Nintendo Gaming / Wii Input
« on: November 03, 2006, 07:15:15 AM »
Nintendo has yet to announce how Wii users will communicate with one another.  There has been no keyboard announced, and the few Wii interface videos that have been shown don't have a virtual keyboard. Personally I think it's a little late to announce a new periphal for a system that is going to launch in less than 16 days.

Also I was watching G4 today, and they were speaking to a Nintendo rep, and the interviewer asked they guy, how will the Mii's communicate? Text, or will little bubbles pop up over their heads? His answer was that there will be many communication features including the ability to use a message board, and leave messages for your friends, BUT, we're not revealing it yet, it's one more of those secrets we want you to wait for!

A keyboard is not a secret.

The other question is, why would Nintendo wait this long to announce such a vital part of the online strategy. It seems that besides gameplay all other features of Nintendo's online system will be available for use right out of the box. So it would seem that the method to communicate would already be included in the box.  When we're this close to launch and no extra periphal has been announced it's safe to assume one of two things: 1. As discussed and much exhausted, the Wii-mote's speaker also includes a microphone. 2 Nintendo is going to piss off a lot of people by either using the one of the slowest on-screen keyboards ever, or announcing a new peripheral.

The biggest question is why keep this secret until now? Whatever the input method is, we have seen nothing of it. It's a little late for them to be worried about Sony copying their method as the launch of the PS3 is less than 2weeks away. They still owe us more details on Wii24Connect, but even that they gave a good amount of information already. However, something as important as the way we'll all be communicating with each other should have been revealed, unless it's the simple act saying that the controller also has a mic, which for the sake of making sure there are no riots, I hope it is.

Nintendo Gaming / Pretty Random Thought
« on: October 28, 2006, 04:38:36 PM »
I was thinking of an RPG idea for the Wii in which using the 24connect service the game would take place in a massive world(Hyrule in Twilight Princess is supposed so to take over 10 real time minutes to cross?) in which when you reach a certain point the game stops until the release of the next "episode". This would work well I think in a action based(as opposed to social) RPG it would be like watching a t.v show but actually controlling the onscreen action. new areas could open up, places revisted, changing landscapes due to evolving world, or the dark power you're trying to stop or trying to spread further!! (i'd love an evil RPG, any RPG really ) if the first game started with 10 episodes we could see games with 24 or 26 like a lot of (my favorite) anime series. We could literally play a game from it's release until the release the next console.

Anyway...

The random thought was, I wonder what creates more possibilities, the computer generated random level up stats, or when the player is given the option of what stats to raise. I don't know why I thought of that inside the thought about that game, but it makes you wonder which one.

This is pretty F'n gay.

This has the potential to destroy the uniqueness of the Wii. Sony and Microsoft wouldn't even have to develop their own controllers with this, MS could just buy them out and put it on the 360 following the potential of the Wii's success.

This is probably the worst news I have ever heard concerning the Wii.

Maybe it'll be nothing but its potentially catastrophic.

Nintendo Gaming / Launch Titles
« on: October 16, 2006, 01:58:39 PM »
Maybe I'm just oblivious (or something else  ) but as far as I know there still hasn't been a solid U.S launch lineup list! For the most part I already know what games I'm going to buy: Zelda, Red Steel, Madden and Excite Truck. But then I have other questions, Are one of the flight games going to be available for launch, (one of the reasons I've always hated flight games is the detached feeling from playing them racing games too, although the analog stick was an improvement over the d-pad in this sense, the Wii-mote will connect us better IMHO) I'd pick that up in a heartbeat, are we getting an adventure game beside raving rabbits? that game looks good, but I'd buy a different adventure game over it, I'm not much one for mini-games as I don't have too many people to play with (my friends (bless their hearts) are all sony fans although they've been getting more interested in the Wii the more i tell them about it and the less I use the name (like Metallica says, Sad But True)) anyway. where is the launch list? where is even the partial list? what games have been confirmed besides the ones I mentioned, and COD 3? I need to know we are only 34 days from launch (not including today) which means only 4  days until the countdown thread begins (don't cheat ) and I still don't know every game that's going to launch. I need to discuss every one of them!

What does this mean for us gamers?

Now the Wii, already acclaimed as being the easiest system to develop for this generation, just became even easier to delevop for!

One thing I can see is this leading to more games, less developer frustration, perhaps leading to an overall fresher experience, now of course these effects won't be seen for at least 6 months after launch (maybe longer, but that just means more time put into the game which isn't a bad thing).

This also means that Independent developers who's know how may not be as extensive as EA's or Ubisoft's (i believe they were the first two third-party devs to get their kits) will find it easier to bring their ideas to life giving us games that surpass the imagination of the stagnation of larger companies!

Hopefully the Wii will bring us games like the sundance festival (and others) bring us movies.

good old ninty mentioned in the past that the DS name of its system  could stand for developers system because of their love for it and it being easy to design games for. well the Wii has proven itself to be worthy of such a name as well check it out here

here you can read the article. Also the user comments are nice, some of the people seem to have genuinely never heard of the system before and have some good comments. others are obviously fanboys, and others yet are obvious haters. all in all a good read.

You can check it out Here...

O.K so now after seeing it did you also notice that it doesn't say Only for Wii?

The exclusivity of a game is always a big deal, becuase it means if you want to play this bad-ass game you must buy this system. Why isn't it present here?

The possibilities of this game not being exclusive to the Wii are zero to none, since as far as i can remember and i've been closely following this games development, it was developed ground up using only the Wii-mote, so porting it would be quite strange... no?

I don't know, i'm just wondering why it doesn't mentiong the fact that the game is exclusive to the Wii? Is it no longer necessary because of the Wii's uniqueness? Nintendo's balls have gotten so big, they're saying just the fact that it says Wii means it's exclusive because you can't play it this way on any other system?

That kind of makes sense to me... I wonder if that's what they are doing.

General Gaming / Why I'm going to buy a PS3 on launch day.
« on: September 16, 2006, 10:11:32 AM »
So I can sell it on Ebay for $2,000 - $3,000 and make $1,400 - $2,500 on it.

Thanks Sony!

If any of you have access to a friend who works at a game store and can make sure you actually get your PS3 on launch day I would recommend you do the same.

If the PS3 doesn't flop I'm going to own one because it not flopping means not all the games planned for it won't be made into Wii games with fewer polygon counts. And for some reason Sony gets floods and floods of RPG's which are my favorite.

At the same time, I'm not gonna pass up this opportunity. I did the same with XBOX360 except I went halves with someone, but on 3 systems. I made out with $1,700 after paying like ebay costs and all that other nonsense. I'm hoping to make at least that much on 1 PS3.
Then maybe I'll buy my mom her own Wii so she won't play with mine.

i might be used to the name but that still sounds awkward

Has there been an official launch list for the U.S?

Japan's list had 12 games Reggie (i think) said half of the 30 for the year (that's 15) would be available for launch.

Where's the list?

I want to know what to pre-order.

Besides a PS3 that is.

Is it just me or do these "real" Wii screenshot look extremely good? The lighting and shadowing is top-notch, the graphical detail is crisp.

O.K they're not PS3 graphics, but I mean come on they look damn good! I can't wait to see these games in progressive scan and widescreen in my room instead of just these mouth watering pictures!

I'm refering to the Battalian Wars II and Red Steel "real" pics mostly. I'd link for you but I'm lazy and you all know how to find them.

I was just wondering if anyone on these boards plays Asheron's Call. It is an MMORPG that I love and play as often as I can.

If you play any MMORPG's post it here, wouldn't it be interesting to meet someone in the game and the perhaps kill them?

Sounds like fun to me.

General Chat / HDTV

Hello, I kind of consider myself a geek. I love everything hi-tech and possess more knowledge on most electronics than your average joe(not you guys of course, its those "normal" people I'm refering to).

One area where I have not done as much research as I would like to is in HDTV's. Now I know a fair amount about them and how they work. The one grey area in all the research I've done, seems to be which technology offers the best viewings? LCD, DLP, CRT, or Plasma.

Now I know CRT's produce the best colors, especially black, that's a big thing in HD's I know, how good is the black. The TV i want to get, which i posted in another topic somewhere on this site is a plasma, after doing a ton of research on different models i settled on that one. Then I noticed that in all the other models I looked at none were DLP's or CRT's. The thing with CRT's is they don't go as large as the other formats, which is something I want. I want at least a 42" and I'm probably going to buy the 50" plasma I refered to earlier, if nothing dissuades me.

My question is, what are the main difference in the formats? I mean i've read what they're supposed to be, but is there anyone here who can tell me from viewing them what the differences are? Or anyone know a website that has done the research already and I can read their report?

I'm starting to lean towards DLP's but i've only just started researching DLP models, but they are rear projection, making them larger and heavier than others, but also cheaper from what I've seen so far, I'm also a little skeptical of projection T.V's because of the old days of videogames where a still screen could burn onto a projection screen. Something tells me they've since fixed this problem, but it's like how old people don't like to use microwaves and cell phones because there used to be reports that they caused cancer.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Praise
« on: August 04, 2006, 11:55:37 AM »
There's been talk even here about how the new system from Nintendo, officially named Wii, has some potential problems.

One of the main things, is people are complaining that games may require to much movement, and be tiring, or if you just want to plop down and play a game, you can't because it requires movement, and therefore you can't just sit back and relax.

I came home last night from a small gathering of friends, and in the state I was in, I was thinking about if I had a Wii. I was thinking about how great it would be playing all those cool games, and then I realized something: Because of the state I was in, I wouldn't really be in the mood to play say Madden 2007 where just about everything requires movement on my part. I would just want to play with a "normal" two handed controller and relax for a bit.

Then it hit me, not only is there the VC to satisfy this need, with the help of the classic controller, but Nintendo has already said they'll be developing new games that use the classic controller and not the Freehand (lol remember that name?) controller.

So the whole point of this is, Thank you Nintendo, for thinking of everything, and quite possibly making the closest thing to a perfect console, we have ever seen.

Nintendo Gaming / New Peripheral Announced by Ubisoft
« on: August 03, 2006, 12:30:35 PM »

IGN Wii: What can gamers expect from the racer GT Pro Series? The game seems to be exclusive to Wii. How does it use the remote to better the racing experience and what sort of features, cars and options can we expect in the finished product?

Laurent Detoc: GT Pro Series is inspired by a Japanese game that was never released here and Ubisoft is optimizing for the Wii. It will have more than 80 licensed cars, tons of tuning options and fluid drift-style controls and physics. Talk about how the Wii changes the way you play games, we're working to include an accessory in GT Pro Series that will make this game a must have. Stay tuned, literally.

I wonder what it is. Maybe some kind of wheel attachment? When I first saw the Wii-mote doing a racing game, i thought of using the mote like a shifter. (maybe that's cuz I love driving stick, and only miss automatics in traffic). Maybe they'll implement that somehow.

Oh yeah, the entire article is rather good if you'd like to take a look.

Beautiful no?

If only they offered it in other colors besides white. I still haven't bought my DS Lite because of procrastination and now that they've thrown in this little monkey wrench I may have to wait until Aug. 24. Or just get a black one? Or perhaps navy and save $20 for another game... Dang you Nintendo.

Nintendo Gaming / A Real Trauma Center
« on: August 01, 2006, 11:40:08 AM »
So I was watching T.V the other day, I forget which channel, and this surgeon was on T.V, and guess what he said? Playing video games all his life gave him the skills to be a surgeon!

This may seem really strange because how can playing video games translate to a scalpel (before the DS and Wii anyway)? It's because of a major advance in surgery, called, i can't remember what it's called, stereoscopic, or something of that nature, where someone has this camera on the end of a stick, sticks it into the patient and the surgeon uses tools on the end of stick to do what he's gotta do. Somehow playing video games, and not actually feeling what you're doing, plus the independent or somewhat unrelated two handed movement prepares people for this type of surgery.

What made me think of this today, since I saw this on T.V like 2 weeks ago, is the release of the new super monkey ball. Why you ask? Because that's what the good doctor was playing. Also I thought of it, and put it in this forum, because how much more will the Wii prepare people for this surgery? I mean in the game Trauma Center, it'd be really cool if they implemented this kind of surgery, because with dual motion sensing, it'd be like actually doing it. Which is the whole point isn't it? Realism... it doesn't come from graphics.

The Trauma Center game I was so looking forward slightly disappointed me when IGN reported (from famitsu) that the game is a remake not an all new game.

I guess we shouldv'e guessed from the name? New doctor, a few new characters and surgery, I'm still going to buy it.

So you don't subject yourself to the entire article here's the part I'm talking about:

Quote

It turns out that the PSP will "definitely" work as a remote control for the PS3. According to the speaker, it will have additional functionality and interactivity with Sony's next-generation PlayStation 3, but more details weren't revealed. Other info and bullet points (which isn't much for anyone who has been keeping up) included...

It's funny cuz I was actually looking to see if they had any new info on Sony's "original" (HA!) motion sensing controller, cuz I haven't heard a whisper about in a while, and was wondering if they wised up and canned the idea to spare the unnecessary development costs, and hatred for not putting in a rumble feature(funny how they steal one idea, and drop another one) anyway...

It's not just a rearview mirror anymore!

Nintendo Gaming / Wii calls you out!
« on: July 22, 2006, 09:56:51 AM »
So that interview with Miyamoto that IGN posted he states that Nintendo is developing a game in which four player play with one Wii-mote and passing it around. The controller will call out the name of the person who's turn it is.

I'm assuming that when he says name he doesn't mean "Player 1" but rather, "John" or "Mike" or even "Bubba". So this makes me believe that in Nintendo's effort to include everyone, will some sort of voice input be included in the Wii? It kind of goes against Nintendo's new strategy if the Wii can't say Chandradeo, that one person who's gets "Player 4" instead of their name called would be a little left out. It's been discussed in other threads about either using the speaker on the Wii-mote, or the DS' microphone for vocal input. Personally I'd prefer to use the DS microphone, which would only encourage more Wii/DS play and buying brings in the loot for Nintendo.

One other thought is that I'd find it oddly satisfying to hear the Wii say "*Name* is the King of Super Smash Brother" or "*Name* is the best player of the day" but especially "*Friends Name* just got his a$$ handed to him by *Name*". LoL i can't wait.

P.S. Nintendo kept the speaker in because 3rd parties wanted it, yet last I heard 3rd parties haven't had too much access to it? So they listened to 3rd parties, but then aren't too open with it. idk maybe they've just been refining it.

O.k so not all video games but THIS one does.

I thought this was one of the more incredible things I've read in awhile. This video games not only physically helps these kids by encouraging them to take their medicine, but helps psychologically and emotionally as well by making them feel better about themselves.
I hope Nintendo picks this game up, I'd play just for the fun of it.
