Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii: The cheapest expensive console
« on: May 12, 2006, 05:16:11 PM »
i told my mom once about Wii randomly and she was like "are you going to buy it" with this tone in her voice as if she were worried. i told her "of course i am" and she was like "why are you going to throw away all that money" and i told her how much it would be, and told her how much the 360 was and ps3 will be and her mind was blown. she couldnt understand why it would be cheaper then the other two because she thought the technology of the controller was something so new that it HAD to be expensive.

she isnt a gamer, not at all, but she loves my brain age game and sometimes borrows my ds to play a quick sadoku puzzle. she knows nothing about gigs and HD or any of that, but the simple idea of 3d motion sensing in a video game, after she's seen me play NES, SNES, n64, and GCN; she thinks its such a step into the future that she assumed such a machine would be too expensive. So all your thoughts are correct, to joe public the price point will be a steal compared to the other two systems out there that don't even offer what nintendo is.

that and consumers are dumb. someone else (not you ceric) brought this up in another thread, that countless parents went to retailers asking for the PS9 because they saw the ad's for it, and new their kids wanted a "playstationg something or other" and thought that was the new thing. a few ads like that for Wii would make the Wii stand out in parents minds who know nothing about video games and want to buy the new "cool" thing for their kids.

the ads could have Wiimotes doing all sorts of crazy futuristic things and have some cliche slogan like "the future starts here" and show the Wiimote standing upright against a black screen, then morphing into the Wii logo. that all it would take to sell the average consumer on something and make them think its lightyears ahead of its time

think of it this way UncleBob....atleast after you go homless buying all the Wii games, you'll have something to show for it. you'll have a huge library of games, a plethora if you will.

what will sony fans get? thats right, a PS3 (nothing else)

yeah that feeling of solitude in metroid is the best; feeling like you're the only being on a giant planet that isnt some blood thursty creature.

although knowing that there might be another bounty hunter on the same planet as you, and not knowing if they are friend or fo or knowing when they will show up is interesting too.

my god Wii is going to be amazing.

ditto.  i cant wiat to try a 'freeze-shot' of my own. the one shown on the e3 demo was great. waving your hands down to make your enemies kneel on the floor is awesome and will be totally immersive. i can picture yelling "get down!" while doing so lol. looks like nodding 'yes' to questions won't be so silly after all either.

Yeah, I had it memorized too.  Then one day I realized that EVERY single line of text was sexual innuendo.  After that I felt dirty.

im sure theres plenty of us who have the scripts for both starfox and starfox 64 memorized, so don't worry. Question though...how is every single line sexual innuendo? please explain cuz im sure i missed something

agreed the golf game did look better even though it was cartoony. what i was trying to say is that a nongamer would be turned of by a hyper-realistic tennis sim. i agree they could add more detail to the tennis game, it looked like lego figures IMO, but i can see why they didnt go all out in the graphics dept. also remember, there is still devolepment time. the tennis game might of been something new in the works and only shown off because it was a great 4player game to have the AOL contest winner play with the nintendo execs.

golf, if i remember correctly, we have known about alot longer, so it could just be further in development.
i stand by my opinion though. a hyper-realistic tennis sim, or any sports sim really, has the potential to intimidate a nongamer. my aunt won't go anywhere near my cousins madden games but does enjoy playing a round of mario golf. if the game was something like Tiger Woods golf she probably wouldnt ever think of playing it.

That and, swinging around a hammer and bashing stuff does sound fun. There's potential there, in any case.

eactly. when i saw comments like "look at big games and see what made them great (ie halo, gta)" i repeated to myself my first impression when i saw the five seconds of the project H.A.M.M.E.R footage;  "oh god it looks like a god of war game".

all my friends rave about that game adn when i finally played it, it was nothign special. i never liked beat-em-up games so the game wasnt for me. the thing is, i know they never liked those games either, they were just caught in on all the hype (and sadly the nudity). i wont discount nintendo though, since their not known for making games of this style i cant wait to see what exactly they plan on doing with this. if it turns out to be something like GoW i just wont buy it, theres other titles that fulfill MY interest.

its that easy. dont like it? dont buy it

agreeing with michael.

it seems like alot of the complaints about the graphics beeing "bad" or saying they "SHOULD be better" are directed towards the tennis game.

what you're forgetting is the tennis game isn't made for you. if it was it would be a dedicated tennis game, sim or mario tennis, and be polished to its finest. Keep in mind that this tennis game, as well as the golf and a few other quirky looking sports games are going to be on one disc as a package. It's stripped down becuase this is a type of variety package they want to aim towards the non-gamers. What other tennis game do you think the person from the TIME article was playing? remember his review of it? he siad it was probably the funnest one to play. why? because it was aimed to him. He was a nongamer, and zelda wouldnt appeal to him, nor would warioware (and i say this becuase its filled with lightning fast mini games that it would take nongamers awhile to figure out).

The tennis game was fun to him because a realistic looking tennis sim would be intimidating. They would play him the demo and show him how to use the controllers and because it looked so real he would assume you would have to already be a master of tennis to play. That clearly wasnt the case. The cartoonish, non-threatening graphics, made it so he would get into the game thinking "oh this looks easy, i just have to swing when the ball comes at me..." and thats all he would think. From there he could then realize the precision of the control would alow for backhand, forhand, lobs, topsins, etc. Which ultimately he did. Notice that nowhere in the article did Itawa or anyone go into specific detail about how he should control the game. Maybe it was left out or maybe not. Its my impression that they could of simply said "try this...how do you control it? like you're playing tennis" and the ball was served and the man from the TIME article simply swung and connected.

TONS.

When i got there at around 10:15ish i was lookin inside and only saw staffers, and called Builditup1 because we were supposed to meet there and i was like "yeah there seems to be no line or whatever, i dont get it....OH SH*T!"; i turned the corner and there was a huge crowd. i move to the back and shortly after a storm of people lined up behind me. i kept checking and i could only see till the end of the block and the line stretched that far.

we didnt start heading in till 12:30 and once i got in i rushed up stairs to get a good spot for the press conference viewing, found on in the corner by the windows over looking the street. they were still letting people in and again the line was till about the end of the block, as far as i could see really.

they were supposed to only be able to 'seat' 350 people but it felt like more than that. as soon as the press conference was over they set up the store back to normal and it was open to the general public (aka shoppers and sight seers) so more people came in and everyone looked like they were having a good ol' time. like i siad in the last post, nintendo really knows how to show a party.

ps. builditup1 and i never got to meet, but it turns out he ran into another pgc'er, so atleast 3 of us were there.

for those of you who didnt get to go, i'd like to share what my experience was like.

the first thing i noticed when i walked in the door was the a big screen with an animated mario on it, with the World Store's second level as his background. The employees there encouraged everyone to ask him a question and many did, the responses were priceless.

here are just a few of my favorite quotes from mario himself:

"yeah...love and eating bad meatballs is about the same feeling. just dont tell your princess "i love you like a dirty meatball" or you'll get a big bowl of pasta over your head.

(when asked if mario was friends with sonic) "chronic?!? waht'd you say?"

"what part of brooklyn am i from? i'm from my mama's house of course"

(mario over hears an announcement about a nintendogs trivia contest) "so have you guys played nintendogs?" (when asked if mario has a dog) "yeah, i have yoshi!"

(mario rapped at one point)

(when asked about the Mario Bros. Movie) "did any of you see the movie? what'd you think of it?" (crowd response was mostly positive, mario paused) "yeah alot of people thought it was HORRIBLE though...john lequasamo (sp?) was a nice guy though. the goombas and koopas having small heads was funny too"

(when asked about his relationship with peach) "ah the princess is very special to me, she makes my heart go 'badaboom badabam badabing"

(special surpise guest wario) "hey can you guys tell me the color of my shoes? i cant see them over my big fat stomach"

so much fun

also there were photo ops with Link, straight outta the twilight princess world too. (i got a pic with him!) and when he was resting, zelda trivia with TP tshirts as the prize.

when you werent joinging in those festivities you could play tons of games, smash being the most popular of course. also there were free giveaways by "professors" if you trained your brain at the DS roundtable.

also worth noting, alot of the nintendo world employees were walking around with their straight from japan DSL's, atleast two of them i noticed were Navy colored, and one was Teal (oh and the girl walking around with it was pretty cute too!).

all in all it was a great event and well worth the long wiat in line. the excitement in the air was something very special, and it was great to be surrounded by so many loyal fans while the press conferance was beings hown live. many loud cheers when certain franchises were shown, the biggest of which was for Super Mario Galaxy.

Nintendo really knows how to throw a party and this was the next best thign if you couldnt make it out to LA like many of us couldnt. I know of atelast one other PGC forum member who went, and heres hoping that many more of you could make it to events like these in the future and show people what community is really about.

yes but it didnt give any incite to the game.
reggie started talking about it and you see a volcano erupt, then a giant tidal wave flood a city (i swore they took a scene from The Day After Tomorrow when they showed it) then you see a gritty character.
the character looked like a male in his mid twenties with midlength (from waht i remember) black hair and facial hair. that was all

i know theres more exciting things to post about but i just wanted to add my two cents:

Wiimote; 3d motion sensing capability; features rumble

playstation 3 sparkling innovation controller; tilts; lacks rumble because it would 'interfere' with the gyros.

HA!

I only read about it. But from what I read and heard, the only showed off a video of them. What I meant is that I wanted them to shown off on stage, show off how the games worked with the controller in real time. I wanted a full blown presentation, not video.

And Rick, I was talking about it with a friend who was watching it live and he wasn't all that impressed either...

I just fail to see why the conference was so amazing considering the details talked about were pretty basic...

im not sure if anyone beat me to this but....

they DID show it off in real time. they did for Z:TP and a tennis game. the tennis game is the one that was the best only because it had Reggie, Iwata, Miyamoto and the dude that one the aol contest to be first to play Wii. it was great because it was so simple and you can tell. no nunchuck attachment, just the wiimote. two on two; even the aol contest winner, i think his name was Scott, got the hang of it and BEAT REGGIE (i think it was reggie he beat....yeah im pretty sure he was paired with miyamoto.....what an honor

yeah and the sad part is, this could be the "straw that broke the camels back" for me. i'll have to stop trying to prove what sony ripped off and from who and instead do what reggie would do; punch them in the face

given sonys track record; its hard to believe anyone could actually think that sony would of come up with this before nintendo, before microsoft even.
they've always taken the "wait and see" approach before "innovating".

The funny thing is...Sony may not have copied Nintendo.  They could have been planning this all along, but Nintendo beat them by designing an even better concept than Sony.  And Nintendo showing it first really helped, by having everyone see it as Nintendo's innovation.

i dont think so. nintendo has had gyroscopes in their portable games for awhile now, i think the first might of been a GBC title. it could of crossed their mind, even tested it, but realized it didnt add to the game. then later on thought up the full 3d motion sensing that they are using today.

This one is definately just sony's reaction to all the good press nintendo is getting based soley on their innovative new controler; not graphics processing and cpu power or any of that trivial stuff. if sony had been planning this for a longer amount of time, as in BEFORE nintendo showed off the wiimote then their efforts would of been greater than what was shown today. this is just something that was thrown together because they didnt think it (the wiimote) would be recieved as well as it has

The conference opens, revealing IWATA-SAN at the podium while beside him, MIYAMOTO-SAN is playing Pilotwings with what appears to be... a giant dual-shock controller. He's trying to control it entirely by tilt and doing quite badly.

MIYAMOTO: Iwata-san, we're losing!
IWATA: What'ss wrongu, Miyamoto-san?
MIYAMOTO: We needu mow powuh!

As he speaks, REGGIE enters, seizes the dual-shock from his hands, and smashes it on the ground. It shatters, revealing inside: the Wiimote.

IWATA: Sank you, Mr Fils-Aimesu!

He takes the remote and begins performing dazzling feats of aerial prowess
REGGIE: No problem, Iwata-san. In addition to kicking ass and taking names, I'm all about taking out the trash.
Deafening applause.

thats the best laugh i've had all day, thanks lol. i was ready to post a thought of reggie coming out in commando garb and not saying a damn word, just standing behind iwata and miyamoto as their "muscle"
no taking names, just mental notes of whom to take out first with the first ever machine gun-wiimote attachment!
he'll start blasting the non believers as iwata and miyamoto describe the different things the machine gun attachment will do. when he's out of ammo he'll pull out his Nintendo Bow that shoots Wii-arrows and uses the "big secret" feature of the remote; heat sensing!! Reggie will then let a barrage of heat seaking wii-arrows into the crowd as miyamoto smiles and iwata explains all the possibilities this could bring to gaming. (no need to worry about nintendo fans, they will all be seated by the air conditioning).

iwata: some of you have criticized our choice in naming our next revolutionary console. you have said that it is childish and immature. now with these innovative attachments, when a sony or ms fanboy point and laugh becuase you are playing with your "wii-wii" you can simply open up a can of whoop ass on them.

miyamoto: ::laughs and smiles::
