NWR Forums Discord / Which image gets the point across better?
« on: May 03, 2007, 02:08:37 PM »
This one?

Or this one?

OK, I might as well explain the joke.

I'm pretty sure that I am not the only one who has encountered gamers who have a venomous hatred towards the Wii simply because "it doesn't meet their gamer standards". They say stuff like "Nintendo has betrayed me" and "I'm too much of a gamer for the Wii!" to the point where they become whiny, drama queens. Worst of all, they don't even bother trying the Wii out! Their hatred is so big that they refuse to touch it!

I know there are some people like this around the NWR forums, but some are worse than other and I can't help but mock them.

I don't mind their comments. Its their refusal to play the Wii that annoys me the most.

So, which image gets the point across the best?

Nintendo Gaming / So, how about that Mii popularity channel, eh?
« on: April 30, 2007, 02:52:46 PM »
If I am not mistaken, a while back there was a news story that said that Wii owners in Japan had gotten a Wiimail about the Mii popularity channel Miyamoto mentioned briefly at his GDC keynote coming sometime during the end of April.

Well, the month ends today and no word of it.

If only Nintendo would just give details about their channels rather than be cryptic about. I admit the reason I am so curious about this channel is because they have said NOTHING about it since GDC. The worst part? It will probably be a throwaway addition like the "Everybody Votes" channel, so I don't understand why there's so much secrecy about it.

Oh well, we'll see when it hits.

Nintendo Gaming / Big Brain Academy looks fun!
« on: April 29, 2007, 08:46:33 PM »
Before this my interest in the game was nearly non existent. I mean, I thought the DS game was fun, but slightly forgettable. Once you reach the highest weight the game becomes old.

Big Brain Academy Wii Degree looked like it could be more of the same, until I read the latest previews and saw the new footage.

I honestly think it could be way better than the DS version and far more creative! One of the challenges actually has you listening closely to the Wiimote's speaker, then on screen selecting the answer! What I find so cool about this is that last March I took a test in which one of the parts required you to listen to a conversation then write the answer on the answer sheet.

Not only that, the game gets props thanks to Mii usage. I can't state loud enough that there should be more games with Mii usage, so its great to see another game using them greatly.

Finally, the Wiiconnect24 feature looks like it could be a lot of fun.

So overall, it looks like Big Brain Academy Wii Degree could be more complete and even better than the DS version.

Anyone feel the same way?

Nintendo Gaming / HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, WII!
« on: April 27, 2007, 10:22:44 AM »
...No, I am not talking about the console itself. I am talking about the name.

On this day a year ago Nintendo unveiled the final name of the Revolution, the Wii, much to the surprise, and anger, of the fans and the people in the media.

I present to you..

The new name of the Revolution: The Wii
From global hate to global phenomenon

Oh, the many things people said. "The name is stupid. Third parties will flock to Sony and MS. Sony fans will have a riot. NINTENDO IS DOOMED!!!!". Its a year later. Let's see what happened to the Wii since then.

May 2006: Nintendo fully unveils the Wii and its launch titles. They are able to capture the attention and imaginations of the fans and the media, to the point where people run to the Nintendo booth. Meanwhile, Sony made a fool of themselves by revealing the PS3's final price tag (599 US DOLLARS!).

September 2006: Nintendo does a worldwide press release detailing the Wii's fall/winter launch. Many new features are announced, including the Miis. The final price of the console is 250 dollars. They reveal that the console will have Wii Sports as a bonus. Finally, they announced that it would be released 3 days after the PS3 launch. Many feared this would harm Nintendo. Once again, they were proven wrong.

November 2006: The Wii is released in the US and its a grand success. The Japan and Europe launches soon follow and history repeats itself. The PS3, on the other hand, fails to meet the Sony created hype.

April 2007: A year later and the Wii is still an incredible success. People are STILL getting in line in hopes of buying the Wii. The sales are so much people are predicting that the Wii will be hard to find until 2009.

Here is some of the stuff that people predicted about the Wii name:
- Third party support will decline: FALSE
Third party support is very strong at the moment. Not only that, the fear that the Wii's childish nature might scare some mature game developers away has been proven wrong. The Wii got EA's Godfather and it was the best reviewed version. The Wii will also get Manhunt 2 from Rockstar and Scarface from Sierra.

Third parties see great success on the Wii. For example, Ubisoft's launch support has netted them great results. Red Steel, the first game ever revealed for the Wii, sells over 900,000 copies.

The sales are so strong that many developers pledged support afterwards. Even some studios like EA and Disney have created development houses just for the Wii.

- The Wii will ruin Nintendo's image: FALSE
OK, the Wii is a silly name, but in a surprising turn of events, it actually did good. Instead of the sea of insults and jokes that doom sayers predicted last year, the Wii was so silly that it became joke proof. Nintendo turned it into a catchy tagline. Now, people are NOT afraid of saying "Wii" in public. In fact, its "cool".

- Sales will be worse than the GC: FALSE
Just look at the numbers. Enough said.

I know there were many predictions about the name's danger towards Nintendo, but this is what comes to mind.

So, those that had a positive outlook a year ago can cheer. The Wii is a great success, even 4 months after launch. Those that were overly pessimistic (which was about 90% of the world), should be laughed at now.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

(Yes, I am aware that I was one of the naysayers)

Honestly, I am glad I was proven wrong in my doom predictions. The name is still silly, don't get me wrong, but Nintendo has done so well with it that I don't care anymore.

So once again...

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY WII!

You have come a long way, baby!

EDIT: If you guys can find anti Wii pics I will be grateful. Its great to see how foolish some of the anger was. I know there were some really angry images floating around the net on this day a year ago.

NWR Forums Discord / Turnabout Nintendo-ism
« on: April 21, 2007, 05:58:37 PM »
Ever since we started to discuss the validity of Go Nintendo over at the Wii forums I felt as if I was playing a real life game of Phoenix Wright here.

Both parties have sincere sounded testimonies, but only one is relevant towards solving the case.

COURT IS IN SESSION!

Judge Pap here! Let's present the parties!

The NWR users will be the jury.

The thread where the debacle started.

Party 1
Name: Deguello and NWR community
Occupation: NWR member, reviewer
Story: Claims that he was treated unjustly after he went to the chat room to complain about the site posting his reviews without notifying him.
Witness: Pro 666
Claims that the website gets easy perks despite it being a blog that chronicles other websites. A Oprah like site in other words.

Party 2
Name: The Go Nintendo staff
Occupation: Nintendo blog
Story: RMC claims that he never knew of the story because Deguello never contacted him about it. Says that he feels bad about it. The site is also accused of getting easy press perks, no original content, RMC insulting its readers and never shaving or bathing.
Witness: The Go Nintendo staff
*They couldn't be contacted

So, who is the guilty party here? Is Deguello playing the victim card, or is Go Nintendo neglecting basic courtesy laws?

DISCUSS!

NOTE: Deguello and the NWR staff, if you feel that the issue is too serious to be made fun of feel free to discuss.

But considering the NWR users have run away with more serious stuff in the past this shouldn't be a problem.

General Gaming / FFXIII NOT A PS3 EXCLUSIVE!
« on: April 20, 2007, 05:17:44 AM »
OK Cap, add this to your "I called it many years ago!" list.

From PS3 center:
"In news that is sure to rock the gaming world it has been confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII, the blockbuster RPG highly anticipated by millions of fans of the series, will not be an exclusive game for the PlayStation 3 console.

The Final Fantasy XIII project as of right now consists of two games for the PlayStation 3 as well as a mobile game.  Motomu Toriyama of Square Enix has come out and made the confirmation that other consoles will be receiving Final Fantasy XIII on top of the PlayStation 3.

ps3

This is pretty big news and could lead to speculation as to which Final Fantasy XIII games are going where.  The obvious rumors are going to be that FFXIII is heading to the Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation 3.

This quote though could also mean that the series could be heading to the Nintendo DS handheld and or the Nintendo WII as well since Square Enix has been very impressed and pleased with the progression and installed user base of the Wii, with the DS already receiving the Final Fantasy treatment a few times.

Let the rumors begin.  Either way though the fact that Final Fantasy XIII will not be a PS3-exclusive has to make any Sony fan cringe in their gaming chairs."

Link

I'll admit I am not 100% sure, since I can't find the official statement anywhere. But I doubt a PS3 fan site would post a news like this. Also, this has been speculated for a long time, especially after the E3 fiasco happened.

This is also quite confusing. Square has said that FFXIII is going to be more than one game, yet this story seems to be talking about the FIRST game in the project, the PS3 bound FFXIII.

So take this however you want it.

Seriously, everytime I go to Go Nintendo or any other website there's always some sort of editorial that says the Wii will eventually bomb, or that Nintendo will fail, or that people will get tired of it, so on and so forth.

What the crap??

Me thinks that this is the analysts trying to pin down some sort of flaw or doom theory on the Wii's success in hopes that they will eventually be proven right when the time comes.

Not even the DS got this much crap...

Am I the only one that noticed this?

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Kart Arcade GP: Wii edition?
« on: April 15, 2007, 04:52:20 PM »
I was reading the latest IGN N-query when a reader asked why Nintendo hasn't ported any of the Mario Kart Arcade games to the Wii, or why hasn't Nintendo or Namco made the announcement of a Wii version in the works.

I'll admit that I fall on the camp of people that think Mario Kart Arcade GP should be on the Wii. We all know that arcades are nearly dead, so there's a good chance that people don't even know the game exists. The Mario Kart series is also a really popular franchise, so it would be very unfortunate if a version of the series was left to die in an arcade somewhere.

The game is already made, all it needs is a medium that is actually popular!

Here's the reason why I believe the game can be ported over to the Wii:
Tri force hardware: The tri force hardware (which was created by Nintendo, Sega and Namco if I am not mistaken, feel free to correct me here) is essentially based on Gamecube hardware. And part of the Wii hardware is GC hardware, so porting the game should be a breeze. The actual game isn't a graphical powerhouse so its not like the Wii is so severely underpowered that it can't handle Mario Kart Arcade.

Its a Nintendo franchise: And a really popular one too. If there's one thing Nintendo loves to do is to squeeze the life out of its franchises, so once again it would be stupid of them to not port part of the game to the Wii.

Before moving on, I KNOW there are some pessimists that believe that this will never happen, simply because other Arcade exclusive Nintendo titles have never been released. But keep in mind this: The arcade content of F-Zero GC could be unlocked, making it so that both the GC version AND the AC version was on the same disc, so technically the AC version WAS released.

I also know that Namco was planning on an AC version of Star Fox Assault, but that got canceled way before it was put into motion, so that doesn't count.

The only thing Nintendo should trim down for the Wii version is the stupid arcade rules (you don't even get a free game if you finish second), maybe try to trim down some of the Namco influences (as much as I like Pac-Man, its weird that Pac Man and Tamagotchi characters are all over the place) and work on the controls a bit (I didn't have any problems on my initial playtests, but some of my friends felt they were too loose).

Don't get me wrong, though. As much as I believe that a Wii version of Mario Kart Arcade GP is possible my money is on Nintendo developing its own version of Mario Kart for the Wii. In fact, the chances are far more higher.

But still, considering the facts I just posted it would be weird if we never got the game.

Don't bite my head off, though. I know I am the minority here, but that's no excuse.

NWR Forums Discord / Smash_Brother: The next big adjective
« on: April 12, 2007, 06:36:30 PM »
Since a couple of NWR members have been using the name as an adjective, I propose we turn into in a REAL world!

Here we go!

Smash_Brother
Noun

Origin
Smash_Brother is the name of an avid gamer who became a fanatic of the game "Super Smash Bros.". His love for the game was so strong that he decided that his online name would be "Smash_Brother". Since then, online users have referred to him as Smash_Brother, or S_B (SB) for short.

Adjective
Smash_Brother: Name given to someone who puts a lot of effort and passion into accomplishing something, sometimes above the standard levels of effort. Someone overly fanatical about a certain mission or goal.

Origin
At the Nintendo World Report forums, Smash_Brother is known for buying the most Wiis. He is also known for going through great lengths just to get the console, including waiting in line during a harsh winter morning and waiting all night. He has also loudly criticized Nintendo's poor efforts when trying to ship more Wiis. Because of that, some users have used the name "Smash_Brother" as a way to categorize a level of effort, or to name someone who puts a lot of time, energy and passion into completing an objective.

Used in a sentence
"Michael is not showing the level of Smash_Brother that he usually puts into his homework"

"Wow, that's the most amazing display of Smash_Brother I have ever seen!"

Nintendo Gaming / The Wii is a "mistake"...
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:03:57 AM »
This is the reason why I don't even bother with some websites.

Games Radar has posted an editorial about the top 7 mistakes Nintendo has ever done. Here's the editorial.

Guess what made number 7...

That's right, in their eyes the Wii is a mistake.

The editorial is full of cynical assumptions. The system is barely 5 months old and they are already hailing as a potential mistake. Hell, not even Ian, Mantidor and Pittboi could come up with such negative views on the system.

The Wii is already outselling the PS3 and is bound to take over the 360 in a year. The support is very strong at the moment and even when the system is extremely hard to find it sells well over 200,000 systems a month. I doubt its just a fad.

But I'm not that worried, since I remember that the DS was considered a fad and a childish gimmick. Millions of DSs later and I am still waiting for the fad to end.

And don't even get me started on the N64 rant. I agree that the system was full of flaws and Nintendo made a lot of mistakes, but it was home to some of the best and most influential games ever.

General Chat / Hurt my back...
« on: April 10, 2007, 08:47:47 AM »
I've been on an strict Wii Boxing training in the last few days. Last Saturday could be considered my best and worst night. The best night because I got both Gold AND Platinum medals on the working the bag mini game. I also took one of my Miis and got him all the way to pro status in a matter of minutes. It was the worst night because I hurt my back badly.

At first I thought it was the typical body sore that you get after long periods of excersize, so I decided to rest for a while. But it didn't go away. In fact, the pain got worse and worse to the point where every movement hurt badly.

Since then I've been on medication and massage treatments.

But at least I got a Platinum medal out of it!

PS: This isn't the reason I haven't been online lately. Its because our phone service has been cut off and took the internet along with it, so now we are trying to get it back as soon as humanly possible.

If these were sold or easy to make I would get some for capamerica for his birthday next month. This screams Nintendo love!

NWR Forums Discord / My masterpiece: Family playing the PS3
« on: April 06, 2007, 06:52:36 PM »
During a discussion about the PS3 launch in Europe that I frequent to someone posted a comment by a sales rep stating that the PS3 was selling so well that families of 4 were buying one for each member of the family. One poster commented that he wanted to see a pic of the family with their PS3s and 3 individual TVs.

So my imagination starting working and this is what came out...

Might as well explain it (as if it didn't explain itself).

Of course, everyone is THRILLED by the PS3. The father's wig has flipped out and he is getting massive bloodshot eyes (due to the EXTREME!). His PS3, meanwhile, is sucking his money (and other personal belongings), away. But he doesn't care. It's all WORTH IT!

The mother (the one with the brown hair), is impressed. So much, in fact that her hair is being blown away...along with her top/bra.

The little girl (pig tails) is witnessing the wonders of HD Graphics. She is watching an extreme close up of a character's skin. The details are so amazing she can even see the small balls of puss forming around the blemish in the screen! NEXT GEN FTW!

The boy likes his PS3 so much that he shaved "I heart PS3" on his skull, while he witness the wonders of 4D gaming!

And finally, the dog is calm because he's about to set it up.

The family's so wealthy that they can afford FLOATING HD TV sets (hence the rings underneath the TVs).

And that's my masterpiece in a nutshell.

I'll be putting up the prints for sale at Deviant art soon.

Nintendo Gaming / Guy wins a Wii
« on: April 01, 2007, 05:27:00 PM »
I saw this video on Go Nintendo and thought it was great, so I wanted to share it with you all!

The video is about this guy who won a Wii in one of those big prize arcade machines. Don't know if the video is real or not, but the reactions are PRICELESS (the video is NSFW though due to a lot of cursing).

Nintendo Gaming / This just in...THE WII ADS PROMOTE VIOLENCE!
« on: March 28, 2007, 04:31:37 PM »
I kid you not, people have actually complained that the Wii ads currently running on TV promote and encourage the practice of violence and crimes.

I ain't kidding...

But this is the absolute best part...
"Seven complainants found the "depiction of violence in the ad offensive and disturbing". One viewer stated that it was reminiscent of recent videos released by hostage-takers in Iraq."

Good GOD people have nothing better to do and instead nitpick everything that is on TV...

I haven't played any of the NG games, but I know a lot of fans will be thrilled.

Nintendo Gaming / Samba the Amigo should be on the Wii...
« on: March 25, 2007, 09:12:25 AM »
Seriously, I just saw footage of it on YouTube and thought the Wiimote and nunchuck could easily simulate the original game's maracas.

If I am not mistaken, the original maracas consisted of motion sensors, right? Well, both the Wiimote and the nunchuck has motion sensing integrated into them so its not like its impossible to emulate the gameplay of SDA on the Wii.

Plus, this would be an excellent chance for fans who never played the original to try it on the Wii. Plus, the game would be MUCH MORE cheaper (the original game set you away over 80 bucks because of the maracas and carpet), since the extra components are already available when you buy the Wii.

Also, in fear of Sonic Team messing it up, they should just take the original game plus the expansion pack, bundle them on a DVD and BE DONE WITH IT. No extra additions, no new gameplay features, no reworked graphics, NOTHING. Maybe a new song here and there, but nothing else. This guarantees that what we get is the original game intact, not a reworked version with tons of flaws (we all know what happened to Sonic Adventure on the GC).

Here are the two videos I was talking about:
Video 1
Video 2

Since I never played the game myself, feel free to add to the discussion.

Nintendo Gaming / Toonami reviews the Wii
« on: March 20, 2007, 06:42:17 AM »
Not the ultimate review of the system, but its quite interesting.

Beware the cheese, though!

Yeah, I know the video itself is stupid as hell, BUT this proves that the Wii has mainstream appeal unlike any Nintendo console before it.

I mean, Toonami is where a lot of popular anime shows air (like Naruto and DBZ) and the boys can't get enough of them. So if they see this they will be interested.

In other words, if the boys see that their favorite programming block APPROVES of the system and its games, they will get interest and urge their parents to get it as well as demand others to follow suit. Just hearing that Wii Sports is a great game brings me joy.

Also, Toonami used to favor a lot of PS2 games in the past, so this is quite the change.

Not like the Wii needs it at the moment, but ANY TV spot for the Wii is very welcomed.

Awesome commercial for the UK release of Phoenix Wright

What I like so much about it is that its so simple yet very effective. It has a woman getting into the case and thinking about the contradictions in the case.

Plus, I've never seen commercials for PW in the US. These types of commercials would work great in the US, especially if you advertise it in the US towards the Forensic TV/Court TV fans.

General Chat / Pokemon Diamond and Pearl
« on: March 11, 2007, 12:54:18 PM »
...No, I am not talking about the DS game coming out next month. I am talking about the anime series based on the latest games.

While searching around for the latest episode of Naruto (who has gone MIA for some reason) I encountered a fansubbed episode of the latest Pokemon series, called Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Since I am curious about the latest games I decided to download it.

The weird thing? The new series had potential.

Instead of following the ever so tired team of Ash and Pikachu, they started with a new trainer called Hikari. She reminds me of a younger Ash (lots of ambition, but extremely clumsy and careless). We then meet D&P's professor, who is a badass. No, he didn't do anything special, but the guy looked TOUGH, especially when compared to Oak and all the other professors (for some reason, I see him as being Russian...). And finally, we meet the latest starter Pokemon (the water penguin, the fire monkey and the grass turtle). After an amusing and chaotic scene, the scenes heavily channel the first ever Pokemon episode, complete with an ambiguous view of D&P's main legendary Pokemon.

So far, I was pleased. I mean, it looked as if the Pokemon anime team truly wanted to start all over and follow this new character, allowing for some new friends, enemies and adventures...

...But it all went downhill when Ash's mug appeared on screen at the end. Not only that, Team Rocket appear, they try to steal Pikachu, they are blasted off again and Ash arrives in the Senion region.

Once I saw that all hope was lost. I expect the same tired stories, Team Rocket antics, battles and characters.

So I am expecting nothing out of the new series. I'll stick to Pokemon DS and Battle revolution thank you very much...
