This sounds interesting, but it's THQ, and 5TH Cell has apparently done little other than cell phone games, so I have no idea what they're capable of.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The Name Wii: Why I Don't Like It

Well, this is being pedantic, but just because demand is exceeding production capacity doesn't mean it's the highest it could possibly be.  It's just not worth worrying about because, once again, demand is exceeding production capacity.  Maybe with a different name, demand might be some percent higher or lower than it is, but as long as demand is exceeding production capacity, that doesn't matter.  By now, so much momentum has been built that it won't matter after that's no longer the case, either.  It truly is moot (in the more recent, pedant-annoying sense of the word).

Personally I wish I knew more details about great names for products, but I wasn't a marketing major, though I do know the name is still an important piece to the puzzle in pretty much any product, which is why millions is usually spent trying to develop it!

I'm no marketing major either, but I think Nintendo took a big risk with the name, mostly because it's so unconventional.  It seems to have turned out that more people made the "Whee!" connection than anything else, so everything worked out in the end, although I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting the pronoun "we" connection as anything more than a pun used in the commercials.

Personally, I still think it's a bit lame and sounds too much like it was created by a committee, but I can deal with it.  At the very least, I've long since gotten over arguing about it.  One thing I've noticed, however, is that whenever people bring it up in conversation (which happens more than I expected, which is awesome), they always explain what it is briefly.  They say things like, "Have you tried the Wii?  The new Nintendo console?"  They don't do that when they mention the PS3 or Xbox 360.  Part of that may be that the PS3 and Xbox 360 have sequel names, so everyone's had several years to learn to associate those names with video games.  Another possibility is that Wii is the least descriptive name for a console Nintendo has ever used.  Previous names included the words entertainment, game, or, after it became synonymous with games, Nintendo.  Regardless, it doesn't seem to dampen enthusiasm at all, and I'd chalk it up as a point for the name not having a significant effect either way.

It's not so much that users resist change as it is that change for change's sake is an epidemic in new versions of software.  Rarely are changes made for the better.  They're usually flashy and designed to attract new users.

I have a question.  Are you just trying to use us to fulfill your dreams of a world of constant war because you think warfare is a noble and necessary part of the human condition?

Disaster has always been "a brand name under which a series of products is released" for Nintendo?  It's amazing that a game that hasn't even been finished yet is already an entire series.

Easier often means cheaper in business.  Monolith has certain qualities that a hypothetical new Nintendo studio lacks.  Existence, for one.  Plus, he might have wanted to stay where he was, or he may have been unwilling to be assimilated into a larger company.  Perhaps if he really does still own the rights to Xenosaga, he doesn't want to give them up to Nintendo either.  Finally, if things don't work out in the long run, it will be a lot easier for Nintendo to sell his studio than it would be to fire him.

I'm going to wait and see as far as Monolith's franchises are concerned, but it is entirely possible that this deal was just a variation on the "Hand pick the best members of your dev staff and we'll give you your own internal Nintendo studio" plan.  If Nintendo wanted Sugiura, buying a dominating share of his existing studio might have been easier than building him a new one at Nintendo.

Edit:  It would also make it easier to cut its ties to Monolith and Sugiura in the future.

I think there should be a federal law requiring all filled donuts to be clearly labeled.  I like some fillings, but I will never bite into anything with a mystery filling again now that I know some of them have lemon-flavored toxic waste in them.

Well, today's posted screenshots have finally captured my interest.  DK Racing was the game I most regretted losing when Rare left.  The bongos didn't really do much for me, but racing on rhinos, swordfish, and mine carts sure does.

You just needed to complete some side quests and earn a bigger wallet.

I bought Pokemon Blue just to see what all the hubbub was about, but I was so far out of the demographic range (in college) that I never even saw anyone on campus playing a Game Boy, let alone Pokemon, so I never got to do any trading.  The online trading aspect of Diamond and Pearl intrigues me, but it would still be impossible to "catch 'em all" at this point, so I doubt I'd go very far.

Lesson learned: Always check your ref-- I mean, always back up the rom before downloading an update.

If I had known that the frame rate was improved, I might have bought it before this happened.

That reminds me of the famous Yogiism, "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."  Obviously a lot of people are buying Wiis, or they wouldn't be selling out.

If you can't request a pokemon online until you've seen it, does that mean trades for pokemon you can't ever see in your version can only be done locally?

You may be a victim of Intel's cost saving measures.  There was a discussion on Slashdot recently about problems related to IDE support on new Intel motherboards.  You might find it helpful.

I've been in a stable job for several years now, but if there's one thing I learned from my job search, it's that personal connections matter more than you can ever imagine.  My two best prospects both came to me through people I had known for a long time.  At the first of the two, the interviewer pointed to a three inch stack of paper on his desk and told me they were the resumes that came in from their  web site postings.  The whole stack was going in the trash because they got enough qualified candidates from more traditional avenues.  I was placed ahead of hundreds or maybe thousands of other applicants just because my resume had been handed in by someone my potential boss knew and worked with.  Use any connections you have to go from "Anonymous Internet Applicant #1032" to "John says this guy is good."

I don't see how a video game that tells you to turn off the TV and go outside is so much weirder than a TV show that tells you to turn off the TV and go outside.

I always thought the ending of Ocarina of Time was stupid, but if Nintendo really did acknowledge that sending Link back in time caused major weirdness, then I can sleep a little easier at night.
