I second that motion...

Seriously, its EXTREMELY hard to deny that Wii sports has an amazing appeal that has turned the Wii into the most sought out item in the industry right now.

The REAL power of Wii sports comes when you show them to other people. It's hard to find someone not desiring a Wii after playing Wii sports. Hell, both of my parents, who haven't played a game since the NES days, started playing it after watching me and SB play it.

So Smoke, give the game a second chance than to dismiss it simply because you aren't good at it or you don't care for it.

Simply because you found it boring it doesn't mean that your friends and family will think so too, unless you have total control of how they think, act, communicate and how they pursue their free will.

Either that or you are being a troll...

Sakurai pretty much said that he didn't want to shoehorn in Wii controls in fear of sacrificing gameplay for the sake of innovation.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is somehow trying to convince him to include some sort of Wiimote functions, considering that some of the Wii's fighters use them, but they too were clear that they want the best controls possible.

Twilight Princess still had some brutal scenes, even with the absence of blood. I would mention them here, but those would be considered spoilers.

As for that quote, let me tell you this...If they are truly worried that third party developers are being sloppy when making Wii games why aren't THEY making a difference by making a game that's both graphically astounding and with engaging gameplay?

I'm sure most of the games that are working on are for the PS3 and XBOX 360 and actually have little interest on the console.

Not to mention that he is talking about GRAPHICS, not gameplay. Factor 5 are pretty much a bunch of graphics whores since they DID make some of the most graphically beautiful games in the N64 and GC era. Of course they would be concerned that developers are not making games with great graphics.

Until the day they actually announce plans for the system, anything they say will be full of hypocrisy and ignorance.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendogs: Best of show challenge
« on: February 08, 2007, 03:40:52 PM »
I was watching some Nintendogs videos on You Tube when I started imagining how a Nintendogs for the Wii would be like. Then, some ideas started popping up.

Keep in mind this is still, but I think these ideas would make Nintendogs Wii something unique and special.

Premise
The basic premise is still the same as in the original DS game. You go to the kennel, adopt a puppy and give him or her lots of love and care. You can enter them in competitions to earn more so that you can buy some new items, a new house and other puppies.

This was pretty much it. While the game was fun and all the game repeated itself way too many times and the replay ability was low.

I was thinking that for the Wii they should add more challenges so that the time invested in raising the puppies is actually worth it and provides a goal.

So the idea I hatched was that of a Dog show. I know there were challenges in the DS games, but they were mini games designed to earn you money. The focus of this Nintendogs would be competition.

Gameplay
As I already mentioned, the gameplay would still be similar to the DS version, But instead of touch screen controls you have motion sensing.

To throw a ball, you make the motion with the Wiimote, to use the freesbie you make the motion with the Wiimote. In order to pet a puppy, a hand would appear on screen and the way you move the Wiimote would simulate how you would pet a dog.

The pointer would be used to select items and open menus along with the A button while either the one and two button would be the whistle to call your dogs.

The problem I see so far would be voice recognition. That would involve Nintendo making a headset microphone for the game. If they do, then there's no problem.

So far the game has been exactly like the DS game, I know that, but here are the changes I have come up with.

You know the walk option, right? In the DS version you planned your route, then you walked your puppy. Along the way, you could either meet with other trainers and their pups or presents hidden throughout.

I was, what if instead of just taking the same route with the same scripted events, you walked on a neighborhood that takes place in the online world?

Of course you would have the option of walking the puppy offline, but online what happens is that instead of  meeting scripted AI you get to meet other players from around the world and interact with their puppies in real time. You can even chat with them with the microphone! As expected, you would have the option of meeting strangers or just the friends you have on your friends list.

You could even drop presents for other people to find it online! It would be like a scavenger hunt where someone could drop a valuable or rare item and people would race to find it.

And speaking of online features, the game could use some of its Wiiconnect24 features. For example, you can make it so that your puppy goes out while your game is off and he or she would randomly visit a friend's house and play with their puppies, and when they get back they bring you a random present!

But this is the biggest addition to the formula. As I mentioned, the original DS game had Dog show like contests that were fun but were never part of the challenge. So I figured that if Nintendo does make a new game they should focus on this.

They should take those mini games and evolve them into a full fledged element of the gameplay. That would be the "Best of show" element of the game. You can enter a dog show filled with many challenges and contest for your puppy to enter. The better your puppy does the higher he or she will go in the ranks.

Here are some basic ideas for contest:
- Obedience test: Same as in the DS version
- Puppy races: Its a test of skill, speed and stamina. Your puppy races against other puppies in tracks that range from the normal to the obstacle filled.
- Fashion show: One of the best features in the original game is being able to dress your puppy up. So why not make a contest which rates how well you can dress your puppy up? Your puppy would model his or her accessories and be judged according to the style and presentation. How well you clean and groom your puppy also plays heavily on your puppy's appearance.
- Obstacle course: Same as the DS game
- Puppy tug of war: A battle against two puppies. One puppy would try to pull the other puppy into the end of the line.

These are what I have so far. If you can contribute some other ideas for contests post them here.

Here are some other additions/improvements for the Wii version:
- Have individual stores for every aspect of the game: While it was neat to be able to find items while walking, it does grow tedious. So instead of walking in order to get these items, why not have stores that specializes in each of the items in the game? For example, there would be the puppy care shop, the puppy accessory store, the toy stores and the house supplies store.

- The puppy doctor: I know that in Nintendogs the puppies never get sick, but this wouldn't be just another doctor. What this doctor does is that he will examine your puppy and tell you he or she feels. The doctor will also tell you what you need to do in order to raise him or her properly, what items to use and the of attitude the puppy has towards you.

- No limitations: One of the things that got in the way in the DS version was its limited gameplay. You could only teach your puppy up to three tricks a day, and then the puppy would have a limit of how many tricks it could learn. They should get rid of this in the Wii version. They should make it so that YOU have absolute control of the puppy, meaning that you can teach them as many tricks as you want.

This is what I have so far. If you can contribute any other ideas, please do.

Note that I know that if a Nintendogs Wii game is made chances are none of these will make it and could end up being just a jazzed up version of the DS game for all we know.

Which in your case is good, because it was your extreme excitement towards SSB Melee that actually ruined it. That and at the time the GC selection was slim pickings, making you wish for SSB Melee even more.

This isn't the case with Brawl, since there are a lot of games to look forward to and Brawl isn't the sole killer APP on the Wii.

I DO want some new info, though.

I don't like that pressing up on the analog stick makes you jump. It makes the slightly up+A attacks are harder to pull off. There are 2 jump buttons. It just seems extraneous.

If there's a Belmont in the game, the Castlevania stage could be the broken staircase leading to the Dracula's throne room. I better see a damn Belmont in the game....

Each character has modified versions of their original costumes (i.e. Peach's dress is more detailed). I'd like to see every character have a completely original Smash-only costume. I guess I just don't like the color-palettes.

I'd like to see Arthur from Ghouls and Ghosts. Too bad Maximo is out since he was PS2-only and the games sold so poorly. I liked that character.

Physics could use a lot of work.

Newcomer: Mii. I'm sure someone brought else mentioned this here. It's so obvious.

I bring this up whenever I talk about what I want to see in a Smash Bros. game. Create-A-Stage. Send them to a friend's over WiiConnect24.

You can count the Belmont character out. It seems that the rule will be one character per developer, and Konami is already represented via Solid Snake.

if Capcom decides to participate, I could either Megaman or someone from Resident Evil since those two franchises are the closest to Nintendo yet.

I LOVE the Mii idea. I hope they remember to implement them somehow. Hell, I'll take them as random audience members in a giant stadium

But let's not get our hopes up here...

Well, technically, Rayman Raving Rabbids could be considered the first, since it debuted on the Wii first, then moved to the other consoles. But it was already destined to be a multi console games, so its hard to say.

Despite it being a strategy RPG, it was fun and very watchable.

S_B, in some occasions plants need manure...which is ANIMAL CRAP.

Now that I think about it...

Manure: The absolutely god awful games
Dirt: Bad games that are still somewhat playable
Seed: Average game, but has potential
Bud: Solid title, but still needs improvement
Flower in bloom: A rock solid, amazing little game.
Beautiful flower: The absolute best game ever!

And they WILL.

Just like SB said, the PS2 was home to A LOT of games, many of the crap. But it also featured some amazing games, some being the best available this generation.

As an example, Okami, one of last year's most celebrated games, was born on the PS2. Would the PS2 have gotten that game if it wasn't the home to a great selection of games? Probably, but if there's anything the GC taught us is that when developers are not happy with how a game is selling on a console they will expand it and release it across other systems.

The Wii is only 3 months old, the games are barely starting to come. The games announced range from multiplatform ports to Wii exclusive. Please, put down the fanboy angst aside and just wait. If you want to avoid the inevitable bad games, fine. Its your money. But please, and I say this to EVERYONE, don't put down the efforts of third party developers. Some are truly dedicated and really want to develop of it.

At least give them a chance before jumping at them claiming "YOUR GAMES WILL SUCK AND WILL RUIN THE WII!!!!".

This isn't fair.

Just because people want to see more games on the Wii doesn't mean we're going to automatically be satisfied by a flurry of rushed games and uninspired ports. We more games, yes; but we still want good games.

I always thought it was a amazing that whenever someone complained about the lack of 3rd party games on any Nintendo system, there's always a rush of people listing any old crap that was released just to toss us a bone. This was especially the case on the 'Cube. "What do you mean Nintendo has no third party support!? Barney's Purple Adventures was just released!!"

While I can admit that it's a very good sign that the Wii is getting more support than the Cube, we're still seeing half-a**ed support for the most part--just slightly more of it. Safe, uninspiring games that publishers don't really have to take a real risk to put on the Wii. We don't see major, mature, big budget, envelope pushing titles (that are good, sorry Red Steel) of the sort that the other next gen consoles are getting. Heck, it's a pipe dream at best that the Wii version of Manhunt 2 will be more than a (most likely badly) ported PS2 game with Wii controls tacked on (though, I'm one of the people hoping that it's more than that).

And it just makes it frustrating when we say we want these kinds of games and get "shut down" thoughtlessly. We ask for a good, epic third party game, and people expect us to be happy with a game like Dewy's Adventure. We ask for a game with a mature setting and storyline, and immediately get lambasted for "thinking that blood and sex makes a good game", when the whole time by "mature" we meant a game with a setting more sophisticated than what we can read on the back of a cereal box before we solve the puzzle and find out just what did happen to Toucan Sam.

Heck, I know a lot of people (including myself) would be happy with even just an announcement proving that big things were on the way to the Wii from some godsend third party.

Once again, expect this to happen to a console which gets the most support.

There WILL be games that will be rushed with tacked on controls, and there will also be games that will be god awful. But there will also be games that range from rock solid to simply amazing and many will be truly ambitious and awe-inspiring.

You just have to wait till all of them are released. It's OK to not buy the games if you are not interested. No one if forcing you to buy the games, especially if you want something more. But its also unfair to dismiss that support, ESPECIALLY if you don't plan to try it out.

Do I need to remind you last week's Konami announcement?

They announced 4 games, 3 of them brand new IPs that have been made from the ground up. The other is a follow up to a very popular franchise, and it looks like Konami will put some EFFORT into it.

Square, easily the biggest third party at the moment, has two BRAND NEW games that are made exclusively for the Wii.

Along with the ports EA is also creating brand new games that make full use of the controller.

The thing is that some people, you included, are crying wolf a little too early. While its true that some developers will create rush jobs out of games, you forget that there are also developers that are more than willing to innovate and be creative.

Just give the Wii some time before you continue the "all games will be half assed!" nonsense.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Something that bugs me (about games on the Wii)

Like I mentioned before, crap games will be inevitable. Its a trade off. You either get a lot of games with loss of quality or get only a handful of high quality games. But the reality is that people see quantity first, quality second.

The PSone and PS2 were home to some god awful games, yet people were amazed at the massive library of games, which also contained some amazing hidden gems.

What I mean is that during the N64 and GC eras fans were complaining that developers were ignoring these consoles and wanted these games appear on the Nintendo consoles. Now that its looking that there will be more games this time around, fans are bitching that the game will damage it and that they don't need it.

Like I said, you either get one or the other. You can't have both. You can't expect the Wii to survive with just a handful of games, despite high quality, but you can't expect every single game to be stellar and well polished.

« on: February 06, 2007, 02:07:01 PM »
Ever since Manhunt 2 was announced in the afternoon, some opinions on the matter have annoyed me.

During the N64 and GC games, gamers were complaining that the systems weren't getting any games and developers were ignoring them. They were also complaining that Nintendo was being too strict about their third party games and needed to loosen up a bit and allow all kinds of games and not force such high quality rules. They also mentioned that they didn't need to force developers to use their proprietary formats and should go with the most common and easier to develop for.

The Wii is a whole different story. With ease of development, mass appeal and tons of potential, developers are now making a lot of games for it, but now the fans are complaining that the Wii will be home to un-inspired ports, rush jobs and third party games we don't care about...

So which is it? You want the Nintendo systems to have a vast library of games and want developers to experiment around with their games, yet demand that ALL of them meet Nintendo's standards and shouldn't suck?

I can honestly see why Nintendo has decided to focus on a broader audience of gamers rather than stick with the fans, since the fans themselves don't even know what they truly want.

I mean, they want the games, but at the same time they don't...MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MINDS ALREADY!

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Thestreet.com - Vying for Wii Pie
« on: February 06, 2007, 06:19:49 AM »
I like how they completely ignored the fact that...
- Zelda and Excite truck were the ONLY first party games at launch. ET might be fun and all, but people have been waiting for Zelda TP for nearly 4 years! The hype and anticipation was at an all time high when the game was finally released. OF COURSE people were going to eat it up.

- Even if Zelda ended up being the best selling Wii title, it was followed closely by beloved third party games like Madden, Trauma center, Red Steel and Rayman. In fact, it was those impressive sales that prompted developers to make more games for the Wii.

- Nintendo hasn't released a new game since Wario ware. There's Wii play, yes, but overall the highlights come from the third party offerings.

- They fail to mention that many new third party games are being announced each day, sometimes rivaling Nintendo's own announcement.

This is why I don't tend to pay much attention to non gaming media trying to analyze gaming media. It's true that Nintendo's games sell better than third party ones, but its annoying that they believe that third party games automatically flop on a Nintendo system. That may have been the case with the N64 and GC, sure, but the Wii is a whole new beast.
