that will make a non-gamer want to buy the machine and try it.

Of course, it could be that they're expecting that non-gamers will be exposed to Wii Sports through gamer friends, and hopefully that will get them hooked.  But it's going to take Nintendogs Wii to really bring in the masses.  In fact, I'm absolutely STUNNED that there hasn't been an announcement yet.

Rick, this type of strategy did wonders for the DS.

I'm sure that even though Nintendo did its best to advertise games like Nintendogs, Animal crossing and Brain Age, I'm sure about 80% of the people that bought those games as well as the DS found out through gamers. We tend  to know about these releases because we are always looking for info (whether it be through magazines or online), but casual gamers and non-gamers are busy doing something else. They usually find out about games through either relatives or friends. When you have a simple game they can enjoy they will be enticed to go further.

I've had friends who have no idea what a DS is, even going as far as to call it a "Gameboy". But once they play it, they become addicted and are forced to check out everything else available. And most importantly, they know its the DS, not the PSP or the Gameboy, it's the Dual screened DS. I'm sure New Super Mario Bros. and Final Fantasy III would've done well on their own, but thanks to the push by Brain Age and Nintendogs they have become smash hits. In other words, these blockbusters owe their success to the smaller, simpler games. And I have the feeling that games like SSBB, Metroid, Mario Galaxy and Wario will be successful because of Wii sports.

Once again, Nintendo made sure that Wii sports had a big presence at launch and because it has a presence and the game is solid enough it will just sell the idea behind the better much better had it been snuggled behind Zelda.

About the Nintendogs thing, I agree that considering this was the DS's biggest game ever they hadn't announced a game for the Wii (and I'm sure sooner or later they will). But thinking about it, Nintendo is always accused of milking their franchises dry. They are still doing it and hell, the biggest game at launch will be Zelda, but it also seems that they want to focus on other franchises (Rayman) and new franchises (Red Steel). Even the latest Wii trailer featured games dominated by third party franchises, with the occasional Nintendo game here and there. I think they want these franchises to grow their own legs, then move onto the tried and true.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Sports: Potential gateway drug?
« on: September 15, 2006, 07:08:47 PM »
This is something I just thought about now...

Everyone's been whining, bitching and complaining about Nintendo's decision of bundling the game with the console, supposedly raising the price of the whole thing. One of the main reasons is that some gamers don't want a tech demo.

But thinking about it, I think Wii Sports has the potential of becoming a hit and convincing people that the Wii is the greatest thing in gaming since Pong was created.

Let's analyze a couple of points:
- It's a simple, honest to goodness game: let's look at the DS. What have been the biggest sellers? Simple games like Nintendogs, Animal Crossing and Brain Age. These games may be simple in gameplay and execution, but have a charm that people can't resist. They are very easy to get into and they provide hours upon hours of entertainment. Wii Sports has that charm to it. True, it may look like a tech demo gone wrong, but if gameplay delivers it will capture the hearts of people the same way the DS has done.

Red Steel has the potential of being a high caliber killer APP for the Wii, but isn't exactly the type of game you would introduce to people outside the gaming community. It is too dark and gritty and may even scare people off, especially with constant news about how crime games are affecting society. Zelda also has potential to be game of the year, but this is more of a fanboy game than a game you use to introduce people to the Wii.

Wii Sports on the other hand has a simple but cute presentation (complete with a face design feature), it is very approachable (sp?) and very easy to understand and play. Sometimes you need something simple in order to understand a behemoth. Hey, the first gaming sensation was Pong and it was a simple game, yet that small game started a successful industry.

- It has a theme that everyone can relate to: Even those that aren't avid sports fans (like me) enjoy going out and do some sports. Wii Sports will provide a slight simulation of that experience, and who knows, may even make it better for some.

- With it being bundled, it GUARANTEES that people will not miss it: With all the hype surrounding some of the launch titles (like Red Steel and Zelda), this small game had the potential of being over-shadowed due to its simplistic nature. But with the game being bundled people will take notice and finally play it and this sound crazy, but people might actually love it!

Remember people, the Wii is a drastic change in gaming. Nintendo shouldn't just mention it to the people. They basically need to shove it down our throats in order for the idea to be accepted. Bundling the Wii with the game might be an act of force towards the consumer, but it is one that needed to be done in order for the console to be accepted.

So yeah, it might be upsetting to some that the game is included, especially those that never wanted it, but if you think about it, Wii Sports may go from tech demo to potential APP that will sell many consoles and thus revolutionize the industry the same way the DS did.

You know about the Nintendo virus S_B has been talking for a while now, right? I'm sure it will just go stronger when the launch approaches.

Hell, even those that said that they will NOT buy a Wii because the name was retarded or lost all hope on Nintendo because of the name went back the minute they showed off the games and good press surrounded the system.

Like I said, this is all shock because it is a big news event. I'm sure that by next weekend things have cooled down. If the Wii name debate cooled down eventually, I'm sure this price debacle will.

You guys have to remember this is the shock that always happens whenever Nintendo announces something. It comes almost as a shock, especially when we spent months debating the price of the console.

I'm pretty sure that by next week everyone will have moved on and continue talking about Wii until the next big issue arrives.

The ones that seem affected the most are the uber hard core fans, the ones that literally spend 500 + dollars on a system launch, since they are forced to cut down on their expenses. I think the one that benefits the most are the casual, light consumers since an included game will appeal to them.

Also like I already mentioned in another thread, if naming the system the Wii did not kill the hype, which everyone and their grandmother said they would, I doubt the price and Wii sports will.
